Hunters & Gatherers is an absolute gem! We each ordered a different sandwich--the Woodland & Rich steak sandwich and the H&G BLT--and split them. Honestly, that's the best way to do it because you get to experience two incredible sandwiches in one meal. Both were packed with flavor, made with high-quality ingredients, and far exceeded our expectations. The fries were cooked perfectly--crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. They also serve a house-made tomato ketchup that's a little sweeter than traditional ketchup, and it's a fun, unique touch if that's your style. Service was just as impressive as the food. The staff was genuinely welcoming, attentive without being overbearing, and checked in at all the right times to make sure we had everything we needed. I also enjoyed a fantastic black iced coffee from Trilogy Coffee. One of our favorite surprises was that our server brought us complimentary boiled peanuts. Neither of us had ever tried boiled peanuts before, and they were absolutely incredible! It was such a thoughtful Southern touch that made the experience even more memorable. Great food, generous portions, very reasonable prices, friendly people, a clean restaurant, and a relaxed atmosphere. Had the most fabulous dinner with my mom here! When you enter the restaurant it is so much more than you would expect from the outside. At dinner time the restaurant had a great moody vibe. Hospitality was top notch. We had a reservation and were sat right away at a table near the kitchen. I love when you can see into the kitchen and watch everything. You know that's a restaurant that trusts what they make and has nothing to hide. Our server was AMAZING. He was the kindest guy and constantly made sure we had everything we needed. He made our night with his fun energy. The food was phenomenal. The restaurant provides elevated boiled peanuts on the table to snack. The flavor was great. I ordered the jumbo lump crab cakes that comes with 2 decent size crab cakes packed with crab meat. As sides, I ordered the caesar brussels and potatoes. The sides were great and the potatoes were a combination of different potatoes which I liked. My mom had the chicken and dumplings and she had rave reviews to give. Hands down, the best dining experience in DeLand! Love this new(ish) addition to downtown dining. Hip and trendy vibe with a fresh pressed juice cocktails, great food and incredible service (shout out to Hunter!). We started with cocktails - Thymes Up and Spiked & Spicy. They were excellent and had the freshest fruit garnishes. The chef sent our boiled peanuts (an amuse-bouche), which we thoroughly enjoyed. For dinner, we had the Chicken and Dumplings (little round biscuits of goodness), Filet (love the peppercorn rub), Hangar Steak (special, super flavorful) and Grouper (special, most beautiful presentation ). For sides, we had crispy smashed potatoes (favorite), Brussels and asparagus. Everything was great! Had a great meal for a birthday dinner on 30-Jul. Started with the Short Rib Tacos and they were very, very good. My wife had the meatloaf with asparagus and she thoroughly enjoyed it. Good flavor, a good-sized portion as well. I had the short rib with fingerling potatoes and subbed out the brussel sprouts. It was excellent. Plate presentation for the short rib was nice, the meatloaf was a little plain. Service was spot on, teamwork very obvious (which as an old restaurant guy I was so glad to see), and as another reviewer stated - the inside appearance is so much more that how it looks on the outside. Chef did an excellent job with the food. Overall, a 5/5, we will definitely put it on our list of places to go regularly. Highly recommended. read more

I really wanted everything to go well and from the moment we sat down i could tell we picked the right place. Our server Dalia was amazing!!! she was so kind and welcoming and somehow made everything feel relaxed and comfortable. she was attentive without interrupting us and really helped make the whole night feel easy and natural. And her suggestions helped! The drinks were incredible the food was incredible too. you can tell they really care about the quality of what they serve. everything tasted fresh and was cooked perfectly. we were both talking about how good everything was the whole night i also have to give a huge shoutout to the manager Michael. you can tell he runs a tight ship because the service from everyone was outstanding, even with the restaurant being busy. he still took the time to stop by our table, check on us, and make sure everything was going well. he made us feel like VIPs instead of just another table between the amazing food, Dalia helping make our night feel so comfortable, and Michael making sure everything was running so smoothly, i couldnt have asked for a better place for a first date. definitely one of the best restaurants in Deland and we already agreed it was so good we need to go back for date #2 read more

