Canton was historically the cleanest, and arguably best, Chinese in SC County. The food and service at lunch is now arguably amongst the worst in SC County. Walnut prawns were overcooked breaded prawn w/ a small amount of mayo squeezed on. Jasmin rice was dried out. Hot and sour soup was flavorless. The food was not really edible. All food and drinks were served on the opposite / unused side of our table, which was bizarre and appeared intentionally aggressive. We asked for soda water three times but it was not brought. There were only a few tables eating, but staff seemed overwhelmed. Staff seemed to resent having customers. The overall service experience was night and day relative to our past experiences at Canton. Two stars for the location and design. read more

It took moving to several different states and major cities for me to appreciate how AMAZING Canton is. The freshness and quality of ingredients is incredible! Had dinner last night- kung POW chicken and sweet and sour pork. Appetizer were pork pot stickers- mushy inside but good- the kung pow chicken was great but it's a little bit bland there's something missing like maybe they could add another vegetable. All in all fair... nothing spectacular- oh yeah somebody lit up a cigarette in the restaurant and I wasn't having any of it- I asked the waitress and she just said maybe it's coming from outside but there was a table of people close by and somebody lit up- it was disgusting! And the leave the back door open so me and my friend were freezing during the whole meal. When they first opened up many years ago they had the greatest beef dishes but I think over time they have changed hands- everything is pretty mediocre. read more

WOW. After a long exhausting day, ordered dinner from Golden City on Mission Street on the West Side , under new ownership by the folks who run Canton in Scotts Valley and on 41st. Avenue. Wow WOW WOW. Picked up our order, rushed it home, and enjoyed thoroughly. Our choices: opened with the Sample Platter (Two egg rolls, Two fried prawns, Four cream cheese wontons w/ FAB dressed garden salad). - GREAT starter. Then War Wonton Soup - silky, flavorful, and LOADED with all the good stuff. Fussy Hubby very critical of his WorWonTon - he sang its praises. Then Canton Special Chow Fun - again, loaded with tons of protein elements along with perfect noodles and veg. And finally, Salt and Pepper Prawns - breaded and deep fried, with veggies and a little kick. It was all super great - each dish had its own flavor profile (some Chinese restaurants make it all taste the same) and everything was fresh and plentiful. This place is FANTASTIC. I placed a to go order over the phone because I work in the vicinity. The lady on the phone told me 5-10 minutes. She was not kidding. I arrived within the timeframe (I work relatively close) and it was just being finished boxed up. For food I ordered the ginger beef with won ton crisps. It was perfect! The beef was not over powered, the rice was amazing - comes with the lunch special. This is such a white-chinese restaurant. I don't understand why people would give it four or five stars. First of all, the lady is really rude and doesn't even smile while she seats us or takes our orders. She made it seem like she was so unhappy to serve us. She was also very unattentive and was never around when we needed anything. But that's whatever. So we ordered the family dinner #3 which came with hot and sour soup, spring rolls, fried shrimp, fried rice, sweet&sour chicken, mongolian beef, and this chicken veggie dish. I'd have to say, the portions were pretty big for $15 per person and that's five individual dishes plus appetizers for only $15. However, the food was very mediocre. The hot and sour soup wasn't sour enough nor spicy and all the dishes were somewhat bland. The sweet and sour chicken was just fried chicken with sweet and sour sauce poured over it. To me, it was just a chinese restaurant used to trick white or other ethnicity people. I would never go back to eat there. If I ever eat chinese food in the Santa Cruz area, I'm going to go to Shun Feng or Tams. Never here again. read more

This place. Oh man. Where do I start? Look, the food is ok. Nothing to write home about. The biggest issue I have with this place is their lack of consistency. Aside from the fact that they have a new server, seems like every week, and the fact that everyone there seems to hate their job, I never know what I am going to get in any dish I order. Forget the menu! That is only a guideline as to the basic feel of the dish. I started eating here with my boyfriend. Their isn't much to order past 8pm in capitola to-go that is decently priced and tasty which is another issue entirely. And the reviews for other chinese food type places seemed worse than this. So we started coming here. Every time I ordered something on the menu, I would get it different than what it clearly states on the menu. For example if it says a dish comes with certain vegetables, I would get it with completely different vegetables. I have tried asking for the dish to only contain certain veggies. I have tried asking for certain ones to be left out. But each time , it's a full on crap shoot about what I will get in my dish. Never or rarely what I have asked for. read more

Since my days in the midwest, I've tried to get good fried rice at any chinese restaurant. Found it here. Perfectly to my taste. Sometimes I add some soy sauce, others I have it straight. Add some chowmein and it's as good as being in a movie where some where chinese food is ordered, doesn't it make you crave it?.
