One of the best buffet experiences I've had in a while. From the get go the service was very attentive and friendly, with frequent checks on the table and accompanied by refills. The interior of the restaurant really followed the theme of an antique ship. Everything was clean, from the table to the bathroom. With regard to the food itself, it exceeded expectations. Almost all the food we tried was cooked to perfection, particularly the salmon and steamed crab. The cheesecake was also considerably better than what would be expected for a buffet. Food was great! They refilled the crab quickly and all other food stations. The buffet area was kept consistently clean and you could see all the employees working hard to make sure everything ran smoothly! Would definitely go again and recommend to others! We had a great server as well who was super kind and on top of cleaning up plates, emptying buckets, and refilling drinks. The staff keeps the crab legs hot and plentiful. Additionally the captain has a full bar so if you are in need of some grog to washdown the Norfolk Special, crab legs, broiled salmon, or oyst-ahs Rockafell-ah, your whistle can stay wet. Ambiance: This is the cleanest and nicest of the Capt. Georges I have been to. It has an upscale nautical decor and the staff is on top of thier game. our drinks were topped off, rubbish bin changed, and plates cleared quickly. We had Thadius as a waiter and he was very rude. He was pushy about two of my friends not getting the buffet, and once they continuously told him no buffet, he would roll his eyes and walk away. He continued to have a bad attitude the entire time. We tipped low (I thought it was fair) due to his terrible attitude, and also the fact that this is a buffet style restaurant and the waiter didn't have to do much. We had an awesome dinner here! Crab legs were giant and delicious, the crawfish was great, and the shrimp were huge. Additionally, our server was very kind and attentive. Everything was very clean and staff refilled everything very quickly. It seems like a great place for family's as each table has a little television playing kid shows. We enjoyed everything. My only complaint is the napkin situation. The owner placed a limit on the amount of napkins each table can get which is so frustrating considering eating crab legs (and honestly any seafood) is very messy. Captain George's was absolutely fantastic. I was really overwhelmed. We arrived early when they were first opening for the day so all of the cakes and deserts had just been put out and it was all so beautiful and perfect. None of the cakes had any pieces taken yet and I was just wowed by the selection of dishes and how beautiful the desserts looked. All of the food was delicious. I had salmon, corn on the cob, stuffed mushrooms, a roll, cornbread, hush puppies, beef brisket, and banana pudding and flan for dessert. I wanted to try the carrot cake but I was just too full. The service was wonderful and it was overall such a lovely experience. We were there with a big family group to celebrate a teenager's birthday and this is the restaurant he choose for his birthday dinner. Solid seafood buffet option for unlimited crab legs. We were surprised to get seated right away on a weekend night. We got seated close to the buffet, which was great. It was frat formal season, but those groups had their own space in a back room. Service was friendly in spite of some of the customers being (likely) difficult for the servers to work with. True mixed bag in terms of clientele and Karen/Karino(male Karen) vibes. But, the servers were working hard and a dirty plate never sat for longer than a minute. The buffet was stocked with a steady stream of steamed crab legs. The crab legs were warm and fully cooked, perhaps slightly overcooked. I also got the clams and mussels that were in that serving area. They tasted fresh and were good. One of the highlights (in addition to ) was the stuffed mushrooms. The stuffed clams were also fantastic. On my would avoid list is the clam chowder (used canned potatoes, it seems), and the Mac and cheese (bright orange and boring). On a busy night, me and my family were offered the option to be immediately sat at the bar where there was full service. We took that offer and the bartender was very attentive with any refills on drinks and making sure our buckets with shells were emptied as soon as they were close to being full. As for the food, there was constantly fresh steamed crab legs being put out. Although there were lines that formed by the crab legs, it moved quickly. I also tried a few other seafood options such as the crawfish and the cajun crab legs, but they were a bit overcooked. The highlight was definitely the perfectly cooked crab legs. The staff were also around to make sure the area where the food was kept, was consistently clean and swapped out any items that were running low to restock. There was a large variety of dessert options as well ranging from cookies to cakes to pudding and much more. With the amount of people at the restaurant and all that was happening, it surprisingly did not feel chaotic or overwhelming. The price has gotten crazy out of a control, especially for kids. It's $50 per person in 2024 and as others have mentioned, they ask for a 20-25% tip on the receipt. It's a bit much since the servers only bring you your drinks and if you're lucky they take away the empty plates. But at that price point, a family of four paying $200 and then another $50 for a tip??? Nah, I don't think so. I no longer bring my kids here because of the price. I brought my 13 year old daughter and she literally ate a plate of rice and green beans and it was $50. I begged my server for the 12 and under price but she wouldn't budge. I felt this was a bit unreasonable since the price is for the seafood and she didn't eat any but I guess it's my fault for bringing her...lesson learned. Still, it's one of my favorite buffets and I almost always stop if it's just me. The one in Myrtle is till 100 times better than this location but I find myself in OBX more often. The restaurant is pretty clean with the exception of the bathrooms. Y'all pigs go in here and dine like it's a trough and then destroy the bathroom. Not everyone wants to waller in filth! The mens room needs a heavy duty exhaust fan because y'all nasty AF and the stink coming out of that restroom would make a maggot gag. read more

