We stopped by today to pick up cheesesteaks from Cap's. This restaurant is takeout only. When we walked inside I saw Miss T and she was smiling. I have told you these are the BEST CHEESESTEAKS in Alabama. I have tried several here in Alabama and Cap's is the BEST. We paid and went outside. Miss T delivered our food quickly. It was great to see her looking so well. Dave ordered two steak philly cheesesteaks. I decided to try a chicken philly. Actually a chicken bacon ranch philly cheesesteak. We got an order of fries too! The steak philly cheesesteaks with provolone are delicious and very satisfying. The soft bread from up north is a wonderful contrast paired with the delicious steak and onions. Absolutely the best! 5/5 The fries were seasoned well. Finally got my chance to try Cap's about two weeks ago. I love a Philly cheesesteak and I was super excited to taste what many in Huntsville say is the city's best. All in all, I was satisfied with my experience. This restaurant has historically inhabited gas stations. It recently moved from the Mountain Gap area to South Parkway. At its current location, there is no space to sit and dine, so it is take out only. I came by with a couple of coworkers to grab lunch. For future visits, I would recommend ordering ahead, as food is made fresh to order and can take some time to prepare. We decided we were willing to wait. We ordered from the owner himself and browsed the gas station's wares. You can buy sodas and other drinks from the gas station; specialty drinks like lemonade are available through Cap's if they are desired. One of my coworkers and I both got the "Crazy J," both with steak rather than chicken. This sandwich comes with provolone, bell peppers, onions, and optional mayo. My other coworker got the Cap's cheesesteak, which is just meat, onions, and optional mayo. We got two small orders of fries to share. The owner was very polite and patient with our questions and waffling on what to get. Our food took about 15 minutes to prepare and was packaged very neatly for us to take it back to the office. One might think the prices are a bit high but you'll be reassessing that thought when you see the size of the sandwich. One sandwich could easily make two hearty meals and we had leftovers for a couple of days. Everyone liked their cheesesteaks, especially the Crazy J. The sandwiches were piled high with tender steak. The bread was a little bit soggy on the edges after our drive but not intolerably so. The provolone was mixed nicely with the meat, though I wouldn't have said no to a little more cheese. I also think I would've liked a few more bell peppers or, even better, maybe some jalapeños. I'm nit picking here at this point, but I also honestly could've gone for my sandwich to be a bit saltier, which surprised me. Cheesesteaks are often salt bombs, but this one could've used a teeeeeny kick in the pants for it to be a contender for the very best in the city - just my opinion, though! It was ultimately quite tasty and extremely filling. The fries were seasoned well and fluffy on the inside. I especially enjoyed the homemade ranch to dip them in. The ranch was so good it has me considering a chicken bacon ranch for my next visit. This is definitely a business worthy of a revisit or a try if you haven't been yet. My criticisms are ultimately quite minor and probably wouldn't even be terribly relevant except I'm stacking it up against my MOST favorite cheesesteaks ever. Cap's Cheesesteaks in Huntsville is a hidden gem. Located off Mountain Gap Road SE, it is definitely worth a try. I got the Buffalo Byrd Cheesesteak, and it was juicy and flavorful. The Wiz Fries, which are crinkle-cut fries topped with cheese sauce, were a great addition to the meal. They were cheesy and salty, but not overly salty. The homemade lemonade was also a nice, refreshing drink to wash everything down. Highly recommend giving Cap's a try. Important note: Cap's is moving to a new location. Incredibly underwhelming. My boyfriend went to grab me a chicken philly from here for lunch a few days ago. Took them over an hour to make 1 sandwich so they gave it to him for free. Once I received the sandwich, the meat was so incredibly sour and rank. I immediately disposed of it so as not to get sick. Well, I did it. I finally made it to Cap's Philly Cheesesteak. It's not easy find. There are two locations, and the 9th Avenue location is located in the back of a repurposed school building, which has been converted into offices. You enter the front of the old school parking lot, drive around back, and continue to the far corner. You see some parked food trucks and signs for several food trucks and restaurants. Maybe they share a common central commercial kitchen? You walk up a few steps to two big doors. One door has a small window, where you place your order. It feels like a hidden speakeasy where you need to give the special password for the order window to open. I guessed the password was cheesesteak, and I was granted my wish to order. A nice man, who I believe was the owner, took my order. As a novice, I asked for advice on cheese, and he said definitely provolone. There was a little wait, but the owner kept me posted that the order was being prepared. He brought my order out like a proud father carrying a newborn baby. He states that I must try it before I leave to give immediate feedback. I said sure, and sat down at the lone 4-seat metal table. As I unwrapped the baby, I mean sandwich, I could tell this was going to be good. First, the sandwich is large. Second, the bread, similar to French bread or a hoagie, was so soft and tender, just soaking up the meat juices and melted cheese. Third, speaking of cheese, a large amount of provolone cheese was infused throughout the sandwich, making it all gooey and pretty. Fourth, the meat was hot and chopped/shredded, and they didn't skimp on the portion size. The only recommendation is to add a little more seasoning, but this is a minor critique. The feedback? Well, the sandwich was absolutely fabulous. Overall, navigating the corn maze to get there and then completing the speakeasy challenge provides a unique atmosphere, and the fantastic sandwiches will keep you coming back. Ordered my food at the window. He said it would take 10-12 minutes. Totally fine with that, it would be a red flag if it was instantly ready. Go to my car to wait. AMAZING! Made-to-order Philly cheesesteaks that are fan-fricken-tastic! First, you might think you need to be in a different location as there is little signage for Cap's, but if you're at a gas station on Mountain Gap Rd right by Aldridge Creek, you're there. It's inside the gas station with a little window to the back right. We had the most pleasant woman take our order today. She was all smiles and happy to help us get our order made. We got 2 Caps Phillies and a Crazy J with tea and fries. The tea was a mix of tea and lemonade and it was great too! Meanwhile, the cooks are back there turning out the best damn cheesesteaks I've had in a while. They are really tasty. I've been to Philly and had a few there, but these were better than anything I had on that trip. Fresh, hot, and melty with fries cooked perfectly. Cap's is on my list of must-go when I'm up in Huntsville. The bread was the best part, but the steak is over seasoned with pepper... and had no flavor at all... it's basically grease..and pepper... all cooked on an electric grill.it's location is questionable as well.
