The cherry pancakes were pancakes covered with cherry pie filling topping. No cherry flavoring in the pancakes at all. The ham seemed more like fried spam. Celiac/Gluten-Free Review: When we first moved to Williamsburg, we had been on the hunt for a gluten-free friendly pancake house for an occasional breakfast out. The hunt is over because this is it! My husband and I went here at like 6 AM (right as they first opened). They weren't very busy, which for us, was a major plus. It had a nice, hometown feel to the place, but surprisingly, it was almost empty of people. The staff was a bit absent but very friendly and quick to get you anything you needed. My husband ordered the ham, eggs (over hard), and hash brown breakfast. I ordered blueberry waffles with bacon. While I agree they were a bit overpriced for adding bacon to your order (or other alternative), they weren't more expensive than the restaurants back home about it. The food was reasonably priced. I don't understand why people were complaining about pancakes and waffles being bland. The waffles tasted lovely to me. My husband and I are quite picky eaters, yet we absolutely LOVED the food. The service was friendly and attentive. The pancakes were excellent, light and fluffy. We had the Apple pancakes which was excellent. Corn beef hash was also very good. Not sure about the other bad reviews, but we did not see any of the issues the other yelpers had mentioned. There were lot's of local regulars which is always a good sign when scouting out local establishments if you are an outoftowner like us. Tried this place out with my three year old. The weather was 100 degrees out, which felt the same in the restaurant. How do you not turn on the AC on a hot day? Horrible. $10.29 for an omelette. Get the omelette & it's as dry as leather. Open it up, no cheese. Come to find out cheese is separate. Doesn't mention this anywhere on the menu & waitress doesn't mention it. We stopped by for lunch before my parents returned home to Missouri after spending a week in Williamsburg visiting the grandkids. The Capitol Pancake House is a family operation and it shows. We always feel welcome and comfortable. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. The food is tasty, hot and on time with a surprisingly diverse and very affordable menu in a very clean and pleasant atmosphere. If you can only choose 1 place for breakfast or lunch. Upon walking in, I looked for sanitation grade but did not see it posted and visible. That raised concerns for me. It I was with a group so I just went on and ate there, aside from being unsure. I tasted my husbands fried chicken and it was dry, unseasoned and horrible!! The waffles were hard and overcooked. The prices were over priced for the quality of this food! I got an omelet that tasted just OKAY but every single item was 0.50 extra. All omelets come with the egg of course and the ONE item in it.....for example one meat will conclude your omelet. Other than that, you must pay extra for each individual thing (onions, pepper, etc), and if you want cheese, it's $1 extra!! The place looked very old and dated!! DO NOT eat here! I would have given it one star but decided to give it two because our waitress was super nice & professional. read more

I noticed the owner or manager go into the kitchen and told another waitress, not the waitress who greeted us, about us just sitting there without so much as a single water. She after a 10 minute wait took our 2 waters and 1 coffee order. Waited another 10 minutes for the drinks to arrive and place our food order. Waited an additional 30 minutes for our food to finally arrive. By the way, the homefries are actually potato wedges (don't be fooled). After eating I piled our dirty dishes at the end of the table thinking that would get someone's attention. Nope that didn't even work, even the owner/ manger took notice, but did nothing. I had to go to the owner/ manger and ask for the bill. From the time I piled the dishes up till the time I had to go ask for the bill was 10 minutes. The waitress never came to refill our drinks at all. After the first 5 minutes I started a timing everything. When I approached the owner/ manager about everything all he said was "I'm sorry you had a bad experience." Then proceeded to watch me like a criminal as I paid and left. NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!!! I'd rate this hole negative stars if I could. read more

My family has been travelling to Williamsburg for over 18 years and usually go 8 times a year. We traditionally eat our breakfast at the Capitol Pancake House. The location is less than a mile from Colonial Williamsburg and always maintained nicely. The staff is friendly and responsive and the owner typically visits the tables to make sure everyone is happy with their meal and service. As a good family business owner, he is working as hard or harder than anyone else. The food is consistently very good and they will cook special orders. I love the french toast, my wife gets various types of garden omelets (with fresh seasonal vegetables), and my children love the pancakes. We have tried other local and franchise breakfast houses in the area and we now only go to Capitol Pancake House. Good service, food, location, management, and a fair price. Do yourself a favor and give it a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

