This is my go to spot but last night just didn't sit well with the stomach, I'm not sure the oil they cook the food in but not quality at all. Service was immaculate, waiter was very attentive. The restrooms were terrible as well, but the inside and outside were clean. I didn't get the greatest experience so I'm not sure when I'll be back!

This is an overall view of the restaurant. Photo taken October 21, 2020.

Guads Mexican Restaurant is located in the Hilltop Plaza Shopping Center. I've passed the place countless times over the years, but never made the time to come in until recently. It is located near Trader Joe's and Ulta Beauty (where JoAnn Fabrics used to be located). There is ample parking in the area, but some of the parking spots are pretty skinny. Both vehicle and pedestrian traffic can be busy at times, especially around the Trader Joe's. My visit to Guads Mexican Restaurant was on October 21, 2020. As noted above, I've passed this place several times over the years, but never made a visit there until this year. I'm not sure why I haven't been in sooner. What brought us to the area was due to an appointment my mom had at the DMV to have her license renewed. We got there around 4:30 pm that day and it was empty at the time. This is not unusual for us to go somewhere before places get busy, especially given the current environment we are in. When you first come in, there is hand sanitizer available. Both staff and guests are required to wear masks, but guests can remove their masks while seated at the table. We were immediately greeted and got to a table. Our server asked us what we wanted to drink and gave us menus to look over. We were also given chips and salsas as well, which is typical for this type of restaurant. This place offers Pepsi products. After he came back with our drinks, we were pretty much ready to order. The first part of the order was cheese dip. I ended up going with the Mexican Pizza with chicken as the protein for my entrée. My mom went with the Taco Loco with shrimp. Our server did great giving us time to indulge in the cheese dip before the entrées came out. It was about ten minutes later when the food came out. The Mexican Pizza with chicken was really good. It may look small when looking at photos, but it packs a good amount of food. I was full and then some when I was done. My mom liked the Taco Loco with shrimp as well (taco salad). Likewise, it may look small in photos, but there's quite a bit in a small shell so to speak. Our server did check up on us a few times to make sure all was good and they did great with keeping up on drink refills too. Overall, food and service were great at this location from this first visit. Food and service are the biggest factors when it comes to returning to a restaurant in the future. When I am in this area again in the future around lunch or dinner time, I will definitely consider coming back here again and again. So, if you are looking for a Mexican restaurant in this area, this is definitely a great place worth checking out.

Don't get the birria tacos. DOOOO GET THE FAJITAS!!!! mouth watering tender and juicy. Totally worth the $$ !!! Best dish in menu hands down

This is third guads I have been to. Usually end up here because someone else wants to go. Food here is generally underwhelming. I ordered a steak rancheros. It was served to me whole but with tortillas.... well, which is it? Is it a fajita or do I eat it like a steak? I decide to eat it like a steak, not feeling the rest of the ingredients combined in a tortilla would improve the overall flavor profile. My husband ordered chimichangas and although they served a healthy portion, it too, was not very impressive. We also ordered table side guacamole, asking for extra spicy. Guacamole was nowhere near spicy and I felt he gave us a very skimpy amount. With the Mexican scene slowly growing on hampton roads, I think I will go elsewhere. On the positive side, I've had their margaritas and they are pretty good but not enough for me to want to fill up on their food.

I've had my fair share of Mexican food and this place didn't impress. My boyfriend and I decided to try it out after getting groceries next door. We were sat immediately. The food came out promptly too. I'm leaving 3 stars because the food was just okay. The salsa was watery and didn't have much flavor, the white sauce was only half full in the bowl when it was brought out, and the rice was mushy. We wouldn't go out of our way to eat here again.

Here's the deal: Jessy's is located in a small shopping strip. While the building is a little older I did not think l it run down or in a part of town that I would consider questionable at all. I saw at least one review that noted this- could not disagree more., nothing to fear here. Plenty of parking and it's free! Once inside the restaurant is medium sized with seating for at least 15 parties and tables that can accommodative larger parties, 10+ people. There are two order stations at either side of the restaurant - one for hot food the other for ice cream and desserts. Service was friendly and attentive. You can choose to self order for takeout or be waited on. While staff wait on and bring you food and drink, pay is self pay at the food order counter. The menu is larger and has something for everyone. Proteins are optional for nearly every dish. The food here is authentic with lots of protections including some of my favorites- Al pastor and chicken tinga. Chips and salsa are scratch made and fresh- very good. We had street tacos which were very flavorful and also scratch cooked including the corn tortillas. Served with traditional hot sauces to add that little extra heat- awesome. The Al pastor was not grilled to get that char that some Al pastor dishes have but was otherwise spot on. Chicken tinga was perfect. If you are looking for authentic Mexican at reasonable prices, this is your place and absolutely worth a few minutes drive over. Hope to see you there sometime- happy eating!

Happy hour was 3-6pm I think, and there were 2 taco specials on the board. I'm not sure if it was valid or not.. There was one person at the bar taking orders, serving drinks, and pretty much running the place. She was very busy. The anxiety of watching her try to handle everything made me a little uncomfortable. She was doing her best, and kuddos to her for not flipping a table and walking out. She was nice, but she asked us every 3-4 minutes if we knew what we were ordering. It was very aggravating. I don't think she realized after several times we were over it. The inside is pretty much a bar setting with a few booths. It's very dated and low-key kind of gloomy inside. I'd say this is a bar for locals, not really a restaurant. It's definitely the kind of food you could eat if you had a few drinks, maybe. But sober, heck no!! Lol. Ugh. I was excited to try them because they have some 5 star reviews, but it wasn't what I expected. When it was time to eat she went and got the cook from outside. We ordered 2 burgers and fries, and chicken nachos. We left and came back to pick up our order and the seats at the bar was packed at this point. The waitress met us as we walked in, with our food. I was hungry, so I tried the food in the car. The burger was definitely a frozen patty and thick as heck. It looked decent kinda sorta, in a way, maybe, just a little bit. Idk what to say. The fries were crispy but awkwardly greasy!! There was one tiny tomato on my burger and a huge onion that was a little moldy. I've never seen someone use a slice of onion this big on a burger. The burger definitely needed seasoning. I think if it had flavor it would have been decent. I'll give the burger a 4/10. My sister got the chicken nachos and she was not happy. Whatever mystery beans they had made were disgusting. They tasted old or something was off about them. The guacamole was a little sour tasting also, and the chicken was flavorless. She tried so hard to make it work, she even re-cooked the beans and it just didn't help. 2/10!!! She spent $25 and felt it was the worse decision she made all day. I wish I was exaggerating or something, but this is actual factual. The prices are reasonable, I'll say that. But it's definitely certain things to stay away from on the menu. I don't think we'd ever return. Maybe the tacos are better than what we had ordered. If you're looking for a drink maybe things would be better. I think they specialize in drinks over food!?
