I'll be honest with you; unless you're planning to eat an amount of seafood that would fit in an industrial wheelbarrow, you're going to choke at the price. $130 (tip included) for two adults and two kids. Doubly frustrating if all your kids want to eat that night is brownies and bread rolls. Here's a tip: they offer a kids' menu. We weren't told this at the outset, it was the result of overhearing another family. Ask for it, your wallet will kiss you. Ok, so. On to the positives. The staff were very good indeed - attentive, polite, and no giant hairy arms with nazi tattoos reaching across your face to take a plate away or refill an iced tea before you're ready. The decor: gorgeous. Comfy chairs, candelabras, tasteful all over. No fake Irish road signs or pictures of the Three Stooges nailed to the wall here. Finally, the food. Oh my giddy goodness, the FOOD. The bloody food in this place. Insane. Amazing. Buffets are supposed to have crap food heated by lightbulbs (Golden Corral, I'm looking at you!) But the food here was even better than at some higher end menu-based restaurants. Seafood so fresh it should almost be served by a guy in galoshes saying "arrr, me hearty! The sea be a cruel mistress! Can I refill your iced tea, land lubber?" EVERYTHING was good here. They were even serving Oysters Rockefeller - I didn't know those things existed outside of what guys wearing monocles and wearing top hats order in posh hotel restaurants in comics. I like seafood. I've been known to frequent buffets. But Captain George's was a miss. The experience is generally unpleasant, the hostess crew a bit clueless, and the food subpar for the cost. The Yelp page said that they take reservations. In retrospect, it's pretty obvious why they don't do reservations. There's no telling when a table will clear up. It was a mob, with cafeteria-style food and seating. Loud and confusing, this is not a place to bring a young family or group of people. Calling ahead so that I could pick the right place for my senior parents and young child and niece, I was told that there might be a 15 minute wait for the time we planning on arriving. We decided to come earlier to beat the crowds. 35 minutes later, we were buzzed into the funnel like cattle. Seafood doesn't do well under heat lamps. The food I had, and I tried a lot of stuff, was overcooked, chewy, and salty. The steamed crab legs had been boiled too long. The steamed spiced shrimp were tough and nasty. The non-seafood turned out a lot better, but I can get that at any buffet restaurant for one-third the price. The dessert was great. I guess if you've got to get one thing right, make it the dessert. Overall, extremely disappointing for all the hype on Yelp and the price. Just silly. You'll get more mileage elsewhere. read more

I see a lot of reviews on here where people seem to be shocked to find that the buffet at Captain George's is $31. If you are familiar with seafood buffets on the beach, then you know this is a very reasonable price for what it is. This restaurant has become not only a must-visit restaurant when on the Outer Banks but also an occasional reason for going to the Outer Banks. Our most recent visit was for exactly that reason when my sister decided she wanted crab legs. We arrived at 3 p.m. and were among the first to be seated. My sister dove into her crab legs and sample the stuffed mushrooms while I enjoyed the prime rib, fried oysters, corn on the cob, mac and cheese, baked chicken, ribs and more. I also started off with a salad full of fresh veggies. Once again, everything was delicious. Short of going all the way down to Myrtle Beach, SC, this is the best buffet on the beach you will find. read more

But the cattle herding from the manager and lobby staff made it clear they just don't care about customers during their "we're minting money" season. They're swimming in tourists, so why worry about the people who own homes here, spend dozens of weeks a year here, and are their winter time bread and butter? I have reduced my four stars to just two. That's based on their inability to keep up with their buffet, and their lack of concern for customer service. How disappointing. Okay vacationing with the famILY, love thee OBX! I'm pretty sure that this was my first time here. It was right off of the main highway, easy to locate from the road with plenty of parking. We came here specifically for the seafood buffet. It was about thirty one a person. They had a regular menu as well, but I didn't even look at that. I mean what for? The restaurant itself was pretty spacious inside and had about four separate buffet stations. The food was delish! I started with a salad and worked my way up from there. Everything was really fresh and I noticed that that they replaced the items rather frequently. It seemed that the prime rib and the fish dishes went fairly fast, so I wasn't able to taste those, I got tired of waiting. The fried seafood was seasoned nicely, the crab legs were decent, I only wished that the veggies were a little better. they looked as though they were sitting a bit.... I wasn't thoroughly pleased with the dessert section. Most of it looked picked over, I tried what looked to be a strawberry shortcake, it just wasn't my favorite. A few corners get cut here, but there's enough good stuff on offer that it's worth the price of admission. The seafood is frozen and mostly B grade, but it's a fairly solid B. Expect a lot of surimi and fake scallops, but the raw oysters and shrimp are legit good and they do a tasty "prime rib". Which I suspect is drum tenderized sirloin, but it's quite good in any case. The dessert bar is inelegant but serviceable if you don't mind imitation whipped cream product, frozen mass produced cream puffs and clunky buffet pan sized cakes. The selection is broad enough to find something that should appeal. The atmosphere is modern and upscale, though there is plenty of family appeal with televisions in the booths. A word of warning, the programming on offer is not all family friendly and it's easy to push the wrong button and get offered some very explicit titles! One of those titles kept popping up after I'd tried to get rid of it, though fortunately it didn't actually start playing. Service was friendly and competent. Overall I would give this spot a solid three; if you want to slurp a dozen oysters, have steak and seafood for dinner and a simple dessert, you could certainly do worse than their $30 off season price tag. Not everything on the buffet is excellent, but most of it is decent and some of it is quite good. Just for the love of decency and keeping your appetite, don't mess with the buttons on the TV in your booth or you might get something on your plate that you weren't looking for at a seafood buffet! read more

