Kakaya has recently opened in the old location of Ladles. We were never attracted to Ladles and I guess not enough other people were either. We genuinely hope that Zakaya succeeds. They have a very full menu, offering classic Japanese items, sushi, sashimi and nigiri, of course, plus bento boxes, a few Chinese dishes and Thai curries. There really is something for everyone. The dining area has a nice clean décor with a small bar area. We went for lunch hoping we would like it and we were not disappointed. I know going in, that Ms T is not eating raw fish, but she reviewed the menu and found plenty she could order. The good news for me is that she will go back. She ordered a Lunch Box that was special with California rolls and Tempura Shrimp rolls, accompanied by a lettuce salad, seaweed, rice and a spring roll. This was a large lunch and would easily feed two persons. Maybe that is the intention and we did not realize. I opted for Yakisoba with Chicken and an order of two Yellowfin nigiri on the side. I am certainly not an expert on this cuisine, but I knew that I like Yellow fin and this was very good to my taste. I also liked the Yakisoba very much. And again there was too much food, so half of the noodles went home with me. We were very happy with our lunches and I for one found it hard to choose from a dozen items I wanted to try. So until next time.......four stars. Best wishes Zakaya!

Excellent food, excellent service and great atmosphere. It's crazy that it's always empty.

You grab one tray per group, grab beverages and order your actual entrée at the end of counter. You can hit a QR Code while in-line to view menu or look at giant board along the counter. So many choices and only so much even I can eat. The line outside is misleading as it moves fast, once you order you grab a table. There never seemed to not be a table available so no worries and no need to send someone in to hold. Helpful Hint - Use the restroom when passing in-line as getting back to it requires going back past hungry customers waiting to order. Super friendly Staff and the Owner (Wife) is on the cash register. Super nice and very pleasant. Good Prices, Great Food, Great Service & for sure some of the best pancakes that I have had !!!

There's also plenty of seating indoors, good for big groups. The ambiance can be described as casual and rustic. They take tap to pay, but there's a % charge for all credit transactions. The service was unique to accommodate the busy flow. All parties grab one tray to pick their drinks and if they'd like to get anything from the grab-n-go section (granola, cereal, juice). Then, you order from the waitress in the front. She was so kind and asked everyone what they had going on for the day. We did stand in line for about 20 minutes but it went by quickly as we watched the cooks in the open kitchen. They have a relatively simple breakfast menu that can be customized to add sides or toppings. Everything is reasonably priced for the portion size. We got a berry berry waffle, which had the blueberries in the batter and strawberries on top & the chocolate monkey pancakes with bacon which had the chocolate chips in the batter and banana on top. The food was fresh made and delicious. I'd recommend coming here if you're looking for a good, hearty breakfast while in OBX with great customer service!

Wow. I really slept on this place over the years. I have wanted to come here for quite awhile, but…read morenever have done so when visiting OBX. This year, I put that sleeping to an end. I woke up...and had a delicious time! The reviews here tell you how great this place is, and well...believe them! I thought for sure it would be over-hyped and not live up to what people write and say, but I will admit to being wrong. First, our server, Krickett, was agreed upon (by my partner and I) to be the best server we have ever had. She was friendly, outgoing, had good recommendations, and an all-around joy. Second, the food! Wow! My partner had a salad...simple enough, right? But no, she was amazed by it. And she is a vegetarian, so she has had a lot of salads over the years. This one blew her away. I had the grilled chicken sandwich. Was it life-changing? No. But it was way better than what a grilled chicken sandwich normally is. It was tender, juicy, with just the right seasoning. I would be a criminal if I didn't mention the bruschetta...get it with the burrata...it is worth it! The crispy bread with balsamic drizzle is good enough with the diced tomato mix, but the cheese gives it a new level. And, I hope you saved room for dessert, because the key lime pie was a mouth explosion.

The restaurant has two distinct dining areas: the front section is first-come first-served bar seating that offers the full menu. The back section, which would be ideal for families, holds about 30 tables, mostly booths, with the hostess stand. We chose to sit at the bar and had a great experience. We started with bruschetta topped with burrata cheese. I ordered the angel hair pasta in a white garlic butter, cream sauce with marinated chicken and grilled vegetables. My husband ordered the special hamburger with Swiss cheese bacon, spinach and mayo with a side of fries. We ended with slices of the key lime pie that didn't disappoint! The food, service, staff and environment were exceptional! We overheard the Server mention that veterans receive complementary meals on Veterans Day, which speaks volumes about how this restaurant supports those who have served. If you are in the Outer Banks- whether you're staying in Kill Devil Hills or nearby- this restaurant is worth the drive and all the hype!
