Okay so I left review Sunday night about purchasing XL crabs for 125.00 a dozen. Took back inside store because 5 to 4 crabs were light in weight. The manager asked me to go through bag and pull them out. I did then she said open. Mind you we were in the store standing at cash register. If course I said no give me my money back. She did with lips tight. Called and spoke with owner who started out the conversation saying what do you want to discuss? Who knew exactly what the problem the issue was because he had been brief in fact he actually called me back the other day and I wasn't available so I called him back today. After explaining everything to him he stated she said Megan his manager she offered to give me replacement crabs. And he also said someone one of the six people that was standing behind making at the time when I was complaining about the crabs it was just myself in the store agreed that she had stated she would replace my crabs. She did not stay right away that she will replace my crabs I assume she was cuz she asked me to pull the full crabs out of the bag however but to ask me to stand there and open up crabs in the middle of the store was ridiculous the owner I intern said to me that he was sorry. However it was nothing that he was going to do for me because he just would have replaced it for crabs and since I asked my money back there was nothing really to discuss but he was sorry. And basically their customer service is sorry he never took into an account that I use my gas and my time to go to his establishment passing other establishments that are much closer to my home to go to his. Therefore their customer service is sorry I will agree that their crabs are good if they are the proper crabs being sold for the price being charged. We spending $125 for a dozen of crabs there should be no question about size or taste or wait. I often go to this establishment to make purchase on crabs maybe at least four times this summer. I always purchase the biggest ones that they have available I never walk out of that store without spending over $100 for 12 crabs. However I am very glad that this incident happened because when I had the seven employees standing behind the counter and I stood on the other side alone because I went there alone I realize I have never seen a minority working in that establishment therefore on that cause alone and being treated so poorly as a customer I will never return. So folks take note get it some serious issues going on in that establishment. read more

This is an amazing crab place there are all sizes and I would totally recommend it it is beyond good (ps) make sure you don't have cuts.

I would have to say this is a real Crabhouse without the knowledge of what a real Crabhouse should be. However, I imagine the main classification scheme of such an establishment is based on Crabs - quality, quantity, and price. A+ for all three. We had a dozen large crabs and they gave us 6 more for a little extra. We added crab cakes and wings as an appetizer. The kids were happy, Back Fin Pale Ale flowed and the adults were happy, and the crabs were just awesome. A highlight of my trip. And I got out the door with reasonable monetary damages. Took a chance on this place and it did not disappoint. Came in at lunchtime with some coworkers for some crabs. We ordered 3 dozen and received an additional 6 for free with a special they were running. Crabs came out piping hot, seasoned well, and were very heavy. On top of eating crabs, the table split Chesapeake Bay fries, a crab pretzel, crab balls, one pound crab cake, and Chesapeake wings. All were delicious and had great flavor. Excellent food. While on vacation I read about this place in a loca mag. Didn't disappoint. It's a down to earth place. Fish market where you walk in then restaurant on through the door! Local crabs galore. The rest of menu was spot on also. My daughter ordered the scallops. Perfect! Just okay. There were 2 servers working the dining room who looked to be 16-18, either way, our server was timid and it detracted from the experience. For those who don't know, you have to walk past the main counter through a door to get to the dining room, kind of awkward. The dining room has a great wall painting of the Maryland shore and there were shelves lining the top of the walls holding different cans of of what I presume to be the types of seafood they use in the restaurant. The highlight, while not spectacular, was the food, although, I had a salad as one of my sides and the saucer they gave me the dressing in was almost as big as my salad...lame. Have ordered crabs from here a couple of times and they have been decent. I tried calling an Father's Day and the line was busy so I figured I would be there when they opened up. I was told they had 2 1/2 extra large dozen of crabs left so I ordered 2 dozen. I even repeated EXTRA LARGE to the worker and she told me yes. When I got home with my crabs they are definitely not extra large, at best they are MEDIUMS. I called to let them know that I paid $92 per dozen for these crabs and they are definitely not extra large. I was told "Dan personally checks the crabs by hand based on size and weight and it is a holiday so they are going to run smaller than usual". There was no apology, I wasn't told that maybe there had been a mistake, and no refund was offered. I was expecting better customer service when I am spending almost $200. I will not be spending another $1 at Dan's Crabhouse! I am only giving one star because you that is the minimum. read more

Got their buy 12 get 4 free special on medium crabs and some clam strips and scallops. The crabs were all good and heavy. The clam strips were bigger than most places. You could actually see, eat and taste it - compared to others where it's all breading and clam essence. The scallops were not bad either. We went here yesterday because our beloved Woodbine Inn doesn't sell crabs on Mondays as J & T is closed across the street. I had heard of Captain Dan's from a friend who lives in Sykesville and had gotten crabs to go before. She said they were on the smaller side but we decided to give them a try. I called around 12 and got the scoop - we could reserve crabs and when we arrived there was a table waiting with our name on it. The dining area is on the smaller side, with a few tables that seat 6 lining each side. There are booths and also tables with chairs. Yelpers labeled it as kid friendly which we hoped as we brought our 8 month old baby. Upon getting situated we sat behind an elderly couple who were definitely not pleasant. Our baby was eating and well behaved but still making audible sounds mainly because she loves puffs and quinoa of all things. My husband and I would switch off so the other person could eat. We went with another couple and got 1 dozen large crabs ($ 75), a lb and a half of steam shrimp with onions, cheese fries with bacon, and wings. My husband mentioned later that the wings were cold. They probably had been cooked first and maybe sat before they got to the table. The cheese fries were good and a large portion. The bacon wasn't crispy but more like chunks of pancetta. The website states that they are MD crabs. They were definitely smaller in size but heavy in weight. No mushy crabs and all tasted good except maybe one. I was glad they are local as most these days are typically flown in from Louisiana or even Texas. Our server Courtney was very friendly. It seemed like a younger staff there including the girls at the counter who also helped bus tables. I never saw captain dan or a manager but maybe they were in the back. Including beer our tab was $ 176. We gave a $ 40 tip in cash. I would go back again but I have to admit Woodbine Inn is my go to. Overall solid service and decent food. read more

The jumbo crabs are "OUT OF THIS WORLD". They are very good and filling. These are the best crabs that I have had all summer.

