Been there many times over the years because other people I know like it and don't seem to remember how disappointing it is. I will admit that it can be fun when they have a good band. We stayed here for two nights in room 5 overlooking the lake. The bar and restaurant is no longer but they do killer pizza on Friday and Saturdays. The bed was very uncomfortable and the TV VERY small but the atmosphere made up for it. Across the street is Strand Brewery and down the street is another brewery with live bands, cold beer, and amazing food. Dockside Dan's is a short distance too!! The owners Jack and Becky were absolutely amazing in every way!!! This place would be perfect if fixed up and modernized. 30 minutes from St. Joe, 20 minutes from Releaf dispensary, and 30 minutes from Notre Dame. read more

The restaurant and bar portion are closed down. We stayed at the Inn. We have used the Inn previously as I have family in the area. The rooms are nice, we had a sliding glass door that opened to the lake. Unfortunately, I believe this entire outfit will be closed soon. Sad, it has been quite convenient. read more

I don't understand where the attitude of this place comes from. Their food is hit or miss (usually miss), but they're one of the only spots in town. Because of that, we've been going here for years. I think the ambiance inside is really cute. We just went again over Labor Day weekend. Like the other reviewer, we called on Saturday night for pizza and they were "too busy to for take out orders." OK, very smart of a restaurant to turn down business. On Sunday, they had a band so we went early to grab dinner and a table. I ordered a yardie with their blue drink which turned out to be a real Long Island Iced Tea. I hated it, but that was my bad, so I didn't make a fuss. I just ordered another drink. The pizza was ok (Keeler's was WAY better until they burned down) and my friend ordered a steak, medium well. It came medium rare and was 90% grizzle - seriously disgusting. He didn't make a big deal out of it but sent it back and asked the server (who was very sweet) to take it off the bill. She said the manager said no, and refused to come out to talk to us because he was "busy behind the bar". SERIOUSLY? The restaurant was maybe at 75% capacity. We were not being unreasonable. This was clearly an "end of the season" freezer clear-out. Because half our party wanted to leave early, we asked for their portion of the bill, and the server said they were unable to break up the bill. Not a huge deal, but I seriously felt that they could not have been less accommodating. Lastly, the band was probably great for a concert or beach party (mix of Collective Soul, Bob Marley, Sublime, UB40, Grateful Dead) but we came to DANCE. There is, in fact, a dance floor right in front of the stage. Will try to avoid this place completely in the future. read more

We've gone to this place every July for the past 8 years. We really love there pizza but there is one major drawback. They only have one pizza oven and it takes a long time to get your Pizza. This year we tried to just order it to go and they wouldn't even take our order because in their words "we are too busy for take out orders". We ended up going to Keeler Keg and Kitchen and now have a new favorite Pizza Place. read more

Went to dinner -- eight of us - we go out to eat every weekend during the summer (Board of Trade, Timberline, Capt Jacks ... Others). Some of us have been spending summers on Magician Lake for over 50 years. Had a problem with one of our meals - seven of us got served - my wife had to watch everyone eat for close to 15 minutes. Still a problem, the steak was not cooked - sent back to the kitchen for another 5+ minutes. Now the steak was done, fries weren't refreshed so they were cold, bread wasn't refreshed so went uneaten - everyone was done eating before my wife could start, so she ate half the steak and said she would eat the rest later. The waiter was good as always, he said the chef apologized. We were very surprised that nothing more was said. No "We won't charge for the meal "($15), "We'll only charge you half " ($7.50), or even " we will give you a free drink or desert" .... Nothing! Not doing the right thing now upset me. A group of eight repeat customers deserve to see better. The waiter came by and I quietly told him to be sure we weren't charged for the meal. (Remember, we didn't create the problem - we ordered the food and had an expectation of being able to eat together and for the food to be prepared correctly. Mistakes happen but in this case there were multiple problems - late, undercooked and ultimately served cold) We were told that because we were actually going to eat the rest of the steak (at home) - no allowance would be made. So we gave back the container only to have it returned, again telling us no allowance would be made. I asked to speak to the manager, not realizing that things were now going to get much, much worse. The manager was totally non-apologetic and actually confrontational. I was trying to point out the obvious: we are repeat customers, there were eight of us, we have friends and families in the area - do the right thing and we move on. We probably spent $200 or so that night, the last time we came with a larger group and probably spent close to $400. Maybe it was more important to insist on collecting the $15 on THEIR mistakes than seeing the many $hundreds they have earned from us throughout this summer (and the next summers) - but we all should agree that this just isn't good business. Now for the cap'er. To make what was an issue between one customer and the manager much, much worse (I had the good sense to step away from the table when I spoke with the manager) - the manager actually came back to our table to give what was received as a lecture to all eight of us on, we guess, how she felt she was being treated unfairly by my request. This was viewed by all as TOTALLY inappropriate and likely has ensured that any of us, our friends and families will NOT be coming to Capt Jacks for a long time. One friend told her flat out "You should never, ever criticize your customers". We were all astonished. I finished the experience by paying the full bill, giving the waiter a full tip and feeling satisfied that I was at least doing the right thing for him - none of this was his fault. We threw out the remaining piece of steak. Today, everyone is talking about the very inappropriate behavior of the manager. We should be talking about a nice dinner with a minor problem which was taken care of appropriately. If business is not as good as they would like - maybe they should think through how they handle their own mistakes. If the manager was at another restaurant with a similar situation - how would she feel? read more

