I have been going here for a year and the staff is just outstanding. The menu regularly updates for seasonality with new things like peach and watermelon cocktails, but the standard stuff is consistently incredible. The staff -- Dave, Kristen, and Jeremy -- are outstanding. The manager Zehra is always attentive and truly asks for feedback. The place is upscale but not pretentious. Just a lovely atmosphere. Went to JG for dinner a month ago and forgot to submit this review. Overall a thumbs up to JG. I felt it was definitely better than the last time I ate there (about a year ago). This time we got 3 seafood meals. Yeah, no steaks this time. The food was above average as the two scallop dinners were excellent. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the overall dish was well conceived. The shrimp dish was also very good but the shrimp were overcooked, thus a bit rubbery. We kicked off the evening with the Smoked Old Fashioned, which set the bar ridiculously high right out of the gate. It arrived at the table in a carafe trapping a cloud of rich smoke that infused the drink through your second pour, paired with a neat, custom-stamped ice cube. To start our meal, we shared a giant Wedge Salad that was practically a meal in itself--loaded with creamy ranch dressing, fresh tomatoes, crispy bacon, onions, and boiled egg. When it came to the entrees, both dishes hit a home run: The Miso Glazed Sea Bass was cooked to absolute perfection--flaky, delicate, and packed with flavor. It was paired with sticky rice and broccolini that was surprisingly good and held its own against the main event. Across the table, the Top Sirloin was prepared flawlessly, cooked perfectly to temperature and accompanied by crisp-tender asparagus and smooth, delightfully whipped potatoes. Even after a satisfying meal, we couldn't resist dessert. The Chocolate Mousse was the ultimate grand finale--rich and velvety without being overly sweet, closing out an incredible night on the perfect note. J. A disappointment. We came here because we were recommended it by a friend who said it was one of the best steaks. The steaks we had were good. Everything else was mediocre. The service was slow; our server, Michael, never filled our waters, cared more about the alcohol sales, and our wait for everything was long. All the sides were simple, and the Mac and cheese felt like it was baking under a heat lamp for hours. The French onion dip was forgotten about and we had to remind the server about it, thus coming out way late. One highlight was the Cesar salad. That was delicious. Would not recommend for the price, because if you're paying $60+ for a steak, you can find someplace better. read more

This was my first time trying J. Gilbert's and I was extremely impressed. Everything we had was delicious. The calamari was cooked perfectly crispy and the two dipping sauces it came with were different but paired excellently with the calamari. The steak was good but I especially loved the au gratin and the creamed corn with bacon as my sides. Our waitress was helpful and attentive. My only complain is how loud it was. All of the booths are super close together and packed in and the restaurant was full on a Tuesday night. So that combo just made it extremely noisy to the point where you basically had to yell to the person across from you. Not really the restaurants fault though. Surprised my husband for his birthday dinner at J Gilbert's and it's now in our "great date places" list. It's dimly lit - which sets the mood for a romantic evening. Although they have an extensive wine and drink menu, we opted for a dry evening. He started with 3 oysters which were medium sized and served with a unique onion Champaign accompaniment. For our entrees, he selected the seafood mixed grill which allowed sampling multiple seafood options. The fire-kiss on the shrimp and asparagus was amazing. The crap cake was almost entirely crab, which was divine. I selected the sockeye salmon special (actually ordered the last one they had!) with green beans and whipped potatoes. The salmon was incredible served with a lemon butter. (The sockeye was more flavorful than the non-sockeye served with the seafood mix grill). Loved the green beans with roasted pecans! Because it was his birthday, he was given a free desert and selected the crème brûlée. It was perfect - exactly as expected with a classic crème brûlée. I'd read and seen pictures of the 24 layer chocolate cake and had to get one to go (we were way too full!). Obviously, it's a huge slice (no joke, probably weighed nearly 2 pounds) and can easily serve 4. It is so moist and rich! It's a must try! read more

