Outstanding service in the bartenders are incredibly responsive Great drink specials on happy hour that are $10 instead of the normal 17. Wings or meaty with a nice sauce Sliders are outstanding and I recommend medium rare you know sometimes sliders can be overcooked. And of course, the fresh sourdough bread you can't go without I'm surprising the places like this even still give bread although you have to ask for it I'll be honest is definitely upscale clientele Just tried the peach seasonal cocktail. Very interesting combination.

We went here for my birthday and it was delightful. They thoughtfully left a card on the table and gave a free dessert. Three of us had their delectable crab bisque and one a wedge salad. The steaks are so very good! I could eat that every day. Service was really wonderful- friendly people who actually seemed happy to be a part of the celebration. [I'm not kidding myself, they're paid to be like that, but it's still nice.] it was a lovely evening in a quiet restaurant, spent with family. It's one of my folk's favorite places and I can certainly see why. Even the small things are great- the whipped potatoes exceeded expectations. I got the prix fixe menu and my very favorite dessert, a wonderful crème brûlée. However, we also got a delicious, beautiful slice of chocolate cake. Everything combined made for just a lovely dinner.

Again I stress my review if strictly Prime Rib related. Everything else was fantastic.

Kansas City restaurants are awesome. This steakhouse is beautiful inside, dark and romantic. Our server Daniel was top notch! The food was excellent, steak done to perfection, Daniel's suggestion for seafood was the mixed grill, absolutely amazing. Oh, most importantly this was on a Saturday evening...food and service still perfect.

We eat here quite a lot and love the decor and menu. Delicious options for date night and dinner with friends. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. A great option for dinner always.

Desserts definitely big enough to share. This is the cheesecake w/ blueberry sauce. Chocolate Velvet Cake is also spectacular.

I learned on our most recent visit, which was on a Friday, that on most Fridays & Saturdays when they get extra busy, they open up 2 other dining rooms. They are brighter than the main dining areas, but they also lack the warmth and comfort of them too unfortunately. It kinda felt like we were in their second tier area. The food was still wonderful and our server Mei Lei was fabulous, but I wish I'd been told about where we were being seated when I made the reservation. In the future, I will request not to sit there. It's not even laid out well- I was bumped into 3 times by staff members getting water pitchers.

My fiancé and I love to get the French Onion soup and the tasting menu and share it. The crème brûlée is my favorite. Staff is also great and food is delicious.

I love this place! My wife and I used to come here every couple months when we are in KC. Lately, it has fallen out of rotation for some reason. I am glad to come back and try it again. The restaurant is dark and quiet inside. Good for date night or a romantic dinner. There is a fireplace that is super cozy and a nice bar. I would make a reservation. I have seen this place very full. On Monday you might be able to sneak in without one though. The service has always been good. Just this last time our waiter was great! He was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. For instance, my wife doesn't like rosemary and he was able to steer her around side dishes and entrees and recommend alternatives. No going back and forth to the kitchen to ask what's in the food. It's nice when the wait staff know what they are serving. I typically get the KC strip off the prix fixe menu and it's always been cooked to the right temp and the taste is great. I like the wood fired grill they use and it imparts a nice smoky flavor on the food. My wife likes the salmon for the same reasons. The cocktails are pretty good here too. I would get the smoked old fashioned or the beast of bourbon, both standouts for me. If you don't like bourbon I've gotten dirty martinis here and they were really good as well. You might try an espresso martini if that is more your style. The side dishes we have tried have been very tasty, but to be honest there's so much food to eat I usually take them home and eat them the next day. Gotta make choices to get to the dessert! If you get dessert, get the chocolate cake with raspberry ice cream. It's so good. I usually try to leave room for it. Overall, this place is very good. It's on the more expensive side but if that doesn't bother you then try it out.

We went to J. Gilbert's for a special occasion - my mom's birthday. The food was, as always, excellent, and the ambiance is warm and inviting. It's one of those places that feels perfect for a celebration. That said, the service experience was disappointing tonight. We waited over an hour and ten minutes for our entrees, which really took away from the evening. Working in the restaurant industry myself, I understand that average ticket times are around 20 minutes, so this felt excessive - especially for a special occasion. What made it more frustrating was the lack of communication. Our server wasn't checking in, the table wasn't being cleared, and no one offered additional bread or updates about our food. I even had to ask about our appetizer to make sure it was coming. Overall, the food and atmosphere were great as usual, but the pacing and attentiveness of service really missed the mark tonight. I'd love to see the kitchen and service team tighten up timing and communication - it would make the experience worthy of the quality the restaurant is known for. Unfortunately, I am writing this review because this isn't the first time this happened, but the second time IN A ROW. Even worse, the previous time we were here, we also went for a special occasion.

