Wish I could review the food but didn't have a server who seemed to care. We arrived on a beautiful sun- drenched Labor Day about 1 pm . Took a bit to get the hostess to notice us, as she was busy serving tables. First red flag. Once she was able to assume her hostess duties she passed us off to the server, who sat us at a lovely outdoor table. After that she disappeared, when she returned she took the drink order from the table behind us. I thought perhaps she would take our order too or at least show some recognition that we were sitting there. No such luck. We waited 25 minutes in hopes she - or someone- would notice us. Never happened. We left and no one even noticed. Too bad, we are not kids and tip well. Her loss and a big management problem. I am so excited this restaurant is expanding and renovating. My family and I went for a NYE dinner and the service was phenomenal. Although we missed the NYE celebration, the staff still treated us well and made sure we had a great night. Everyone had a phenomenal meal which means a lot because my dad himself is a chef so he is very picky when eating at other restaurants. Finally, the decor was very cozy and clean which we all appreciated. The waitress told us they would be closed because they plan to expand their outdoor seating so I'm very excited to see how Vern comes back in the summer! read more

Place ain't it. Check the $20 veg platter that's described as mixed roasted vegetables and cheeses served with hummus.... What you'll get. A couple carrots and celery sticks, two broccoli florets that will leach its rancid flavor into the rest of the dish, some cherry tomatoes, some government cheddar cheese, three little slices of mozz, pita, and a spoonful of hummus they spread over a mound of shredded lettuce to make it look like more than it is, and not the mention making it become impossible to scoop into the pita because it's now all mixed up and you can't have hummus without their nasty shredded lettuce. Oh I almost forgot because of ALL this wild variety, yes there were a few thin slices of roasted squash. I threw the majority of it right in the trash since it all tasted like three weeks ago old broccoli. The mozz was good cuz it's mozz and of all things didn't taste like old broccoli somehow. I am extremely disappointed and disturbed by my experience at this restaurant and, even more so, by the complete lack of professionalism in how management handled the situation afterward. At the end of our meal, I intended to leave our waitress a generous $30 tip. I handed her two $20 bills and asked her to give me $10 back and keep the rest as her tip. To my shock, she accused me of giving her two $10 bills instead of two $20 bills. Because there was a security camera positioned directly over the area where this occurred, I immediately asked management to review the footage. I was assured that the cameras would be checked, that the matter would be addressed, and that someone would contact me. I provided my full name and phone number and trusted that the restaurant would handle the situation professionally. That never happened. I never received a phone call, an update, an apology, or any explanation whatsoever. What makes this experience even more troubling is that my party and I were the only African American customers in the restaurant at the time, and we were the only customers who were questioned and accused of providing incorrect payment. While I cannot know anyone's intentions, the experience left me feeling singled out, embarrassed, and deeply uncomfortable. Mistakes and misunderstandings can happen, but ignoring a customer's serious concern after promising to investigate it is completely unacceptable. The lack of accountability, communication, and professionalism shown by both the staff and management has ensured that I will not be returning, and I believe other customers deserve to know about this experience. read more

The atmosphere was not Caribbean either. There was live country music. The musicians were nice. The service was not good at all. Service was extremely SLOW. Arrived at 6:30 & NO APPS TILL 7:48.We had steamed clams which was delicious..another had a beet salad with little beets & well hidden goat cheese. Dinner was hanger steak marinated but chewy.I had grilled salmon which was good tho well done,salted potatoes & mixed veggies.Lobster tacos ordered with all sauces on the side-NO not the case.They did offer ANOTHER MARGARITA at that point not worth it.Another diner had surf & turf good lobster tail with an ok steak. As for dessert just cheesecake,red velvet & vanilla ice cream no menu just told to us.There was a live band playing that was good & this casual place seemed to have their regulars which were happy to sing along. This place is a little hidden gem off the beaten path. It's a cute spot with live music on the water. Parking lot isn't great but there was plenty of street parking. My first drink-the coconut blackberry martini sounded better than it tasted and it was quite heavy for a drink but the tropical depression was pretty good. I went with the calypso shrimp tacos and a side of truffle fries for dinner. They were not bad, could have used a bit more flavor on the tacos and a little crispier for the fries but over all not a bad meal for $60 with a nice ambiance to go with it. read more

