First I would like to apologize for no photo of my delicious meal. I haven't eaten here in a few years but had a carving for fish so I decided to come for lunch and am glad I did. Wanting to make sure I got exactly what I was carving I took awhile to review the menu on the wall. The nice employee asked me in a polite way if I was a senior which I was and showed me the $5.99 Senior Menu. I was fairly hungry and she suggested the best deal would be to get the 2 fish and 2 sides then get a side order of 5 butterfly fried shrimp for $1.99 more. The drink was also included and the price of my meal was $9.04. After you order you just sit down and after a few minutes they bring your order with cocktail sauce and ketchup. There was also tartar sauce and malt vinegar available. Everything looked and tasted great. The place was very clean and had some enjoyable music playing . It's hit or miss. A friendly efficient staff. Food, however, and that's why I came. Shrimp could have been charcoal. Overcooked to the brown black stage and cold. Fries were limp and cold. Fish is generally good though. I know its a gamble when I go but I crave the fish because its like I had back home and most restaurants here don't fix it battered and deep fried. I actually had a frequent eater card almost filled when I got 2 bad meals in a row and stopped going there. A few years later I went back and they were out of regular fish and served swai (?) For crying out loud! Here's what you get with the 5.99 flounder, shrimp and fries meal. COLD hard "fries", a shriveled up paper thin puece of what they call "fish", 4 luke warm shrimp that could have been microwaved, and some hushpuppies. All served with a smile. 5 Stars for this Captain D's location. It was my first time dining at a Captain D's. I was in Deland and wanted to grab something quick so I could get back to Orlando. The staff was awesome, very patient with me as I asked about the different combos and what came in them. I ordered the 2 fish and 6 shrimp meal and added a piece of catfish and it came to just over 10 bucks with tax. Great deal in my book. I sat in the sparkling clean dining room and waited for my meal. She brought me the food on a non-disposable plate and it was all piping hot and crispy. Was happy I could dine inside! The fish was battered nicely and was so crispy crunchy delicious. Dipped in the malt vinegar, it took me back to my younger days at the other seafood fast food joint. The shrimp weren't overly breaded and were a nice addition to the meal. The fries were fresh as was the fried okra as a premium side. The hush puppies were indeed hush puppies (I never liked them and still don't) so people usually love eating at these places with me as they get my hush puppies. The catfish was a nice thick piece of fish with a different batter than the fish. I did like how everything was not in the same batter. Some fried platters have everything tasting the same. Both the manager and cashier asked me how I liked everything and on my way out, the cook was there too and I thanked all of them for a great meal. They were all so friendly. This location has declined tremendously. The parking lot needs some TLC, including the bumpy drive thru experience. Most times food is cooked to order but not so much anymore. They're either out of something or the work is horrible. For me, presentation is at the top of the "must be great!" list. My last experience was on Sat. The food was packaged so poorly. I couldn't leave without addressing the issue. Green beans liquid spilled over all other items . Breadsticks were stale, fish was soggy, fries were cold, rice was hard and dry. I used to plan a regular monthly (or more) visit to this location when in DeLand BEFORE COVID-19. I REALLY enjoy the affordable + TASTY fish meals, especially with the HEALTHIER menu of broiled/blackened fish/shrimp, salad + veg! Yum! I have a Rewards Card that I was informed today, is NO LONGER accepted at this location. With the Dining Room still closed, the ONLY order options are Drive-Thru or Take Out. When I arrived today, the Drive-Thru was backed up into the next door business parking lot. FYI THERE IS ONLY ONE PERSON WHO WAITS ON DRIVE THRU AND TAKE OUT!! If there's a long Drive Thru line, MY SUGGESTION IS TO GET IN IT! JESSICA (to be fair was a hardworker), WAS FOCUSED ON DRIVE THRU ORDERS OVER TAKE OUT. She couldn't multi task both. IT TOOK 25 Minutes from my arrival inside to RECEIVING my food order. I'm thankful the kitchen manager came out to help me get along with my day. This was my very first time eating at a Captain D's. Hard to believe, I know. I've always been a strong believer that seafood shouldn't be eaten at fast food joints. However, the captain of the D's has changed my mind! The one and only thing that was impressive about this place was the fish. I had the southern fried white fish and despite my fears, it wasn't fishy at all, and probably more importantly, no bones! I just couldn't get enough of it. This location lost a star due to their sides. I had the green beans and the cole slaw, both of which I didn't like. The cole slaw was entirely too sweet and the green beans were bitter and tasted old. Overall, not too bad! I think next time, I'll just order the fish. read more

