I have mixed reviews about Captain Bills. I have one of the best lunches of my life there on my husband's birthday in May 2025; we wanted to return again this year, but life got in the way! Although this review is late, I still remember the exact experiences because I was blown away from this lunch after I had high expectati one and disappointment from their brunch! Mother's Day Brunch 2/5: My grandparents used to take my mom to Sunday brunch when she was younger many many years ago! My parents have went there for brunch multiple times and it was fantastic on a Sunday! My only experience with the brunch was the Mother's Day one and it was severely disappointing after every single person's rave reviews! There was a couple of trays and it was confusing because it was supposed to be kind of between a breakfast and lunch theme, but it was early iand the selections were very very limited and mostly food you wouldn't want to eat at 11 o'clock in the morning like eggplant roll a teeny or heavy dishes like that! Food 5/5: I ordered the Caesar salad and filet with mashed potatoes. The salad was super fresh and they definitely loaded it with extra cheese and croutons and did not charge me! Steak came out well seasoned with a very nice charge on it, perfect maillard! The mashed potatoes were delicious! My husband got the French onion soup, blue point oysters and the salmon dish. The oysters were fresh, and the salmon was cooked and seasoned perfectly. I don't eat French onion soup, and the presentation and the amount of cheese in the soup was something worthy of a magazine photo shoot. Hands-down, it was the best French onion soup he ever had and he orders that a lot and still dreams about itheird until this day! Service 5/5: I have zero complaints about their service because I've only had exceptional wait staff there... once again during the brunch things got a little chaotic, but the staff was able to pull it together; find us a table and overall make the situation go by seamlessly. Ambiance 3/5: if you were seated near a window by the water, you get a beautiful waterfront views. The interior is a little outdated and because they throw a lot of weddings and catered bench. There was kind of disappointed to see that for the prices ambience wasn't as upscale because the prices are! I will give this place another chance for the brunch because it was a holiday and I know Food can suffer because of that (even though it shouldn't ) and definitely for the lunch because like I said one of the best of my life! It would've been a 5 based on lunch, but like I said, I had way higher expectations for their "known" brunches I will go with a 3 out of f5 not letting ambience affect my decision because it's a place on the water and it's sometimes nice to have that kind of low-key vibe but like I said, they definitely charge fine dining prices! -1 ambiance -1 Mother's Day brunch quality I will update my review when I check out the branch and go for another amazing lunch or dinner! Can't go wrong with a waterfront, dining, beautiful ambience, and amazing food. Everything from the weight staff to the decor was amazing. All the food was freshly prepared and very delicious. The waitress recommended the oysters Rockefeller, and that was a great choice. The cocktails were made great and watermelon martini was very tasteful and refreshing. We have used this for years as a place to go on holidays for their excellent brunches. Recently, we tried it for a weekday lunch. The tableside view to the marina was particularly impressive. Opted to start with their Shrimp & Crab Wonton appetizer which was a fun way to present these flavors a bite at a time. Then to keep things different and fresh opted to jump into one of the daily specials of Scallop Remoulade with summer slaw and old bay seasoned fries special (10.4.25). The Scallops were fresh and tasty along with sauce. The summer slaw was special, not being your typical overly mayo/vinegar dressed salad, but keeping things lightly dressed, crunchy and fresh along with the seasoned fries. My Mr got a standard burger and suggested it was as expected. The atmosphere in the outdoor seating was still nice for an October afternoon, not being overly crowded. The service was kind, but a bit slow to get what seemed to be simple items out. All in all a good dining experience where I would consider going back again to try more of the menu. read more

Came here during LI Restaurant Week and had a great time! Even though it was extremely busy on a Friday night, the service was excellent. We did have to valet the car due to the volume of people there, but did not have an issue. I had the calamari for a starter, which was perfectly crispy though I wish there was a bit more flavor. The salmon entree was delicious though, paired with steamed vegetables. For dessert, I had the fudge brownie which was warm and gooey. Overall, a great experience! read more

