LOVED this place. I never had peruvian chicken before, but I will definitely be coming back here. We ordered a family deal with 2 chickens and sides + soda. The chicken itself was not dry, it was very good texture and flavor. The sauces that come with it were also all very tasty. (There was a spicy red, a mild green, and a yellow) The green and red were probably my favorite. First time having Yuca Fries, they went well with the sauce! The string beans and steamed veggies were lowkey also really good and went well with the chicken, rice, and black beans. There was also the shrimp ceviche which was definitely different than what I normally get went well, when I wrapped all the stuff in a lettuce leaf(not sure if that's what you're supposed to do). It had shrimp, some kind of sweet potato(which was good!), and Peruvian corn which was super cool. Then there was the Bistec a lo Pobre, which had Carne Asada, with fries and rice and other stuff. Also very good. Then the plantains which were all very good, definitely added a nice sweet addition to the meal. To top it all off, there was a cookie I was not sure the name of but it was good LOL. Canastas Chicken is located in the Walmart shopping plaza in Short Pump, and it has that type of feel- shopping center nondescript. I found that strange given that they serve Peruvian food, which is not your every day offering. Anyhoo, the ambiance is boring and uninspired. The menu is a mix of Peruvian (I guess?), Mexican, and Middle Eastern. Some of the unexpected menu items are ceviche, beef heart, and gizzards or chicken livers? I forget but something like that. They also have yucca and plantain. I wanted Peruvian so I went with their 1/4 chicken, green rice with black beans, and mixed vegetables. The mixed vegetables were from a can. (Yuck) The green rice was zesty and novel. The chicken was well seasoned and really juicy. Portion sizes were plentiful. You won't leave hungry. read more

Woke up from a nap around 7pm on Wednesday and was like omg what am I gonna eat for dinner?! Canastas fixed that! They closed at 8 and I got there around 7:15pm. The service was quick and smooth. I got a fresh 1/4 chicken (dark meat) with fried rice, green beans and and extra side of plantains. My order was to-go, but the inside was clean and have tv's and music for entertainment! My spouse is on a modified carnivore diet and it can be difficult to find places for him to eat when we are out. This is one of his favorite diet friendly places. We order the half chicken and split it. He orders a vegetable side and it's more than enough food for the both of us. The seasoning on the chicken is good. Being Cuban, I'm a little picky about certain foods. The plantains were not to my liking. Maduros should be sweeter, the plantains weren't allowed to ripen enough before cooking. My kids are always searching for new restaurants in the area. They told me about Canastas Chicken so I decided to try it for myself. I ordered the chicken cilantro with fried yuca and mixed vegetables. The chicken was tasty and the crispy fried yuca was good with ketchup. There was a good mix of roasted broccoli, carrots and squash. The food is prepared after you order so it too a while before they delivered the meal to my table. The restaurant is clean and fairly new in the area. The meal is plenty for two people. I had to box up 1/2 of it and bring it home for a later meal. When I walked into this very unpretentious place and heard almost everyone (customers and staff) speaking Spanish, I had every confidence that I was going to enjoy the food. I did an online order 20 minutes earlier but my order was not ready. In fact, the lady at the counter wasn't even aware it was placed. She went to check the computer and yep, it was there. She said it'll be ready in two minutes. It actually took another 10 minutes. I'm not sure why. I was the only person standing at the counter. I really want to give this place 3.5 stars because the portion and taste of the food was more than I ever expected. I got the Combo #1 which was half a chicken with three sides and two cans of soda for $17. This was definitely enough for two people. I'm so glad I have leftovers for another meal. I loved the sauces. I'm going to call them the green sauce and the yellow sauce. The green has a little bit of kick but not too hot. I actually liked dipping the fried yucca in that sauce. The yellow sauce was not spicy and was great on the chicken. I absolutely loved the green beans. I don't know how they prepared it but it tasted like it came from the grill. It was sauteed with onions and had such a wonderful flavor. I don't know why I was thinking canned green beans because these were not. I have a preference for my local rotisserie chicken place's fried yucca so I didn't think these were up to par. They lost one star because the take out containers were styrofoam. Unimposing little restaurant tucked away in an odd shopping center.  I have tried many locations of this local chain and they each have thier own personality. Nothing fancy -just delicious food at a great price. The service is excellent and the Peruvian flavors are definitely present. El pollo a la brasa (rotisserie chicken) is an excellent option along with many sides to choose from. I got the 1/2 rotisserie chicken with rice and house salad because im really addicted to it haha it comes out quick and it is always fresh. This was my first time here, It was pretty good. They weren't busy as far as getting a table but we stood at the counter for a little long without anyone acknowledging is as they were making other orders. I ordered 2 side orders, one was rice and beans and the other was plantains. They were $550 for large and $3.50 for small. They pack it tight in the container which is good because they are not cheap so getting large portions makes that easier to accept. I waited a good 15 mins for the food and went home to eat it, it was good, I liked everything. My daughter got chicken and rice and hers was good too. It was a great first experience but I do feel like almost $35 for one entree and 2 sides is alot. That's really my only complaint plaint. Food was good. Service was just okay. read more

