Whatever you do, avoid these people with your fish!!! They are so disappointing and disorganized it's pitiful! I trusted them to process and ship my fish only to be incredibly disappointed! First, they shipped it to the wrong person! They don't communicate anything until I call! They then have UPS take the fish on a 4 day tour???? Still no communication! Mother's Day - this team killed it. If you want to save money .... go to your damn grocery store. Talk to Ted or Karen behind the counter. Their advice on what is the best item at whattaburger is far more paramount to whatever crap you're gonna purchase. It's like reading a snake rivers farms web site - yep it's expensive. Last time I've dined at Michelin restaurants before COVID they charged between 60 and 100 a pound for king and prime. So here's the difference folks - no 30 to 100 dollars for appetizers and salads. No 3 times mark up on wine. No after dinner drinks or deserts that can range between 20 and 200. No tip which can save you 100 plus. I had stopped at this place twice in 1 week since I went fishing two times. If I was assisted by the lady from the second visit, I would give full 5 stars, but the other lady from the first visit was not helpful at all!! I don't think she wanted to be there. Anyhoo, I carried all fish from Captain Jack's to all the way to Miami. Even when we got home after flying 12 hours, everything was still frozen clean neatly boxed. ***When you want to get your fish clean, go to the main one, not the one next to the dock. After a successful 3 hours of fishing, more like an hour because of travel to and from, we needed to do something with it all. We brought our limit of sea bass and silver salmon that had already been filleted (seabass) and with the salmon we took a few heads and roe sacks as well. Our suspicions had been confirmed that people weren't catching, except for a few charters as they are the main processing place for charter catches, but nowhere near our drop off for 6 people. We dropped our catch off (3 hours out the water and already fillet) here to be cut into 1lb pieces, vacuum sealed, flash frozen, packed for shipping to Anchorage for transport. Since we didn't fly out for a few days they were stored at Anchorage's freezer locker at the airport (arrivals gate 4, baggage claim 2) This process was seamless and took a day for turnaround. We had 3, 15 lbs packages shipped across the country because the jump to 25 lbs was pretty massive and they went out same day. We had 48lbs packed for us and ate the rest. The price for packaging and freezing was actually pretty good and if you bring in a good charter yield it saves hours and hours and hours of work and ensures freshness. You can't really freeze that much fish (90+ pounds post fillet) in a regular fridge, chest freezers work better, but take way longer. If only they deboned the fish (hmm?) that would be a pretty penny. read more

We just got home from our first fishing trip to Alaska and used Captain Jack's to process our catch. They were right at the dock and gave us choices to ship. They took care of everything. When we got to the airport our nice box of fish was waiting for us, all frozen and ready to go. Got home to unpack and it was perfect! Everything was sealed and freshly frozen. Beware of this business (and maybe others)!!! Don't let them steal your fish!! Don't be outsmarted! Here is the account of our experience storing our fish with this company. We are a family who was visiting Alaska for the first time. After fishing for a few days on the Kenai river, we brought three large boxes of salmon (already processed, frozen, packaged and boxed) to Captain Jack's in Seward. The boxes had been weighed by that previous processor, and weights written on each box. When we dropped the boxes off at Captain Jack's, we watched while a woman weighed each box, writing down the weights on a piece of paper before taking them into the facility. I was going to ask them to weigh the boxes anyway, because it is the logical thing to do for both their and the customer's protection. Also, the cost of having the privilege of catching your own fish in Alaska makes you want to hold on to ALL of it. So I was under the impression that was being done. While in Seward, we fished another day and brought those fillets over to Captain Jack's on the dock for bagging, packaging and storing. All went well, friendly staff, proficient, very smooth. Again, the bag of fish was weighed first and she took note! Pick up was a different story, however. It was raining and the woman working there, who is the manager, was not very helpful with our four boxes of fish. She pushed a cart out to us and that was it. I wanted to weigh each box, because, well, what's the point of weighing them upon intake but not after they have been on site for a week? She went back inside and left us to deal with the weighing ourselves. It felt strange. In short, one of the boxes that we had brought to them now weighed almost two pounds less than what was written on it. That's about $40-50 bucks worth of fish! The other boxes were accurate. The lighter box was also taped up differently from the other boxes from the first processor. There were rubbing marks on the damp cardboard next to the tape, the tape was doubled up and the box was taped across in the other direction too, while the other two boxes were not. So I told the woman what we found and asked her for the paper they had recorded with the weights. She of course could not produce it. She pulled our cards but there was no weights on them. WHAT??? She claimed there was nothing else, but my family witnessed someone weighing each box and making a note on a clip board at intake. The manager was dismissive and gave me the "I don't know what to tell you" B.S. I was furious. We had to leave but I called her on the phone later to discuss some more. I asked her why weighing the boxes upon both intake and dispatch wasn't a policy? She didn't have an answer. Well, my guess is it's not a policy because they make a fine little profit from skimming off the boxes of unsuspecting visitors who may only come once in their lifetime to fish in Alaska. Did I mention they also sell pieces of packaged fish at their store? Hmmmm. She said she would bring it up to the owner and said if you are so upset, come on back and I'll give you some fish. Too late, she should have offered that while we were there; we needed to catch our flight home from Anchorage. I am spending the time to share my experience so this doesn't happen to you. We live in Seattle and will be back, but next time a little less naive and we will definitely look for a different facility to handle our fish (and record the weights!). read more

