Don't come here if you don't have a New Jersey ID. The food was really good, but other than that, we did not have a good experience here. My partner and I live in NYC and we were visiting Asbury Park for the first time for a concert. We accidentally got there a little early, so we decided to grab a drink and a bite to eat. He's originally from Texas and I'm from Tennessee. We showed our IDs and the bartender said they looked "a little flimsy." She took them to a back room and came back and said that she "wasn't going to confiscate these" but she can't serve us. I totally get that if you've never seen an ID from a particular state, it could be hard to verify. She was just doing her job. So we got out our Voter IDs and Vaccination cards to show that we have other official government documents that verify our identities and ages. They took those to the back room and came back and said they were going to confiscate mine. ???? I am a grown adult with a full time job. They said it was a fake because it "didn't have the star on it." Anyone with an 8th grade education knows that there's a difference between "Real ID" and a regular driver's license. You can pay to have your drivers license become "Real ID," and that just makes it on par with passports or social security cards for filling out tax forms and traveling abroad. Real IDs have the star on them. Deciding not to make your drivers license a "Real ID" doesn't make it any less valid or real. It just means you need a supplement ID for I9 forms and shit like that. I don't pay for shit that's not legally necessary, so my drivers license isn't a "real ID." Legally, as of May 2023, you need Real Id to board domestic flights in NY. But it's not mandatory to get one if you have other forms of id. So, despite me showing my Voter ID, my vaccination card, and my health insurance card, they confiscated my actual drivers license. At this point, I didn't even want to drink anymore, I was just freaking out about losing my ID and being treated like I was a criminal. Much to my dismay, I am a very anxious person, so I unfortunately started having a panic attack. I was spiraling and crying because I was really scared that I was going to have to call the cops to come verify my ID. Luckily, I guess they just felt bad for me or something so they eventually gave it back and said "just be careful here with out of state IDs." I do deeply apologize for making a scene. That was really embarrassing for me. However, you have to admit that this entire situation was absurd. Later at the concert, I met a girl and she told me that this same bar confiscated her New Jersey license a couple of years ago because they thought it was a fake! She was 25 at the time and had lived in New Jersey her entire life. Overall, the food we ate was good, but being treated like criminals wasn't super fun. I understand that they were just doing their jobs and I can't blame them for that. But certainly, there must be a better system for this kind of thing. You can't just go around taking people's government IDs because you've never seen one from certain states before. read more

I'm not sure why their address is on Mattison Avenue except that they share a large, whole block building with other restaurants and I believe they also share that same liquor license. Perhaps that's why the Mattison Avenue address. It's really on Cookman. My wife and I sat al fresco on Cookman for a quick meal before a show at House of Independents (I review that too). They did a nice renovation job internally. Shane our server was excellent. He ran down the New Jersey-Centric beer selection and knew the menu up and down. His service also was great. Not a real extensive menu but one thing stands out, the prices are very reasonable; especially considering it's Asbury Park. Individual pizzas were $5 or $6 depending on what you got on them; appies were cheap too! We decided to share the Italian Nachos ($6). The nachos were crispy thin-sliced and baked; not fried. They were adorned with spicy sausage, peppers, chives, tomatoes, and a delicious ricotta sauce (for lack of a better description). Each of us decided on an individual pizza; mine was pepperoni and mozzarella ($6). It had a thick yet crispy crust that was a bit too thick for me. It was good but in a town that has superb pizza I feel they've got a bit to strive for to achieve great status. If you like Sicilian or thick crust it's worth giving them a shot. Menus ever evolve and prices are great so I will definitely be back. read more

However, the food was wayyy over priced and disappointing. $12 for a chicken cutlet sandwich and it doesn't even come with chips, let alone fries. On top of that, I asked for red onion to be added on and they charged us $2, like really?!! I must admit, the sandwich itself was good though! My wife got a plain pie, $17 for barely a 12 inch pie that tasted EXACTLY like Costco pizza. Super small, super doughy and super greasy. You cannot be charging $17 for pie in Jersey if your pies are that weak. Save yourself some disappointment and money and just go to Johnny Mac's around the corner. read more

Stopped here for a bite before attending a show in Asbury. It was a gorgeous night & we decided to eat outside. This place has not been open long & it has not been open for lunch so I was excited to try it for dinner. This is an awesome place in that it is somewhat like a catacomb. The Bond Street Bar, La Loteria & Capitoline are all connected. I took a walk downstairs to see it & although it was definitely 'basement like', it's really pretty cool. Our waiter, Shane, could not have been nicer or more welcoming. He ran down their craft beer list & seemed to be knowledgeable about each local brewery they offered. I ordered an appy of italian nachos which consisted of extremely light & airy nachos, cheese, sausage, peppers, tomatoes & green onions; it was excellent! You can order personal size or a regular pizza which I understand are quite large. We opted for personal size with me ordering the fungo pizza, portabello mushroom, caramelized onion, goat cheese & pesto. Hubby ordered the pepperoni pizza. Sadly, I was very disappointed in my pizza. The crust is rather thick, & in my case was very greasy. Although the toppings were good, all I tasted was grease. Hubby's was a little better. Not as greasy, but the crust was awful. Overall, I would definitely return. Prices are very reasonable at all of the above mentioned restaurants. This place is so simple but great. Picnic style tables/benches, friendly staff and great food. The pizza looks so heavy but it's actually very light and delicious. A slice is a small personal pie which is enough for two people, or a second meal the next day. read more

I loveeeee Capitoline. I think the service is always wonderful, and there's such a variety of beers and things to eat - although I do think that everyone should get the pizza while there. My usual go to is to get multiple pizzas for the table and everyone can have a slice or two of each. I've loved everyone of them. There's also a bar downstairs which is really cool as well. There's a lot of good pizza in Asbury Park - but Capitoline's Margherita is my favorite in the city, by a long shot.