Reservations very strongly recommended, we didn't do that. Quoted a 45 minute wait but seated in about 20. Service was outstanding, even given the fact that the other members of my party are rank Philistines. Bartender, server, chef, runners, literally everyone was as impeccable as anyone has ever uttered the words "impeccable service." The food was very, very good. I had a salad with ahi that had exactly the right proportions of every ingredient. Everyone else loved their entrees, however which I won't get into since the menu changes frequently. Scratch kitchens like this make what they can with what they get, and this one is shining example of how good that can be. Dessert was one of the best slices of cheesecake I've ever had, and a gelato flight with some insane flavor profiles. It was, in a word, outstanding. 4 (extremely good) martinis, app, two entrees, two dessert, clocked at a reasonable $140 pre-tip. Go here and eat a succulent meal. Worth every cent. read more

I have been here three times in three different trips to DeLand to see family and friends. One lunch. Two dinners. Staff is warm and welcoming... very DeLand! If you have to wait for a table, they have games on the bar tables. Super nice atmosphere. The handcrafted cocktails are to die for! I'm gonna start off by saying that we are not locals. This place always suggested by a coworker of mine who is a local said that has a lot of food options but this is gonna be one of the best. Our meal was on a Friday night and I would suggest a reservation because they have limited seating . Our waiter was great he gave us excellent suggestions. We tried two different wines to figure out which ones suited us best. We're definitely sweet juice wine people. At the start of the mail, you get a small gourmet order of boiled peanuts, which definitely resembles the texture of a bean like a chickpea , I am a textured girl. I cannot eat those. They're not for me because of the texture however they were seasoned and smelled amazing. My Husband ate the whole plate and he's never had anything like that before. My Husband had the salmon grilled with grits and french fries , the grits had brie cheese in them, which was totally different again one of those dishes. My Husband has tried before but in a breakfast setting without cheese he enjoyed them. I told them there's 1000 ways to make grits and some people can do it great, regular shoestring potato fries they were good. The salmon it was a little dry, but it was well seasoned and pretty good other than being dry. I ordered the prime rib with mashed sweet potatoes and a salad . The salad is a bit of spring mixed with white oil and vinegar dressing decent as a salad., the master whipped sweet potatoes were good. I didn't expect them to be savory. I expected them to be sweet, but they had a nice savory taste with a note of sweet very good. The prime rib was super tender and delicious. I really enjoyed it. It is just a lot of meat for one person and I thought My Husband would eat the rest of my meat and he did not cause he likes his meat well done. When you enter, there's a large wrap around retro couch. It's such a beautiful color. It fits the vibe nicely They have a few hidden gyms throughout the restaurant like check out the wallpaper that's my little hit Is a very cute place. There's a bar right in front. Thanks to their lunch menu, you can eat in such a nice ambiance at a very reasonable price. The service was really good, everyone was friendly and helpful. No complaints at all. As one of the newer restaurants in Deland, Hunters and Gathers food service is quite consistent. The food is good. It's prepared. Well it's balanced and it's tasty However. Their service is a bit slow. Especially on busy nights you might be waiting 10 to 15 to even 20 minutes before a server comes over. I find that very troublesome. However, knowing that they are a new business I feel like it is a place that I would highly recommend because the food is different. It's a nice addition to DeLand's food scene. read more

Love coming here for the whole vibe of this restaurant. The food here is always excellent along with the friendly service you get! This trip my friend and I got the Chicken Croque Monsieur and the 3 sides, Whipped Sweet Potato, Fried Smash Potatoes, and Carrots à L'Orange. I was able to add a grilled chicken breast, to have a little more protein. I also love getting a Cold Pressed Juice while I'm here. I winded up getting the delicious Chocolate Espresso Martini for dessert, because they no longer have the croissant beignets since they changed their menu. I will miss them so much, because no one else in town is making these little delicious pieces of fluffy dough heaven, that were served with 3 little dipping sauces. Only giving it 3 stars because the staff here are great. I had very high hopes for the place from the reviews. But the food was very much lackluster. I'm a Maryland boy so I'm very snobbish about my crab cakes. Which I understand I'm in Florida and to not get my hopes up. Which I normally don't. So when I saw they advertised Maryland Jumbo Crab Cakes with a great photo I had to try it. Before doing so I purposely asked the server if the cakes were mostly filler or crab to which they told me it was all crab. So needless to say I was very excited. Until the food came out. I got the cakes and I could barely find any crab in the thing. It was all binder. I ate half the cake before leaving hungry. My better half's food wasn't nearly as bad. But definitely not as good as some people rate it. Very under seasoned to the point it was just bland. Other than that it really is a cool spot. Very nice atmosphere. Great drinks. Very good service. Just either need to do better with the food especially with the prices they charge. read more

