I love sorpresa most of the time! They serve Colombian style food. They always have a good selection of food and it is always usually fresh, I think there was only one time where it wasn't, it really depends on the time of day. They have the buffet style food display where you can pick your own plate. They do not speak english, but they are not stupid and are able to interpret with hand movements or google translate. They have $5 plates and $8 plates. They also have delicious empanadas for $2 and a small section of assorted colombian pastries. Definitely recommend coming here for a quick eat-in or to go plate! read more

Visited La Sorpresa today for baked goods and a plate for lunch, cafeteria-syulr. Baked goods were fresh. I loved the churros. The plate I ordered had white rice and beans, chicharrones, and I added a sausage on the side. Very filling. They do update the menu frequently. Staff doesn't really speak English, but they were fast and prompt. Although there is a lot of seating in the bakery, La Sorpresa to me feels more like a grab and go spot, especially when it is located on a busy main street. Came by yesterday evening as part of a long walk. We got the special, which was carne asada, rice and salad for $13, and split it between the two of us. It was plenty of food so very cost-effective. More importantly, it was fresh, tasty, and healthy. We also got a chicken empanada which was also delicious. We ate in, so got our food on proper plates, rather than styrofoam. Delicious empanadas! I also loved that they had Huy Fong's Sriracha on the tables and very strong rooster decor. See photos. There was only one customer in line ahead of us when we arrived for a late lunch around 2:30 pm. Aside from the roosters, there is not a ton of atmosphere inside, but the food is delicious and the service friendly. They also have a nice patio with plenty of outdoor seating. There is some lot parking and also street parking. Aside from the empanadas they also serve chorizo, pastries and baked goods as well as a variety of sodas, beer and wine and delicious fresh fruit juice. I get the same thing every time I come here, and have been coming here for years. The food is amazing- always fresh. I get the white rice with an order of chicken & have them put the chicken broth on the rice- best plate in there & it's healthy. You can taste the freshness. It's also a great portion for the money, it's cheap to eat there & you can even eat inside. Also the passion fruit & other juices are sooo good! They also have little desserts, an ice cream cooler with a wide variety of tasty ice cream & even have a huge drink selection. Pretty hard to find something you DON'T like here. I sometimes come early in the morning around 4:30/5 when they open after working third shift at my job overnight. I came one morning last week & asked for my order- the white rice with the chicken. The girls looked at each other and kept looking at me as if I was talking crazy. They told me they didn't know what white rice was so I said it in Spanish and they didn't know either. They kept looking at each other confused then started smirking and laughing. How are you Spanish and I say white rice in Spanish and you have no idea what I'm talking about. And I've come in here multiple times and never had a problem. The girls working early in the morning and extremely rude & I always tip 5$ or more every time I come in and will no longer be doing that due to this ignorant situation. I also came here on a Friday after work at 9:30 pm all the food was gone and they were even throwing some away. I said you guys don't close til 11 they said sorry we're closed now. On Friday at 9:30 when they close at 11... bad business. Tried to get in contact with a manager or owner but no one speaks English or doesn't answer the phone. I tried looking online & even on Facebook & messaged them through Facebook & didn't ever get a response. The people that own and work at this establishment clearly do not care about their clients and customers. The beef empanadas were particularly crisp and satisfying, with generous portions of well-seasoned beef. The passion fruit (known as maracuyá in Colombia) aguas frescas was delicious, not overly sweet as these Latin American drinks can be, and the tangy flavor provides a nice contrast to the palate as you enjoy the fried empanadas. The last few times I have been, I've noticed that the quality of the empanadas are going downhill. The filling for both beef and chicken empanadas are flavorless and not juicy. I have stopped at this location twice and have to say I am not impressed at all. This place is clean, safe and the parking is excellent and convenient but each time I have been here I have received the least appetizing empanadas. They are hard fried to the extreme and lack in texture and flavor. I have had better luck heating microwaved empanadas from the grocery store. I was really hoping this place would be a consistent stop for me as I pass it a few times a month but both orders I've received were barely mediocre.