Since there aren't any Captain D's anywhere near me in Orlando, we stop here every time we're headed north. The service is great, the food is very good, and the price is very friendly. This place is several cuts above your usual fast food joint in many ways. Any comparison to the other fried fish chain will make the other one look bad, so I won't go there. You should go here if you crave some quick, inexpensive fried white fish. They have shrimp and chicken too, but fish is what they're about. The place is clean, and its easy to get in and out. I pulled up to the drive through and was told to wait a moment. No problem. I waited almost ten minutes. I would have pulled away but everything in DeLand closes early so this was one of the few places open. I was told to go ahead with my order. I placed the order and got to the part where I was asked what side id like with it, oh and by the way our debit machine is down it'll be cash only. While this might not be the best place to bring a date, it's still a good place to eat if you're craving battered fish, and shrimp. I love the 3 piece battered fish with an added side skewer of shrimp. If you're really hungry or want to explore, they have sizable combo meals that have a little of everything. They also have lobster bites (seasonal) that I really love. My wife and I have eaten here many times. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. I visit this store at least once a month. The food is usually hot and fresh. The service is pretty good also. The lobby does tend to always need a quick wipe down, but it isn't filthy. The restrooms are clean as well. The fish is crisp and absolutely delicious. They do have grilled offerings also. It's a reasonably priced way to enjoy a great seafood lunch. read more

Ah Captain D's! My wife is the one who introduced me to this place. I don't eat seafood, but she loves it and I love her, so I get the chicken strips. 4 strips, 2 hush puppies, and 2 sides come with the meal. Today, I opted for coleslaw and fried okra for a small upcharge. My wife got the 4 piece fish meal with hush puppies, coleslaw and fries. The wait was a little longer than usual today, but we'd come in on the tail end of a rush, so they had to cook our orders fresh. The girl who brought our food to the table was very nice and apologetic, but as I told her, I'd rather wait a bit longer for fresh, hot food. The chicken at Captain D's isn't like the fish. It's crunchy, southern style breading on the outside, with juicy all white meat inside. They were so hot today that I had to wait for them to cool a bit before eating them. The okra was also super hot and very tasty. I'm a fan of their slaw also, but my favorite part are the hushpuppies! these little fried nuggets of joy and love are what keep me hooked. My wife's fish looked delicious, if you like fish, and were hot and fresh also. The batter was crispy and the meat was moist and flaky according to her. Her fries were also fresh from the fryer, which as everyone knows, are the best time to eat fries. The lobby needs a good wipe down, but the bathroom was clean. Since 2001, I have been bringing my family in to this Capt. D's location twice a week. We always order two 10 Pcs fish and usually a couple extra sides. The restaurant changed for the worst in 2016 and I have complained over and over and written reviews but nothing changes. The only thing that changed is we maybe miss the fish enough every couple of months to come in and try it again. Everyone I know loves the food but hates the place. We all love the food but do not come because of the rude staff that constantly tell customers the food isn't cold or you can hear them screaming in the back F this and F that and who do they think they are referring to customers that complain to the manager about the rude service or cold food. Today I started out in drive thru but after 15 minutes I came inside. As I entered, the tall black female manager was yelling at a customer saying, she (cashier) was the only one working drive thru and the front counter. Is this not the manager's job to schedule appropriately for the flow of business? In what county does a manager of a business expect to keep a job treating customers like this over and over again? Why is this same manager still working here? Every time I have come to the restaurant she is screaming a customer and dropping F Bombs so load in the back the whole dining room can hear. The whole dining room was talking about her treating the customer like he was in the wrong for complaining about cold food. She went to the window and got the customer something and said it was not cold. Then she told the cashier, she was not replacing his corn. I once called to complain from the drive thru lane and when I was suck in the drive thru lane for almost an hour and was told there was nothing they could do and I would just have to wait and was hung up on. Today sitting in the Front I answered Google questions about Capt. D's. 38 mins I waited and had to listen to all the profanity along with the entire dining room complaining about it. Eventually minding my own business just sitting on the bench, the manager yells at me, "What are you still doing here? I put your order up 10 minutes ago." She then went to the drive thru window got my bag and put the Cole slaw in it and handed it to me saying, "And it is not cold." I live 10 minutes from Capt. D's. I brought the order into my wife who started to dish it and she said, "It is stone cold". She said "You better call and complain". Then she said, you are going to be pissed. They did not put any hush puppies in again. We love the food at Capt. D's but not the atmosphere. Please we would love to be regular customers again but not with the current managers. read more

I have eaten at Captian D's for years, even visited the original on Nashville. I have even went to the airport and flew my private plane 150 miles one way just to eat at Captain D's. There are many reasons I love this Captain D's: The menu has a great variety and there are always new offerings. The food is prepared quickly and it has always been fresh. I also appreciate the grilled fish options and healthy sides. If I am needing a quick fried food fix, the fish & shrimp are lightly breaded. The employees are always very pleasant and greet guests as they come in and when leaving. It is very clean inside & out as I have seen employees picking up trash in the parking lot prior to opening and sweeping. The prices are very fair and they always have coupons!! Ordered a Great Little Fish Sandwich plain and a drink. Line was long and they were short of help, but that's o'k. I got my sandwich, but it had everything on it. I took it back and told the pleasant looking Negro girl with the blond hair that I had ordered it PLAIN.
