Came in around 10pm on a Saturday night and was seated right way. The restaurant is a pretty nice size and the decor is clean and modern.There was a DJ playing salsa music adding to the vibe. We were served tri colored tortilla chips and salsa while we looked over the menu. We placed our order and the food was at our table within 10-15 minutes. I had chicken tortilla soup and shrimp tacos. Both were delicious. My date had the Michigan burrito and enjoyed it as well. The server was nice and attentive. Not a single complaint. After months of spotting Cantaritos from the SkyTrain, I finally made a visit. Walking in, someone greets you right away before taking you upstairs. There's a doorbell that goes off constantly, which could be a little much -- but it's part of the quirkiness here. Inside is bright, colorful, and very fun, though it can get a bit loud as tables fill up. I ordered the Chiles Rellenos Queso with a Classic Michelada, and my husband had the Tortas Ahogadas with a Paloma. Everything was delicious, the cheesy filled pepper was squeaky and came with tortillas to fill with rice and beans. It was satisfying and not overly filling, our table was clear of takeout boxes, but in saying that, we didn't have room for dessert. Service was friendly -- maybe not the quickest -- but I appreciated not feeling rushed or like they were trying to flip tables. First time trying this place and did not disappoint. Ambiance is great big light with nicely done bar, tvs hanging on every wall if you want to watch a game. Our server Victor was great, efficient, knowledgeable and fast. Menu is extensive with usual staples and also some new authentic dishes I haven't seen before. Ordered: corn dish as appetizers, nachos, birria tacos and chimichangas. Tres leches for dessert. All were outstanding great flavors and big portions. Stopped by here on a cold rainy weeknight. The place was rather empty and looked more like an upscale bar than restaurant, but ... the food was good! We tried the arroz con pollo, steak fajitas, tacos Mexicanos and a margarita. Our picky 13 year old enjoyed the chicken, I had the tacos, and preferred the Al pastor one best (also tried carne asada and chicken). My boyfriend was impressed with the house-made hot sauce. Pricing was around $20 for each entree. The service was attentive, and this is a good stop of you want easier parking than a truly downtown Royal oak restaurant. I couldn't help but assume Cantaritos would be too Americanized for my liking based on its location, but I was happily proven wrong. The menu features both authentic and common Mexican dishes. The ambiance alone is a good reason to visit Cantaritos. The bar is a great spot to watch games, as it's spacious and features multiple large TVs. The interior, as a whole, is appealing and elaborate. Our meal began with complimentary chips and salsa. We also ordered guacamole and a piña colada. The guacamole was fresh and sizable, and the piña colada was tasty and refreshing. For our entrees, my wife ordered a taco salad, and I got the carne asada. I'm not a fan of taco salads, as I find them generic, but this one was inviting and flavorsome. The carne asada came out on a skillet and featured two cuts of steak, grilled onions, and a couple chile toreados. It was also served with a side dish of rice, refried beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, and tortillas. This was definitely worth getting and offered great bang for my buck. Compared to your typical, hole in the wall Mexican restaurants, Cantaritos is a bit pricier, but offers an expierence most of its competition can't. Not to mention, the food is good, as well. First time coming here on a Saturday and we were seated right away. We came around 430ish pm as well. They had a lot of seats and tables and it was very spacious inside. The food was pretty good. They give you a good amount for the price! I ordered the birria tacos dinner and they gave me a hefty amount. My husband and brother in law ordered the enchiladas and tacos locos. They enjoyed the enchiladas, but the tacos locos could have been better. We had a nice fellow as our server, just would have liked to be more attentive since it wasn't too busy, but he was nice all in all. I would come back here to try different things. After a long day at the zoo, my mom, my five year old son and I stopped in around 2:30 PM on a Wednesday afternoon. The place was completely empty and their service was still slow. We started with the chorizo queso appetizer, which was bland I had to stir the chorizo into the case on myself and the chips and salsa were any better clearly store-bought chips one small bowl of salsa for the table. The chicken wings were hot and crispy and my mom's Carne Asada steak came out how she likes it well done and steaming. Those are the only highlights. I ordered the mahi-mahi tacos and they were awful. I asked for fried corn tortillas but got hard store-bought shells and it tasted like fish sticks inside. This cost $18. Nothing about this was fresh authentic. I'm glad my mom and my son enjoyed their food, but I won't be coming back if you go here, avoid the mahi-mahi tacos and anything corn stick with the wings or steak and definitely flour tortillas only. read more

We are frequent flyers at Cantaritos. We often eat in and sometimes do carry out. You cannot beat the quality, service and value. My husband typically orders the carnitas- he says they are nice and tender and flavor is unbelievable. I almost always order the chicken enchiladas with the red sauce. The red sauce is on the sweeter side and the green sauce is a little tangy. We have tried the tres leche cake and it is definitely big enough to share with 3-4 people. read more