We came here for restaurant week and were very pleased! My boyfriend got the restaurant week menu which was a soup or salad, entree, and dessert. He got the blue cheese wedge salad, 12oz KC Strip, and horchata bread pudding. All of the items were good but the horchata bread pudding was great! MeiLi, our server, even gave us an extra to take home because we liked it so much. She was fantastic and attentive the whole meal. I got the wood fire ribs and they were very good. A whole slab with fries and cream corn. Great overall meal and experience. We will definitely be back!

Was packed for restaurant week, so a little hard to hear across the table. However still a great spot for a birthday dinner, included a delicious complementary desert. Our server was great, very attentive and knowledgeable. Everyone enjoyed their meals, steak seasoning leaned smokey and peppery, side mac and cheese was a crowd favorite!

It definitely gives "I was formally a sports bar that was hap hazardly put together to try to pass off as an upscale restaurant." It feels cold and unwelcoming in a way. The music over head was barely audible adding to the sterile feel of the space. So bottom line for me, I liked the food well enough, but with the ambiance and service lacking, I won't return.

Several dishes were overly salted, and the Caesar salad was especially sad--wilted lettuce and lacking freshness. The restaurant was very crowded, but not adequately staffed to handle the volume. Service was slow throughout the night, and they ran out of items on the Restaurant Week menu. I was served melted sorbet and had to send it back. Our dinner took nearly three hours, largely due to long stretches of waiting to be served or checked on. Busy nights are understandable, but the lack of pacing and execution really took away from what could have been a much better experience. They had a jazz band playing which was a nice experience. If you go, ask for a table on the right. We were on the left side and about frozen every time the front doors opened, which was a lot while the band was bringing in their equipment.

We were seated on time at a table next to the bar-side of the dining room. Speaking of the dining room, it's a nice, if standard size for a strip-mall space, but I really appreciated that the tables were not stacked on top of each other, as seems to be the case at more and more places these days. It felt like there might be some chance of our entire conversation not being completely overheard by our neighbors, which was nice for a change! Our waitress was fantastic! She walked us through the menu, the restaurant's approach to cooking and seasonality, some of her faves, and made wonderful recommendations! We decided to split a few small plates, which was a great approach! We got to try about 1/3 of the small plate menu, and loved it all! It was all great, but the Black Cardamom Burnt Ends are NOT to be missed! It made my cardamom-loving, Midwest soul very, very happy indeed! The space is a really nice size - not massive or overwhelming - and with the shades drawn down (to seal out the late afternoon sun, thank goodness!) and dim lighting, the mood vibes were solid for a romantic anniversary dinner! The other ambiance item of note is that the restroom corridor smelled absolutely fantastic! Upon investigation, it was due to a burning candle from a lovely local-KC company that was custom made for the restaurant! Yes, they're for sale, and yes, we picked up two! While everything was lovely and the food was very good, you're definitely paying a high price for it. Not that it's not deserved, but the "value" feels aren't necessarily "off the charts", by any means. And that is really my only critique, if there is any at all! Decent option for dinner…read more I stopped by earlier this week on my first night in town, and sat at the end of the bar. The bartender served me a Guinness (on tap, of course!) and then recommended the Monday Steak Night special ($60) - a prix fixe option which included a salad plus one of four types of steak, sides, and dessert. I opted for the house salad (with sherry vinaigrette dressing), the hangar steak (he was selling it hard!), sautéed green beans, and lemon meringue pie. The house salad was superb, with delicious chunks of goat cheese! I also enjoyed the sautéed green beans, loaded with sliced almonds and fresh garlic. The hangar steak was probably the most disappointing, and solely responsible for this review not earning 5 stars. I took half of it to go along with half of the green beans. The lemon meringue pie looked delicious but I could not eat another bite, so that also went into a to-go container. Back in my hotel room that night, working late as I was jet lagged, I ate that pie. OMG! PURE HEAVEN!! And the main reason this review earned 4 stars! Will be back for the salad and green beans and pie! And some Guinness on tap, of course!!