Don't let the "Peruvian" dissuade you, this is REALLY GREAT FOOD! I promise you, if you like char-grilled chicken, you'll love this! I've visited Peru a couple of times. The food is not particularly exotic by any means, but there are cultural preparations and delicacies that are certainly common in most areas. Canastas Chicken brings many of these, and done up right! My go-to is the Anticucho de Pollo which are succulently marinated chicken thighs that are a skewered and placed on a char-grill for cooking. The smoky char from the grill with the marinade are a great marrying of flavors. Hit it was a side of Cilantro Rice and some Black Beans, and you've got an amazing dish. I typically lather my chicken in their green sauce (salsa verde) which has the 'right' amount of heat to bring the flavors to another level. Delish!! I've also tried the Anticucho de Corazon (beef heart) that is char-grilled and cooked to perfection. A common delicacy in Peru, and certainly executed well at Canastas. We've tried the Lamb Chops as well as the Cilantro Chicken -- both were tasty and amazing. Sides are plentiful, and with a good variety. Folks at the counter are happy to help make suggestions (if needed), and always friendly and appreciative of your visit. Be sure and get a bottle of Inca Cola while you're there. For those of you who haven't ever tried it, it's like a "Big Red" cola, but without the red coloring. Of course, there are some other familiar non-Peruvian non-indigenous items like: Quesadillas, Gyros, and other Tex-Mex like options. Great stuff!! read more

You walk up-to the line, place an order, and wait at a table in the dining room. Indoor seating is available, appropriate for casual, family, or groups. I've had Canastas Chicken from their East End location but today was my first time trying out the Glen Allen location. I ordered my takeout at the restaurant and received my food within 10-15 minutes. The staff were friendly and service was great - one of them gave me extra sauce without charging me! People were their wearing face masks properly and the tables looked clean. My go-to order is always their chicken with plantains as one of my side. For my second side, I tried out their cilantro rice for the first time today, which was a little bland by itself but definitely yummier when mixed with the cilantro green sauce. While I liked their chicken - well seasoned and relatively juicy - the green and yellow sauces give it the extra flavor boost!!! To me, the green one is cilantro/jalapeno based while the yellow one is mayo/sour cream based? They also make their empanadas on the spot/after you order. Although I had to wait an extra 5 minutes, it was worth the freshly fried empanadas that were crispy and filled with gooey cheese integrated with seasoned chicken/onions! This is my 4th time coming here and unfortunately my last. The price on the menu said that a "half chicken meal w/ two sides" was $14. I added a Pineapple Jarritos and expected the total to hover around $17. To my surprise the grand total was $37.95!!! One of the workers told me that the price had changed and that I can leave if I can't pay. I can't imagine that prices have more than doubled and also that there's no pricing update posted anywhere. It seems more likely that this was a case a laziness and poor customer service. I can't believe lunch here cost me $37.95. They even charged for the 2 sides that "came with the meal". Don't waste your time coming here unless you'd like to have a poor experience like I did. This place used to be a hidden gem, but now I wish it were just hidden. My first experience at Canastas was at their original location in the East End. I thought it was good, so when I saw a location was coming to the West End I was excited! Then quarantine became a thing and those little signs set covered on their doors. Finally, just a few weeks ago they opened! I'm a regular at another popular chicken place, but let me be the first to say Canastas has enough variety to make it stand out and be a favorite! 1)The chicken here is rather juicy/moist and they manage to leave the skin on, perfectly crisp to balance. I'm a sides fan at any spot-maybe a southern thang, but hey. If it were up to me, I want all the sides, and at once lol. But here with a meal you'll get two sides, and of course can add on more if really wanting to dabble. My non-negotiable must have here is the green rice! Try it! As for other sides, the plantains and yuca are also good, though I'll say the yuca tends to be on the harder side. Lastly, the sauces here are delish-both the yellow and green. Normally I'm not a fan of green sauce as it's too spicy at some places, but here both sauces seem to have a suttle kick of flavor and heat without being overpowering or needing water nearby. OK, so I went to Canastas Chicken in Short Pump. I ate there. I have had better Peruvian chicken at another restaurant not so far away from this one BUT I will say that the food itself was good. I did not have to wait extensively long for it to be ready either. In that regard, my exceptions were met...however, let me begin by talking about my entrance into the restaurant where the employee that I spoke with directed me (from the kitchen) to make a selection from the menu and to take a number and have a seat in the dining area where it would be brought to me. There were approximately 4-5 employees (that I saw) working at the time (early evening on a Friday). They were all younger people. None of them were wearing gloves as they prepared meals and went back and forth between preparing the food, working the cash register, and serving the patrons in the dining area. Having been in a restaurant recently, I thought this was noticeably odd. Also, there does not seem to be a sink in the kitchen area (which is open to the dining area), where one could say, wash their hands even if they wanted to do this. Is it an interior design flaw to have an open style kitchen/serving area where your patrons can see you prepare your food in a highly unsanitary fashion so soon after a pandemic? Maybe? Maybe not? I'm not sure the employees care that much TBH. Anyway, the lights are really bright in there and the booth where I sat had the largest table. Seriously, the table size to booth size ratio was straight up bonkers. (It was like one of those tables in a high school chemistry class where you would dissect a frog with your group of four classmates.) At the end of the meal I used the men's room. It was not very clean. Let me just say that and you can use your imagination. Also, I noticed that the paper towel dispenser was placed almost directly on top of the sign that says "Employees Must Wash Hands Before Returning To Work" so the sign actually only read "Employees Must". We were the only ones in the restaurant when we ordered. Food took 15-20 minutes. One item was a quesadilla, which took the longest. No ice in their ice machine. They said they were out at 11:30 am. Main employee continued to eat from the ready to serve food with no gloves and kept removing his face mask. Pretty good food for the most part, nothing incredible. Service is not the sweetest and can be a little snappy. The vibe is fine, it isn't trying to be fancy which is good with me. My issue with this place is how consistently I've found dangerously thin chicken bones that could easily be swallowed and are very very sharp and could definitely tear your insides up. I mean really dangerous stuff. I won't ever eat here again due to the risk. I've found these little bones in what is supposed to be boneless chicken 3 times in a row. As a Peruvian, I am glad to have some Peruvian food locally. I get a quarter of chicken almost at least once a week. The fried rice is delicious along with the yellow and green sauces. I've tried some of the traditonal Peruvian dishes such as the lomo saltado with the Huancaina noodles which was good but honestly not as good as their chicken. I'm so glad that they've expanded to 3 locations now. read more

