Incredibly slow service. From sitting to soup was 30min. I am solo so not like I am having a social meal. Soup was good. An hour in and I am wondering if I want to wait for my lunch meal to arrive. So finally the main dish arrives. The Chicken Chow Mein on one side, the pork fried rice on the other. Presentation was very good, quantities were excellent. The quality of the food ingredients was well above average Chinese lunch levels. Typical cheap Chinese lunches are $4.50 - $6. The prices here are higher. This dish was $8.50 but the value increase was significantly higher than the pricing differential. I would have rated the food a 4+ and service a 1. The wait should tell you how good it is...but the food will finish the job if you still need convincing. Authentic like the village in China where I still have an apartment? No. Authentic like the hundreds of restaurants I have eaten in all up and down the vast country of China? No. Better than most bland / boring round-eye white boy Chinese food you typically find all around the lovely Santa Cruz area? Yes. The best part? If you ask nicely and tell them how you would prefer they make certain dishes...they do it without any fuss. I like my Kung Pao Chicken made with just green onions, peanuts, chili peppers, and chicken in a hot sauce. No broccoli, no carrots, no celery, no surprises. So in Santa Cruz there are so many other Chinese places you can spend your money. 1st of all, we got to our table and my girlfriends lemonade had little black crumbs or something in it. The waitress saw her messing with it and didn't say something until the next time she came around. We waited a whole hour for our main dishes. We received our miso soup and rice which was subpar. And then continued on waiting and watching everyone that came in after us get their food, eat and leave. 2nd the waitress brought us a salad on the house for the wait which I enjoyed but my girlfriend said it tasted like lettuce with peanut butter. She brought our first meal out which was the wrong meal! We had to send that back. 3rd our meal came out and yeah it tasted okay but we were just so disappointed to even finish it we just wanted to leave. Lastly, our waitress apologized numerous times and said "it's normally not like this" and gave us 20% off and free refills and said "this is all I can give you" for a $27 meal , making it only $22 is not a big difference especially since the wait was literally forever. She then brought us fortune cookies which are normally the cherry on top, but OH MY GOSH did they taste like salt!!! Didn't even taste sweet or good. Was so disappointed. There are lots of choices for Chinese in the Capitola/Live Oak area. I do not recommend this one. A notable exception in its favor is that it serves cocktails, not just beer and wine, as many other Chinese places do. The food is really just okay. Potstickers were fine but not served with the expected sauce. Whatever you do, do not order Korean BBQ ribs-inedible. We've tried this place twice and have been disappointed both times. Think we'll stick with Chinese Village-it's closer to our house and better. read more

Quality has gone down our last two visits. General Tso's and Broccoli Beef still good. But Pork Fried Rice was dry and flavorless and the Kung Pao chicken was slimy and had two peanuts in the whole dish. read more

Service was very rude. Almost like she didn't want us to be there. Then three things happened with our bill: 1) We were charged NON-happy hour prices even though it was happy hour. She corrected the bill and brought it back. 2) A mysterious appetizer showed up on the new bill. We asked to remove it. 3) Later, when I was checking my Visa bill, I noticed that Canton had deliberately charged me $2 extra compared to my signed receipt (Even with a 16% tip)! I normally hate Chinese food. I think it tastes like plastic. You know mystery meat that's super chewy. My husband loves it so for the law of love I agreed. I love the option for brown rice. The food is all fresh and local and I was impressed no plastic meat. I'm only giving 3 stars because the food was good but service could use some improvement. We went in for a early dinner. We arrived at Canton with 5 friends on New Year's Day. The restaurant was fairly empty and the staff took quite a bit of time to seat us. We shrugged off the wait and happily say when our table was given to us. About 10 minutes later our waitress arrived. She didn't not seem friendly but we figured she was probably just tired. She brought us water and returned about 10 minutes later to take our order. We read in the menu that it happy hour was everyday from 3-6 so we ordered a couple items from the menu. She told us that she didn't think happy hour was applicable on holidays and we said that's ok and she rudely took the rest of our order. After taking our orders she returned and said her boss would allow happy hour because she's a people pleaser. She mad us feel like we were hard to please and they were only doing this to keep us happy. It was down right rude. We asked for a different server and she seemed unphazed. We quickly talked about her service and decided it was best to leave. This was the first time any of us had walked out of a restaurant. Do not go to this establishment if you're looking for friendly service. read more

Horrible service. Never again! Appetizers were just "ok" but took 30min. Drinks were good. It's hard to screw up drinks. But after we ordered our entree we we passed up by others who had been seated after we had arrived. Larger groups took precedence and the couples seated were left in the dust with an hour long wait for their food and it being ice cold upon arrival. We refused to pay for our entrees. They argued with us and tried to "hold us hostage" till we paid but eventually we forcefully just walked through them and out the door. Canton is a fabulous place to go for lunch or dinner. I had the chicken fried rice and it was AWESOME, being packed with flavor and great textures, it all blended well together. Canton is probably one of the best Chinese food restaurants in Capitola! The food is considerably delicious.They also have plenty of Vegetarian options! YUM! Great tasty food without breaking the bank. Hubby ordered a combo plate for dinner. Best tasting Chow Mein we've ever had. The Sweet and Sour Pork was cooked perfectly, and for the first time I now understand the meaning behind the name. Definitely wasn't the typical syrupy sweet dish, we could actually taste the sweet at the beginning and the sour towards the end. I ordered the WonTon soup which was also very flavorful. This place is so hit or miss. It's either really great or awful. We went here years ago and walked out because there was no one to seat us and there was a table with food left on it so long there were flies. A friend of ours really loves this place so we decided to try again. We have been going for about 8 months now (5-6 times) and the last 2 times there were rotten milk (mistakes are made I know) but no apology, the waitress even argued with us and said she had 3 people in the back try it and only 1 person thought it tasted funny..... Last time we were here they were so understaffed we watched 2 families of 4+ sit down get no service (not even water) and leave! Take out is even worse. Our take out took over an hour. They said 15 min on the phone. We get there and wait 45. When were there last there were people waiting for their take out the ENTIRE time we were eating. The wait staff was not apologetic at all. It really doesn't take much to say "Hey we are short staffed, sorry for the wait" every single person eating that night had to get up to ask for their check. Best Chinese food in Santa Cruz county!! Clean, fresh and a really nice place to eat. Great staff. This is a family run place for sure which I like. I've been here a bunch of times and I like all the fried rice, egg rolls and fried won tons with cream cheese. If you ask them to make is really spicy they will make it spicier. Stopped here on our way home from Monterey as I had a craving for Chinese. Ordered Cantonese chow fun, mapo tofu, pork fried rice, Szechuan string beans, potstickers, and walnut shrimp. Fried rice and potstickers were decent. I enjoyed the string beans and mapo tofu (which many places just don't get the flavoring right for my taste). The chow fun had way too many bean sprouts so that was a minor negative. The walnut shrimp though was a bit disappointing because I didn't like the taste of the oil they used to fry the shrimp, it didn't have enough sauce on it (to help mask the slightly burnt oil flavor) and the walnuts weren't candied enough (arguably my favorite part of walnut prawns). The staff were very friendly though. All in all, it fulfilled my Chinese food craving. It just wasn't epic. read more

It also didn't help that our server acted like her job was about as fun as swallowing broken glass. So disappointed to have wasted a dinner there during our trip.
