The chips and salsa here are actually great-mixture of sweet and salty chips (some sweet potato chips I think?) and the salsa has a nice depth to it. This place never disappoints snd yesterday was even better. We had the best waiter, Taj! His welcoming smile was a perfect start to a wonderful lunch. He was very personable and attentive. And, very patient with my hard of hearing mother! Wasn't going to have drinks but ended up with their top shelf margarita and big enough to share. It was wonderful! Loved Canyon Cafe when I had been pre covid and was happy to return and see all the changes they have in place to keep everyone safe! Hand sanitizer stations, distanced tables, a list with guests and contact info to let anyone know if an exposure happens, and all workers wearing masks properly. Their chips and salsa are always fresh and love that they are complimentary. We also got the queso which was delicious. I got the Baja Shrimp tacos and they were amazing!! The one downside to St. Louis' vibrant and exciting food scene is that you tend to forget the ones that have been around for years. Tucked in a corner of Plaza Frontenac, it's easy for Canyon Cafe to drift into the back of your mind, where you dream of frosty margaritas and warm chips and salsa. Tonight, I am continuing to work my way through St. Louis Magazine's best soups (and when it's only a few degrees above polar, can you blame me?) and settled on a sure thing: Canyon Cafe's Chicken Poblano Chowder. As the name implies, it's a creamy take on a chicken soup, kicked up with roasted poblanos and it's sublime. Velvety with a slight kick at the finish, the flavor teases something out of an old standard that is unexpected but definitely to be appreciated. As I read through the menu, I planned my next few visits for tacos and a black and blue quesadilla and I probably would have ordered a quesadilla for tonight, except I'm not hungry enough to do it justice. So that will be for another night. PRO TIP: If you're wanting take out, you have to either order online or sit and wait at the bar as was explained to me when I tried to call because the online ordering system was not working. The clientele had that upbeat enthusiasm that I associate with this portion of West County. If you are feeling the blues, just have a meal at this place. You WILL feel better, as the Frontenac "we can do anything" optimism is highly contagious. I was so hungry and really looking for anything close. I was in Plaza Frontenac shopping and found Canyon Cafe. No wait and was able to sit quickly. Service was quick and the specials looked yummy but opted for something else. I ordered the Queso dip and street tacos. I went with Carnitas, Shrimp and Bison. Ok...I ventured off...with my mask, and went back to Canyon Cafe to eat on the patio. I have been here a lot of times but I have always ordered the same thing. This time I decided to be adventurous and get the PANCHO'S ENCHILADAS PLATTER which was the best choice of the night! We rolled in after church on Sunday and we're seated right away. The chips are multi colored with a few sweet potato chips mixed in for variety. The salsa we were told takes two days to make, it's of a Smokey chipotle flavor and has a nice consistency. You won't find typical Tex-Mex options but the fare is boutique Mexican and unique. I had street tacos (Al Pastor, Shrimp, Bison) my lady enjoyed the stuffed chicken breast. It was all good and we decided we'd return after a few bites. I joined some girlfriends here Friday evening for margaritas and dinner. I made it just in time before happy hour was over, we had no problems. I could tell they were short staffed for the evening, however, our server, Michaela was very accommodating and kept our water glasses filled the entire time! Most of us had the street taco platter, which consisted of (3) tacos; shrimp, chicken and pulled pork which was mouth watering and delicious. The WORST service one can experience. Our waters weren't filled and the chips were end of barrel - all crushed and tiny. The manager took the chips when we mentioned it but didn't bring any back. Every single employee from the waiters to the manager wore their mask either under their nose or under their chin. I get the manager was new, but he didn't even know who was helping our table (only 10 table even full). Chicken enchiladas were primarily cheese. Tables dirty all over despite employees leaning against counters and talking to each other. When we mentioned a bit of our experience to the manager, he said the bottom of the bag crushed chips were the "best part" and then said "thanks, this is going to be a tough place to work." A few weeks ago my friend and I went to Canyon Cafe for lunch. When we arrived, the hostess said that the wait would be 1/2 hour because they were short staffed. I made a negative political