As soon as I walked in Wade sat my family and I down as fast as I walked in. Trish is the server that took care of my family and I and she was super attentive. I ordered half of rack of ribs, with Mac and cheese with brisket, tater tots and cornbread. My food was soooo delicious and it was like about $15. This restaurant catered our wild wild west charity event last Saturday. I took pulled pork and chicken with macaroni and cheese and potato salad as sides. The meats were tender enough for catered food. The pork could have been pulled more as there was a chunk of meat that was hard to cut. The chicken was better and more flavorful. I tried the smokey BBQ and mustard sauces, and I liked the smokey one better even though it wasn't that spicy. The mustard sauce tasted a bit weird. The mac and cheese reminded me of the instant version, but it was still passable. The potato salad was more enjoyable with nice chunks of potatoes in the mayonnaise and seasonings. I also enjoyed the ice tea as it was refreshing before taking a turn on the mechanical bull at the event. The service was friendly as they filled our plates with the food, and even took out the plates when done. Since this was at a venue, I can't comment the inside of the restaurant. As you can see from my prior review, Sonny's bbq reached out and wanted to speak to me personally. I emailed them as requested, detailing my experience. I received an email response from the general manager of the Deland store, inviting me to return for a complimentary meal. This email was received and I bookmarked it, but did not respond, as we were out of the country. During our absence, I also received a phone call and voice message from the general manager, inquiring if I received their email and their offer. At that point, I emailed back because I could see that they were serious about making things right for me. I visited with my mom on a busy Friday night. We were sat immediately, and our waittress was around to take our beverage order. We had two waters and I asked for a cocktail menu, which they did not have. I have encountered specialty cocktails at the Sonny's in Apopka, so I asked for a boozy lemonade. We explained the phone call and email invitation to come for a Pick 4 Feast - which we knew was a lot of food. We had previously ordered it for four people, and now there were just two of us! However, mom said my dad was asking for and expecting leftovers, and my husband would be home the following day and would love the leftovers for his lunch, so we ordered everything to come to the table The pick 4 includes four meats; we chose the sliced pork, sliced brisket, bone in chicken dark meat, and the st louis ribs, as recommended by our server. For our sides, we chose the potato salad, coleslaw, beans, broccoli and mac and cheese. We got half garlic bread and half cornbread. My boozy lemonade was tasty. In fact, so tasty that i am not sure there was any alcohol in it? It was a strawberry lemonade with a sugared rim. On the bill, it was only $6, so I'm not sure if it truly was boozy? But i did enjoy it. The apopka Sonny's has some sort of bourbon lemonade which is awesome. That's where I got the idea. Anyhow, the food took a bit to come out but we were not worried because our server came by to check on us and mentioned they were working on it. There was a large birthday party in the side dining room - probably thirty people - having a wonderful time. We appreciated the heads up and we were fine to wait. Our food was brought to us by someone else, and in three trips. First, all the meats and the breads and some sides. Then, a couple more sides. We started eating and forgot that the coleslaw never arrived. So that arrived after we reminded our server and requested that one to go, since we were so full. The bone in chicken is awesome, I would recommend it. The sliced pork is better than the pulled pork and the sliced brisket is also better than the chopped brisket, in our opinion. This was my first time getting the st Louis ribs - i think i prefer the baby back better as they fall off the bone a little easier. I was so happy that the cornbread was served with butter! This was one of my complaints from the prior order - that the cornbread was so dry and there was no butter. This time, not only did we received salted butter, we also got their cinnamon sugar whipped butter! Holy cow that's delicious. I had no idea what I missed out on last time. This made the cornbread like dessert! Wow. Highly recommend that. The mac and cheese was better than I expected. Although last time we ordered the okra and did not receive it, we opted just to stay with the items that would not result in an extra charge, even though i'm sure they would have comped it. The coleslaw, beans and potato salad are favorites of ours. The broccoli was as described, just steamed. But it sure was nice to have something healthy on our plates!!! We took so much food home. Mom and I split it, so my dad and my husband would be happy campers. The manager, Wade, came by during our visit and got my name and said he wasn't exactly sure what the issue was that resulted in this comped visit, but he was glad we came in and he was sorry for our prior experience. I thought that was nice. I'm sure he was very busy with that birthday party and did not have a chance to refresh himself on my email and my review of the prior visit, which was the week of Monday, December 15. They offered us sauce to go and gave us plenty of containers to bag everything up. I would say this experience was pretty good. They were busy, so it's ok that the coleslaw got forgotten about a couple times. In the end, we got it. Our server was really nice and on the ball. Oh, I went to the ladies room and It was out of toilet paper. Another customer saved me. I notified the hostess, so hopefully she will keep a closer eye on that when they have busy nights. Afterall, it was a friday night. I paid for my drink and left a hefty tip. They deserve it. They have a small parking lot and a larger strip mall parking lot behind. Don't forget you can order ahead on the app and there are at least three parking spots for pick up orders. Give this place a chance - eat in person, that's best. read more