Look, it's a trough. I assume since you're looking at reviews of the place, you're interested in eating from a trough with the rest of the cattle. Pros: Can accommodate very large groups, but the wait for a very large group may be long. Small groups (4 and under) can be seated quite quickly most of the time. Crab legs (multiple kinds) are on point, as well as the other steamed items (shrimp, muscles, clams). If you like steamed shellfish this is actually a pretty good option. Service is fairly attentive. Neutral: Cocktail prices are a smidge high for weak cocktails. Cooked fish items (salmon, norfolk special, fried shrimp, fried clams) are all just ok. Get them when a fresh batch comes out. Cons: Did I mention it's a packed trough you have to fight your way upstream past the larger animals to get anything? Non-seafood dishes (pork loin, "steak", mashed and gravy, mac and cheese, etc) are all bland and lacking. I actually think this is on purpose, figuring anyone going to the SEAFOOD buffet and not getting seafood is extremely unadventurous. It's probably fine for the kids. Honorable mention: Most of the desserts are pretty good, and I really like their hush puppies, but don't fill up on those. read more

The weather is getting warmer, and that can only mean one thing: an imminent trip to OBX, which always includes a visit to Captain George's. When my then-new-sweetheart took me to his KDH beach house in 2010, he discovered to his horror that I had never had a raw oyster, and vowed to change that. But, strangely, we visited five bars and restaurants in KDH before finding a place that had any -- Captain George's! It looked a little chain-y and at first they seated us in a buffet dining room with a bunch of noisy children, but a manager came to our rescue and proactively asked if we'd prefer the bar. We moved over to their huge, gorgeous bar encircled in TVs-- much more our comfort zone. I had my first delicious oyster on a half shell (with g&t) there! We literally go here every time we go to OBX. We have a habit of inviting our entire address book to the beach with us, so on occasion we have brought another 15 or so folks with us for oysters at George's, filling up the bar. The bartenders are always great and we always have a wonderful time. I'm not giving it five stars because I've since discovered better oysters... We were extremely impressed with the options on the buffet! We also heeded warnings from other reviews and arrived before 4:30pm when it tends to get busy. We got there around 4:10pm on a Thursday with a group of 13 and were seated right away. Even as the place got busier, there was never anything missing from the buffet lines! Everything was delicious! We also chose this place because kids 4 and under can eat the buffet for free and we had four 4 year olds with us. Our server was also amazing... our glasses were never more than half empty and the disposal buckets on the table never got full. When we left around 5:30/6 the place was packed and there were at least 30 people waiting, so either get there early or much later after the dinner rush. For $37/person for all you can eat seafood, we'd go back to this place in a heartbeat! P.S. The carrot cake is AMAZING! :) read more

When I come to the OBX, I usually make a point to stop here. I'm usually visiting during the off season. Service is always good. Friendly. Buffet isn't cheap, especially with the current economy, but I was satisfied with what I got and what I paid. I had to ask for some items that are usually on the buffet, but they didn't take long and the portions were adequate. I'm sure I ate my share of crab legs beside the other items I enjoyed. This place isn't worth it for the price, very hit or miss. Servers weren't wearing masks and I know most precautions have been lifted, but with OBX being a huge travel destination, they should have had better judgement on this. Only thing that is good is the crab legs and the normal food. However a lot of crab legs were rotting, showing that it isn't fresh, why would you even serve that. The other seafood is disgusting and not fresh at all, it just doesn't taste right and made my stomach hurt. The deserts are good you can't go wrong with that. Our server was great and very kind. We went here while visiting the Outer Banks. This place was very good and there was good social distancing going on in this restaurant. This place had a "self service" buffet even with COVID-19 restrictions. That being said it felt safe as everyone had to wear masks while at the buffet and use hand sanitizer and provided gloves for every visit to the buffet. With the exception of no salt and pepper shakers, it was like being at a restaurant pre-COVID-19. If we are in the area, we will be back. read more

