I will start by saying that I was very scared to go to a salon, because so many hair stylists pretty much ruined my hair with bad techniques and cheap materials. I was assigned to Tasha, and I LOVED her, she was sooooo patient, and she kept explaining to me every step of the process. After 3 hours I was more than amazed of the result! This review is for Shai, Sophia, and Sonia. My daughter and I went to the salon today and I was pleasantly surprised. My daughter is 6 and has enough energy to power LA. Sophia was patient and kind to her the entire time. She never tired of her questions and watched all her videos. She took the time to cut her hair curl by curl and finger detangle. My daughter is EXTREMELY tender headed to the point were it is almost unbearable for me to do it. She was extremely personable and kind taking the time to educate me about my daughters hair and what routine would work best for her. She even listened to my daughter's wants for her hairstyles. My haircut was with Shai. He actually took the time to listen to my concerns and answered all of my questions, no matter how random. He was patient and a great conversationalist. He took his time sectioning out each curl, which was a feat within its self because my hair was ridiculously frizzy, and cut each one individually. He gave me advice on what to do to help with moisture and split end prevention. Sonia washed and styled my hair. She took her time and set the water temperature perfectly(which is a huge deal to me, I hate cold). She was charismatic and funny as well. She made me laugh as she finger detangled my hair. I got my haircut with Shai a bit over a year ago now. I'm leaving this review now because I found a new stylist and they made me feel super comfortable. I had the opposite experience with Shai. I went because he was "The Curl Doctor." Celebrity stylist and all that. I had never had a curly cut since I had transitioned from straight 4 years prior. I was really scared to cut my hair. I didn't know anything. I needed real help. First, you have to prep your hair before going. You have to wash, dry, detangle, and use no product, which is super inconvenient if you have a life and a job. My new stylist did not require this step and my haircut was much better. They made me feel super comfortable and shared knowledge. And they and their assistants have curly hair. When I went to Shai, I was scared. I'm very shy. He didn't make me feel comfortable at all and was really short with me. I barely got a haircut. He barely looked at me. I even tried to make conversation and I'm really shy. It was so awkward. His assistant, who had straight hair, answered all my questions. She basically did every single thing after the cut. He didn't really touch my hair much. The cost was $360 for him to barely look at me, give me no reassurance. He barely cut my hair because he didn't really talk to me and make me feel comfortable to ask for more. He seemed like he was in a bad mood and passed me off to assistants as soon as he could. When I was leaving, a little girl arrived for a cut. Suddenly Shai was smiling and talkative. Recently I got my haircut with Tasha for the first time in over 18 months. My curls were pandemic crazy. I secured an appointment and was excited to finally have a hair reset. I arrived on time to find that 5 minutes before I arrived, a pipe had burst on the street and water was shut off for the entire block. Carmen was super receptive to what I wanted and delivered! I asked her to frame my face and to help add volume. She explained what she was doing for each step, especially in the styling, and made styling and product recommendations based on my curl type and texture. I left feeling and looking brand new! The price was high ($150 + tip), but I expected it going in. They offered a free consultation beforehand, but I opted out of it. As a first time customer, they ask for a deposit. After stumbling upon this salon on instagram I thought I would give it try since I missed my curly hair. This was the best decision that I ever made! I was born with curly hair but of course I would straighten my hair often and because of this I lost my beautiful curls. I first came to the salon in 2014 and I did the "big chop". Cici was and still is my awesome stylist. She encouraged me to embrace my curly hair and provided me with all the tools and advice. It's because of her I now proudly rock my curls. Just like everything else, it took lots of patience, time and effort to get my curls back. I would get my deva cuts every so often but I had to do the work in between. In 2016, I sadly decided to straighten my hair one time and it set me back, but again thanks to CiCi she was able to help me. I highly recommend this salon to anyone especially all my curly girls! A deva cut is a little expensive but in my opinion I believe it's worth it. I'm currently still in my curly hair journey but I think I'm headed in the right direction :) FYI There is also a parking lot located in the back of salon but spaces are a bit tight. read more

