I had had this place bookmarked for awhile, and well, on Tuesday night prior to seeing Beauty and the Beast, my roommate and I decided to skip Chipotle, be adventurous, and try out Cantina Grill; our question now is - why didn't we try this place out sooner? The ingredients here are varied and vast. Similar to Chipotle in its execution, you go down the line and choose what you want in your burrito, bowl, etc. Note that the meats are stored away and already portioned and they cook them in front of you. The same can be said if you opt for a tortilla: both flour and whole wheat available. In terms of toppings, there are definitely more than Chipotle. I was surprised to see spinach for example. Moreover, they also have a bunch of sauces like raspberry, habanero, and the like. Something to know as well is that they have desserts. It's cookie central here. All in all, the portions are huge, fresh, and healthy, but somehow my heart still belongs to Chipotle. I just don't find the food filling and that's saying something, too. I would go back if in the area for sure, but admittedly this being a few blocks down from Chipotle doesn't help me. The latest casual Mexican chain has a some important improvements over its more established competition, and that's why it gets 4 stars from me. For one, they prepared the tortilla fresh with a bread machine when I ordered my flour one. Secondly, the chicken isn't just sitting until you order. They grill the just-seasoned chicken also when I asked for it. I ordered the combo meal, which is just chips (soda is extra). However, their chunky red sauce had a good kick to it. I noticed from someone else's order they also serve cranberry sauce so that'd be an interesting fusion. Besides free refills on the freestyle soda machine, they have some boozy concoctions. Providing a similar Wynwood environment like Coyo, Cantina located in Hialeah stands on it's own as a new stylistic entry for Tex-Mex food. I ordered a chicken burrito with veggies and a side of tortilla chips. If I am being honest, they did overkill it with too much rice to fill out the body of the burrito but that's to be expected everywhere. However, the chicken tasted great and the overall flavor was well prepared and enjoyable. My meal cost under $12 with tip. Definitely pass by if you don't want Chipotle and want to try something new. This place is nice, the food is fresh and they make their own fresh burrito tortillas (check out the video I posted)! The decor is too busy for such a small dinning area (seats 34). And I think they would sell more if you could see all the hot items, like the meats, rices and beans. They keep them covered and you have to keep asking to get a look at them, like what we're used to at chipotle. You can choose from various meats or choose to go meatless. The prices range from $6.99 to $9.99, you choose to either make tacos, nachos, salad, rice bowl, quesadilla, or a burrito. You then choose your meat, or beans, rice and then your pick of as many of their veggies as your heart desires. If you go with a meat, like the chicken, you should know that they cook it as you order it, my husband requested the chicken and had them add peppers and onions to it while it was on the grill, it gave it more flavor. After you have built your items, you get to choose as many of their sauces as you want, they have about 8 of them, from the sweet chipotle one (which isn't spicy at all, and is their only vegan sauce) to their avocado ranch or jalapeño sauces to mention a few. You're not done yet, they add chips to every meal and then you get to use their salsa bar (see pics). Lots of options here, a salsa verde, Pico de gallo, corn and black bean salsa to mention a few. Oh and before I forget... CHECK IN ON YELP and get either a FREE side of GUAC or QUESO DIP!!!! The guac doesn't look that good, it looks too runny, it's not at all like chipotle's. They have the option of black beans and pinto beans which I like because you don't get that in many places believe it or not. I went at 1pm on a Saturday and it wasn't packed at all. Found this place on Yelp-- always frequent 49th street bit it's a little hard to spot. Their store sign is plastic and dark and can't be seen. Anyway, Looked at their reviews and photos and was VERY curious to try out. Husband and I arrived, the decor is very cool! Love the whole industrial, urban feel the place has-- good layout as well. The menu is similar to that of Chipotle's. One thing that bothered me was the fact that the employees fail to ask if it's your first time and/or if you need assistance. Menu could be difficult to understand, doesn't explain much. Thankfully, I knew what I wanted from the Yelp pics. We weren't the only ones that failed to understand how the place worked, two people after us mentioned it was their first time there and staff failed to explain the basics. Staff were nice, just missed that. I opted for the rice bowl w/ chicken, added and 'queso blanco', and a ton of fresh toppings. LOVE their sauces! They have raspeberry chipotle, garlic cilantro, avocado ranch to name a few. Bowl is served with fresh corn chips. Overall, SUPER tasty! One thing I loved was that you are able to add cilantro alone, as a topping. Love me some cilantro! My husband opted for the steak nachos-- HOLY NACHOS!! It's Friday and I was craving anything with guac! I was in the area and remembered this place. They are not the best Mexican food in town, but a pretty solid place to get your fix. I had a salad bowl with chicken (spring mix, black olives, corn, pico de gallo, guac). You can opt for the meal which means that you get a nice portion of tortilla chips on the side. I noticed that they never ask if you want to make it a meal so if you don't want to pay the extra $2.49 just make sure to mention it beforehand. They have good salsa options at the bar for your chips or to add to your meal. The decor is urban rustic. Reminds me a bit of Salsa Fiesta's decor. The staff here is always polite and attentive. I must say... I'm pretty excited to see a Mexican restaurant show up in this neighborhood. The taste was good. The portions are very large unless you're getting the 3 taco special which is plentiful. The menu is set up as Chipotle where you choose the style, and meat followed by your toppings. They do have a lot more toppings than Chipotle. As far as taste, I love authentic Mexican food and eat