This place was my second stop in town as I made my way around a town to do a food tour. I had high hopes after speaking with locals that gave this place high marks. I have to say I was a little surprised the restaurant seemed to have a low turnout of patrons. The buffet was approx $50 per adult. When I am paying $50 I have a higher expectation based on my experience with other similarly priced buffets around the world. This buffet just didn't hit my high marks. The food and experience were just "ok." The oyster dish came out super slow and the whole time I was there I only had 1 opportunity to get some oysters on my plate. The crab legs were plentiful, but they came out over cooked to the point the shells were too soggy to break. My favorite were the stuffed mushrooms and crab casserole. The crawfish didn't seem they were cleaned before cooking as I had tastes of dirt in every bite. The beef and ribs were all overcooked or have been sitting out for too long because they were completely dry after biting into them. For $50 per person I expected better food preparation and more plentiful options. The tastes and flavor needs work on almost every seafood dish, especially the chowder soup. The soup was too salty and had too little seafood. Would I come back here again? Probably not... to me the current food situation is not worth $50... that's just my opinion. I have been coming to Captain George's for about 10 years--sometimes with my family, sometimes alone--because I truly love the OBX and this restaurant has always been one of my favorites. This visit, however, was the first time I had "Joanna" as my server, and unfortunately, it was the most disappointing service I've ever received here. After my colleagues and I were seated, a family of about eight was seated directly behind us. I immediately noticed that Joanna was far more engaged and conversational with them. She offered them the specials and gave recommendations without being asked. Meanwhile, I had to request vinegar and hot sauce three separate times, and she still never brought them to me during the entire 2.5 hours we were there for the buffet. What she did ask for repeatedly was my drink menu, even though I like to enjoy a drink after my meal. I couldn't understand the difference in treatment at first, but then I realized we were the only women of color in the restaurant that night. After an otherwise great meal, it became clear to me that Joanna seemed uncomfortable serving Black women. I have never felt so singled out or overlooked in this establishment. Despite the poor service, we all left a good tip--not because it was earned, but because we refused to be placed into the stereotype that people of color don't tip. But truly, the service did not merit the 18% we each left. I've always brought my family here over the years, even for holiday meals, and I've never had an experience like this. It is sad to be reminded that we are still not always received the same as others, even when we're paying the same money and showing the same respect. Expensive, but you get what you pay for. $50 for buffet, age 13 and up. Very big selection of seafood. One bar of steamed and fresher seafood and a second bar of breaded and fried seafood. A salad bar that looks good, but almost everyone ignores. Hidden gem on this bar is the hush puppies. There is a nice traditional bar of non-seafood too. I loved the baked macaroni and cheese from this bar. Finally the dessert bar is packed with everything your sweet tooth desires. I recommend the Baklava and Key Lime Cake. Every person in our party of 8 enjoyed every single thing that they got from all their trips of the buffet. The servers are extremely friendly and hard working. I think they work three times harder than you regular resteraunt's servers. Please be sure to tip these hard workers. This location opens at 3:00 pm, by 4:00 pm on a weekday in the summer you are waiting for a seat. Especially if you have a big party. I highly recommend getting there before 4:00 pm, especially on summer weekends. read more

Outstanding Honesty and Service at Captain George's After spending the day in the sun, We stopped at Captain George's for dinner. Not long after beginning to eat, I started to feel unwell and set my purse under the table. Unfortunately, I didn't realize it was missing until hours later while on my way home--a seven-hour drive. When I called the next day, the staff kindly informed me that someone had turned in my purse. They had kept it safely locked up and made sure it was returned to me with every item still inside. I can't express enough gratitude to the honest person who found it and to the wonderful staff who handled the situation with such care and professionalism. Not my first time at a Captain George's, but was my first time at this location in Kill Devil. To my surprise we didn't have to wait for a table for our party of 6. I've gone to other location (just my gf and I) and waited 1.5hrs. We all got the buffet and ate our little hearts out. The seafood and especially the crab legs were delicious. The Cajun butter sauce was soooo good. Our waiter was great, always made sure our table was clear of debris and our water cups stayed full. Giving 4 stars because the employees (waitresses) were amazing! Lily was great! The restaurant is extremely well run, very clean and looks awesome. Great Ambiance. As for the food. Kids menu is good, plus they get to hit the desert bar. Price isn't to bad. As for older kids and adults? The price is insanely high! $50 for adults and $30 for kids. While that is definitely high, it's also important to note, you can have all you can eat, crabs, and tons of other seafood, so when you really