We ordered tacos Mexicano with chicken, added onions and jalapeños on the side, chicken taquitos, fresh guacamole, chips and spicy salsa too. $51.93. Chips and salsa isn't complimentary here. A bit unexpected, being that they claim to be a Mexican restaurant. I usually expect to pay for chips and salsa at a Mexican fusion place, but not a full fledged Mexican restaurant. Their chips are slightly seasoned here as well, it's not bad. It's not too busy in here. 4 people at the bar and about 2 other tables with guests inside and one table out on the patio. Not super busy and a bit out of the downtown area. As expected the guacamole tastes decent, it's only about one table spoon deep though, not too surprised. Their spicy salsa has good heat. Their chicken taquitos are interesting, the rolled tortilla has a flour texture and consistency of flour for us both. The menu states they are corn. Hmm. Not the same texture as we would have expected is all. The tacos Mexicanos aren't too bad. The chicken is seasoned here. Their beans and rice are bland and rather blah. Honestly have not had a bad experience. Food comes out fast, service is good and friendly. It's authentic. I haven't been disappointed. Their house margaritas aren't overly sweet like usual sweet and sour mix, which is really nice. It's never been super packed when we've been there so hope it gets busier on weekends. Had a fantastic late lunch while visiting family. Our meal started with the homemade tortilla chips and salsa. We added on the fresh guacamole (minus onions, for my benefit). It was so good that I filled up on it and could barely eat my delicious taco salad! I got it meatless (I try to go back to being a vegetarian when I'm with my mom) and didn't feel like it was missing anything. My hubbs got the chicken fajitas, which he really enjoyed, while my mom got veggie tacos and my sib also got the taco salad. Everyone enjoyed their food, and our waiter was friendly and accommodating. For our non-alcoholic drinks, my mom and hubbs spoke highly of the piña coladas and I got the Jamaica agua fresca. Not my favorite but but it was fine. My sister said her beer was good, too. We ended with the churros, of course, with ice cream. What a perfect finish! They were hot, chewy and crispy all at the same time. This was the only thing I remembered to take a pic of. I was sooooo full I couldn't eat as much as I wanted to. Had lunch here; it was just okay. Went with a friend and spent over $66 before tip for two dishes and two drinks. For a lunch meal, I thought this was a bit pricey. I had a fajitas and they certainly came out of the kitchen hot but I found the chicken to be a bit rubbery. My House Margarita definitely had a good amount of alcohol but I wasn't sure what else was in it. It was a bit one note in that sense. It needed more sweet or sour elements to offset it. I'd like to see this place have some cheaper lunch options. Also, the House Margarita was pretty big. I'm no light weight but I did feel that drink. Maybe some lunch drink specials that go a bit easier on the booze. read more

This place used to be a high end sports bar. As for ambiance, they turned the lights way up, and it is so bright, it has zero ambiance. Too bad because they are wasting some very high end finishes and some unique potential for a Mexican restaurant. This place is your typical Mexican restaurant with your typical menu. With one very big difference. Much higher quality ingredients, much better food and much better drinks. So their drinks are all hand made with only fresh ingredients. I ordered the house margarita and it's probably one of the best ones in town. Yes, even better than iron horse. They even serve some unique drinks. Food. If they upgrade their presentation, this could be a trendy high end restaurant. Oh, their beans and rice are typical Mexican restaurant slop. You get chips and salsa and they are genuinely mediocre. But for those, the quality of the ingredients of the meal is top notch and the flavor of the food is fantastic. The biggest criticism I have is their price point. They are very expensive. So expensive it's almost difficult to justify unless you are wealthy. read more

Went here for lunch today with a friend. Service was great, incredibly fast! After making our order we received our food in less than 10 minutes, which was great. I ordered the tropical gin which I did not like. I didn't taste the gin or the passion fruit, it tasted like cheap boozy orange juice. My friend enjoyed her margarita though. For lunch I ordered the Veggie Burrito. It was massive, and had a great assortment of veggies (zucchini, mushrooms, bell peppers corn) and a generous amount of melty cheese. It was very delicious and tasted great when I had the leftovers for dinner. The inside is big and looks like a typical chain/sports bar restaurant. I didn't love all the TVs everywhere, but not a big deal. I'd definitely go back, but wouldn't order a drink next time, unless they added some mocktail options. read more

Ehhhhh. Patio is cute but, It didn't start off great. I sat down and the table was dirty. The guy said he would clean it then left and never came back. When our server brought menus he looked sort of annoyed when I suggested the table needed to be wiped. He wiped it off but there were still tons of dried food spots. My water glass had something in it too so I just gave up and didn't drink the water. Fortunately , the food is mostly good. The salsa was very much store bought. I thought $15 for 3 tacos and a side of rice was steep. Apparently they give you chips and salsa for free but only for the first round which is insane. I really don't see myself rushing back here. First time visiting. Ambiance was fine, no issues. Service was very good, attentive and pleasant. Food was better than average and mostly very good. The tacos were great. Carnitas was the clear winner. Pastor tasted excellent but the texture was somewhat mushy or grainy. Not as bad as it sounds but the taste carried it no problem. The steak taco was very good as well. I may do 3 carnitas next time tho, it was that good. She got the fajitas. She says she'd give them a 5. Quality fajitas, essentially. The guacamole was good, not great. We felt it needed some salt and more lime juice, which we had available, so that brought it up to about a 7.5/10. Otherwise it was bordering on a 5/10 due to blandness. The chips were very good.
