We absolutely love this gem of a restaurant and bar! Such a cozy and good atmosphere and a fun vibe for the summertime! We went last night, on a Thursday, for their Thursday fish taco and margarita special! Tacos are $3 per taco and margs were $3 as well. It was all so delicious as always, and as always I had to get a cup of their lobster bisque! Also (not pictured) my husband got the carne asada tacos and said they were really good. We went there Saturday evening and were a bit underwhelmed. We went there a couple of years ago and I remember the food being better. This time around, I started with a lobster bisque. That was actually very good! I then had the mahi-mahi. It was bland with a bacon guacamole on top of it. I thought the guac was unnecessary and felt like the fish could have been a hit if it was blackened. The broccoli was really yummy. The rice..not much flavor. My husband ordered wings and tempura ranch to go. He said the wings were average and both agreed the tempura could have had some more flavor. We will go back and try another night. I came here with my parents on the way back from a family weekend in KC. Overall, I really enjoyed our meal on the outdoor patio. The three of us shared an appetizer of sweet potato fries which were perfectly flavored, but a little oiled. I ordered the fish tacos, which were great! The tacos were very full and had great seasoning. Between the tacos and sweet potato fries I was full. Really the only reason I just couldn't give this restaurant 5 stars is because of smoking. There were several people who were table hopping around the patio just trying to avoid the smoke. My allergies and my mother's asthma are really aggravated by cigarette smoking. First off, this place has GOOD fish tacos! However, I give them a 3-star rating for several reasons. Read further! I heard from a co-worker I needed to check this place out just for their fish tacos. And man she was right. They had great flavors and basically topped with a whole salad. I'm sightly allegoric to raw vegetables and fruits so I had to remove most of it, but I bet someone else would enjoy it. My only complaint, I wish the fish was more of chunks of fresh fish instead of the very thin grilled fish. Was a bit on the too crispy side. Now why they got a 3-star rating. The fish tacos were like a 31/2 or 4-star rating but the rest of the food and drinks receive 2-stars. Crab Cakes I cannot recommend. The texture was terrible. It was more like a mushy salmon croquettes. Hard to eat due to texture and flavor plus pricey. Second reason... beer menu sucks! In fact, our waiter told me they don't have any draft beers. If you are looking for a relaxed, unpretentious, place with above average service and food for affordable prices, then the Canoe Club is your kind of place. Located on Colbern Road near the lake it is what you should expect and get. There is no question that it is the place where the "locals" go (time and again) to relax and enjoy a pleasant meal. There is a "deck" outside (where, oh my gosh, smoking is allowed), and the "inside" is pure lake! I guess you could wear your 3 piece perfectly tailored Brooks Brothers and wingtips there, but you would notice that shorts and sandals are perfectly acceptable. Yes, relax and enjoy! I cannot say enough about the friendly and efficient service. Wait staff remembered us after the second time we were there, and they remembered us in a good way! They do not "hover" over your table, but are always there when the time is right. I like that. The place is clean and well maintained. Parking is in a private lot where I sometimes forget to lock my car. Nice. The menu is perfect for the location and market. Early small plates include calamari (that is never rubbery or over cooked), and a artichoke dip that is amazing (make sure to get the pita rather than chips, it is served hot and really make the dish). Of note should be their specials: Wed is steak night, with a filet that makes you think of Pierpont's, and Thursday is fish taco's (get them blackened) and Margarita's. Heck, even my vegan son can find a meal that suits him. Try 'em, you will not be disappointed! There is live entertainment on weekend evenings.
