I love all the square groupers in the keys. It's been a few years since I've been to the Islamorada location. I feel like this visit was even better than my last time. Of course I know to go early because the wait gets really long. But while you're waiting, you can hang upstairs at the cocktail lounge, which also has a great happy hour. Once our table was called for dinner we went back downstairs and sat inside to enjoy the air-conditioning. My friend ordered the almond encrusted snapper, which was so delicious. I ordered the wahoo special, which was absolutely incredible. I love how it was still rare like sashimi inside. That's the best way to eat fresh wahoo! My dish blew me away. Really nice restaurant with good food. I enjoyed the chicken Philly and side salad, especially after adding some mayo and peppers to the Philly. The Mrs loved her grilled chicken sandwich and shoestring fries. The coleslaw was a little different but also good. It's a little on the pricy side, but everything is in the Keys so just accept it. If you're a tea drinker note that there's no regular tea on the menu, just a passion fruit version. Our server was great and super friendly. The inside is mildly upscale for the area, but not fancy; I'm calling it upscale beachy. They have inside and patio seating, with a view that overlooks the marina/boat ramp. read more

We were here in April and very much enjoyed the third floor. Next time we will try the first despite all the warning signs access after 6 was not an issue when we were there. Service was excellent! It's a cool place to eat at since you're in the marina. Other than that, it's a tourist trap in my opinion. They are super busy so service was not great. Of the three things we ate, the only one I could recommend is the appetizer which was the flash fried conch, get extra wasabi and order it at the same time. We waited 10 mins for the server to bring us a side of it. I ordered the lobster tacos and 90% of it was filler with scraps of lobster. Don't waste your money. I did love the sweet potato fries. We were told to try Square Grouper from a truly knowledgeable source, who also helped us understand what a square grouper is. Who knew? At any rate, we headed to the Sunset Lounge that opens @ 4:20.We had seats at the bar and were frankly blown away by James, the bartender, the service, the food, it was all amazing. We started with the smoked fish dip - so good - the only thing is I wish the crackers were a bit more substantial. The dip was perfect with dry vodka martinis. I had a wedge salad with lardons and fresh shrimp. Yummy! Wayne had tuna tartare - and there wasn't any of it left. We toasted it all down with a lovely rose' and ended a perfect evening with picking up some awesome merch. The ambiance is excellent, the food never disappoints, and the service is consistently great whether you're seated at a table or at the bar. I do have my favorite people there, though! Emily is hands down the best bartender for brunch, and Chris is my go-to bartender for dinner--both in the main dining room. They always make the experience even better. We had a short wait- 10 minutes or so- and when we were seated our table had a great view of the water! Our waiter was able to accommodate us with 2 high chairs for our kids and there was a great kids menu available as well. I ordered the blackened mahi fish tacos with a side of caesar salad- everything was DELICIOUS! The view outdoors was great, and the kids were thrilled to watch the resident manatees. It was a chilly day, but they had heaters out to keep warm. The cocktails list was interesting; not your usual suspects, but I was super excited about the spicy options, especially jalapeño infused vodka.. I love a good kick to a fruity cocktail. The Spicy Peach Martini did not disappoint.. I had two in the time my husband finished one beer; that's how good it was. The beer list was pretty great too. Our kids ordered off the kids menu and the portions were good; the shrimp was a smaller portion than my son would have liked but he filled up on the fries. The grilled cheese was a larger portion and was also delicious. My husband and I each had a Square Grouper sandwich.. couldn't not get that on our first time here. My hubs had it blackened and I had it fried.. both were seasoned to perfection. I had the Caesar salad as a side (very good!) and my hubs had the chips and coleslaw, both of which he liked very much. Winner was the key lime pie (did plain with no berry drizzle). 5th one we've had down here- the filling was a great consistency and tartness with a crunchy graham crust. Loved everything about this place! We got lucky on parking which was a bonus too. They have a smaller lot, otherwise you could maybe find some street parking. This is definitely the place to be! The location was so cool, right on the canal, with beautiful sunset views, lots of docked boats, and a sweet manatee family. They don't take reservations so we put our name in and then headed to their upstairs bar area for happy hour. They had some pretty good happy hour deals. Drinks were very good as well! A fun spot to hang out until our table was ready. Our table was ready in about 45 minutes. We were lucky and got an outdoor table. They have such a nice outdoor space. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We started off with coconut shrimp which was some of the best I've had. I then had a rice bowl with the catch of the day for dinner. It was the best meal I've had in a long time. Everything was so fresh and flavorful. I can't say enough good things about their food. We drove down from Marathon to check out Square Grouper in Islamorada, and it completely lived up to the hype. Got there around 4:45 on a Saturday and there was already a big line forming, always a good sign. The inside filled up fast, so the four of us grabbed seats at the bar (the outdoor seating looked really nice too, we'd definitely try that next time). We started with cocktails, edamame, and buffalo shrimp, all fresh and flavorful. Then came the mains: I had the blackened wahoo cooked medium rare, it was perfectly done and incredibly fresh, definitely one of the better pieces of fish I've had in the Keys. My girlfriend got the filet mignon sliders which were juicy, tender, and surprisingly filling. My dad ordered the almond-crusted grouper, easily the star dish of the night. Just a perfect balance of flavor and texture. My mom had the seared tuna, also super fresh and really well-prepared. What really stood out was the quality of the seafood, super fresh, well-seasoned, and generous portions all around. We've been coming down to the Keys for over 10 years and places like this are rare. This is one of our must-visits when we're down on Purple Island. They offer lunch (which may be new?) and it is fresh and flavorful beyond imagination. We ordered your spiciest bloody Mary's concocted by the lovely bartender Emily who was so knowledgeable and friendly. I ordered the cashew salad with garden greens, red onion, Gorgonzola, maple Dijon mustard and topped with sesame seared ahí tuna and some sesame crackers. This was UNREAL, in addition to my boyfriend's fresh catch of the day, Tilefish with rice and garden salad. We then returned for the highly anticipated happy hour upstairs with a beautiful view starting promptly at 4:20 :D, served great mojitos and even better $2 oysters and $5 stone claw crabs. Ok - let me start by saying that I love seafood. I have tried so many kinds and styles everywhere. I know a good seafood dish from a great one. I had one of the greatest fish dishes I have ever tasted last week at Square Grouper. It was wahoo al pastor which was listed and described as not quite sushi but maybe pan seared just a few seconds. Largely just warmed and seasoned after (maybe) a marinade, it was a joy. Not raw by any means but cooked to exactly the point of being cooked while keeping it moist and tender, it was a perfect fish. If I could give this place 100 stars I would! Not only is this my absolute favorite restaurant in the keys, but it's one of my top in the whole state of Florida! We have never had anything short of an incredible experience at the Square Grouper. Everything from the coastal chic ambience to the beachy outdoor area, to the bathroom sinks and incredible details make each experience special. The food is to die for. Truly. The cocktail menu is also extensive! Some of our favorites and must-haves include the fish dip, grouper francaise, and scallops. You will never order wrong on their menu. We were welcomed by the friendliest hostess and elected to sit out on the patio as there was no wait outside an over an hour wait inside (due to a tropical storm), but we did not get wet at all despite the crazy wind thanks to their screens they put down to protect guests from the elements. Still had a view of the water! When it time came to order, they had a great selection of fun drinks and delicious appetizers. The grouper bites were among the apps we ordered and they were to die for! Definitely order some if they do not sell out fast!
