Caprichos is a well known restaurant, I say that even though this was my first time going in. I go by here every morning in my way to work around 7:00 am and it is always packed, today was no exception but knowing I wanted to experience this place for myself I left a bit earlier for work. Parking can be challenging especially seeing this restaurant runs on Lonsdale Ave a busy street in itself. The line was out the door and that's where I stood waiting patiently. The love moves at a decent pace. Here finally my turn and I honestly had no clue what to expect or what they even really sold but I was hoping they had anything that contained ham and cheese and they did, Brad with ham and cheese for $3.50 I was surprised that was all. They do gave finger foods, drinks coffee and fruit drinks, breads, pastries of many sorts. I was tempted to get a pastry but I stayed focused. The bread was actually good and tasted fresh they only concern which was a big one for me was that there was hardly any ham and cheese in it and I mean like barely none. I could have actually went with just bread as that's what I felt I received. Would I return maybe especially if I am in mood for something g sweet as the variety was plenty to choose from. This is such a hidden GEM whole in the wall! The best part is that this place is authentic Colombian food. My friends always rave about it here and I'm so happy I discovered it. I don't speak much Spanish so used to get intimidated going into order but the food is just so good, it was worth every trip. Great news is that they just got an online ordering platform! You can order right online for pick up and bypass the long line out the door. The place is always busy but worth the wait, I would definitely suggest ordering online if you are in a rush. They don't have much parking but I always somehow find street parking. It's a very casual place with cafeteria style seating. I like to go to Caprichos for their buñuelos and empanadas. The café offers breakfast options and Colombian treats that can definitely fill you up. Very affordable. Last time I also tried their chicharrones with a side of platano maduro. Next time ask for lime on the side as well. I also tried their arepa con queso which was delicious as well. Always serving amazing Colombian food. The service here is fast and capable of working through a long line. Seating is available inside. One caveat is they don't speak English that well but their food is displayed where you are able to point at. The pastel de pollos are my favorite. The empanada de carnes pair great with them. I have been coming here for about 15 years! I absolutely love the food they sell. They have a lovely variety of fresh baked breads and Colombian pastries (they accept food stamps for those items). There is also a nice variety of Colombian ready hot foods as well. All served fresh every time. The staff is always friendly, but very limited on their english, which is fine because you can still communicate about the different items. They have a small parking lot in back and tables to dine in, however, I always buy to-go because it is very small and always crowded in there. It is also pretty loud and there are no restrooms which is why I give 4 stars. As far as the food, I highly highly recommend, like I said I have been coming here for 15 years and nevwr have been let down. read more

Delicious. I had a beef empanada and a chicken empanada. Both were quite tasty, not greasy at all and were accompanied by an extremely hot salsa which was very good, but very hot. Little goes a very long way. I also tried the chicharrone (which has yelp can't spell for me) and it was very interesting. Good. Very very crunchy- gave nice strong teeth and nice pork flavor. Also not greasy. Also tried the plantain- I am partial to the sweet ones. This was ok I just like 'em sweeter. I look forward to going back. Ladies behind counter were super. This Colombian bakery and restaurant is always packed - with reason. Admittedly, every time I've come in it's been just for a quick bite, usually an empanada or two. Most customers and workers speak Spanish to each other. Since I don't, it sometimes feels intimidating waiting my turn in line, but most often the person who waits on me does help me out by speaking English with me. I so appreciate that! If no one offers to speak English, I know what I want so I just point to it. Given how busy it is, I've never been tempted to eat at one of the small table or the counter at the window. The ambience of a place is hard to judge when nearly every square inch is filled with people, so I can't comment on what it would be like to do more than take out. My absolute favorite thing to get here is the mini cheese enchilada. (I think it's actually a fried arepa tbh, but I'm not entirely sure). The cheese filling is creamy and very sweet, and I dream of it between visits. No photos, though: it's too crowded to waste time snapping while I'm in line, and I'm not waiting to photograph this yummy thing before I start chowing down! Usually I go back to my car (I've been lucky to get parking in the small lot in the back) and just start eating - even when my food is almost too hot to eat, because yeah, it's that good. read more