comment to my friend. The 16 year old receptionist overheard it and stated it was an inappropriate remark and starting crying. She went to her manager who immediately consulted her boss, the restaurant manager. The restaurant manager asked us to wait. After consulting her boss she then chastised us for making a 16 year old hostess cry and asked us to leave the premises without serving us. We apologized profusely if she felt we had hurt her feelings. We are 80+ year old women. We were not disruptive nor rude. The hostess simply eavesdropped on a personal conversation. We apologized profusely to the hostess and the manager and we were so sorry that she overheard the remark. We were scorned and embarrassed; therefore, we left the premises. My friend and I will avoid eating and/or recommending Canyon Cafe. I considered writing a letter to management; but, once again I was concerned that it would be misconstrued. It was an innocent remark and the 16 year old hostess dramatically negatively reacted. It was a most unfortunate event for all involved. read more

Canyon Cafe is one of our favorites- we went for a dinner out before Valentine's Day. We did have to wait a few minutes, but they took our number and texted us when our table was ready. The tables were spread out and even they weren't filling all tables. I was pleased how spaced out we were. The waiter was wearing gloves and most of the staff were also. The chips and salsa arrived promptly like usual and they tasted fresh and hard to stop! I ordered the canyon margarita- my favorite! We also ordered the queso and a cup of guacamole. We both ordered pancho's enchiladas and they tasted fresh and absolutely delicious. I always love the small salad and those were a little larger than normal, but loved it! Favorite thing here is probably the chips, salsa and guacamole. I don't know what it is about the chips at canyon cafe but they are super good and their salsa is the perfect mixture between spicy and mild. Also they make their guacamole in front of you at the table so you can pick what stuff you want to go in it. I also got the carnitas platter to eat. This wasn't as good as I was hoping but still good. The meat had a lot of fat on it and was not really pulled apart so it was really big chunks that I had to pull a lot of it apart. Our server was amazing super nice came by a lot! Also at the end of your meal they give you white chocolate in tamales which is amazing. We decided to have dinner here since we were going to a function across the street. Canyon Cafe is located in Plaza Frontenac. You can reach it from the mall area or outdoors from the parking lot. This place fills up quickly. There is a good size bar, but that was full when we walked in. Chips and salsa were brought to our table and we munched on these while making our decision on food. Their salsa is wonderful as are their chips. He chose the combo enchilada platter and I went with the black and blue quesadilla. His came with beans, rice and tossed greens. One enchilada with cream sauce and the other with salsa verde. He liked the cream sauce but not the verde. My quesadilla was okay. It was steak with red onion marmalade and margarita slaw. The slaw was very good. My quesadilla was okay but it had more onion marmalade than steak. We did order sopapilla for dessert. That was wonderful and enough for two people to share. Rude Manager and front desk staff. Stopped for lunch at 1 pm. Server seemed young but very pleasant. 30 minutes into the meal our server disappeared. My wife ket trying to wave and catch another server attention but finally left to shop leaving me there. My folks love coming to canyon cafe, every time I've been there the service has been pretty good, but today, not so much. Went there with my girlfriend, we arrived at 8pm (they close at 9), the hostess sat us down right away. We literally sat there for 24 minutes, no water, no chips, we could see waiters coming and going, but still no service. At the 25 minute mark, we just about ready to leave, instead I go ask the hostess if we can get some service, her response "my bad"..... Even after talking to the hostess, it was about 10 minutes later that a gentleman came and offered us waters. We asked for our food, to go boxes, and our check. I've never had to do this. Pretty sure the waiters were avoiding us, either cause we looked young or they were expecting us to leave. Food came right around 8:50pm, the entire restaurant was empty, all the waiters were watching us like hawks, we wouldn't be eating 10 minutes before you closed if you just had came to our table as soon as we sat down!! Food is always a 10/10. But get your staff working better! Everyone looks like they're in a psych ward, walking around aimlessly, no one smiles, I tried waving people down but they were just looking at the ground.