This place has the best pizza. As good as chicago and I'm from chicago! My husband and I have a place on a lake nearby. We always order a pizza 3x what we need so we can freeze it and eat it over the winter when they are closed. The owners are so friendly and if you sit at the bar they will get to know you - just like old fashioned resort bars. Where do i start. Food is absolutely the worst ever. Had a salad to start, was old and discolored. Then had the special a Salmon filet grilled with green beans, well let me tell you the Salmon was so small and dry and the baked potato was probably 3 days old, then microwaved, and the Green beans were out of a can. Absolutely disgusting. No wonder there were no customers in the place. Mabe if they can sell it and get some people in there that know what they are doing it could be better, needs a full makeover. Until then I would tell everyone to stay away. Deserves absolutely NO STARS. read more

My second time here on our vacation in the same week and I am in love! One of the best pizzas I have had. Great staff and great service!

Fruit flies galore. They were infested. The fruit flies were on our food, in our drinks and all over our table. We moved tables and they were everywhere. We told owner to cancel our order and they said it was too late! When we explained our displeasure and disgust over the fruit flies, the owner simply stated "oh well that's Mother Nature". I have never eaten in a restaurant with such unhealthy, unsanitary conditions. And prices were high! Food was Mediocre at best, no help was offered to us nor any apology. We will not be back. I do hope they get new owners because this place was a gem in its time. read more

If I could give this "restaurant" a negative 5 star rating, I would. Very disappointed in what is an adorable, cozy place. Our dining experience was ruined by an infestation of fruit flies. We moved tables several times but that did not solve the problem. We flagged down the waitress and told her our problem. She placed a cup of apple cider vinegar on the table and this only created a larger swarm of fruit flies. The fruit flies were in our drinks and appetizer. We spoke to the owner and she was extremely rude and offered no apologies. We wanted to pay for our drinks and cancel our order. She refused and asked us if we wanted it to go. According to her, this was mother nature's problem and not her problem. She stated that all restaurants in this area were infested as are all homes. Funny thing is the other restaurants we visited that weekend had NO fruit flies and either did my friend's home, which is right near this place. We were charged for everything and no discount was offered. Even for the appetizer which we did not get to finish due to all the bugs in our food. I will never return and I suggest all people save their money and follow my lead!! read more

We had been going to this establishment for the last year. We have small children who like to dance on the dance floor to the music that we paid for. This has never been a problem, we have seen multiple families do this with their kids as well. However, the last time we went... I was still finishing my food and our children were dancing on the dance floor, normally I stand out there with them, but our table was very close to the floor this time. There were only 2 other tables in the restaurant and a handful in the bar. The Manager asked us for our kids to sit down, understandable, it is not our establishment. We were in the process of splitting our bill with the other party... before we could even get up. The owner (who I have never seen before) comes and is extremely rude telling us that our kids have been running around the entire night. WHAT A LIE!!!! We were standing waiting for a table for 20 minutes, so yes, our children were not seated at that time. She proceeded to follow us outside yelling things at us and told us that we were just "renters" and she has owned the place for 20 plus years, blah blah... No lady, we do own a home here. However, what is wrong with the renters that come and support our lakes??? She wouldn't give up, not sure if she was drinking or not. It was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a restaurant. She was screaming "call the police"... WHAT??? I can not even begin to explain to you what a crazy experience it was. Pretty sad because the pizza is not bad and when we don't feel like cooking we use to like walking down there. At first we were wondering if we were missing something... we just couldn't believe what was happening. Then a few waitresses came up to us and told us that the Owner is a little crazy at times. No excuse, but it made us feel less crazy. Needless to say we will not be back. I wish someone would buy this place and take over. read more