think about it, $50 isn't so bad. I just don't know who would actually be able to eat that much. The sides (mash potatoes, mac and cheese, broccoli, etc) were actually my favorite! I found all the seafood to be average, the ribs didn't taste great (although my wife liked them). My favorite was the imperial crab bake! Salmon was decent too. I did not have the best experience here :/ All of the food from the buffet tasted old and stale, even after trays were replaced. The buffet lines are so chaotic. Honestly, the restaurant overall is chaotic and hectic. Servers are nudging past you and almost forcing you out of the way. There's no method at all or signs or signals stating where the lines start or anything. Everyone is pushing past you, cutting in line, standing in the middle of everything, etc. which is annoying. Our server forgot our soda four times in a row, which maybe she had an off day everyone does once in a while. It was extremely over priced for the quality of food and service. Our experience started off great- the wait staff were attentive, friendly, and the food was excellent. We were genuinely enjoying ourselves and appreciated the service throughout our meal. However, that all changed just as we were getting ready to leave. A few members of our party of seven stopped to use the restroom, and while inside, one of the staff members exited a stall and walked directly to the front of the restaurant, where guests are greeted. This raised immediate concerns for us, as it gave the impression that the employee had used the restroom and left without washing his hands--particularly concerning given the health and safety expectations of any dining establishment. I approached the employee and a woman I was told was the manager to express our concerns. The explanation offered was that the employee had been "cleaning" and hadn't touched anything. While the employee did admit that he probably shouldn't have left without washing his hands, the manager seemed dismissive and unconcerned. When I asked again if she was indeed the manager, she confirmed that she was, but simply said she would "speak with him later," as she does not address staff during their shift. Unfortunately, what had been a wonderful experience turned negative very quickly. The lack of professionalism and concern over what appears to be a health code violation was extremely disappointing. My party and I do not plan to return, and we will be sharing this experience with others to make them aware. read more

Concerned about them running out of crab legs? Don't, they keep a steady rotation and every time I walked up to the bar, there was crab crab legs out! The waitstaff helped each other out. They're fine by and empty our shell bucket often and refill the drinks as needed. Watch out for people, this place is huge and it was packed. People were pretty respectful at the buffet but not everyone is paying attention. Pretty standard for a buffet though. The only reason I'm knocking a star is some of the food on the buffet was OK. I'd avoid the fried scallops. And the banana pudding? Don't even bother. That was honestly the worst banana pudding I've ever had. It was like a thick, vanilla bean pudding with Nilla wafers and banana slices. I've never seen a white banana pudding before. The key lime cake though? Get it. Was delicious. If you prefer not having the buffet, they also have a separate menu for a la cart items. Overall, the food here was decent. At times, there were lines to certain areas of the buffet tables such as dessert, Mac and cheese and crab legs. They do refill tons of their buffet foods throughout the day. The staff here are friendly. The popular dishes that customers tend to go for are the dessert table, crab legs, Mac and Cheese and other seafoods such as shrimps, oysters, and certain fried foods. If you are in the area, this place is decent. Pricing is a bit high. However, the staff here are very friendly and the place appears to be clean. One thing I wish this place had is ice cream. Either individually packed ice cream or maybe a self-serve ice cream. As of July 2022, mask is optional here. At the time we were there, maybe 5% of customers had a mask. The inside of the restaurant was very clean. We got the buffet and for $50 per person, and unless you plan on getting crab legs, it's not worth it in my opinion. The food is average. I mean this place is basically just tropical Golden Corral with alcohol, which is good because the drinks here were great! Most people come here for the seafood so I'd definitely stick to that, don't bother trying their desserts at the buffet. They are either tasteless or dry. Went here last night for dinner with a group of 11.. the waitress was extremely nice and we had great service for such a large party. However, half of us got the buffet and the other half ordered off the menu a la carte and the a la carte entrees took forever to arrive. Half the party had to watch the buffet goers eat their 2nd and 3rd plates before we stopped and waited for their food to come out, realizing it was taking so long. Buffet food was good, but not worth $50 a person. I would pay $35-$40 a person with the quality of food and number of options available. All the food from starters, main staples, fresh crab legs, varieties of shrimp and desserts were all scrumptious. The food was maintained well on the buffet and for a Sunday afternoon they were busy but not overrun. The server 'April' was patient, friendly and so helpful! Will be returning again and again. Due to covid restrictions, I have not been to a buffet in months. This was a wonderful "welcome back". I was with a tour group, so 40 people rolled off a bus together. (The establishment was pre-warned of our arrival) They seated us and waited on us with professional style and grace. There are plenty of food options albeit I did find a couple of items lacking. The Mai Mai had way too many hot peppers for me, but to each their own. The deep fried scallops more than made up for this as did the shrimp. Our waitress, Missy, was a delight!
