Square Grouper Bar & Grill was the perfect last stop on our way home from the Keys! I had been searching all over for a great Key lime martini, and this one absolutely exceeded my expectations. It was perfectly balanced--tart, sweet, smooth, and strong without being overpowering. It was exactly what I had been hoping to find. Our bartender, Megan, made the experience even better. She was incredibly sweet, attentive, and genuinely friendly from start to finish. Since my friend was driving and didn't want alcohol, Megan made her a Key lime margarita-style mocktail that was absolutely delicious and so refreshing. It made my friend feel just as included in the experience, which we really appreciated. The service was outstanding from everyone we encountered. From the host who welcomed us to the team serving our food, everyone was warm, kind, and attentive. Our waters were refilled multiple times without us ever having to ask, and we always felt well taken care of. We ordered the buffalo shrimp, which came out hot, fresh, crispy, and packed with flavor. To finish, we shared the Oreo cheesecake, and it was the perfect ending to our meal. Megan checked in on us throughout our visit, making sure we were enjoying everything, and her genuine hospitality really stood out. My favorite spot this whole trip! My boyfriend and I are on our first weekend getaway together. We decided our last dinner in town would be here. Our friend Bubba highly recommended it, saying "square grouper slaps." If you know him, you know that is extremely high praise. Let me tell you, square grouper does indeed slap. We were seated on the patio, facing the marina. We got to watch a magical sunset as we literally stuffed ourselves stupid with a variety of insanely yummo seafood. We got the coconut shrimp, portobello fries, scallops, and the tile fish, all per the amazing Ari's recommendations. Did I take any pictures NO I was enjoying a wonderful evening with my yummy man. They were all absolute wins. I've never had coconut shrimp before, and these were absolutely delightful- tender and tropical, which is not a flavor I thought I would enjoy but was happy at that uno reverse. The portobello fries were crisp and juicy?? And meaty from the mushroom?? Idk man a bitch was into it I ate them all. My scallops were divine- they came with this pork belly and sweet potato hash and just pleasured every tastebud with every bite. His tile fish was good, it was crispy and gorg. He ate the whole thing so fast, while commenting in between bites how much he was enjoying it. We also got the key lime pie (mine) and the brownie (his). It was literally my favorite key lime pie of the whole trip, it was so good. We couldn't finish the desserts and took them home, I'm really excited to have them as the best midnight snack of my life. I love all the square groupers in the keys. It's been a few years since I've been to the Islamorada location. I feel like this visit was even better than my last time. Of course I know to go early because the wait gets really long. But while you're waiting, you can hang upstairs at the cocktail lounge, which also has a great happy hour. Once our table was called for dinner we went back downstairs and sat inside to enjoy the air-conditioning. My friend ordered the almond encrusted snapper, which was so delicious. I ordered the wahoo special, which was absolutely incredible. I love how it was still rare like sashimi inside. That's the best way to eat fresh wahoo! My dish blew me away. Really nice restaurant with good food. I enjoyed the chicken Philly and side salad, especially after adding some mayo and peppers to the Philly. The Mrs loved her grilled chicken sandwich and shoestring fries. The coleslaw was a little different but also good. It's a little on the pricy side, but everything is in the Keys so just accept it. If you're a tea drinker note that there's no regular tea on the menu, just a passion fruit version. Our server was great and super friendly. The inside is mildly upscale for the area, but not fancy; I'm calling it upscale beachy. They have inside and patio seating, with a view that overlooks the marina/boat ramp. read more

This was our third time coming. I came specifically to eat the sesame seared tuna. We also had the fish dip. This place opens at 5 and when we arrived just before 6 we could not get a table or sit at the bar. We sat at a table outside in 93 degrees weather but the fans helped. Adriana V was our waitress and she was very attentive. My hubby ordered the fish dip which was very good. The jalapeños gave it a spicy bite. He also ordered the yellowtail with jasmine rice. He loved it. He said the portion was big enough. For dessert we had the brownie bread pudding à la mode. It was delicious. Food was great. My favorite is upstairs in the cocktail lounge where they have the raw bar. (Can't order food from raw bar if you're downstairs) The shrimp cocktail is the most delicious shrimp and comes with the remoulade