We don't stray far from our usual places but I felt like venturing out and following your reviews to Cantina Laredo. Our usual Mexican is Plaza Azteca, Haygood, it's right down the street and we like their frozen margaritas. I will say, did it, cross it off the list. We passed it at first, look up, it's upstairs. Found a really good spot to park at 12:30 on a Tuesday and located the elevator/stairs without any trouble. We were seated almost immediately at the table directly in front of the door. The beautifully decorated interior was warm and inviting but our table was not. Probably 15 percent of the tables were occupied and we were seated at the one that got the outdoor draft every time that door opened and closed, WHY? I'm old school, the last time I asked to be moved was to be moved away from a cigarette smoker. So, we stayed. Our server was very good, no problems here, at all, AM B was his name according to the receipt. I told him I am GF and don't like cilantro (like 9% of Americans). Well, that's what Google says. We each ordered a frozen margarita. He ordered 3 ground sirloin tacos with beans and rice. I ordered 2 fish tacos on corn tortillas with mango pineapple salsa, roasted red peppers (I picked off the cilantro) and queso fresco also beans and rice. The margaritas were well, different, maybe a different tequilla but good. My husband said his meal was without any flavor at all. Aside from my rice and beans my meal was loaded with cilantro. Could they not make up a fruit salsa without any cilantro? How about a quick veggie mix? Too much trouble? My fish was beyond dry. Oh, we were also over charged. We had an older menu. It hadn't been updated to the computer prices and we caught it. Our tab was adjusted. You can't pull a fast one on these 65 year olds and you can't seat us at the worse table or feed us poorly with out being called out on it. With tip we paid $52.14 !!!! Was really excited to try this restaurant. The atmosphere is impressive and has a pseudo upscale yet casual vibe! That said, the food was ok, however, overall quite disappointing. The Ceviche appetizer was unseasoned - and lacked acid (lemon/lime on the side should come with the order); As for the entrees... The Mixed fajitas were not bad at all, although the bacon wrapped shrimp left a lot to be desired...perhaps bacon wrapped shrimp as a stand alone but in fajitas, major lesson learned (hard pass). The Chicken and Steak fajitas were actually delicious, tender and have no complaints, however nothing to write home about-LA Hacienda, a local Mexican Food restaurant chain is far superior and significantly less expensive. Now for the fish tacos. I really appreciate the waiter asking about the food and being receptive about the feedback...I've had better fish tacos from fast food restaurants; the fish was very dry, and the chipotle sauce and pineapples seemed like a fragmented and haphazardly put together combination that just clashed. Lastly, I don't drink - and am always very specific when ordering no - alcoholic beer. My N/A beer of choice is Heineken 0.0%, and ALWAYS ask for "a Heineken non-alcoholic 0.0% beer". The waiter took our drink orders and repeated it (including the N/A beer) and I confirmed. Sometime later the drinks come and I pour the beer in the glass (my fault for not doublechecking behind the waiter, smh), and noticed as I the foam came in contact with my mouth a faint scent if alcohol...sure enough, I was provided an alcoholic drink. Thank goodness I didn't blindly take the sip and compromise over 20 years of sobriety. Bottom line, it's a decent attempt at a pseudo fusion mexi-merican or whatever the intent is...however, good intent, and poor outcome. Perhaps, for the tourist community and those who haven't had true authentic and WELL-PREPARED food this might be tasty...frankly, I would opt for taco bell over this place if given the option for a free meal, and would opt to pay for taco bell over a free meal at Laredo Cantina. I was really looking fwd to what I hoped was a well-orchestrated mastery of new age Mexican food..and usually give restaurants 3 good tries before making a determination, but on this one, the experience was disjointed and I likely will not come back - sorry, not sorry. read more

We went for Town Center Restaurant week. This was actually the only place we tried. The guacamole and cheese dip were really good - no complaints on the chips/salsa However our food I got chicken - I don't like corn tacos (that's a me thing I know) what is not a me thing is that the chicken I got tasted and looked exactly like those Tyson pre made chicken warmups. It was really flakey like it has been frozen , no seasonings. Awful. We enjoy the steak- was okay. Not anything special. The churro dessert was also just mediocre. My wife and I dined at Cantina Laredo during Virginia Beach Restaurant Week, it was our first visit. The entrees were hugh. One entree could have fed both of us nicely. We took home two to-go bags of food. She had the Fajita Tres, grilled skirt steak, chicken breast, and bacon-wrapped shrimp filled with jack cheese piled high on the plate. Three tortillas accompanied the entree. Very delicious, but an extraordinary amount. I enjoyed the Camaron Poblano Asada, Shrimp, mushroom, jack cheese stuffed poblano pepper with a fire-charred skirt steak on both sides of the pepper, cooked correctly, with chimichurri sauce, on a bed of charred street corn and cilantro lime rice. If you like a spicy dish, this one will light your mouth up. Again, very delicious, but an extraordinary amount. The service was absolutely fabulous. Ambiance is bright and clean, sort of post-industrial modern chic atmosphere. The real winner of our evening was the Mexican Apple Pie dessert. If you like cinnamon, this is your dessert. read more