This was our "special" family meal with three generations in town and it disappointed. Kudos for a very friendly server but the service itself was uneven and slow. When he was at the table he was super enthusiastic but we had long stretches of inattention -- and I am bothered by clearing plates while others are still eating as I think makes them feel rushed. The food itself was lackluster. Most of us felt the steaks were dry and nothing special. We did appreciate the willingness to split plates and make that easy. On ambience, multiple people in our group commented that it was both too dark and too loud to really enjoy the company. The restroom also seemed to be poorly attended. I used it early in the evening and noticed a glass had been left at the sinks and it was still there when I returned at the end of the meal, suggesting that no staff had visited the restroom in all that time. Another diner flagged that one toilet was out of service. I'll keep going for the occasional happy hour but won't be back for a meal. read more

As we make our rounds at all the top steak restaurants in the KC area, this one finally on our list. This one is worth a trip. To start off. Great dark steak house environment. Dark Leather and wood. The rich atmosphere and smell of cooking meat. Fresh bread to the table. Wedge salad was excellent. Then I get the KC strip which was cooked perfectly. It didn't taste aged for very long if at all. There's no advertisement about that and usually steak joints rave about their aging. This is a key factor in why a steak is premium and fetches a premium price. Aging makes a massive difference. I was pleased that I got some sides with my steak. I had mashed potatoes and asparagus. Creme Brulée for dessert. Everything was excellent. Service was top notch as you would expect. read more

Service is some of the best I've seen in KC and the menu items are "to die for." Every time I go, I tell myself I'm going to try something new off the menu, but then the Seafood Mixed Grill calls me again. It's incredible and I get it every time. We went here for my birthday and it was delightful. They thoughtfully left a card on the table and gave a free dessert. Three of us had their delectable crab bisque and one a wedge salad. The steaks are so very good! I could eat that every day. Service was really wonderful- friendly people who actually seemed happy to be a part of the celebration. [I'm not kidding myself, they're paid to be like that, but it's still nice.] it was a lovely evening in a quiet restaurant, spent with family. It's one of my folk's favorite places and I can certainly see why. Even the small things are great- the whipped potatoes exceeded expectations. I have to say I was made to feel very uncomfortable at the restaurant simply because I asked to be seated at another table in a location that provided more light. This was before we even sat down. Our waitress stated that she needed to seek permission to relocate us, which was granted Just moments later, we were escorted to a lovely table and sat down, but yet another staff person approached and told us to move to another table or we would only have that table for 1 1/2 hrs. I looked around the room and still saw the many empty tables and couldn't believe we were being treated in such a disrespectful way. I was speechless. I couldn't believe the treatment we were getting. We stayed in our seats and then another staff person approached, told us they resolved the problem and told us we could stay at that table. I still don't know what the problem actually was! Visiting KC from Phoenix. My party of six was psyched to dine here. I read great reviews and saw this was supposed to be one of the best steakhouses in the area. Boy, were we disappointed. We dine out often at all kinds of restaurants. We don't often go to a nice steakhouse, but I have been to many of the big-name places. The restaurant was so loud, I could barely hear the people at my table. The server was quite nice and very accommodating, but his service was spotty. The crab bisque was an excellent start, but the first bowl was not hot, so we sent it back. We also got calamari, which several people raved about in their reviews. It was nothing to write home about. The prime rib, a weekend special, was overcooked and dry. I have had better at lesser establishments. My grandsons KC strip steak was also dry. The tenderloin was just OK. Our dessert choice was the star of the night, 24-layer chocolate cake, but it couldn't redeem the rest of the meal. We will not be back. read more

