We went here for my birthday and it was delightful. They thoughtfully left a card on the table and gave a free dessert. Three of us had their delectable crab bisque and one a wedge salad. The steaks are so very good! I could eat that every day. Service was really wonderful- friendly people who actually seemed happy to be a part of the celebration. [I'm not kidding myself, they're paid to be like that, but it's still nice.] it was a lovely evening in a quiet restaurant, spent with family. It's one of my folk's favorite places and I can certainly see why. Even the small things are great- the whipped potatoes exceeded expectations. I got the prix fixe menu and my very favorite dessert, a wonderful crème brûlée. However, we also got a delicious, beautiful slice of chocolate cake. I learned on our most recent visit, which was on a Friday, that on most Fridays & Saturdays when they get extra busy, they open up 2 other dining rooms. They are brighter than the main dining areas, but they also lack the warmth and comfort of them too unfortunately. It kinda felt like we were in their second tier area. The food was still wonderful and our server Mei Lei was fabulous, but I wish I'd been told about where we were being seated when I made the reservation. In the future, I will request not to sit there. It's not even laid out well- I was bumped into 3 times by staff members getting water pitchers. read more

I love this place! My wife and I used to come here every couple months when we are in KC. Lately, it has fallen out of rotation for some reason. I am glad to come back and try it again. The restaurant is dark and quiet inside. Good for date night or a romantic dinner. There is a fireplace that is super cozy and a nice bar. I would make a reservation. I have seen this place very full. On Monday you might be able to sneak in without one though. The service has always been good. Just this last time our waiter was great! He was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. For instance, my wife doesn't like rosemary and he was able to steer her around side dishes and entrees and recommend alternatives. No going back and forth to the kitchen to ask what's in the food. It's nice when the wait staff know what they are serving. I typically get the KC strip off the prix fixe menu and it's always been cooked to the right temp and the taste is great. I like the wood fired grill they use and it imparts a nice smoky flavor on the food. My wife likes the salmon for the same reasons. The cocktails are pretty good here too. I would get the smoked old fashioned or the beast of bourbon, both standouts for me. If you don't like bourbon I've gotten dirty martinis here and they were really good as well. You might try an espresso martini if that is more your style. The side dishes we have tried have been very tasty, but to be honest there's so much food to eat I usually take them home and eat them the next day. Gotta make choices to get to the dessert! If you get dessert, get the chocolate cake with raspberry ice cream. It's so good. I usually try to leave room for it. Overall, this place is very good. It's on the more expensive side but if that doesn't bother you then try it out. read more

We went to J. Gilbert's for a special occasion - my mom's birthday. The food was, as always, excellent, and the ambiance is warm and inviting. It's one of those places that feels perfect for a celebration. That said, the service experience was disappointing tonight. We waited over an hour and ten minutes for our entrees, which really took away from the evening. Working in the restaurant industry myself, I understand that average ticket times are around 20 minutes, so this felt excessive - especially for a special occasion. What made it more frustrating was the lack of communication. Our server wasn't checking in, the table wasn't being cleared, and no one offered additional bread or updates about our food. I even had to ask about our appetizer to make sure it was coming. Overall, the food and atmosphere were great as usual, but the pacing and attentiveness of service really missed the mark tonight. I'd love to see the kitchen and service team tighten up timing and communication - it would make the experience worthy of the quality the restaurant is known for. Unfortunately, I am writing this review because this isn't the first time this happened, but the second time IN A ROW. We came here for restaurant week and were very pleased! My boyfriend got the restaurant week menu which was a soup or salad, entree, and dessert. I typically love J Gilbert's especially for a special occasion. We went tonight for my birthday and beginning of KC restaurant week. Typically this restaurant has top tier everything but tonight it was sadly off. Service was non existent and not very helpful. We felt rushed by our bill arriving with still half a bottle wine still to finish and full desserts. Sides were precooked and seemed like they had been sitting under the warmer for quite some time. When we got to dessert, some of the ice creams severed along with he velvet chocolate cake were melted by the time they made to our table. However, on this visit, our server, while friendly and quick with suggestions, was a little behind on tonight's service. I ordered the three course meal and a glass of wine. My first course was the French Onion soup. It was delicious, but I had barely started eating it when my entree, Aussie Lamb Rack, arrived. As I was taking my last bite of lamb, the wines I had ordered to go with the lamb, arrived. So much for timing. Oh, well, the place is still warm and inviting. Our server was very attentive and answered all our questions, esp since it was my first time there. To keep it safe, I ordered the filet mignon with mashed potatoes and creamed corn. I also has the bisque as an appetizer because why not right? Unfortunately I found the bisque a bit too salty for my preference. Very creamy, great flavor just a bit salty. The filet was cooked to my preference, which was medium rare and the mashed potatoes paired perfectly. I wasn't a huge fan of th3 creamed corn, again a bit salty for my taste. Our server Alex was absolutely delightful! Really went into detail when we had questions about the menu. I really liked the vibe that was set at the place, really great for a date night. We both had the grand prix and the steak was amazing. I got the crab cake to try something new, but personally I didn't find it as exciting as the steak. For a high end restaurant, i definitely expected this place to be nicer and the service to be top notch. Our server was fine, but would tell us he was going to bring us specific things and then completely forget. He said he was gonna get new iced tea for us and never did. I ordered the caesar salad and it was not good at all. I'm not sure if the lettuce was expired or what was wrong with it, but something was really off. I had everyone at my table try it to see if it was just me. They said it was bad too! I am not one to return dishes EVER but i couldn't eat it, it made me feel sick. the server asked if i wanted something else and i said no, it kinda ruined my appetite. He still charged us for the entire salad. I'm not sure what restaurants usually do in this situation but for a high end restaurant, i would assume that not charging us for the $11 salad would not hurt them whatsoever. The people beside us also returned a salad so i think the lettuce was just bad. I do not think i should be charged for bad lettuce. I had only taken like 2 bites. The bacon starter was good, the mac and cheese good, and crab cakes delicious. The only other thing we didn't like was the watermelon agua fresca. We would not return to this place because the food was not out of this world and service wasn't our favorite. read more

My in-laws came into town to celebrate my wife's birthday early! We got reservations before hand and were seated for 6 very quickly. Our servers were very timely throughout the night and super helpful overall! I got the tropical breeze drink which tasted amazing! It was full of fruit flavor and smoothness. Mei Li is one of the best servers I've had in a long, long time. She made our birthday dinner this evening something extra special. I had the filet and crab cake daily offering which was incredible. The cocktails were inventive and the bread is lovely. This is a perfect place to celebrate an occasion or have an intimate night out. Just be prepared for your seating area to be very dark. Ambience was great, not too loud, and the food was great, and I do not use the word great casually. Great cut of beef cooked perfectly. The sides were really good as well...very rich and flavorful.