The food was good, all the basics of brunch but unfortunately for someone who doesn't eat pork there were no breakfast meat alternatives. They did have a carving station with beef, but I was more interested in the shrimp. Someone in my party can't eat chocolate and we had to ask several people if we could get waffles without chocolate sauce on top. Our waitress said it wasn't possible to get a plain waffle, but after waiting by the kitchen doors and asking a few other employees, we were able to get some plain waffles without chocolate sauce on top. The dessert table was impressive, with tons of options. With an endless boozy brunch of either Bloody Mary, champagne or mimosa, it definitely made things better overall. read more

Went for restaurant. Week and got the $47 , 3 course meal. Wish they had more than 1 salad in appetizer choice as everything else was shellfish , which we don't eat. Even a different salad option would have been appreciated. That said , the arugula salad was delicious and the choice of entree was excellent! I had the tuna and my husband had the catch of the day which was stripped bass, both excellent. I had the bread pudding which was wonderful and cappuccino and my husband the apple crisp, also good. Was surprised that the cappuccino was $9, but that's the way things are now. There is valet parking or you can park yourself! There was a big wedding going on but still adequate parking . The view on the water is spectacular. A very special setting ! There is an outdoor deck on the water during warmer months. Service was very good, water filled up regularly. The location is really nice. It's on the water. The food doesn't taste bad, but the service is slow, drinks are weak, staff is not attentive and your food won't come out right and they won't tell you until it's delivered if that... Don't expect management to make you feel valued or treat you with respect. They will gaslight you and be dismissive of their service and kitchen errors. I came back to this establishment after a single visit with a bad experience four years ago, hoping for the best and left more than disappointed. We went to Captain Bill's tonight. I had given him My Husband a gift card for Christmas time to try it. Let's go for the first appetizers, calamari and mussels and wonton crab and shrimp. Not terrible but not the greatest. I had a French onion soup. absolutely delicious My Husband had a seafood bladder broiled. It was like it was steamed. I had a linguine with shrimp and lobster very fishy not the greatest we had a nice bottle of wine and for dessert we had Keylime pie with coffee coffee was terrible but what I will say is we had the most amazing waitress I came in not in after a very hard day and she totally turned it around loves her! Don't think I'll be returning for the food, but I might stop by to have a nice drink at the bar and some soup and maybe hang for a while little bit disappointing but all in all it was a good night thank you to our waitress, you're good at what you do we hope we tipped you appropriately. First off beautiful water view, will definitely come back in the summer. I was invited to a colleague's celebration tonight at Captain Bills after work. Our small party was entertained upstairs in a private section. There was a small bar with beer, wine and soft drinks and a lovely buffet of potatoes, roasted vegetables, penne a la vodka, pasta salad, fruit platter, roasted chicken, salmon, and a small serving station for beef and I believe another meat. We had a good time here with our group of 6! We wanted outdoor dining, and it was disappointing we couldn't get guaranteed outdoor dining. But we did take their advice and got there at 5 to get one of the two outdoor dining tables that accommodates 6. They were cool about our lingering for quite some time and we didn't feel rushed which was great. The service was friendly and attentive. The view/ambiance with the water and boats was great. Food wise I had the scallops which were a good size. They came with potatoes and vegetables. My husband got the grilled swordfish which he also enjoyed. We shared the fried calamari which were good/standard. They charge more for credit card vs cash which seems a little tacky but I guess it incentivizes regulars to bring cash. The parking lot is also valet or pay only unless you park on a side block nearby. Good summer spot overall though, just a bit pricey for what it is. read more