There is a small parking lot in the back, but I was able to find parking on the residential street down the block which was great. When we went into the restaurant there was a long line of people ordering items. We ordered a few of the empanadas, arepa con choclo, chorizo, and buñuelo. I don't know what they are, but the little chicken meatball things with their salsa are the stuff that dreams are made of. And that large, fluffy potato ball with the beef? Been coming here for years...then stopped, and now I'm back again! Picked up some flaky filled pastry - super crisp, sweet and yummy. Would get again and recommend. Also picked up some cheese bread. Bread is soft and almost challah-like...but not sweet. Cheese inside is melty and plentiful. Shop is small but thriving at all hours, even now during COVID. Yes parking is annoying and tight but people are usually in and out quickly anyway. Lots of variety and prices here are fair as well. Give this place a try if you are in the area :) read more

This place is the real deal. Authentic Colombian empanadas. The difference with these is the empanada dough they used to make them. It's an orange color and it's soft. I personally like these better than the crispy empanadas you get at the Spanish places. They serve them with this homemade hot sauce that's unbelievable. I don't speak Spanish, and the little that I do is not good. So I actually emailed them my order and picked it up. The selection is terrific as it's not just a "bakery" for desserts, but they have meat based dishes too. The empanadas, pastel de pollo and chorizo were all great. The arepas too. I tried chicharron for the first time and I enjoyed it, though wouldn't be my go to order. Their dessert pastries are also very tasty. Highly recommend. The food is always hot, fresh, and delicious The Cons: Parking is a little tough, their teeny tiny lot out back only has a couple of spots, and this place is usually pretty packed (pre-quarantine life of course) which means parking can be hard to come by Lucky for me, habla un poquito espanol... this definitely helps when trying to figure out what is what and makes ordering go a little smoother. GO HERE! You will not be disappointed. Take a little walk and park your car further away. If speaking Spanish isn't your thing they will try their best to work with you and convey their message. I newly discovered the Arepas and WOW makes me want to break out into Spanish song and dance (I am a 5'3 Asian girl who doesn't speak fluent Spanish so this would have been hilarious) but YES that's how much I love Caprichos Antiquenos! Anywho, my newly discovered obsession are the Arepas which I'm not quite sure what they are but I believe they are corn based flat pancake like discs which butter and cheese is added to the top to eat. This is your typical Latino Columbian Bakery. Everyone here is very nice and they all speak Spanish. If I lived here this would be my #1 breakfast spot. Cafe con leche (coffee with milk) comes already sweetened to perfection! ... And ready for the dipping of my cheesy bread. Wide selection of typical Columbian breads, empanadas, papa rellena and arepas, and fresh cheese. They also serve coffee, hot chocolate and a variety of sodas. Found this nice authentic Colombian place on the way home. Workers mostly speak Spanish and the TV is even on a Colombian channel! Very nice atmosphere, friendly people. This is a hidden gem. Similar to others, I found it on Yelp. We were in the neighborhood eating another Spanish restaurant so decided to check out the bakery for the empanadas, which my son got hooked on in Mexico. They were delicious (we had the chicken), especially warm right after they give it to you. We warmed several others at home, which were good but not as amazing as when you ate it on the spot. The Orange color seemed unusual but don't let it deter you. Thankfully I spoke a little Spanish. The lady who served us spoke really zero English but was very nice and patient. The churros were also excellent. We also tried the bunuelos - round fried dough balls - that were also tasty. Can't wait to go back and try other food from here. I've only tried the empanadas and the arepa de choclo, but they have a variety of foods and pastries that I look forward to trying more of. The staff is very friendly. It's one of those places that always has a line out the door any time you go, I think that says it all!