To be fair, I did not get the crabs. I didn't have the time. Many people have posted good things about the crabs. The oysters? Captain Dan's served me raw oysters with as close to no flavor as possible, but multiple small pieces of shell and some muddy stuff that I'm pretty sure would have come right off had they been rinsed correctly. The cooked oysters were hard and dry and hard and dry and also did not taste of oyster or ocean. read more

Ordered the morning (1 hour before opening) of Father's Day since the crabs appear to be running slower this season hoping for larges but they were already sold out as expected. Ended up with the mediums for a fair price and was not disappointed! They were heavy and very well spiced. The rush was crazy the entire day so I did see some upset people not happy with their wait times... but it's basically Christmas Day for crabs! Best steamed crabs around! Steamed to order, so no leftovers reheated like other places do. Great seasoning blend, they have their own. The staff is super friendly. You can eat in or carry out. I hate to knock a crabhouse based on quality of crab, because there's a big part of me that feels like crabs are, well...a crab-shoot. Maybe I'm just woefully undereducated about the art of crab catching, but doesn't a haul kind of just depend on luck of the draw (someone with better knowledge about this is quite welcome to drop it on me)? Case in point: the three dozen blues from Captain Dan's that we picked for hours in FIL's backyard on Memorial Day. Some were sweet and juicy and succulent with lots of delicious body and claw meat; some were fine; a couple were near-hollow with pasty, fishy meat. Captain Dan's fault? I dunno. The seasoning was good, tho, so maybe that's improved since Linn G. wrote her review over a year ago. These bad boys were literally encrusted with rock salt and Old Bay. And the steamed shrimp we also ordered were perfectly opaque and tender with just the right amount of special-blend seasoning as well. Prices seem reasonable here, too. Monday through Thursday crabs are $1.50 apiece (not sure which size, however; I'd assume the smalls). Other days crabs range from $2 - 6, depending on size. And Dan's will ship just about anywhere in the country in case you'd like to gift friends and relations with a taste of our beloved Chesapeake. Like our friend who learned the hard way never to order crab cakes in Ohio. read more

Just ordered a colossal crab cake platter and shrimp platter.. the food was TERRIBLE. The crab cakes are super small.. certainty not Colossal at all. Just regular over cooked crab cakes. Great little place tucked away in Eldersburg far from all the hustle and bustle of the city. Good quality crabs are hard to come by these days. Captain Dan's delivered high quality crabs that tasted great and were good sized. Prices are about what you'd expect to pay for crabs anywhere.. very reasonable. The rest of the menu is limited and I wouldn't come here for dinner unless I was planning on getting crabs. Would rate 5 stars, but I have to give 4 because our waitress was TERRIBLE. But, I can't penalize Capt's too much for that. I'll just make sure to avoid getting our lazy, lazy waitress next time I go back. read more

Visited last night with Mrs. P and was disappointed. We had two soft drinks, a cup of chowder, and two platters (captains catch and 1/2 crab cake, 1/2 shrimp). While the $45 total isn't terribly unrealistic for seafood for two, the serving size and quality didn't quite match up. The seafood chowder was good and worth getting. The crab cakes, which were fried rather than broiled, were significantly smaller and of far less quality than a number of other central Maryland places such as G&M, etc. (less crab, more filler). The fried shrimp were fine as were the clams. The fried oysters weren't fresh. Overall, quality and quantity really need to improve for the cost. Would've been an a three star (just 'meh') but only for the bill. read more

Saturday evening, relatively crowded. Seemed like an hour wait for a table. Fortunately, I was carrying out. I would've given five stars had the cream of crab soup been better. See below. We got a dozen Jumbo crabs (actually, they give you 14) which were completely excellent. Big, heavy, meaty. I called around noon and ordered the crabs to be ready for pick up between 6:30 and 6:45. Well, at 6:37, they handed the bag to me ... fresh and hot. Great service. Great crabs. Four of us each ate three and still had two left over. Yes, the crabs are expensive ... but compared to other crab places, they're a great value. First of all, I couldn't find Jumbos anywhere else. And one place had Extra Large for more money than 14 Jumbos at Captain Dan's. My only complaint was that they could've put more seasoning ... the seasoning was a bit light ... but they were still delicious and meaty and hot and fresh. As for the cream of crab soup, they're already at a disadvantage because I compare ALL crab soups to The Narrows Restaurant in Kent Narrows, MD. No other cream of crab soup is as good as theirs. So, if The Narrows is a 10, then Captain Dan's is a 5. Kind of creamy but not enough crab meat and it had a funny taste ... they use a spice for which I don't particularly care ... is it ginger? Or Chinese five spice? I can't quite place the taste. Regardless, it's nowhere near as good as The Narrows ... but nothing is. I will definitely return to Captain Dan's for crabs. read more