I delivered floral arrangements (from Dinda Florist, Farmingdale) to Capt. Bill's for scheduled events, wedding receptions from 1983 to '93. The venue was always spotless, the event staff (I wish I remembered their names) were incredible and Luchia (sp?) was always wonderful to deal with. There was one beautiful girl on the event staff who always engaged me. That was over 30 years ago though. Think I missed the boat.....! I'd love yo visit for a meal. I was fortunate enough to attend an event here last week. I can't say enough good things about the service we were given throughout the afternoon despite our group being extreme "talkers!" The room we had was beautiful as was the beautiful view of the water! I could have eaten for days with the delicious food they provided. I hope to come back if I am in the area again as I tried everything and nothing on my plate dissatisfied. There were veggies galore, pasta galore and perfectly cooked turkey and beef. Came back (with a little delay) and took our orders. Appitizers were served in reasonable time. Shrimp Tempura was super good, tender and a flavorful dip. Shrimp cocktail was terrible. 5 very large shrimp, but were chewy and not worth the $20. Server didn't ask how the apps were. For dinners, we had the Surf & Turf, which must be one of their best meals, because it was outstanding. Short ribs and scallops over mashed potatoes with veggies in a rich, brown gravy. The Crusted Grouper was outstanding as well. Nice piece of fish, cooked perfectly. The LI Flounder was also very tasty and a huge helping. The blackened swordfish special was also said to be very good. A few comments: 2 of the meals were prepared incorrectly. The Surf & Turf was supposed to be GF, but was served with fried onions on top. That's just not an acceptable mistake. The Grouper was requested without Leeks or onions, but was served with both. The server quickly replaced the meals and the new meals were clearly made fresh (not fixed). If it's a preference, not that bad. When it is a severe allergy... This was to be our first party outing of the summer and the first since the pandemic restrictions were abated. We were celebrating a family member's birthday and a much needed put-the-pandemic-behind-us party. My wife and I arrived promptly at the designated time but were asked to wait until the table was ready. Not a good sign. After our wait, we were informed that the a segment of our party had already arrived and was seated. Another faux pas. After being seated; bay side, and I mean: near the railing, put your hand over the deck and touch the water, bay side; at our table, the waitress arrived for our drink order. Since we were still waiting for others to arrive, we explained our predicament to the waitress who brought us two bottles of chilled Ferrarelle mineral water and the menus, leaving us with: "No rush, take your time." She was not kidding! The water was cold and the view from our table was stupendous. The table talk was lively and we hardly noticed that it had been a half hour to the reappearance of the waitress. My hopes were high despite the first few slights. Fortunately, the remaining guests took their seats just in time to order with us. For dinner, I ordered the "Broiled Seafood Platter" and the house Moscato. My wife ordered the filet mignon and vegetables. The steak was cooked to my wife's liking and the size of the entree was commensurate to its price. The house Cabernet she ordered was also to her liking. Finally, the portion of steak was so much that I too enjoyed a tasting. I am very glad that I ha! To reciprocate, I asked my wife to join me in the fish entree. Regrettably, the fish entree was not as bountiful as the steak platter. My order consisted in three nice sized scallops, two large shrimp, and a piece of filet of soul. The fish was cooked to perfection: the scallops and shrimp firm but not chewy and the soul flaky, however, there was no punch to the taste of the fish. It was bland and uninspiring. The steak, on the other hand, had been seasoned and it's hint of Gorgonzola cheese sauce was just enough to provide the zing necessary to bring out the flavor of the steak. If you enjoy a good, fresh seafood meal, and do not mind broiled equating to bland, then the "Broiled Seafood Platter" with the House Moscato is a sure bet. On the other hand, the filet mignon is a good choice if you enjoy a well cooked steak with a hint of zest. Another dear friend at the party seemed to enjoy his swordfish. Upon my return to Captain Bill's this may be the dish that I chose. We brought our own birthday cake for the birthday person. Consequently, no one ordered dessert. However, we all ordered a round of cappuccini and one espresso. Regrettably, I found the cappuccino cold and uninviting. It's froth was not dense nor creamy and it lacked a hearty espresso flavor. Probably serves me right for ordering a cappuccino after noon. If in the mood for a hearty meal where the fish is fresh - and possibly bland - but the steak is perfectly cooked and seasoned, all in the wonderful atmosphere of a seaside restaurant, then I suggest Captain Bill's. The price to food ratio is excellent, the selection of entrees is very good and the wine menu is appropriate for the menu. I believe that every restaurant is to be given a second chance, especially one with a magnificent bay view. Therefore, my next visit to Captain Bill's will include American coffee and "Chocolate Mountain Cake." read more