We had no idea this was a chain - but it sure hit all the marks of a chain restaurant. As for ambience, the ere was very little. Felt like a sterile cafeteria. Service was good. I did like our server! She was attentive and timely. As for the food - the appetizer was outta site! Fries with pork and a cream sauce atop - super delicious. It ended there. The bbq itself was dry. The presentation is seriously lacking. The amount of food was also not what you expect from BBQ. We had high expectations, not knowing it was a chain. We will not be back. read more

This is, by far, the best Sonny's we have eaten at. And we have eaten at many across the state. It's very clean, service is excellent and the pork and brisket sandwiches are very tasty. Listen! I'd sworn to never to try Sonny's because of a co-worker of mine that got sick from the chicken twice. Although that was a location down in Miami, I'd sworn off all Sonny's! However I am so happy that we stopped by here on the way back to Miami. Atmosphere: So first off, this particular location was either renovated or recently built. I am not from DeLand so I do not know but it looks nothing like the locations back at home. The decor was very nice. We haven't been here for quite a while (because we prefer Dustin's) but Last night we we r for dinner. My rack of baby back ribs must've been in the 'warmer' for about 5 hours. It was almost dry & quite chewy. Not soft & tender. I know now that I should've sent it back, oops. But the NERVE sending that out to the customer for $18.99. Very good bbq. Service was good when we picked up. Since we didn't eat in - I can't speak to the ambiance. My wife and I did take out and were very happy with our meals. Good quality bbq, flavorful, excellent sides - All of the things we tend to look for when getting bbq. We especially enjoyed their corn fritters. A couple of things that weren't our favorite - their sauces come prepackaged, which even though they might me "homemade" certainly didn't give it that feel and the pulled pork didn't have much char to it. The curbside & pickup window is ideal during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was one of the reasons I stopped by, it minimized exposure to the virus by not going inside the restaurant at all. A kind bartender took my order at the pickup window, asked me to stay at the curbside pickup parking spot & she'd bring me my takeout. I ordered the 2 combo. Waiter Gav++ got the order wrong. Gav** did not write the order down, and submits the wrong order to the kitchen. A pulled pork sandwich with fries turning into a pulled pork platter. I asked for Gav** to get me a bun and fix the mix up and we are good. Gav** gets me a bun that turns my pulled port platter into a pulled pork sandwich and fries.... which is what i ordered. I know how to make a sandwich. The only option given was to get another order from the kitchen and 'it will take a while'. My choices now are watch my wife eat while i reordered. She can eat while I wait. When my order comes, she watches while i eat. She waits for my correct order to come out, now hers is cold. I do not trust a 'reordered' meal from the kitchen. Meal was comped, but never saw the manager to discuss or resolve the issue. The waiter failed to take the order correctly and resolve the issue. Dry Rub Ribs - very tender nice smoke 4 bone lunch special Green Beans - I'd say southern style cooked in a little fat very tasty Mac & Cheese - it was okay at best needs some work Salad Bar - everything seemed fresh nothing over the top but good a little pricey for a side $3.99 with the meal. I'll make this short. It seems Sonny's has changed with time. It's not in any way like it use to be. The chicken use to have that nice seasoned smokey taste but unfortunately no more. I have been told everything is precooked and arrives frozen then heated as needed. Is this true??? It would explain not seeing stacks of wood by the smokers (if any) anymore. I did read your sign on the wall....If it's not Smoking out back....It's not a Sonny's. Maybe you forgot to take that down! Service? Not worth tipping that's for sure. Friends and I came here after an event at Stetson University for dinner. I remember when it was a Friendly's and while I do miss it, I'm glad a BBQ joint replaced it. We had about 10 people in our group so one warned them of us coming there and they gladly sat us in the back area with tables pushed together. Normally I'd pig out but for this trip I decided to go easy. I got the Beef Brisket with broccoli and green beans and several large glasses of sweet tea. I was a little disappointed that the green beans were the ones that were out of a can along with its juice. I've been spoiled by the taste of fresh veggies. The broccoli was steamed and could've used some seasoning. I thought about asking for butter but that wouldn't have helped it. The beef brisket was good but the middle of each piece was on the dry side for me. The sauces helped out a little. I didn't try the cornbread muffin because I gave it away.
