He had already been returned twice before coming into rescue, and the thought of putting him up for adoption and having him experience another return honestly terrified me. Doug was an anxious puppy who lacked confidence, struggled with severe separation anxiety, and was incredibly leash reactive. And when I say reactive, I mean he would lunge up and down like a tiger and was nearly impossible to calm down. As his foster, I became very attached to him. I wanted him to find his forever home, but I was so nervous about adopting him out and having him returned again. He deserved stability, and I couldn't bear the thought of him going through another failed placement. That's when we decided Doug needed more support, and he spent 4 weeks at Northstar Family K9 for their board-and-train program. I'll be completely honest sending him away was HARD. But the team at Northstar made the entire experience so much easier. Milo, Julia, Emma, and Hank made it feel like Doug was at a second home. The daily report cards and videos were amazing. I never felt completely disconnected from him. I could see his progress, know how he was doing, and feel like I was still a part of his journey even while he was away. We also got to go in for training sessions, which I absolutely loved because they weren't just training Doug they were teaching us how to continue working with him when he came home. And the transformation has been incredible. Doug is a completely different dog. He has confidence. He's calmer. He has tools to work through situations that previously overwhelmed him. And most importantly, I now feel confident sending him to his forever home. As a foster, that is everything to me. I don't want to just find a dog a home. I want to feel confident that the home is going to be their forever home especially for a dog who has already experienced the heartbreak of being returned twice. Thanks to Northstar, Doug is now getting adopted, and for the first time, I can let him go to his forever family without that same fear in the back of my mind that he'll be returned again. Northstar didn't just train Doug. They gave him confidence, gave him tools, and gave me confidence in his future. I truly cannot recommend Northstar Family K9 enough. The homework and techniques have been helpful in teaching my dog some foundational work. I believe TCOTC is also a popular location for brining dogs who want to learn agility. I do think the trainers get paid for the classes they lead, but it almost seems like they are all volunteers and there for the love of helping other dogs. I do feel the classes are helpful, but I also think there is some heavy overlap between classes - even though you are told to take some of them in a specific order.

I really appreciate that this is a family-owned small business and not a large chain like a number of the other local doggy daycare/boarding facilities. They get to know all of the pups super well. They are really "blossomed" the past year and a half in terms of offering tons of fun theme days where you can get photos of your dog dressed up and participating in activities (bunny ear photos and Easter egg hunt for Easter!) They also post fun updates to social media and have tons of cameras so you can check in on your pup throughout the day if you choose. They have helped me out soooo many times including when I have been running late for the pick-up or reaching out for a late reservation or an add-on service. The ability to be able to have Nora get groomed, nails clipped, and her anal glands expressed all during a regular day at daycare is amazing and so convenient. When we moved just over a year ago, we literally made sure to keep in mind the distance between us and Wag 'n Woofs because bringing her elsewhere was not an option. It's fun to see all the pups play throughout the day. The camera is also how I know my dog likes some workers more than others and when he is (or is not) having a good time. Our daycare experience was great, minus some turf burns on his paws but our boarding experience was less than ideal. When we came back to pick him up, there was this "hot spot" under his chin/neck area. When I brought it up with the staff at pickup, they weren't even aware of it. The lack of attention to detail on my pup is concerning as you could tell it had been festering for a few days. I hate that I am now left with this uncertain and uneasy feeling about his care there. Major dog mom guilt :(

I have a high-energy, extroverted puppy that needs a midday power walk while my other dog is a shy senior who prefers short strolls. Somehow, Emma's figured out how to cater to both of their needs...simultaneously. My dogs adore Emma and look forward to seeing her every Tuesday and Thursday. Emma's also been a positive influence on my dogs -- they no longer bark/carry on when she arrives and are better walkers all around. I appreciate that Emma is so good with them, captures sweet photos on walks and (when necessary) goes through the hassle of getting them in/out of their winter gear.