I came in for a Deva curly cut with Marlee and organic color with Jody. Everything was AMAZING (except the parking) it's free, but very small, narrow and crowded. Tough to maneuver... However I absolutely recommend this salon. I was going to Devachan in Culver City until they closed down so I had to find a new salon. Marlee assisted directly under the owner Shai and is VERY talented. Both ladies took their time to really listen to what it was that I WANTED. Marlee took her time time cutting each curl and as I saw parts I wanted altered she went back in until I was completely satisfied. Very friendly and inviting, she even went and bought me some coffee bean while I sat in color. Jody as well took the time to really discuss color with me. I had an idea of what I wanted but not sure how to achieve it. I wanted highlights without the damage of bleach. She spent 20+ mins really making me comfortable and discussing the pros and cons of all options. We ended up doing an ammonia free, no damage organic bleach for highlights just at my roots to blend into the copper/blondish color I had going already. Achieved the PERFECT color, over all I am SO in love with my hair and the overall experience was worth EVERY PENNY. I spent $150 on cut and $150 on highlights, so be prepared but it's worth it!!! Let me just say, it's also on my part because I didn't get it rectified when I noticed my hair wasn't fully trimmed of my dead ends but that was the most important factor I wanted done when getting my hair cut. I'm disappointed to write this review of Capella Salon. I went in to have a cut and full color for my already shorter hair style. I had been informed before I came that a haircut or even a trim were both starting at $200. I was hoping for a new shape to my cut so I agreed. I was also looking to lighten my overall color and brought in photos to help the stylist figure out a strategy to achieve the desired outcome. I understand that color changes take time so was fully prepared for a process schedule upon consulatation. My gray roots had grown out about an inch when I went in for my appointment. The stylist assigned to me was very sweet and fun however I feel she lacked the confidence of a more experienced stylist. She proceeded to wash and condition my hair then trimmed about 1/2 inch off of my existing cut. She did not change anything about my shape except to volumize my natural curl. I was then told that because I had red tones in my hair (I was planning to move away from the red and go into a more neutral medium brown) I would need a full color correction treatment. I had booked an appointment that provided enough time to have full color work done but because my stylist was not confident with color correction or even providing an interim strategy for future processing I wound up leaving the salon much as I had come in with my gray root still showing, basically paying $200 for a 1/2" trim. No color at all. I was expecting just a bit more than that and was even prepared to pay for more! My stylist iterated on several occasions how she was cutting every curl individually but honestly, she did nothing different from my previous stylist who had dry cut my hair in a more traditional manner. Salon experiences usually make you feel good about yourself. I felt the opposite when I left. Capella just lost a potential customer. I won't be returning there again. read more

I decided to try out this salon for a curl by curl cut in November of 2021. I had finally started embracing my natural waves during quarantine, after about 20 years of consistently ironing my hair straight and getting annual Brazilian blowouts. As a child I had never had a good cut and couldn't ever figure out how to wear my natural hair. The reviews were great so I decided to see a regular (middle tier) stylist. I have very thick, long, wavy Middle Eastern hair (2c). The stylist gave me a cut that would work better on a tighter coil. She gave me a layer that does not properly blend in, it just sits on top of the bottom layer. It is now April, I have tried a variety of products and tools at different price points (she made it a point to mention that I would need high end products to look good)and I can honestly say my waves looked better before this cut. The stylist didn't do much in terms of teaching me the best techniques on how to manage my curls at home. She answered direct questions when prompted but did little to guide me, even though I had made it clear that I hadn't worn my natural hair out in public since I was a child. Overall the experience was disappointing. The haircut was mediocre, the stylist wasn't particularly friendly or helpful. I would not recommend this business to anyone with thick waves, especially considering the price point. read more

SHAI: Always hated my hair and never knew how to handle my curls so I got in the habit of just chemically straightening my hair for 8+ years. About 2 years ago I decide I wanted to give it another try and let my curls grow out. I'm very picky on who I'll let touch my hair because not everyone can cut curly hair, it takes a real talent. I did a lot of research and came across Shai (curl doctor) I was very hesitant and scared but I called and made an appt. for 3 months out, I drove all the way from San Jose to LA for him to cut my hair. It was honestly the best decision I have ever made!!!! He was the sweetest person, and made sure I was comfortable with everything. I normally get depressed and cry when it comes to even a simple trim, but he cut off 7-8 inches and the whole time I was so happy and excited I was loving the outcome. He did a nice treatment to hydrate my curls and styled. His assistant taught me step by step the right way to care for my curls and style at home. This review is long overdue. I booked an appointment last year (September 2015) after my original hairdresser moved to New York and abandoned me. The appointment I made was with Marley and the deposit was $75 (I believe). The day of my appointment, I receive a call from the salon asking if I was running late. At the time, I found this odd, because I was sure my appointment was for the next day. The lady over the phone told me that my appointment was, in fact, scheduled for that day. I was already 15 minutes late and it was 5:00 pm on a weekday in Los Angeles. There was no way I could have made it to the appointment anymore coming from Century City. I apologized so many times and knew that I was going to lose the $75 deposit. However, the lady on the phone said she would speak with Marley and ask her if there was anything that could be done for me. She placed me on hold and came back to say, "Marley has an