After seeing the Crab Cake Skillet on FB page I had to stop in for Brunch. Very engaging place with a laid back vibe. Table games are there for those waiting. I knew what I was getting before I left the house. The pics on FB made it very easy. Their menus are being finalized and the have established lunch and dinner hours, closed Monday and Tuesday. Service is immediate and driven by teamwork. Not noisy, hovering or in the way. Coffee is strong. The Crab Cake Skillet is nuts. For dinner, I started with the chef's special ceviche, made with snapper and fresh starfruit that the chef personally told me he grows on his own trees -- such a special touch and a perfect example of how much they care about where their food comes from. The ceviche was bright, fresh, and beautifully balanced. I also had the short rib, which was incredibly tender and flavorful, followed by the carrot cake bread pudding -- absolute perfection and the ideal way to end the meal. I paired my dinner with Cool as Cucumber cocktail -- hands down one of the most refreshing and well-crafted drinks I've had in a long time. For lunch, I had the birria grilled cheese with consommé, which was rich, comforting, and executed so well. Great spot located just off Volusia Ave, with convenient parking. On entering this tidy spot, my wife and I were welcomed and quickly processed, then seated by the friendly and efficient staffer. Our server, Carson was awesome, meticulously explaining the drinks/liquor list and menu. Before I comment on the meals, I would be amiss if I did not comment on the setting, which was beautiful, starting out from the comfortable seatings in the waiting (before reception desk). Beginning with drinks, my wife had the red sangria, who said that it was great and that it was very reasonable (about 9 oz.) for $7.00. I had the smoked hunters old fashioned - applewood liquor, which I though was novel. Later, I changed my second and last drink to a carrot-based cocktail, which was quite interesting, denoting a hint of ginger. The entrée was grilled salmon plate, accompanied with grilled asparagus and spaghetti squash, and prime rib, also served at my request with asparagus and spaghetti squash. Was visiting FL and decided to try Hunters & Gatherers. The ambiance was very pleasant and the food was superb. Our server (Dalia) was incredibly knowledgeable of the menu and paid attention to us when we were discussing the menu, making an excellent recommendation for an entrée, based on our discussion. They don't advertise that their chef was a "Michelin-star" trained chef, but based on the quality of both my wife's meal and mine I am not surprised. I just found a little gem in the heart of downtown Deland. Hunters & Gatherers is an elevated take on the scratch kitchen. Everything from the very friendly service, to the modern and cozy atmosphere, to the amazing food. For me, their combination of the three does not get much better. I had a grilled mahi with this amazing corn side dish. I am an island man, ethnic Island vibes in the seasonings and sauce brought me to the gates of Heaven. I love mahi, but I have honestly never had one anywhere cooked that perfectly. My very friendly server recommended it to me, and warned me that I may not have my anywhere else. While that is a daring thing to say, I must admit he is right. I have ordered mahi many times from many fine restaurants, even dedicated five star seafood places. Two guests in our party had half of a bacon sandwich which only had one piece of bacon that was broken in half with a little bit of a tomato and one piece of lettuce. Another member of our party had the beef sandwich which had hardly any meat on it at all. We understand that sandwiches have been recently been put on the menu here, but they definitely need to be improved. If you were to take the sandwiches and open them up and take photos of them, I doubt you would want to put them out there for people to see as a representation of a fine restaurant. The waitress did take half of our bill off but we left there hungry and disappointed. I hope that they change and improve the situation.