Very pleasant atmosphere, friendly service. Food was served piping hot with generous portions. We ordered the strawberry pancakes w/a side of bacon (4 pieces for $3) & the 3 pigs in a blanket. The 'pigs' were cut in half & only filled 1/2 the pancake but flavor was good. We used the 10% off coupon so the final price wasn't too bad. This restaurant was listed twice. Saw this one and didn't realize it was the same place with 2 stars. The service was slow. My daughter's fries were cold. My hash browns were disgusting. My biscuits were burnt and small. The fruit bowl was completely ridiculous. Brown banana slices and canned blueberries, peaches, and strawberries. We've been here several times and it's usually just a good, basic place for pancakes and eggs. Today (Sunday) it was pretty busy which the restaurant seemed incapable of handling. From sit down to food on the table table took forty minutes. This wouldn't be an issue if we hadn't watched three tables seated after us receive food. Of the four of us, two received their complete meals. To complete our meals, I had to waive the waitress to our table after a long time and request the items specifically. This was also the only chance we had to request a drink refill. My son said his scrambled eggs tasted funny. When I looked I realized it was because they were only half cooked and the eggs were still mostly in a liquid state. At checkout the cashier asked how things were. I calmly and politely explained our experience to her, which resulted in a less than empathetic or concerned response of "oh". In Williamsburg, we have dozens of locally owned pancake houses, making this the last time we'll go to Capitol Pancake. read more

A group of us meet here when we are going to Busch Gardens. We choose this place because it has gluten free menu items and one of the people in our party can't have gluten. We liked it the first time we came. Every time we come though, we like it a little bit less. The food seems to be going downhill. The home fries were great when we went last year, this year they are not well seasoned and almost always raw in the middle. Biscuits and gravy ... I've had better at cheap hotel banquets. Not very flavorful at all. All I can say is I am very disappointed in the food as is everyone else in my group of 6. Time to find another gluten free breakfast place in Williamsburg! read more

Traveling home from VA Beach, Mother's Day, super busy but we only waited 10 minutes to get seated. Took about 10 minutes for a server to get our order, 10-15 more to get our coffee and drinks. About an hour before we got served our food. We thought they forgot about us and were ready to find the closest Chick Fila at this point. Servers and host kept walking by our table but no one once checked on us or apologized that it was taking so long or asked if we needed anything. When our food finally came it was good (the only reason I gave 2 stars) but our waitress didn't apologize for the long wait. Sorry we made the mistake of stopping to eat here. They weren't ready for a busy holiday crowd. All we ordered was simple breakfast food for 3 adults and a child, and our total was $60. Jacked up prices taking advantage of tourists. Also, noticed the host (man) put menus down on a half-wiped down table. I could see the food crumbs still on the table when he slapped down the menus! read more

Discovered this place in 1986 and have been eating breakfast here ever since whenever I'm in the area. The staff has always been very prompt and friendly with service and the food always fixed to my liking. I usually visit this area in the fall (October or November) when the weather is cooler. Two of the waitstaff have been here since my very first visit in 1986; and even though it's a year, sometimes 2 years, between visits, they remember me -- they recognize the face even though the don't remember the name. I even brought my mother with me on my trip in October 2001, and we ate here each morning; and she was very satisfied with the food and the service. Do NOT go here. We were about to get back on the road to go home after an otherwise good weekend in Williamsburg, and we thought this place looked really good. It's a scam. We went in and saw the parking lot was full, and thought about not eating there, but then our wait was only five minutes, which we took as a good sign. After we were seated, nobody approached us for about ten minutes. When a waiter finally did approach us, we gave our drink and food order and he left. Ten minutes later he did come back to refill my drink, and then that's when the waiting started. For about 45 minutes, we did not see our waiter and we did not see our food. In this whole time, the table next to us got their food, ate their whole meal, and left with to go boxes. Finally we had enough and I went up front, told them how long we had been waiting, and said what our waiter looked like. Not even five minutes later we get our food. The waiter did not bring us any silverware, but instead a giant wad of napkins that were attached to each other...I had to go to any empty table and steal clean silverware from there. Again, we didn't see our waiter from then until we left. We waited another 15-20 minutes after we ate even and he never came with the bill. We had to go up front, tell them what we ordered, and then pay a whopping $34 for food that was left out and not given to us for a long time. A rip off! At the very least we deserved a discount for this abhorrent service. Your money is better spent at IHOP, where the food is cheaper and will taste better and arrive on time. Don't ruin your love of breakfast food by going to this dump. read more
