We were in Baton Rouge for a conference and after arriving and being told out rooms weren't ready, we walked over to Lloyd's for lunch. It's an interesting place, more like a diner to me. You walk in, place your order at the counter then find a table. They bring your food out to you and check on you throughout. Service is pretty good The food here is good! So good that we visited them two days in a row lol. Both times I ordered the shrimp platter. First time I got the regular size and got the large the second. The shrimp are huge and fried well. Seasoned too! I loved the coleslaw too. The fries were standard fare but were hot and good. Now you see why I ordered the large platter second time. I wanted more shrimp lol. I also ordered the bread pudding the second time and it was melt in your mouth goodness. I didn't have room to eat it all so happily shared it with those in my party. The food was hot when it was brought to my table. The chicken steamed when you broke it apart and the coleslaw was housemade. The cabbage and carrots were still crisp and was dressed well, not soggy and drowned or overly seasoned, it had th perfect vinegary, peppery kick while still tasting fresh. The red beans were creamy with a good flavor and the rice wasn't gummy and overcooked. I meet the co-owners as both were working, taking orders, delivering food, and making sure the customers were taken care of. After my lunch, I chatted with one of the co-owners and you could tell when regulars came to eat because they knew them by name. They even had a small town feel with a little store with treats in the front at th check out counter. I always try to start off with the good. This place has an amazing location near the river in downtown Baton Rouge. Looking out the window at the cascading view to the river was tranquil. I ordered the half/hand poboy with shrimp and crawfish. The bread they use in my opinion is award winning. I could just eat the French bread buttered with nothing else. The poboy was good but it wasn't necessarily exceptional (again the bread is). The fries weren't horrible but they weren't "good" fries either. I use my toddlers as a grading scale for fries. They didn't touch them after the first bite. The patato salad was a bit runny for my liking and had just a little too much dill weed. They do have restrooms. The inside is quaint. It wasn't crowded but outside of the dining area there isn't much room for people to wait on to-go orders. The staff were very pleasant and that's always a plus. While in Baton Rouge for work I had a real craving for some authentic Cajun food- and that's exactly what I found at Poor Boy Lloyd's. We were staying at the Hilton across the street and walked here around 5pm on a Saturday. There was a parking lot next to the restaurant, but I'm not sure if it was paid or not. When you walk in there is a counter with an "order here" sign. After standing there for a few minutes, we were told we could sit anywhere and a server would be with us soon. We got pretty quick service for the restaurant being ~75% full. I got the shrimp po' boy with fries and my wife got the red beans and rice. Both came out relatively fast and were good portions. Neither of our entrees were especially hot, but tasted good. The fries were hot and crispy, but didn't seem to be seasoned. There was a condiment station near our table that had a variety of hot sauces, pepper sauce, and ketchup, mustard, etc. Their desserts sounded good, but we didn't get anything. The server gave us our ticket and we paid at a cashier by the exit. The cashier also had cigarettes and candy for sale, which was...interesting. The owners were very friendly and knowledgable and helped us pick something on the menu that we would like. We settled on choosing the special Po Boy and a side of red beans and rice. Both of them were very good and we ate everything. The Po Boy sandwich was so big that we were able to split it between the two of us and both be full. The place did not disappoint! You order from the counter, where they write your order and name on a ticket. I ordered a cup of the gumbo and a side of boudin balls. After ordering, you're free to take a seat at any open table. The food came pretty quickly and was quite delicious. The boudin balls were quite large and very tasty and the gumbo had small crab legs that I pull additional meat off. I arrived around 11:45 and there was a line, but I was able to find a table. By the time I left, around 12:30, the restaurant was packed. Staff was super friendly. A lady calls names once food is ready, then brings it to you on a tray. I was told one market price ($14ish) at the ordering counter and was charged (17.99) much more by the cashier. Was told $1.99 for a bottle of water and was charged $3.00 by the cashier. The ham and cheese sandwiches for the kids meals were very good as well. Kids loved them. Our food, we had the beef po boy, and it fell short. The meat was cold and so was the bread. A true family owned and run business that knows no strangers! We went for dinner. The food was great--I'd a shrimp Po'boy--and my co-workers and I all loved what we ordered. The po'boy was so well done, with the shrimp being fried in a delicate breading and so yummy!!!! A person at the table gave her very southern husband's way of ordering: if there's both a platter and a po'boy on the menu, order the po'boy and then take it apart and eat it like a platter. I followed that suggestion and it was amazing!!! I loved my food so much I went back for an oyster platter for lunch today. (9 fried oysters, fries, salad and a slice of bread--amazing!!!!) I ordered it to go because there is an LSU game here in Baton Rouge tonight and they are closing early. Well we ordered off the menu on their website and when we got there the total was higher than advertised. When I asked about it the old man was rude saying they can change their prices anytime they want. I agree they can but if they do they should update their website. So I already wasn't happy but I had walked 8 blocks to get it so I just paid and left. I regret that. The food definitely was not worth what I paid. I would have been disappointed even if it was free. The poboy bread was so tough. Beef jerky is more tender than that bread was. My husband had the spaghetti and said one meatball tasted ok the other was bad. He has eaten there before and said the food has gone downhill. I wont be back.