One of the worst restaurant experiences I ever had. 6 of us went tonight to celebrate my daughter's birthday. Made reservations early in the week only to get there and not even having my name on the list of reservations. We had to wait to be seated and that's when the worst part started. Waited at least 15 minutes for menús only to get them after one of ladies got ip and complained to one of staff. She was told that they were short staffed and someone will come soon. We finally get a waitress (very nice) to come to the table and take our drink orders. We waited about 20 minutes for the drinks. We put in the appetizers order and main meals at the same time. Had to wait around 45 minutes for the appetizers to come which were fried calamari and coconut shrimps. They were really good. After around another 45 minutes our main dishes came. I ordered cheeseburger and sweet potato fries, well done. Once I cut into the burger it was bleeding and that completely took my appetite away. Waitress had the manager come by and asked if I wanted a new burger made or something else. I told them that there was no need because I had lost my appetite. They did took it off the bill but it still left a very bad impression and I and the rest of the group would never go back there. I understand that you can be short staffed but to do it on a hot summer night at a restaurant that sits on the water is totally unacceptable. The Vern Restaurant and Bar is an amazing waterfront bar to have a nice and cozy family dinner at. Personally I have eaten there 3 times and every single time the food was great. I got the Calypso Calamari and honestly it was probably the best calamari I've ever had. The waitress who served me was very kind and social she was also very pretty. Came to this restaurant to have a drink with my sister. We walked in with our chipper selves and were barely greeted. I asked if we can sit outside. She told us there is an outside bar. No direction. We found our way. Small bar no biggie. But at the outside bar we were looked at and never greeted. The bartender outside somehow was able to ignore us and went inside to sit on her phone at the bar with the first girl. We stood outside waiting for almost 10 min until we decided to just walk out. Same as the gull. They have a waterfront spot and don't know how to run it. They say they serve boats but everytime we go no one comes out to the boat to give a menu or take an order. Everytime we have to go inside to get a menu or someone to come. Then when you order a drink they take 25 mins or longer to bring it. Lame. Great spot but again poorly run. read more

An easy to miss restaurant next to a marina in West Babylon. Visited one night as we were the only customers at around 6:30pm. The owners from Trinidad sat at the bar with no greeting whatsoever. Even the mom they named the restaurant after. Very unfriendly and antisocial. Food, presentation was okay food was bland, very basic, nothing stands out.. I ordered the most popular items. Nothing was worth the money charged,and the food was mid. They have to at best work on their social skills. Restaurant is not inviting and the food is nothing to run home cheering about. We've been here a couple of times recently and the experience was consistent. The first time was a midweek lunch. The food was good but we the service was bad. Chalked it up to a busy time and decided to try again. We gave it another shot on a slower day for a later lunch and coincidentally had the same server. He is a nice kid but very slow and forgetful. Basic things like asking for plates for appetizers, cutlery, napkins, condiments, water had to be done more than once and most came incomplete. Not sure if it is the place or the kid but there didn't seem to be any type of manager overseeing things. The lunch menu is limited, basic but okay. They do have Happy Hour but only at the bar. A little strange at a very casual place with outside tables and a second dockside bar, but it is what it is. This place has potential but needs better management. read more

Came here for the first time with some friends for dinner and drinks. Took about 30-40 minutes to even get our dirty martinis which were definitely not dirty martinis. When we asked the manager what was in them, she couldn't tell us. Our apps took another 30min while we waited for new drinks. We originally wanted swell south however it was hopping and there wasn't a shady spot for us since she had her 8 month old with us. We figured hey let's try Vern. I said to her I've never been here so I can't say if it's good or not. I don't think I would go back. And it's not because the staff isn't nice. Our server was great however I don't think she told us her name but that's neither here nor there. She was very personable and efficient. I ordered the house salad. It didn't even come with dressing. I find that odd. I asked what dressings there were and I got the ranch. She got the lobster roll, not sure what she thought of it. But no dressing offered. A corona 8 bucks. What?? First off, we had a busser greet our table and take our order.. def was awkward having a teenager take our order at this more "elevated" restaurant now. Apps were good- had the crab mango salsa and clams. Entrees - chicken fingers and fries for our son, I had grilled salmon - very good. Linguini with shrimp and scallops for hubby were bland - came out cold and scallops were super undercooked! Had to send it back - they took it off the bill. Also- entrees took a long time to come out and they weren't busy at all. They gave us a complimentary piece of red velvet cake for the mishap, but unfortunately I don't see us returning. I have been going to Vern for the last two years and I have to say every time I go I have a great experience. The Vern wings are the best in town and the view on the water is second to none. The vibes there are immaculate with live music and boats pulling up every 10 minutes. The shrimp and scallop pasta is amazing and the NY strip steak is cook to perfection every time. The staff makes you feel right and home and I recommend anyone in the area to give this restaurant a shot, you won't be disappointed! read more

Tried this new restaurant Saturday night. I used to go to this restaurant when it was the Gull. The new owners changed very little of the floor space and put a new coat of paint on the interior. The staff is completely new and it shows. We arrived and waited for a hostess to seat us. She was clearly confused to what her job was, which was to greet costumers. These are growing pains. The exterior decks look great with new tables at the dock. I ordered the Shrimp and Scallops over linguine with a red wine sauce. I never tasted any wine or tomatoes, it was lukewarm warm and bland. My wife had the duck and said it was good, however the potatoes were barely warm. We will try this place again in the near future and see if they work out the flaws. read more
