Get the Szechuan string beans if nothing else and thank me later. These were the most delectable green beans I have ever eaten and were seriously epic. Crispy, crunchy, full of life and yet packed a punch. They are apparently made with organic beans and I am still salivating thinking about them. Green beans aside, we arrived here on a Friday evening. Parked at the back where there is plenty of parking and were greeted by a homely looking lady. After walking in and looking around at the completely empty restaurant we were skeptical about staying back for dinner but so glad we didn't listen to our gut feeling, haha. Ambiance is outdated, I didn't mind it though. Since we could only eat vegetarian dishes that day this is what we ordered. Green beans- 5/5- best I have ever eaten, I can eat this every day if the Aunty at this restaurant can cook it for me!!! Mapo tofu- 5/5- I am not a fan of mapo tofu and steer clear of this dish as it's normally very oily but the hostess suggested I get it. These were mind blowing as well. The tofu was like butter, just slid down the throat leaving a wonderful flavor in the mouth. Egg fried rice-4/5- plain version with just eggs and green onions, reasonably decent with some umami. Corn soup- 3/5- a little too sweet for my liking, couldn't taste any umami at all. The hostess/owner was wonderful. She reminded me of my mom/aunts who just keep piling up our plates with delicious food though we keep saying we are full. Though I was skeptical about the restaurant being empty, I can vouch for the fact that they cook some of the most delicious, clean Chinese food. Do give them a try if you are in the area. read more

I completely understand why if you search for Asian food on Yelp, this is the top restaurant. We were in Santa Cruz for a family reunion. Since I don't get good Asian food in Florida, I was determined to find it here. My husband likes Chinese food and it had great reviews so I figured why not. We came with our two kids (3 and 6) and my dad at around 6 p.m. on a Sunday. Even though it looked pretty empty, there are tons of people getting take out. The food was absolutely delicious. We got a Beef Chow Fun, Chicken and Broccoli, Duck and Salt and Pepper Tofu. I usually find chicken a little more dry at restaurants, but this one was so tender. The beef was also extremely tender. I loved the Salt and Pepper Tofu, it was so crispy and perfectly seasoned. Usually fried food doesn't taste good the next day, but the seasoning made this one still delicious. My husband says I nod when I eat good food and I was a bobblehead here. I'm guessing that our servers are also the owners and they were so sweet. They asked about where we were visiting from. If I lived here this would be our go to spot. There's parking in the back and tons of it. I would highly recommend this place. While visiting back home looked for a place where my girls and I could eat. We found Golden Fu Wah on Yelp and thought to give it a try. This is an example of do not judge a place by first glance or being the only people there. Ambiance was dated and simple but the table seating was comfy. Service was sweet and kind and made sure we were happy the whole time. We looked at the menu and just couldn't decide so we decide to try a bunch off the appetizer menu and the general Tso's chicken, and nothing disappointed us. Finally, a good Chinese restaurant. We were there for a friday dinner date. Very old and charming restaurant and cozy too. There is plenty of public parking in the back. We had ordered hot and sour soup, spring rolls, and chow fun. Finally, hot sour soup which has sour in it and also for spice they are using green chili, so it taste different from other Chinese restaurants and we loved it. Spring rolls were made with fresh vegetables and disappeared fast, even before I could take a snap Chow fun, we had asked to make it spicy, perfectly made and again the vegetables were fresh . In short, it was Juicy, saucy, and not greasy! The service was great, too. It was a busy time, so little wait but otherwise I am happy I found a good Chinese restaurant finally. The Szechuan string beans were outstanding and the sushi was okay, but stay away from the beef. Surely they could use better cuts than whatever cut this was: the teriyaki beef was very tough. They did give use a very generous portions, though, so, on balance, it was passable. The building urgently needs repair or renovation because the ceiling tiles are ready to collapse, the walls have seen some rough wear, and, well, you get the picture. We've eaten here twice (once in restaurant and once take out) and appreciate the friendly service and good pricing. I wouldn't say this is my favorite Chinese place in the area but it's one of the closest. Faves: walnut shrimp , beef with broccoli, kung pau chicken. I would come back to order the walnut shrimp alone. So this is now my go-to comfort meal! I absolutely love love love their hot & sour soup. Whenever I'm feeling sad or could just use a pick me up, my bf gets me hot & sour soup from here. It's a bit like magic because it does brighten me up and make me feel safe and comforted quite a bit. Plus Jen, is super friendly and welcoming whenever my bf and/or I are there! The touch of friendliness by her makes me want to support this business over and over again. The hot & sour soup is really delicious. Like I think they must put chili peppers in it with how delicious and spicy it tastes. But even if they don't, it's just a really flavorful soup, full of tofu and egg and with the right type of yummy Chinese mushrooms. Just delicious. It's def the best hot & sour soup in Santa Cruz, and honestly, since I've been in California. I also like ordering the bbq pork buns - again so yummy. Also, recently discovered a new favorite, the crispy wontons that come with sweet & sour sauce. Both just really yummy and comforting paired with the hot & sour soup. I will say I tried the Combination plate A once, and I was not a fan (the noodles were a bit oily and the meat a bit flavorless). First of all, this place is cute, with hanging planters, nice windows, and cozy tables. The service was fabulous with the most kind and gracious server - my daughter even said she wished she could give her $100 because she was so kind! We ordered pot stickers and the #2 family meal (soup, egg rolls, fried shrimp, fried rice, chicken chow neon, schezuan chicken, and sweet and sour pork) along with some tea and hot sake. All in all the tab was $55 which is so reasonable for a family of 4! Everything was fresh and delicious, with a good balance of flavor. Came here with a couple friends and we had an amazing time! The combo platter came with six nigiri and a roll, and the chef was kind enough to drop in an extra nigiri for us! The bomb roll and the chef's choice were really something different that we hadn't tried before, but I am glad the chef recommended them. Thankful that the sushi chef was patient with us as we took awhile to order. We also had the rainbow roll, which was really great as well! The service at golden fu wah is top tier. Jenny made us feel like family right away and went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. She still does. It doesn't matter how many times I come in she still checks to make sure that I'm satisfied and love the food. Which is very vibrant and fresh on the veggie side, and hot and savory in the realm of the noodles and tofu. My go to is veggie chow fun with tofu. And somehow each successive time I've ordered it it has managed to be better. The value is beyond anything you'll see in Santa Cruz as far as bang for your buck. The exterior of the restaurant from the back may look plain and simple, but do venture inside and make your way toward the front of the restaurant where the booths are located. Peruse the menu, try ordering a soup, and then order a few main dishes from the menu for an authentic Chinese meal. The waitress is friendly, gracious, and helpful. She knows our family well. At Golden Fu Wah, you have a good choice of many types of Chinese dishes here, whether beef, pork, fish, chicken, or vegetarian, and they are very good. The portions served are very good, and the taste is excellent! I recommend that everyone, families and friends, all go to try out this restaurant for a wonderful authentic meal. This is our go - to spot for chinese food in town. Pretty good, clean tasting food. Recently they have had some menu revamp and new stuff has been amazing. The bbq pork Buns (bao) were excellent. The Good: - solid amount of choices for vegetarian and meat lovers alike - beef chow mein: super meaty and garlicky and not oily! -General chicken the meat to breading ratio was perfect, more protein than bread and the sauce has a little kick -shrimp schezuan similarly they had amazing breading ratio and the sauce was slightly tangy - Clean bathroom/dinning area The bad: - even though it didn't seem very full the wait was pretty long. It seems like they really only have 2 people working. 1 as a cook 1 as a server.
