I was solo manning a table, and couldn't find the time to venture out to the food trucks outside. She rolls up in the perfect marriage of cycle and food cart, and it's purple...so I love it. Hungry daq goers flock to her...I fear she'll run out of tamales, but she keeps serving them up. I look about and find my chance to run over and check out what she's cookin' with. She had 4 flavors on the menu. I know that three of them were sweet tamales, with the fourth being Pork Tamales. At this point, I had tunnel vision, so the only sweet one I can recall the name of is Blueberry. I bought 2 of the pork for $5, which at the corner of hunger and convenience, I find to be very reasonable. She plates them, fork and napkins me, and sends me on your merry way. I unwrap these puppies slowly, still steaming from the pots they had been contained in. While I prefer a nice cold, crunchy or limey dish this time of year; these tamales hit the spot. Equal parts masa and pulled pork; it had a heat but not too spicy. I could've asked to borrow the hot sauce in her cart but I was good and already downing copious amounts of water. The masa came off the tamale wrapping easily and seemed to me to be perfectly cooked. I say rainbow brite because if Rainbow Brite decided to move to the Marigny, turn in the blonde locks for every color under the sun to grace her locks, rock heart shaped sunglasses and funky rain boots...well her street name would be Holly. Let's just say, you might want her to autograph your corn husk, she just looks that cool. I hope to see Holly again, and venture out to try a sweet tamale!

Longer: So I was a little hesitant to go to CDM, because it's such the tourist stop and the first joint anyone mentions when they say "beignet". But this was our first stop, morning of first day. The beignets are piled in sugar, they are warm, crunchy and crisp on the outside and soft, warm and delicate inside. I gotta tell you, the texture is just a little different than Cafe Beignet, the Four Seasons, and even the other CDM in the park we tried a few days later. To me, this is the best one. Now, as a coffee person, their black coffee is strong, rich, and a good compliment to the real show - the beignets. But I did not pick up on nearly as much chicory in their chicory coffee as, say, Cafe Beignet's version. Also, I have to let you know the other location in the big park serves a non-chicory version (in addition to NOLA chicory) that is head and shoulders the best coffee we had in New Orleans. But this is the joint. As a bonus, it's colorful, has consistently great street musicians, and has lots of walkable sites as you struggle to waddle around after too many beignets. Gotta go!

It feels all the way "working CBD lunch" yet unhurried, a reflection of Cochon's greatness but scaled down and with utterly no pretense.