We were party of 11 and we made the reservation for dinner. . This restaurant is located on the 2nd floor so there are stairs and elevator to come up. There are outdoor seating and indoor seating options with a bar inside. We got seated under 5 minutes of arriving. We ordered drinks and our server got salsa and chips. They serve fresh warm chips and 2 types of fresh salsa one spicy and one regular. After placing our drink orders our server came to us 10 mins later asking to place food order while we were waiting for drinks so we placed our dinner order. Our drinks came 30 mins after placing order and we started enjoying the drinks and chips. After 20 more minutes we asked our server to serve water and to my surprise our server told us they only server water if guests asked for it as they are running low on glasses which I have never heard of in any restraunt. After an hour + of waiting we requested manager to come and see us as there was no food was served. The manager came and told us that they have some big parties in and they are behind. My complain is that as a manager your job is to manage client expectations and would have appreciated if our server or manager has informed of delay and kept us fed with more chips and salsa, our server got us more chips but no salsa and no one asked us for drinks in between. The food we ordered finally came 1.5 hours after placing the order and the food was good. Only suggestion is to keep guests informed and engaged. read more

I could sum up this entire review with one word: Meh. Here is the longer version. Most Mexican restaurants give you complimentary chips and salsa. This place charges you $3.99. The chips were actually good but the salsa blanca (white sauce) was little more than bland sour cream and the salsa roja (red sauce) had about as much flavor as tap water with a celery stalk, seriously! The Chimichanga de Pollo with both the ranchero sauce and the queso was quite bland and the chicken was largely flavorless and a bit rubbery. The rice was actually pretty good but the refried beans were a bit off and not very palatable. My wife and I were seated across from each other on the right side of a four person table but our server seemed to have difficulty grasping the concept of serving us from the side of the table at which we were seated and instead felt compelled to reach all the way across the table from the left side. I later suggested it would be easier for her to serve us from the right side of the table, and after a while, this seemed to make sense to her. When she asked us how everything was, I was honest and replied, 'it's ok'. I only ate about half of my dinner and did not feel that I would care to finish it later if I were to take it home, so when our server asked if we would like a box I simply indicated that we were not that impressed with the food and we only needed the check. Our server friendly attentive and have a great attitude. She was even gracious and thoughtful enough to remove the $3.99 charge for the chips and salsa. In conclusion, the service, ambience and atmosphere are good, but for us, and incidentally, for the couple seated at the table adjacent to us, the food, which is the main reason for visiting a restaurant, was mediocre at best. Came here for to-go once and dine-in twice. The to-go experience I had was slightly better but for this price I'd rather go to some other Mexican places for cheaper and better food with better services. For the to-go experience I ordered the Espinaca and beef and shrimp taco for Taco Tuesday. The Espinace was pretty decent as there are lots of ingredients inside the Enchiladas. The "sour cream poblano sauce" just tasted like regular sour cream with a little lime flavor in it so I'd hope they can tell me that so I can ask them to put it on the side. There is just too much to eat it like a sauce if it's just sour cream (like how you ate too much yogurt and you want to puke). The tacos are both not impressing to me. The beef in the beef taco is so salty and I couldn't even finish it. The shrimp taco tasted weird as they put radish in it, and it tasted bland. For the dine-in experience was the main reason for my 2 star. Both times I ordered the Carne Asada Fajitas. First time was a 5-star for me. My mom and I went there for lunch and we were seated on the bar and the bartender recommended it and I loved it. The steak in my Carne Asada Fajitas was tendered and the cheese sauce was amazing. However The steak Fajitas my mom ordered was bland and small. The second time was a 1 star. My mom and I again went there for lunch and we were seated on the patio. We were greeted by the waitress and we ordered water and waited for like 10 minutes until she came back. During that 10 minutes no chips and salsa were seen (We got them within 2-3 minutes last time at the bar). Finally the waitress got our water and I asked for the chips but was also ready to order, but she left so fast for the chips as she said she "will be right back" and there we go for another 5-10 minutes. We finally got our chips and salsa from another worker and ready to order our meal after 20 minutes of sitting there doing nothing. I ordered the same Carne Asada Fajitas and my mom ordered the shrimp Fajitas. The food came in an