One word: Excellent. Why? 1. Its inviting storefront. I mean, who slides up an entire glass wall as if it's just a small window?? But its top half gets raised just so, like a garage door, which allows the bar-type seats to go al-fresco. 2. Its modern rustic, airy interior. 3. Its service is neither half-baked nor over-done... 4. The food period. At least the ones we tried. 5. For the warm(ish) weather and the beach town. Are you kidding me--it's a must-stop eatery on Cookman Ave.. Enuff said, but still... Final word: You've got to try the Margherita pie. Which is big enough for two hungry adults or (one so hungry he or she could eat the other). You might mistake it for a thin-ish Sicilian at first glance for its rectangular shape and slight thickness (it's slightly thicker than the typical round ones I've gotten used to), but the taste is unmistakably Margherita and light, including the crust. The only minor thing is that a pie we ordered another day was a pinch on the salty, which got devoured nonetheless. So, again, consistency for the "tasty" is a must even for cool restaurants such as this, and more so for cool restaurants such as this. Also note: The huge round tray of Italian nachos. And another round. Because you probably won't find a platter this pretty anywhere else (unless you've had something like "baked" chips with light-tasting melted white cheese in nachos before--please share the info). Also, vegans or vegetarians could, you know, opt out of the sausage topping. Final note: You'd wish you had more space in your gut, so make sure you go there completely empty. I will always allow for COViD situations as well as short staffing. That is a new epidemic and we must have patience. But... update the menu if what is served is not what is offered. My Agrodolce salad promised arugula and radicchio. It was a basic "spring mix" of greens with no arugula and no radicchio. The sourdough bread and olive oil was not sourdough, but basic baguette (four tiny slices) the herbed oil was delicious. Cocktails and wine were fine. We honestly came here on a whim - originally trying to get to Talula's but we are so happy we came here instead. We tried the artichoke appetizer (must have) calamari, GF pizza, and the veggie pizza (really really good.) I was pleasantly surprised by the drinks - lemonade with rosemary and mint, nice wine selection, and their drink "the bitter end" - that drink was outstanding. Great causal dinning experience. I had the meat lovers small pie and was very satisfying. The meat was excellent and the portions were just right. The beer I had was asbury park blonde. Was a very light refreshing beer. My date had the meatballs and breadsticks. The meatballs were homemade and very delicious. She had the dark city brownie beer and enjoyed it. I had a nice experience at Capitoline. My friends and I came there from a brewery tour to fill up on some carbs. The storefront and entire decor of the place is very rustic and inviting. I like the bench type Table we sat at as it was very spacious and the bar seating was also nice. Between the three of us, we shared the bruschetta as an appetizer which I must say was excellent. Then we each ordered a pizza and shared across the three. However, I will say that the bruschetta and perhaps some of the pizza were heavy on the garlic. TL;DR the bouncers are sexist. I've come here before and had a great time in their lower level bar. However, the last two occasions I've come, whatever woman I've been with has been denied entry because she'd supposedly been drinking too much. On both occasions, we were rightfully shocked to hear this because it was quite early and we'd only just gotten started. This last instance, however, it became really apparent why this was. The bouncer, a 5'5"ish guy, was sweet talking all the ladies as they were entering. Now, I'm not going to make any judgements about him based on the types of girls he seemed to be interested in, but my boyfriends sister in full zombie garb from the days festivities clearly didn't fit that profile and she was denied entry on a bogus claim. This is blatant sexism. The last time we were here there was so much hurt and confusion caused by a similar judgement made against a different woman that she was nearly inconsolable until the bouncer realized his mistake and let us in. Just beware, this place is actually really cool, but women should expect their level of intoxication to be more closely scrutinized at the door. Ever since the girlfriend and I stumbled lost into world-famous Asbury Park a couple of years ago, this storied town's been an antiquing/vintage mecca for us but we'd never tried one of the many new eateries until now. We happened upon the Complex through Capitoline's entrance on Cookman Avenue across from our favorite stores, and lo and behold, it was like discovering a hidden world: cool new bars and restaurants with great food (I had the meat-lovers' pizza; my girlfriend, from a family including a gourmet amateur Italian chef, approved of her pasta dish), beer (vanilla porter our server recommended), service (kudos to Kara working Christmas week), prices (reasonable as Capitoline claims), and atmosphere, sort of repurposed industrial, fun to explore.