available spot tomorrow if you would like to take it and the $75 deposit will go towards the haircut." I was blown away! I thought for sure I had lost the appointment and my money, but Marley was kind of enough to accommodate me in her schedule for the following day. Awesome customer service! The next day I showed up 15 minutes early and was seated promptly. I was offered refreshments and asked to put on a black robe. Marley was sweet and asked me what I was looking for that day. I told her I wanted to keep the length, but need some layers. This was my first time getting my hair trimmed dry, let alone getting a DEVA CUT! I was very excited to see the results. Marley worked her magic and then I was off to a cleanse and condition. I loved sitting there having my hair tended to. The girl who washed my hair (forgot her name) was so very sweet. Next time I see her, I will edit this review with her name. My hair was diffused and I purchased DevaCurl cleanser, conditioner, and the gel. I loved my haircut and the products I purchased. I had the honor of seeing Shai for a Deva cut this past weekend. It was an awesome experience and I will definitely see him again! I drove from Phoenix that morning so I was a bit tired by the time I saw him. Upon walking into the salon, I was immediately greeted by a very friendly receptionist who offered me a beverage and checked me in for my appt. I was fairly early so I had the chance to look around and "people watch" for a bit before my appointment. I have to say I was thoroughly impressed by all of the cuts/styles that were coming out of the place! I don't know that I have ever been in a salon where all of the stylists were so talented. Shai started out my appointment by asking me what products I use, how much I am comfortable with cutting, and also a short lecture about blow drying/flat ironing my hair (haha). He started out with the Deva cut, then his assistant followed up with the wash and conditioning treatment. She was so friendly! She thoroughly explained what she was doing and how I should be using the products. Although I had already been using the products, her tips have helped tremendously since I have been home. After the wash and blow dry, Shai took another look at my curls and trimmed a bit more. The appointment did not take very long yet my curls looked the best they have looked in years! I feel so blessed to have been able to see Shai and his wonderful team. They gave me the confidence I lacked to wear my hair natural. I am excited to have my curls back!!! My hair was virgin hair (aka no color) and I got partial highlights. Marlee was my stylist and she was a doll. I was glad to have her because she knows what she is doing. I don't trust my hair to just anybody and do a lot to ensure it is healthy and strong. I went in with zero damage and freshly trimmed hair and I still felt that my hair was much better afterwards. The only downside is the cost, so save up, ask questions specific to your hair and prepare to pay the cost of having fabulous hair (it ain't cheap). I so wanted a haircut from him but I have to admit I was a bit thrown off by the cost of a cut so I stupidly went to another salon. She styled it beautifully, walked me through step by step on how to style my hair on my own and how to remove the build up from my other hair products that i've been using, and she had me walk away with a whole new knowledge on how to take care of my natural curls. I 100% recommend her for the curl by curl cut! The salon itself is very clean and welcoming, plays good music, and really does have a genuinely luxurious feeling. No one seemed snooty or mean (something i feel like i always encounter at salons?) and everyone was helpful and kind. The chairs for when you rinse had MASSAGERS (like omg how genius is that) and the treatment itself really rejuvenated my curls. I know that sometimes the price for a curly cut will dissuade you from coming, but I spent spent 3 hours getting it treated, cut, styled, and i was educated in the process. Patrick is an artist and a true professional, who will recommend an approach and work WITH you, not impose his own vision. He is adept at Deva cuts for curly hair, and is a wonderful colorist. I recently went to him in preparation for an out of town professional meeting, and I got so many compliments on my hair I lost count. My third time coming her to get my curls cut. Shai being the master that he is fixed my hair the first time. The second time I got it done by Andrea and she was just as good. This third time getting it cut with Claudia, with whoever you go with they are all great and know how to work with curly hair which is the important part. They were all great, and even though I wait a year to come back, my curls still look better than hw I had it before I came in the first place. read more

Not enough words to describe how happy I am to have found Capella salon, The Curl Doctor, Shai Amiel, and his staff, especially my absolute curl-lifesaver, Sophie! The struggle is real with Curly hair but not if you go to Capella. The salon is clean, the bathrooms are clean, and the layout of the chairs is an open space to enjoy your appointment and discuss your hair maintenance in private with your stylist, if needed. The customer service is above and beyond, and when it comes to care, maintenance, confidence, and overall hair salon experience this place is a 10 out of 10. I just moved to LA from the Bay Area and I would have made a ton of yo yo trips just to get my hair done while living up there if I'd have known about a salon that specializes in curly hair. This place caters to the non-curly haired folks too. I'm speaking as someone who is over the moon to have a salon where curls are a specialty and this is a new experience as someone with 30+ yrs experience going to salons where my curls didn't have this kind of TLC.