appropriate time about 15 minutes but due to the wait from the service it was almost an hour for us to get our food, and it was a little after lunch time where there wasn't much customers. My Carne Asada Fajitas this time was a mess. Other than the sauce was still within my expectation, the rest were bad. The steak was chewy and there are lots of beans in it instead of steak. It almost tasted like a bean burrito with a little steak as a side dish. We were also running out of water and our server were nowhere to be seen. Finally we were ready for our check and our server once again were disappeared. EVERYTHING was great. We had no idea this place was so yummy. From the fresh guac to the delicious chicken I had. Even the beans on the side were awesome. I'm not a fan of the beans at most mexican places but wow... um.. yeah... they were so good that my young daughter even wanted some. Note - my daughter REALLY dislikes those beans. One of the best happy hour spots in Town Center! I've been dying to check out Cantina Laredo because let's face it, I'm a sucker for anything "rooftop". If you park in the blue garage (free), the second floor has a bridge that you can walk over and takes you right to the restaurant. So convenient! To get the Happy Hour deal you have to sit at the bar (whomp whomp). I was a little sad to not sit outside on the patio, but with those happy hour prices I would sit anywhere they told me! The bartenders were very nice and our food and drinks came quickly. To start we got the chips and salsa (normal and hot option), as well as the Queso Y Guacamole Combo. That queso was top notch!! For entrees we got the Chicken Quesadillas and Flautitas. Don't let the photos fool you, it was just the right amount of food. There was a hefty amount of chicken in those quesadillas and I left feeling very full. Our bill ended up being under $30 for an appetizer, two entrees, and 2 drinks. SOLID 4 star restaurant Cantina Laredo has here in Virginia Beach. Starting with its prime location across the street from Ruth Chris and the like, this chic spot offers patio seating on the second floor which offers those dining an incredible view of the happenings going on below. My handsome date ordered the mahi-mahi tacos and seemed to enjoy them very much. I ate some of his cilantro rice and black beans and enjoyed them although they were a tad bland in favor. I ordered the shrimp salad which was beautifully presented on plate and very filling for an entree salad. I really enjoyed the sweet salad dressing and I typically HATE sweet stuff. Speaking of sweet, DONT TRY THE PINEAPPLE MARGARITA!!!!! At least that's my opinion and advice- it was WAY TOO sweet and didn't taste anything like a margarita to me. The chef has designed an incredible menu and everyone in our party of 9 absolutely loved the food. The atmosphere was also amazing, HOWEVER... I'd give this place 1 or 2 stars alone for how terrible the hostesses are. I called a week in advance to make birthday reservations for 7. Find out a couple days later 2 more would be joining. I tried for 3 days to call and change the reservation and could never get anyone on the phone after that. I did however leave a VM and received a refreshed text about a day later reconfirming the res so I assumed all was well. We arrive and notice both hostesses playing on their cell phones as we walk in. I verbally say, "Hey there! (My name) reservations for a party of 9." She looks up all grumpy, looks at her computer and says the wrong name and head count back to me. I correct her and mention the updated head count again. Both disappear around a wall to set the table up. This was probably wrong on our part but as a harmless joke my brother in law and I picked up one of the cell phones and engaged the camera to take a selfie with my husband, who was celebrating his birthday. We were all in a goofy mood and it was meant as a total joke. Anyway, he goes for the second phone to do the same just as hostess rounds the corner and we both giggle and drop it. Apologizing right away. She did not take it in stride and proceeded to be incredibly rude to the whole party. Flinging menus, showing us to an incorrectly sized table and curtly or sarcastically saying, "Have fun." When I gently inquired about the other two seats and menus she defended with, "well the reservation was for 7" and shrugged and walked off. Yikes. I can't remember if it was the server or other host who finally jumped into action helping us fix the matter but the rudeness felt so unnecessary. Crime not fitting the punishment and all that. But whatever! Server was great. Food was fantastic. And like I said, loved the atmosphere, just wish management would consider hiring nicer hosts who actually want to be there. I had been eyeing this place for sometime now and I finally got a chance to check it out. The view alone is what drew me and who doesn't love Mexican food? Because of the location in town center just park in the garage and walk over. It's a very cute spot with an overlook of town center. When we arrived we were seated quickly but of course there is a wait for the outside patio seating. I ordered the basic margarita and strawberry which was really really really good. I also got three tacos: Barbacoa fish and steak. The tacos were very ehh The toppings is what really save the flavor the meat was not seasoned and I personally like my corn tortillas to be a little crispy you could tell that these were taken out of the pack and just not warmed it all. I know that seems like a