The space was nice and clean, but unfortunately, the service and the "famous" main course didn't quite deliver a stellar performance. Our table was split--some wanted dinner, some wanted dessert. This apparently threw our waiter into a state of deep existential confusion. The Food: I ordered their "famous" fried chicken, customizing it to three thighs (which came with homemade pickles and a fantastic ham gravy). For $24, it wasn't bad, but it's definitely not "famous" for flavor--maybe just famous for the price tag. Honestly, I could have filled up at Popeyes for a fraction of the cost. Surprisingly, the absolute star of my meal was the side of sautéed mushrooms. It came with little pearl onions, shallots, and green peas. I topped it with some of my friend's arugula to make it fancy, and it was delicious. The Service (or lack thereof): Here's where it went downhill. The dessert order became a saga. Those who ordered sweets expected them to arrive with the mains, but we had to ask several times just to get them toward the end of the meal. By the end, our waiter seemed completely frustrated with our existence. He aggressively boxed up the remaining desserts and semi-forcefully shoved the credit card machine into our faces to shuffle us out the door. Great mushrooms, aggressive math at the end. Proceed with caution.

I had reservation reservations for us at 6 PM. We were seated promptly and had a server who was very kind and pretty good considering it was his second night working here. We each ordered a cocktail, which were very good. And we each had prime rib. The meat itself was pretty stringy and hard to cut with the dull knives that we were given. Mine was undercooked. I ordered mashed potatoes with brown Gravy, which were just okay. My wife enjoyed her baked potato a great deal though. Our server brought out our food when we weren't even halfway through our salads. He apologized because he knew he was early, but by the time we got to our entrées, they were cold. A great, or even good steakhouse would never do that. The food quality was average or below, and the service was about the same. If you're looking for mediocrity, you can find it here. By the entrance, they have a list of 10 great steakhouses in the US. I have been to a few of them, including Peter Luger's, and Jess and Jim's really has no place on this list. I literally laughed out loud as we passed by the sign on the way out.

Went there for dinner last night to celebrate a birthday…read more We had the shrimp scampi and the pork chop. Both main courses were excellent. The scampi had a generous portion of good size shrimp. The pork chop was very thick and large yet was very flavorful and tender. The pork chop came with mashed potatoes and seasoned vegetables. However, in looking over the menu I saw they had a variety of sides. I asked if I could change me sides, which they were more than glad to do. I got the carrots and the cornbread. The carrots were delicious and there was a lot of them. The cornbread tasted good but was a little dry. Next time I would stay with the carrots but try something else. As I said the pork chop was very big and I took about half of it home. When I placed my order the waiter asked if I wanted to order a second pork chop, which I passed on. However, next time I may take him up on the offer and have an additional one to take home. All around I give it 5 stars. Also, we asked about desert. There was no desert menu nor a desert tray to help us make a decision. The waiter did rattle off the desert options, however this was kind of busy to follow. A desert menu or try would certainly go a lot further, as far as we are concerned. In summary, the food was outstanding, the service was very good and the atmosphere was pleasant.

I wasn't sure what to expect as I tend to be a bit weary of chain restaurants. I have to say though, this one had a really nice vibe and I get why people like it here. First of all, it's a nice restaurant with elevated vibes. It reminded me of places I used to go with my grandparents as a kid. It had great service, comfortable seating, and a nice menu. If anything it just feels like it caters to an older crowd - nothing wrong with that, just not my usual vibe. For brunch that day I had the migas and it was really great. Tons of food, and I easily made two meals out of my lunch. Something to note about the menus though is that they don't have a kids menu. They did share items for kids that they have on hand, but no physical menu to look at so not sure the prices or anything. Our daughter had a hamburger and she loved it so that was a win. One plus was she was able to get a side of fruit instead of fries, which was a win for her since she has declared that she only likes McDonald's french fries these days. Overall this is a nice sit restaurant with table service that has an elevated and sophisticated vibe. Likely geared towards older generations but younger folks will find plenty to enjoy here as well.

I ordered the Kansas City strip with shrimp both times, and everything was excellent. The steak was cooked perfectly, and the shrimp were honestly amazing. which says a lot because I'm very picky about seafood. Fresh, flavorful, and not overcooked at all. Service was great both nights, everyone was friendly, and I had zero complaints. It was consistently good, which is exactly what you want when you're traveling for work and just want a solid meal. If I'm back in Overland Park, I'll absolutely be coming here again.