If you are a Northerner like myself and visit the Outer Banks? You seriously need to try the experience of a Seafood Buffet at least once during your visit. And don't let the price put you off - most places in the area your going to end up spending some $$ on dinner, so you might as well suck it up and check this place out. When we finally crossed that Wright Memorial Bridge on Saturday afternoon...we were tired, hungry and beyond frustrated. I totally forgot about the traffic on "Turnover Day". Sweet Mary mother of god. Anyways, we had some time to kill before picking up the keys to our rental. This place was a saving grace. I don't think I've ever seen my boyfriend so excited by a place to eat before. Because it was only the two of us and about 3pm, we got seated immediately. During that time, larger parties had no problems getting seated. Oddly enough, this place made such a great impression the first time that we went that we returned the same week 3 more times for dinner. During these times (6pm or later), we noticed that while we still didn't have troubles getting seated, larger parties had to wait. And wait with patience they did. Pretty decent selection of seafood, and they certainly kept it coming. Crab legs were always fresh and hot, because the hoard of hungry people just kept clearing them out. The salad bar was nominal, and they offered a variety of sides and veggies. The variety of offerings is part of the reason why I was charmed. If I can make a suggestion on something that you *have* to try, it would be the German Chocolate Cake. This is worth every calorie, although I doubt you should worry about calories if you come to Capt. George's while on vacation. It has now been 6 weeks sense our last dining experience at Capt. George's. This will be the first place where I will stop at when I visit the Outer Banks next year. Not the Food Lion, not Super Wings, but this place. read more

Down for a week family vacation. Heard from others if all you can eat is what you want this is the place. CGS didn't disappoint. Fresh consistently turned seafood galore. Meat, chicken and veggies to boot. Service was outstanding. The multiple types of crab were never empty and when close only waited maybe 1-2 minutes and a full pan of fresh out of steamer or boil arrived. The servers and kitchen I believe deserve the accolades for the success. They work very hard to make your visit memorable. The managers walking the floor should in my opinion stop and ask patrons if their dinner and service is to their satisfaction. One it's good practice to get genuine comments and two they could hear how hard those serving us are working. read more

But, they are extremely understaffed, which I get, however, we waited two hours to be seated just for our waitress to start off with saying they only had two menu item meals available to order. If you like seafood, this is the place for you. Seafood buffet has about 85 items, including crab legs. 18 desserts to top it all off. The best seafood buffet I've ever had. This is one place I go to every time I hit the outer banks. $37.99 for as much as you want to eat. Specials on Sunday afternoon, and Tuesday's in October. There is a menu to order from if you don't want to hit the buffet. I've been there about 12 times and never been disappointed. Staff is always pleasant. read more

Food was comparable in quality to most seafood buffets I have been before their Virginia Beach location is larger and has more expansive menu. Normally I like this place. I'm wondering if it's under new (mis)management. The service was fine. The crab legs were ok. There was at least one leg missing from every body half that I thought it was curious. The clams large and small were excellent perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. This is the only reason for the second star. She crab soup was so sad. :( This cook just mailed this one in. The reason for the missing three stars is the stamped skate/sting ray being sold as scallops. I mean how cliche is that?!? They were tough enough that I could not cut it in half with a fork!! I had to grab it with two hands and wring it apart and the muscle fibers went across the diameter of the "scallop". People, you can't make this up. I said something to the server and she said that they were "Pressed Scallops" ... Even if they were actually pressed scallops they would not be that tough. She brought me a fresh batch and they were the same. I was pretty pissed that it was assumed that because we go to a buffet that we are idiots and don't know what the hell a scallop is. Even the processed scallops are tender. jsyk: You know you have processed scallop when you can unroll the scallop like tape. However, it is still technically scallop. Bottom line go for the crab, diablo, and the clams. Get a scallop voice your disgust to an actual manager and maybe we can get this place above 2 stars. I love the Captain George's chains, specifically for all you can eat crab legs. I always go to the one in Williamsburg, but since we were on vacation we tried the Nags Head location. It's still a very nice restaurant but I felt that the crab was not as fresh as usual and was difficult to crack due to being soggy and not changed out as quickly as it should be. I also noticed that a lot of the wait staff had negative attitudes and really seemed to hate their jobs. Considering we went during covid, we were pleased to see that gloves and sanitizing stations were set up and mandated to use each time you approach the buffet and sneeze guards were up as well. read more

Has fresh seafood everyday, all types. Hush puppies (fried corn flour balls) were tasty but definitely not lightly fried. Had fried shrimp on Caesar salad and it was very tasty and haf 10+ good sized shrimp. Would go there again for lunch but maybe ask for the shrimp to be broiled. Good lunch place. read more