small thing but the prices are kind of up there and I just expected a better quality meal. The real Banger was the black beans I will come back for those alone! Honorable mention: they offer a plant-based completely meatless menu. I was super shocked to see that at a Mexican restaurant because I've never seen anything like it and believe it or not they have quite a few items listed The service was not all that. The server was not knowledgeable of the menu and you could tell she was just making suggestions just to make them not because she like them or could speak to them. Nice spot for date night! The menu is slightly varied from your standard Mexican restaurant, which is fun and makes for an interesting change. The restaurant is located on the second floor of a Town Center building, overlooking the main square and has a good view from the balcony. There is an elevator to get to the second floor, as well as a staircase. We've been here a couple times and enjoy the ambiance. It was a little hot where we were seated next to a window yesterday, and we wished they would try to keep it cooler inside on such a hot day. Last night we ordered the Top Shelf Guacamole to start, then pollo asado tacos and carne tacos. The taco entrees come with three tacos and with a side of black beans and rice. We requested flour tortillas as all the tacos are usually made with flour tortillas. The guacamole was loaded with all kinds of delicious ingredients! It's advertised on the menu as being made tableside, but was brought out to us already prepared in a bowl. We enjoyed this with tortilla chips, along with the two complimentary salsas- one mild and one spicy. The pollo asado tacos came topped with many flavorful ingredients, including pineapple-mango pico de Gallo with was a highlight. They went a little heavy with the sauce and cheese but these were still very good. The carne tacos were made with delicious grilled skirt steak. Some of the toppings included pico de Gallo, cilantro, avocado slices, and sour cream. The steak was especially good. Skirt steak is perfect in a taco! It's a bit on the pricey side but you do get a chic interior look and the plating is lovely. Our server was friendly and helpful. Great spot to deviate from your normal fare! read more

If you're trying to live the plant based lifestyle, a lot of restaurants don't really have much love to show you besides the kind of salad that might as well have a neon sign that says "you don't belong here." Cantina Laredo has your back We ordered the black bean quesadilla and the vegan enchiladas and we are certain that we have found out plant based spot in Town Center. Now, the enchiladas weren't perfect. There were more Italian flavors than Mexican. But the remarkable thing here is that instead of offering a ton of meat substitutes, this dish celebrated vegetables. The enchiladas had this kind of wholesomeness that made it easy to look past the fact that it tasted more like a pasta dish than something with a tortilla. The quesadilla was a different story. That quesadilla was bad to the bone. That quesadilla was mean. That quesadilla had this attitude like it was bringing all the flavor and it didn't care if you could handle it or not. This dish had so much buttery cheesy goodness we had to ask the waiter (shout out to my man Brock) if it was really vegan. When he came back confirming it was totally plant based, the wife and I knew right then and there that we could live happily on that dish for the rest of our lives. Laredo isn't perfect. The music is a little on the loud side, and two of the three cocktails we ordered were just busted. I would recommend sticking with beverages that are on draft or in a bottle. But the truth is, if you need a good vegan meal while partying it up in Virginia Beach's social epicenter, Cantina Laredo is ready for you. read more

I am not partial to always picking Mexican but today I did and it did not disappoint. Service: Since today is my birthday and can't be around family, I asked the server to sit me in a quiet corner so my boyfriend could FT me during my meal so we could be on a virtual date & I could hear him. The hostess was very quick to pick out the corner and sat me there once the customers left (which was 5 minutes later). The server was so cute. She brought me a brownie and ice cream for my birthday. Always had my coke full... important since the server can really only be in charge of the drink. Food: I ordered the Camaron Poblano Asada and it was SO GOOD! One of their signature items. I had a lovely visit here. I asked to be seated outside and got a great table with my back to the sun. The table was a little dirty, but soon after I was seated they were all cleaned down. All the staff was gracious and friendly, especially my lovely waitress - Ashley! She knew lots about the menu and had spot on recommendations. I tried 2 of the house margaritas. The Smokey one was good, with a very unique taste. It wasn't spicy though. The blood orange one was sweeter, but tasted great, esp with a salt rim. Both of the free starter salsas were tasty, the spicy wasn't that spicy though. I'm not a huge fan of the shallow dish, I like a big heaping pile of salsa on my chip! The tacos came out in good time. They were cooked nicely and the avocado and mango salsa and the fancy sauce all went together great. They Mexican rice tasted great and was fresh. The black beans were fine. It's definitely an American Mexican food joint, so it's not traditional. The carne asada is more just like a steak, not