I came here for lunch to see if it was as good as I remembered as a kid. It had been nearly 30 years since I had ate here because it was favorite of my Dads. I hate to say it, but the answer was no. The food was good because I got it to go, but the restaurant itself needs some updating. The first thing I noticed seemed to be the smell of grease and it was thick to the point it lingered on my clothes the rest of the day. The service was terrific! I ordered the steak and cheese and an order of fries. It didn't take too long for my order to be made. Maybe 10 minutes or so. I would like to give them another try, but hopefully they will get a better ventilation system in place. read more

The food is what you expect a sandwich. Don't expect good service. The lady threw the sandwich into my arms and did not confirm the order. Then asked what she did wrong. I loved my sandwich today at lunch. No frills, old school, hole in the wall type of place. I have found me a new lunch spot while in town working. I love a good sandwich and it all starts with the bread...!!! The bread here is homemade and on point as far as I'm concerned. I got the Kitchen Sink and it was fabulous. #vegetarian. I recently visited Stanlieo's Sub Villa for the second time--my first visit was about 10 years ago. This time, I ordered the Vegetarian Combo Sandwich to go, which includes veggie turkey, corned beef, wham, and chicken. I was genuinely looking forward to it, especially after hearing so many rave reviews over the years from folks in Huntsville and Oakwood University alumni. Unfortunately, my experience was a major letdown. When I got home to Atlanta and unwrapped the sandwich, I was shocked. The bread was torn and falling apart, and there were no condiments included--none on the sandwich and none in the bag. No one asked if I wanted any, and I had no idea I needed to request them. The only addition was a small portion cup of diced tomatoes and diced pickles... which did very little to help the situation. To make matters worse, the sandwich cost $21.26 for two--and honestly, I've had far better subs for much less. Given the price and all the hype, I expected something that at least held together and had some flavor. I know Stanlieo's has a strong reputation in the Huntsville community, but based on this experience, I just don't get the hype. Sadly, this was one of the worst sub sandwiches I've ever purchased. Come on, Stanlieo's--people are rooting for you. But at these prices, customers deserve quality and attention to detail. Until then, you all might be better off just heading to Subway. To be fair, the ambience is fine. The place has been around for a while, and it carries a retro charm that likely appeals to those with fond memories of visiting over the years. It still looks much like it probably did when it first opened, and I imagine that sense of nostalgia is part of its lasting appeal. But for me, nostalgia just wasn't enough to make up for the lackluster food quality. read more

I wavered on a 3 or 4 star ranking here, but settled on a 4 because I truly think that I just ordered the wrong thing for me. I'll be back to try something more to my liking and will update accordingly! That being said, I came by on Monday to grab some lunch. I saw a lot of reviewers saying they didn't think this place seemed clean, and let me just say that wasn't my impression at all. It's definitely kind of a hole in the wall, and older, but that's NOT the same thing as dirty. The tables were wiped down, the counter free of grime and clutter, menus weren't sticky, drink machines looked fine to me. So that's good! The restaurant has an almost sort of a retro feel to it, with an arcade game and lots of sports team paraphernalia. The staff was friendly and was working hard - a large crowd came in right after me and they worked diligently to get all our orders filled. I had heard so many good things about the Kitchen Sink that I sort of felt like I had to try it. I got mine without ham and onions. I also ordered a side of fried mushrooms because they're one of my favorite things. :) So here is my problem: I tend to not like hot subs, and I also tend to not like subs with a ton of different toppings (I'm usually a 1meat+1cheese purist). Kitchen sink is definitely not that. I personally didn't love it, but I didn't hate it, either! The bread had a really nice texture to it and the cheese was nice and melty. As you can probably imagine, I will stay in my lane next time and go with something that's more in line with my preferences. That being said, those fried mushrooms were BOMB. Perfect serving size for a nice snack, delicious ranch dipping sauce, flavorful, crispy breading, and the mushrooms were the perfect size and shape. I'll definitely be grabbing these again, even if I can't find a sandwich that's to my liking. Stanlieo's is definitely a Huntsville institution. I look forward to returning to try more. read more

the Italian was tasty. But not a lot of meat and you have to pay extra to get a good amount on there to make it a sandwich.

