And the appetizers were fairly delicious. We had the fritters, which were among the best we had in the keys. My daughter also wanted to try both soups. Lobster bisque was OK but the stone crab chowder was a delight. Definite must. But the entrees were a relative bust. Two of us tried the famous fish sandwich, which isn't much to look at (see photos from others). The cook on the fish was technically perfect but the food was all pretty bland. Reminded me of a tuna melt. My son tried the jalapeño encrusted grouper. Yes it had jalapenos on it (see pic) but even those were bland. No spice. No strong flavors, although technically well cooked. If I didn't have taste buds, I'd give it 5 stars. Alas, I do, and can't honestly recommend this place despite how much I liked everything else about this place. This restaurant was soooo good!!! I loved every part of it. My boyfriend and I randomly chose this restaurant because it was near our Airbnb and it WAS AMAZING!! The tuna sashimi and shrimp kaboom appetizers were fresh and delicioussss. Not to mention, I was craving a fried snapper and they exceeded my expectations with the freshness and flavor of the fish. The key lime pie was the BEST I have ever had. It was so creamy and rich. The service was awesome and everyone was so sweet. Since the new owners Craig's has improved dramatically . The ambience is friendly and very clean. The service provided both at the bar and at the tables is excellent. I usually eat the Excellent Captains chicken but last night our family of 11 went to dine. I went fishing that morning and caught many mackerel. We had them prepare the fish fried, blackened, and jalapeño encrusted. Every preparation was fabulous as were the salad and green bean accompaniments. Really wanted to try this restaurant as we were heading back from the keys. Unfortunately the doors had pieces of paper taped to them that the business was closed from 12pm-1pm due to a meeting, but we could seat ourselves at the outdoor seating. One of the issues is that we showed up at 1:15pm and the meeting was still going on. The other issue is there was nothing telling me where the outdoor seating was - not that I would use it since it was pretty warm. Guess they didn't want the business. I would think that lunchtime may not be the best time to be closed for a meeting. Can't comment on the food, seeing as we left to find someplace else. read more

Captain Craig's doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food is worth the stop. We ordered the key lime pasta and the fried shrimp. The pasta was loaded with seafood and all was well cooked (scallops, fish, shrimp and calamari). The sauce was bright with fresh lime, and thick without being heavy. The fried shrimp were tender, plump and perfectly crispy. I would def go back. read more

We had some very fresh yellowtail snapper given to us by a very generous fisherman right off the boat. He recommended that we take the fish to Captain Craig's and they would prepare it for us. Our server was amazing, she knew who the fisherman was and gave us some suggestions about ways to have it prepared. Some of the yellowtail was sautéed with simple, lemon butter, there was a jalapeño crusted preparation as well as Captain Craig's special presentation. The fish was amazing and I must admit I was a little baffled by the jalapeño crusted description, but it was the best fish I have ever had! We sat outside in the small, simple courtyard and perfectly taken care of by the staff. Highly recommend going to Captain Craig's with your catch. If you're not a fisherman or lucky enough to have a generous fisherman, give you some fish they have plenty of fresh options available for you. read more

My husband and I just finished one of the best seafood dinners in a long while! We had select 2 dinner platters. I had shrimp and I pd $2 extra to have the yellow tail snapper. My husband had the Mahi and Shrimp. We also enjoyed the most tender fried calamari we ever had for as an appetizer, It was delicious!! On my platter I got 3 nice size pieces of snapper and 3 jumbo and I mean jumbo shrimp. Each were crispy and fried to perfection. The service was great too! We were visiting the area for spring break this week and thought the menu looked good. We passed by the location on accident as it doesn't stand out. It's not a super fancy place, which we liked. However, the food was most excellent and our waiter was fantastic! I enjoyed the grapefruit salad with tuna. The tuna was cook perfectly! My son recently found out he had a shellfish allergy and it was hard to find a restaurant that offered fish without cross contamination with shellfish. The waiter helped him find something he could eat, and he thoroughly enjoyed the Tavernier fish sandwich. My daughter got the shrimp scampi, and my husband got the snapper. After a good part of the day spent at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, my wife and I were looking for a good lunch place for a late lunch. We focused our search in Tavernier and Islamorada since we planned on heading out to Robbie's afterwards to feed the pelicans...I mean the tarpons. Yelp highly recommended Captain Craig's so we tried it. The place befits a "hole in the wall" description with its nondescript exterior. Inside was actually quite spacious and sparsely decorated with nautical kitsch. Upon entering, we were greeted and told to find a table we wanted. We were presented the menu and the server informed us of the day's fresh catch, mahi mahi, grouper and some other fish I can't remember. I ordered the catch of the day (mahi) prepared blackened which came with one side, mashed potatoes. My wife ordered a cup of their stone crab chowder ($5) and shrimp po' boy ($14). The chowder was really good! My wife liked the huge shrimp on her po' boy, well prepared and not rubbery. She loved the kaboom sauce drizzled over the shrimp and said the bread seemed fresh. My dish was OK...thought the fish was fresh and well prepared (not overly generous portions) but the lone side of OK mashed potatoes (not garlic mashed) didn't have quite the value for $24. I thought the dish could've been much better if it came with grilled mixed vegetables and a choice of seasoned rice or garlic mashed potatoes. All in all, not a bad experience but thought the value (at least for the catch of the day) was lacking. Lunch for 2 with tip came out to just over $54. read more