I learned on our most recent visit, which was on a Friday, that on most Fridays & Saturdays when they get extra busy, they open up 2 other dining rooms. They are brighter than the main dining areas, but they also lack the warmth and comfort of them too unfortunately. It kinda felt like we were in their second tier area. The food was still wonderful and our server Mei Lei was fabulous, but I wish I'd been told about where we were being seated when I made the reservation. I love this place! My wife and I used to come here every couple months when we are in KC. Lately, it has fallen out of rotation for some reason. I am glad to come back and try it again. The restaurant is dark and quiet inside. Good for date night or a romantic dinner. There is a fireplace that is super cozy and a nice bar. I would make a reservation. I have seen this place very full. On Monday you might be able to sneak in without one though. The service has always been good. Just this last time our waiter was great! He was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. For instance, my wife doesn't like rosemary and he was able to steer her around side dishes and entrees and recommend alternatives. No going back and forth to the kitchen to ask what's in the food. It's nice when the wait staff know what they are serving. I typically get the KC strip off the prix fixe menu and it's always been cooked to the right temp and the taste is great. I like the wood fired grill they use and it imparts a nice smoky flavor on the food. My wife likes the salmon for the same reasons. The cocktails are pretty good here too. I would get the smoked old fashioned or the beast of bourbon, both standouts for me. If you don't like bourbon I've gotten dirty martinis here and they were really good as well. You might try an espresso martini if that is more your style. The side dishes we have tried have been very tasty, but to be honest there's so much food to eat I usually take them home and eat them the next day. Gotta make choices to get to the dessert! If you get dessert, get the chocolate cake with raspberry ice cream. It's so good. I usually try to leave room for it. Overall, this place is very good. It's on the more expensive side but if that doesn't bother you then try it out. read more

We went to J. Gilbert's for a special occasion - my mom's birthday. The food was, as always, excellent, and the ambiance is warm and inviting. It's one of those places that feels perfect for a celebration. That said, the service experience was disappointing tonight. We waited over an hour and ten minutes for our entrees, which really took away from the evening. Working in the restaurant industry myself, I understand that average ticket times are around 20 minutes, so this felt excessive - especially for a special occasion. What made it more frustrating was the lack of communication. Our server wasn't checking in, the table wasn't being cleared, and no one offered additional bread or updates about our food. I even had to ask about our appetizer to make sure it was coming. Overall, the food and atmosphere were great as usual, but the pacing and attentiveness of service really missed the mark tonight. I'd love to see the kitchen and service team tighten up timing and communication - it would make the experience worthy of the quality the restaurant is known for. Unfortunately, I am writing this review because this isn't the first time this happened, but the second time IN A ROW. My review is for the Prime Rib. I love Prime Rib and consider myself a very knowledgeable person on the subject. Prime Rib is what I contributed to the cookbook produced by my kindergarten class back in the '60's. I know Prime Rib. Just take it off the menu. I ordered the 12oz prime rib medium. What I received was an over cooked abomination about 3/8ths of an inch thick. The most frustrating part of the experience was, I told the waiter this was my second attempt at Prime Rib at J. Gilbert's. I admitted I was one of the first customers when they introduced it to the menu and the experience was terrible. I chocked it up to being new to the menu so here's your chance to change my opinion. Bottom line. The meat was overcooked. Heat lamp exposed and nowhere near 12 ounces. It was very tender, I'll give it that. The au jus was not very flavorful. Overall our party of 12 had a great time and everyone enjoyed their food. No complaints on the steaks, appetizers or desserts. I'm simply addressing the Prime Rib offering. It misses the mark in my humble opinion. Respectfully submitted. Go back to steaks. read more

Typically this restaurant has top tier everything but tonight it was sadly off. Service was non existent and not very helpful. We felt rushed by our bill arriving with still half a bottle wine still to finish and full desserts. Sides were precooked and seemed like they had been sitting under the warmer for quite some time. When we got to dessert, some of the ice creams severed along with he velvet chocolate cake were melted by the time they made to our table. We came here for restaurant week and were very pleased! My boyfriend got the restaurant week menu which was a soup or salad, entree, and dessert. He got the blue cheese wedge salad, 12oz KC Strip, and horchata bread pudding. All of the items were good but the horchata bread pudding was great! MeiLi, our server, even gave us an extra to take home because we liked it so much. She was fantastic and attentive the whole meal. I got the wood fire ribs and they were very good.