Sandwiches were solid. This place was dirty though. The inside needs to be cleaned and updated, but I would be fine with clean. Employees sitting when no orders. We went today between appointments at Huntsville Hospital and the Medical Mall. We arrived at noon. As soon as we walked in we were greeted like friends. The lady at the counter was so nice and the gentleman that was with her was so helpful and nice too. We split a hot kitchen sink and decided we could have each eaten a whole one. It was so good. I used to love subs from Stanlieo's, but the last two times they have made my order wrong. The last time I ordered in person and just got my money back but today I am working from home and ordered online. I had someone pick the order up, so they didn't check it. I ordered a turkey sub and got ham. I do not eat pork, so I called to complain. The guy on the phone insisted I had turkey. I explained that I had, in fact, eaten turkey before and this was NOT turkey. The guy was rude, no apology. He did tell me I could bring it back, but I am working and not able to drive back. First time and the last time. My overarching comment is to clean the place. The vents in the dining area are gross. When was the last time they were cleaned? French fries undercooked for sure, needed another minute. However, the onion rings were pretty good. That would be the one positive. We ordered two pepper steak combo sandwiches. Not sure there was any onion on it, as advertised. Meat was tough, for what meat there was. The sandwich pickles and tomatoes. There was literally no flavor to speak of. Did I say this is the first and last time I'll go there? Also I read previous reviews. Numerous people years ago said to clean the place. You've somehow survived as a business. I wanted to make sure I left this place with a review that fits the experience. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I can't fit enough compliments into the post to do Stanlieo's justice . Went here after it was recommended by a co-worker. And hands down , this was top 3 cheesesteak I've had in my life . The bread was soft but held the ingredients perfectly . I'll definitely address the owner's reply to my reviews here. I have visited both locations multiple times to give fair and honest reviews for us foodies & others. The place inside-it isn't clean and that's apparent in all photos I took. The proof isn't with an argument. It's dirty, just clean it up. The employees eating- they STILL SHAMELESSLY eat in front of customers on the line WITH their bare hands. That is unsanitary to say the least. Then have the audacity to say, "we out of that," right, because you're eating it all. I wanted a raw salad!! And watched two ladies eating away vegetables and tell the cashier that they couldn't fulfill my order which is my next point... I CANNOT GET AN ORDER BECAUSE YOURE ALWAYS OUT OF EVERYTHING BY 11AM!! What on earth is that about? It's a salad, not a Gulf lobster. STOCK UP PROPERLY or STREAMLINE THE MENU!! Permanently. I tried to get a salad for 5 DAYS IN A ROW, Constance. Enough of the excuses. Vegetarian Options- JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE LISTED ON THE MENU DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE AVAILABLE-.... They're NOT! Like every visit I wanted to try the "wham" and the vegan Turkey option but it's never, ever available. Not even the day I brought my buddy and was embarrassed to again, not be able to order the sandwiches. She's a vegan. This needs to be fixed. Fried Black Tomatoes- I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THEM BEING UNAVAILABLE--no, they are available BUT they are absolutely horrible! I am a southern connoisseur of the very dish, and at Stanlieo's, they're primarily breading.... Very very heavy, greasy breading (thicker than my momma's thigh type). They're always burnt as well. I opened two of mine & they had no tomato in them.. just breading. The second order I tried at the Jordan lane location, the lady frying them, fried herself a batch, sat in the dining room, watched tv & ate. What??!!? Look, I provided photos of my review so please take a real look. The Governor's location is filthy inside, I mean the pick up windows is covered in dust, boxes and some thick crud ew... idk what it is. It's dusty as heck as well on the inside. The employees taking the order are sweet but most of the menu doesn't exist at all. It's very LIMITED. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE IT- JUST REMOVE IT FROM THE MENU!! If you run out of everything by 10am as you have every time I visit (6 total visits), find a better way to notify customers Instead of us arriving and finding out after driving for over 15 minutes to get to either location. Also, hiring an inventory e sort to assist you in the upkeep of INVENTORY and stock up all of the most popular items as do all other successful restaurants. It's not that hard. Last time I visited, every time I asked for an item, the cashier would say, "sorry, WE DON'T HAVE THAT," and that's not ok. I left hungry and with nothing. Here's a list of what they didn't have: Cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, wham, Turkey, cheese, and tomatoes. REALLY?? That would disappoint anyone. Standards are poor here & that needs to change. I'm not recommending anyone waste their time or money at these establishments until they've made the improvements. As far as the responses to only positive reviews. I stated that I noticed great wonderful & nice reviews to those who are only positive. For us who mention the many negatives, your response to reviews is exactly the same. None of us have seen you take any of our suggestions nor make any changes, it's just that simple. After all, how can we visit a restaurant that doesn't have enough food to serve... like ever?? read more

I've been coming here on occasion since 1989, when I moved here. I'm originally from Boston and these are reminiscent of subs from there. First, they changed the type of pickles they used a while back. They used to be dill, now they're something different but not as good. The rolls are different too, hard and stale, like an old grocery store roll. At one time, they were soft and squishy. Now, it's inedible. We do know when changes from the original are made.