and cocktail sauce. My fiancé ordered the yellow tail special which was delicious and I ordered the shrimp pasta which was good. We as well ordered the calamari that was delicious. It's a cool place to eat at since you're in the marina. Other than that, it's a tourist trap in my opinion. They are super busy so service was not great. Of the three things we ate, the only one I could recommend is the appetizer which was the flash fried conch, get extra wasabi and order it at the same time. We waited 10 mins for the server to bring us a side of it. I ordered the lobster tacos and 90% of it was filler with scraps of lobster. Don't waste your money. I did love the sweet potato fries. We tried the conch chowder which was a good soup but the conch was unnoticeable. For the entree we got the yellowtail with an Asian chili sauce. I really enjoyed the flavors of the fish and sauce together. Emily also made us several of the popular drinks which I found refreshing and not too sweet. At any rate, we headed to the Sunset Lounge that opens @ 4:20.We had seats at the bar and were frankly blown away by James, the bartender, the service, the food, it was all amazing. We started with the smoked fish dip - so good - the only thing is I wish the crackers were a bit more substantial. The dip was perfect with dry vodka martinis. I had a wedge salad with lardons and fresh shrimp. Yummy! Wayne had tuna tartare - and there wasn't any of it left. Superb restaurant in Islamorada! My family ate here for lunch this past weekend and really enjoyed it. We had a short wait- 10 minutes or so- and when we were seated our table had a great view of the water! Our waiter was able to accommodate us with 2 high chairs for our kids and there was a great kids menu available as well. I ordered the blackened mahi fish tacos with a side of caesar salad- everything was DELICIOUS! The location was so cool, right on the canal, with beautiful sunset views, lots of docked boats, and a sweet manatee family. They don't take reservations so we put our name in and then headed to their upstairs bar area for happy hour. They had some pretty good happy hour deals. Drinks were very good as well! A fun spot to hang out until our table was ready. Our table was ready in about 45 minutes. We were lucky and got an outdoor table. They have such a nice outdoor space. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We started off with coconut shrimp which was some of the best I've had. I then had a rice bowl with the catch of the day for dinner. We drove down from Marathon to check out Square Grouper in Islamorada, and it completely lived up to the hype. Got there around 4:45 on a Saturday and there was already a big line forming, always a good sign. The inside filled up fast, so the four of us grabbed seats at the bar (the outdoor seating looked really nice too, we'd definitely try that next time). We started with cocktails, edamame, and buffalo shrimp, all fresh and flavorful. Then came the mains: I had the blackened wahoo cooked medium rare, it was perfectly done and incredibly fresh, definitely one of the better pieces of fish I've had in the Keys. My girlfriend got the filet mignon sliders which were juicy, tender, and surprisingly filling. My dad ordered the almond-crusted grouper, easily the star dish of the night. Just a perfect balance of flavor and texture. My mom had the seared tuna, also super fresh and really well-prepared. What really stood out was the quality of the seafood, super fresh, well-seasoned, and generous portions all around. We've been coming down to the Keys for over 10 years and places like this are rare. This is one of our must-visits when we're down on Purple Island. They offer lunch (which may be new?) and it is fresh and flavorful beyond imagination. We ordered your spiciest bloody Mary's concocted by the lovely bartender Emily who was so knowledgeable and friendly. I ordered the cashew salad with garden greens, red onion, Gorgonzola, maple Dijon mustard and topped with sesame seared ahí tuna and some sesame crackers. This was UNREAL, in addition to my boyfriend's fresh catch of the day, Tilefish with rice and garden salad. Ok - let me start by saying that I love seafood. I have tried so many kinds and styles everywhere. I know a good seafood dish from a great one. I had one of the greatest fish dishes I have ever tasted last week at Square Grouper. It was wahoo al pastor which was listed and described as not quite sushi but maybe pan seared just a few seconds. Largely just warmed and seasoned after (maybe) a marinade, it was a joy. Not raw by any means but cooked to exactly the point of being cooked while keeping it moist and tender, it was a perfect fish. Food is absolutely delicious and so fresh! There is usually a big crowd there but it makes sense because the food is amazing. The wait is usually no longer than 5-10 minutes if you have to wait. Overall great experience and would definitely recommend going there again! read more