authentic carne asada. I'm bothering to take the time to write this, in the off-hand chance that the bartender who "served me" on 16 Jan will be clear as to why she got no tip. First, I love to tip for decent service. It doesn't have to be the best. But here's the service that will get you nothing, each and every time: I came to the bar to order take out after having worked a long day in health care, walking on a torn meniscus. I took a seat at the bar and patiently waited for the bartender. After a short wait, she came over to the patron seated two seats over from me. She never looked at me, but I heard her say something that sounded like, "Can I help you?" I looked up and she still wasn't looking at me, so I asked, "Are you speaking to me?" Then she looked at me and said yes. Ok, that's weird, but whatever. I stated I wanted to place a take out order and she gave me the menu. She came back a few minutes later and asked what I wanted. I'm waiting there and she does not offer a glass of water but I was given chips and salsa. Then 5 minutes later she asks me again if I'm ready to order. Surprised, I repeat, I'll have the Cancun". We should be good, right? Oh no. 15 minutes I'm waiting, hungry, tired after working a long day. She comes back, "are you ready to order?" I looked at her like she's lost her mind. I say, "This is the THIRD time I'm giving you my order.. just like I told you in plain English twice before what I wanted. No apology, No "Oh I'm sorry I didn't hear you." Nothing. I am only leaving two stars because the staff was very nice, but this burrito was the worst burrito I've ever had in my life. Please do not do this to yourself. You can get better food at Taco Bell. It was taken off after talking to manager, but I was originally told that it could not be taken off or replaced. - I was given carbonated water instead of sprite. When I told the waiter he said that he figured that it was. I'm not sure why he felt it was ok to give me the drink if he figure that it was carbonated water. Gave citrus drink to someone who was allergic and put lime on tacos their tacos. - drink tasted like cough syrup - Asked for double rice and didn't get it. - Brought two people in the party the wrong order - The fajita tortilla was wrapped in a napkin and placed on the table without notice, so the tortillas fell on the floor - We waited an hour for drinks and even longer for food even though other people had already gotten theirs that came after us. read more

I really like this place! We came for dinner on Mother's Day. There was a live mariachi singer that sang and walked around the restaurant. They have great chips and salsa. The chips were fresh and thin just the way I like them. I always get the Carne asada entree with extra chimichurri sauce.. soo good! They have the best Mexican Apple Pie!! read more

Bartender was dead slow. They don't know the definition of Cantina. For a cantina all Drinks create the highest profits,. The waiter tried to bring us the drinks but it looks like the bartender does whatever she wants. Food was the same as any other non authentic "Mexican" restaurant. Don't waste your money and time. Such a perfect location, in the middle of town center. This is my second time coming here. The first time I came here, they had given me the wrong order. Second time was a better experience. The interior is modern and clean. The manager was very nice to stop by our table and welcome us to their restaurant. The service was a bit of a bust since it took almost an hour and a half to get our food. Our waitress was very kind and constantly checked on our table. Food was delicious. I ordered the Impossible Bowl - $11.99 and my fiancé ordered the Chimichanga w| rice and beans (not sure how much it was). Overall, the place was very clean, and the food was great. I was pleasantly surprised. The other reviews seemed to indicate that this place was all glitz without any substance. The food was actually good. We only got a couple of tacos, chips, queso and salsa. They were all very good. The place is known for its drinks. My bed drink was good. I had this place bookmarked for months and was so excited when my daughter mentioned she wanted to go for her birthday. Unfortunately it was not the greatest experience. We were seated immediately upon entering. The place is gorgeous, perfect setting for a date night or even a girls night. Our waiter brought over the chips and dip which were really good. I mentioned the free guac that Yelp had provided if you checked in. Our waiter seemed to not know about the promo so he went to ask. The guacamole was the best part of the meal. I would return just to eat the guacamole. I ordered the fish tacos with rice and beans with an extra side of elote. It was also ladies night so we got the margarita. That was tasty as well. They do have a happy hour menu which I planned to order from but we found out you can only order from that menu if you sit in the bar area. That was a little disappointing. The food took a while to come out. None of us were really impressed with the food. The fish was super bland and the rice and beans were really salty. My daughter was a little disappointed because she assumed she would get refried beans because that's what's common at other Mexican restaurants. They serve black beans which she doesn't like. As we we got our check I realized I never got the elote and he still charged for the guac. It took about 20 minutes to get out check situated. For the price of the food I'm expected a little better.