it quiet often. So needless to say I have higher expectations than the norm. For taste, I give them 3 stars but for ambiance I'm adding an extra star which is the reason for the 4 star rating. Got the Fish Nachos. I like the quantity of food and 3 pieces of fish for the price. It was $10 and some change. Was under the impression that it was 8.29 or 8.49? But the lady made it with queso and didn't tell me it was extra $. It tasted fine. Want to come back and try the burrito and quesadilla since there prices are ok. I think I have officially became a traitor to Chiptole, my first trip here was beyond comparison. The tortilla were made fresh to order, to me it look like a giant roti ready to be filled with some goodness. The servers were very helpful and extremely patient with me and the room mate since it was our first time trying it out. Me being the odd one out didn't go for the burrito even though they looked like a stuff sub ready to go to war with your stomach of flavor explosion of freshly prepared food. Instead I went for the Nachos, I do like me some nachos, and yes if I see them on the menu that will be the first thing I go for. I got the chicken nachos with extra cheese and hobanero sauce, this will be a warning/recommendation for the spicy food hater/lovers out there, it has a kick you wouldn't believe or be ready for. They gave me a mountain of chips, cheese, and chicken that seems to never end no matter how many I would eat, or where I would attack it from. I was literally in a losing battle with arguably some of the best nachos I've ever had. Sadly to say I did lose the battle, if this were Man Vs. Food, food won that night, but I did win the war. The next day I finished them off and they were still as good and as fresh as I got them. My room mate went for the burrito and to watch them make it from start to finish I dear say was a true art form. From the freshly made tortilla they make in front of you, to meat that they prepare for you on their cook top, to me it look like the Swan Lake of burrito making. They have a pretty wide selection of toppings you can add onto the burrito: lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, pico, fajita veggies, and a ton more options, and not to mention the sauces you can get with it. The food there was so fresh and healthy that I could actually make it to the movies afterward and not feel like I need to take a nap from after eating. I just needed a nap after the day I had, but that is neither here nor there, and back to the more important reason for this review, Cantina. Came here for a bite to eat really quick on a Sunday night. The prices seemed reasonable and good Mexican food is rare in Miami so why not give it a try? The decor inside is really cute and Wynwood-esque, and the presentation of the food is photo-worthy, but pretty much everything else about this place is "meh." Don't get me wrong, I know that good Mexican food options in Hialeah are slim, but if we look past our lowered standards and stop grading this place on a curve, we'll see it's mediocre and over-priced. You can choose between tacos, burritos, quesadillas, bowls, and nachos. There is a decent variety of topping and protein options, which is reasonable considering what you're being charged. I ordered the fish tacos, which come with a complimentary side of chips. The food is pretty well seasoned and edible, sure, but forgettable and just not worth the price tag and trip. If you work hard for your money (as most of us do), then you won't appreciate getting ripped off. The service also isn't terrible, but not stellar either. The ladies that work here will be nice to you if you're Hispanic, but American people (like my boyfriend) get the cold shoulder. Unprofessional. I'm scratching this one off my list of places to try for good Mexican food and not looking back. For what you're paying, you could get 4 burrito bowls that taste yummier somewhere else. The reviews looked good so I was ready for a great experience and food I ordered my food and when I'm about to ring up I show the lady my complimentary coupon for guac with a yelp check in. She said I couldn't use it. I was so confused and tried to explain to her what yelp was because I honestly didn't think she had a clue. Thankfully someone from the kitchen came out and did understand and got me the guac. The guac was free but I didn't want free guac for bad quality. I could tell it had been sitting for awhile. Creative and rustic this place appeals to those artsy types in Hialeah that are searching for a taste of what the design district offers without driving there. Much like when Starbucks first arrived to Hialeah,this place stands out in ambience. It has a similar concept to the line and buffet style toppings of chipotle with a trendier appeal. I ordered 3 hard shell tacos with pork, fish and ground beef. I recommend the pork. It's juicy and well seasoned , the fish was moist but battered so don't bother thinking about your waistline. For the area, this restaurant is fun, cool with great music , good service and decent food. There is free parking and the employees will most likely greet you in Spanish. I like this Cantina but for some reason I prefer the Kendall location better. Maybe it's because that's where I was introduced to Cantina in the first place or maybe it's because this one is on 49th street. Lord knows I'm not a fan of 49th street. Luckily when I went there was actually parking (gasp). The decor here is awesome and they are extremely friendly behind the counter. Ok let me first say, where have you been all my life? Or at least for the last six months...I use Yelp often while at work to attempt to find healthy, AND delicious food in the area. For six months, I've searched and suddenly Cantina Mexican Grill pops up! I have nothing against Chipotle but Cantina offers fish! They also have a small salsa bar and they have this FIRE habanero sauce that's to die for! So I ordered the Veggie Burrito with a wheat tortilla, brown rice (that wasn't crunchy btw ) and the vegetable options are a bit better than Chipotle, but who's comparing . Another thing...I ordered a burrito, chips, salsa, guacamole and drink and paid $10 plus. That's easily $16 at Chipotle! No but seriously, I don't want to put the competition down but I think Cantina has won me over for numerous reasons and the main reason would be, my food tasted better. Yum!!