So so good! One day, a coworker suggested we have lunch delivered from Canastas. I was skeptical. I had never had Peruvian chicken nor did I even know what it was. She suggested I try the Pollo Ever. Which I did and I immediately fell in love. Since, I have ordered takeout on three more occasions and have been beyond pleased each time. I want to try other menu options but the Pollo Ever seems to always call my name. The chicken is perfectly grilled, full of flavor, juicy and the portions are large. I lived in Arequipa Peru for 2 years so trust me when I say that I am very familiar with Peruvian cuisine. I got the classic Lomo Saltado and it couldn't have been better. The meal is as close that you're gonna get to authentic Peruvian cuisine. Even the rice was as close as you got to authenticity without being in Peru and let me tell you; rice is a big deal in Peru. A ton of food as well; you'll have trouble finishing it for sure. The steak was seasoned extremely well for the dish. Just make sure that you either have a coke or an Inca cola with it. read more

Been here a couple times the chicken is pretty good but I would avoid the beef soup( sopa de res) the guy recommended it telling me it's buenisima but if that's what you consider buenisima then I would just not sell soup at all lacked flavor tasted old and just had a greasy after taste I've had better soup elsewhere and I can definitely make a better soup for sure all in all just avoid the soup read more

I tried Canastas for the first time yesterday and i am a fan!! The Peruvian Chicken Market in Short Pump was definitely lacking. Not anymore! I placed a to go order over the phone and that process went quick and easy. I ordered a 1/4 chicken combo with green rice and yucca. The restaurant was very nice from what i can see while i was in there. It was a very quick in and out there so did not get any pictures of the place. Now onto the good part the food lol. The chicken had a very flavorful skin and the chicken was very juicy. I have had other Peruvian chicken places chicken and this is up there with them. There green rice is flat out amazing! i believe it's celantro lime,whatever it is i highly recoomend getting it! There is a great balance of flavors with it. The Yucca was very good. Also you get alot of it compared to some other places i have gone. Overall i highly recommend giving Cananastas a try for you Chicken Fix in the SHort Pump area!!! read more
