Came here on a Friday for lunch with friends. Even though there is plenty of parking it is still hard to find parking because it isin a busy shopping center with Trader Joes. Need I say more? We were sat immediately and the staff was so friendly. They truly made the experience fun. The food was good and I heard no complaints from anyone. They brought us more chips without us asking. They have HH all day. Say less. Yes....I had a HH margarita. It was good. I believe it was a mix and not fresh but I was expecting that. We took advantage of the lunch special and I got the Taco Loco. OMG.....what a great presentation!!! I loved the bowls. It's going to be hard for me to not keep ordering that. I had fish tacos there recently and they were not good. Bland and inedible is mostly how I would describe them. I didn't finish them and ended up eating rice and beans. We recently had lunch at Guads Mexican Restaurant in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach and we mostly enjoyed our experience. I love good Mexican food and when I find a place that serves it consistently, I tend to stick with them. Unfortunately for Guads, they sometimes run hot and cold. I've had some really good food there, and some marginal at best items as well. It gives me no pleasure to have to complain to the manager about a bad food situation, that really ruins my experience. When I do feel the need to make a complaint, I try to do so in a constructive manner. I'm not looking for any special treatment or anything like that. It's more to help them become aware of their shortcomings, so hopefully they can make some positive changes. It really gets me upset when something comes out cold and a new plate is sitting in front of me in less than 5 minutes. We both know that you put it in a microwave. I don't want that. This is my go to spot but last night just didn't sit well with the stomach, I'm not sure the oil they cook the food in but not quality at all. Service was immaculate, waiter was very attentive. I just stopped in with my husband for early dinner. I ordered the camarones al mojo de ajo. This was the most horrible take on a very simple dish I have ever had. They tasted like the were frozen shrimp that had been defrosted using hot water. There had no seasoning. I generally don't add salt to my food and even the addition of salt could not help. They tasted like rubbery hot water. I ate two pieces and was done. When asked if I wanted a box, the answer was no! I suggest they call any of the other local Mexican restaurants like Jessy's, Jose Tequilas, or Las Palmas for advice on how to cook this dish. read more

Guads Mexican Restaurant is located in the Hilltop Plaza Shopping Center. I've passed the place countless times over the years, but never made the time to come in until recently. It is located near Trader Joe's and Ulta Beauty (where JoAnn Fabrics used to be located). There is ample parking in the area, but some of the parking spots are pretty skinny. Both vehicle and pedestrian traffic can be busy at times, especially around the Trader Joe's. My visit to Guads Mexican Restaurant was on October 21, 2020. As noted above, I've passed this place several times over the years, but never made a visit there until this year. I'm not sure why I haven't been in sooner. What brought us to the area was due to an appointment my mom had at the DMV to have her license renewed. We got there around 4:30 pm that day and it was empty at the time. This is not unusual for us to go somewhere before places get busy, especially given the current environment we are in. When you first come in, there is hand sanitizer available. Both staff and guests are required to wear masks, but guests can remove their masks while seated at the table. We were immediately greeted and got to a table. Our server asked us what we wanted to drink and gave us menus to look over. We were also given chips and salsas as well, which is typical for this type of restaurant. This place offers Pepsi products. After he came back with our drinks, we were pretty much ready to order. The first part of the order was cheese dip. I ended up going with the Mexican Pizza with chicken as the protein for my entrée. My mom went with the Taco Loco with shrimp. Our server did great giving us time to indulge in the cheese dip before the entrées came out. It was about ten minutes later when the food came out. The Mexican Pizza with chicken was really good. It may look small when looking at photos, but it packs a good amount of food. I was full and then some when I was done. My mom liked the Taco Loco with shrimp as well (taco salad). Likewise, it may look small in photos, but there's quite a bit in a small shell so to speak. Our server did check up on us a few times to make sure all was good and they did great with keeping up on drink refills too. Overall, food and service were great at this location from this first visit. Food and service are the biggest factors when it comes to returning to a restaurant in the future. When I am in this area again in the future around lunch or dinner time, I will definitely consider coming back here again and again. So, if you are looking for a Mexican restaurant in this area, this is definitely a great place worth checking out. read more

One of the worst lunches I've ever had in a Mexican restaurant. Bland and flavorless are both understatements. The chili rellenos are not even traditional chili rellenos, they were over cooked poblanos with greasy white American cheese inside, covered in tomato water. It was literally inedible. My husband got chimichangas, which he ordered beef but was brought out chicken. The chicken was clearly boiled and was completely unseasoned. The server never once offered more chips and salsa, and we had were a party of 4. I have no idea how they stay in business with such terrible food and lackluster service. This is third guads I have been to. Usually end up here because someone else wants to go. Food here is generally underwhelming. I ordered a steak rancheros. It was served to me whole but with tortillas.... well, which is it? Is it a fajita or do I eat it like a steak? I decide to eat it like a steak, not feeling the rest of the ingredients combined in a tortilla would improve the overall flavor profile. My husband ordered chimichangas and although they served a healthy portion, it too, was not very impressive. We also ordered table side guacamole, asking for extra spicy. Guacamole was nowhere near spicy and I felt he gave us a very skimpy amount. With the Mexican scene slowly growing on hampton roads, I think I will go elsewhere. On the positive side, I've had their margaritas and they are pretty good but not enough for me to want to fill up on their food. read more

Here comes my frank and forthright review of Guad's: It's been a very long time since we got Mexican cuisine here, so we decided to get some takeout for a belated Mother's Day treat. I was hesitant, because the 2 previous times we did Mexican takeout from DIFFERENT restaurants we knew and liked for dining-in, the experience was exceptionally disappointing. Cold food, tiny portions, missing things, etc. I am happy to report Guads did NOT disappoint, and in fact, we were well pleased. We got a Fajitas-For-Two order of Texas fajitas. Mom ordered a combo with 2 enchiladas and 1 taco. Both orders came with rice and beans. The fajitas had 2 containers of quac salad. And they included a big bag of chips with red and white sauces. And they remembered to give us 2 packs of tortillas for the fajitas, both still warm. The food was still warm. The portions, while never the same size as what you get dining-in, were still adequate and we were quite happy with it all. Frankly, it felt good to finally get Mexican takeout at Guads, where they didn't shortchange us and leave us feeling regret, as other Mex restaurants have. Yesterday I was at Trader Joe's, and locked my keys in my car. I decided to go to Guads and eat while I waited. I explained to the Manager that I would be paying as soon as my car was unlocked. I ordered their tacos, which were DELICIOUS, and I was in there waiting for 2hrs for the tow truck. They never asked me to get up and leave, they trusted me, and gave me great service. The best menu items are: Shrimp tacos (corn tortilla) Shrimp quesadilla Buffalo Shrimp starter Fresh guacamole Frozen In house margarita Polo Americano (rice and chicken smothered with a cheese sauce) The complimentary chips are warm and the salsa endless. We're sitting here eating the best brisket tacos ever when we witness either the manager or maybe a waiter do the kindest thing. An older gentlemen in a wheelchair needed help getting to his car. I have high expectations being from Texas and I'd say this restaurant passed mine. I ordered the pollo Americano and it was delicious. The grilled chicken and rice was exceptional the cheese dip of course topped it off! My husband loved his plate as well. We were very impressed with the service too our drinks and chips were kept full. The restaurant had a fun atmosphere they all say "hola" and try to keep it as close to an authentic feel as possible.