I ordered 5 pounds of Red King for Father's Day (today). I placed my order on Wednesday, and requested Saturday (yesterday) delivery. Captain Jack's was the best price considering shipping, etc. Thank god I paid with PayPal. Thank god I took a screenshot of the "Success!" page from the web order. I never received an order confirmation email. I reached out through the "Contact Us" webform with no response. I sent a direct email on Friday--crickets. After the Saturday delivery hours for FedEx had passed, I submitted a dispute through PayPal. They resolved the dispute in my favor less than 12 hours later. So, I will get my $290 back, but my husband won't get to have crab legs for Father's Day. read more

We rolled into town with a cooler full of flash frozen king salmon we caught in Homer the day before. Obviously couldn't keep it on ice for the rest of the trip, and weren't looking forward to eating fish for breakfast, lunch and dinner the next 6 days. Yes, for $150 bucks or so, anybody (including this place) will FedEx your fish home to you. However, Captain Jack's to the rescue with another (and very cost effective) option. If you drop it off here, they will store it in their deep freeze. Then, they will pack it for travel (in styrofoam with gel packs) and have their courier deliver it to the Anchorage Airport's baggage storage (which also keeps it in deep freeze). Then, you pick it up the day of your flight, and check it as luggage for your flight home. It was still frozen solid when we got it home. read more

The fish was still frozen upon arrival, and the quality was far better than what was available in local grocery stores. The morons complaining about old fish should consider the simple fact that fish need to be caught in-season. If they're frozen quickly and temperature controlled then they're as good as the minute they were originally frozen. The product here is top shelf chrome-bright sockeye. the best you can get. I see no sign of these fish ever having been through a thaw cycle. They were frozen and maintained frozen at constant temp. The flesh is a deep red with high density and firmness yet tender and flaky. If you cook it to an internal temp of 150F the omega 3 fats are clearly visible in the flesh, read more

Just had some fish processed with Captain Jacks last week, approximately 70 lbs halibut/lingcod/yelloweye and 30 lbs salmon. I don't write reviews but I thought for people who might care about their fish as much as I do, I should probably write one. Side note. I process a lot of fish myself for my family and friends and I am the most critical person I know when it comes to properly handling and processing fish. While dropping my fish off, they were quick and did a decent job up until filling out the drop off sheet. I had halibut/lingcod/yelloweye. I asked to have everything skinned (saves on end weight you fly home for something you will just throw away) and labeled so I knew what each was (and so I could give some to friends and family and they knew what they got). The lady only circled halibut on my order and then acted rude like I was being too needy with my other requests. I said I understand it costs more and I am more than willing to pay the extra for those things to be done. I was also going out on another trip later in the week (overnight halibut) and said if I brought it in by noon the day before I left if they would have it frozen for me the next day. Again the lady was pretty short with me and said "No I will not guarantee it will be done". My reply was that I had called ahead of time and I was told there would be no problem getting that done. She said nobody would have said that and that she was the owner of Captain Jacks. So instead I took the rest of my catch through the week up to JDocks. They were extremely pleasant to deal with and wanted to make everything right (they also had no problem guaranteeing my overnight catch to be frozen the next day). The day before my pickup I went and asked for my order to be ready by 9 am the next day. They had a bit of a hard time even finding my two orders, but after about 15 minutes they did and said it would be ready. When I showed up the next morning, they didn't have any of it boxed up and once again had a hard time finding my fish. The guy that was helping me was very helpful and nice though. Once I saw my fish I could tell that it did not get labeled (something I paid for). The guy did a quick job of writing on them with a sharpie though and was apologetic. That's when I saw the owner again. I was back in the back of the shop with the guy and I guess my presence really bothered her because once again, just really rude to me. Didn't say sorry for messing up my order or making me wait. All I was doing was trying to write my initials on my fish boxes (that were supposed to be done, but now I had been waiting for them for an additional 45 minutes). There was no confrontation, I just tried to stay out of the way and get my fish and get back on the road to the airport, luckily I had added in an extra 1.5 hours for possible delays. After getting the fish home a number of the seals on the bags had already popped. I have commercial grade vacuum sealers of my own and I would suggest they get one with a larger seal bar in order to avoid this. I know everyone is in a big rush up in Alaska this time of year and with the volume of fish it must be difficult to keep up. I completely understand. I can accept a mistake on the labeling and a few broken seals. What I do not appreciate is giving someone my business and being treated rudely on multiple occasions (heck I could even accept one person just having a bad day), but it was the owner. My suggestion would be to take a short walk up to JDOCK. They acted like they appreciated my business, immediately knew where my order was, and did I think only one popped seal (with about twice the fish). read more

BOUGHT SAME THING AT WHOLE FOODS FOR $13.50/LB! I thought I would get some kind of a discount buying directly. Not only is it not a discount, I would be paying 3x as much as the local Whole Foods! At $38lb for king crab legs, I will buy at Whole Foods instead and get them the day I need them. I just called WF and the EXACT SAME large, red and white Alaskan Red king crab legs which are normally sold for $29 lb at WF for only $14.99lb! They buy in bulk so can save you a HUGE amount over purchasing from places like Captain Jacks. C.J. will try to make you believe there is something is special about what they are selling you, when there is absolutely NO difference. The box from WF said "Cape Fisheries Alaska, USA. Made in USA, Fresh caught, cooked and frozen at sea". A case was 11 lbs and if you buy 2 cases I got an extra 10% off, so I bought 22 lbs for only $13.50/lb!!!!!!! 22 lbs cost $297. Would have been almost $900 at Captain Jacks and I would have needed to wait almost a week for it!!!!!!!!!!!! They love to shout about "FREE NEXT DAY DELIVERY", but don't tell you that they have the liberty to ship any day they want, even a week after you place your order! I placed an order on Wed night, expecting it to ship on Thrs (the next business day) and then receive it on Friday for a party I was having. Nope! They sent me confirmation that I would be receiving it next Tues, a FULL WEEK LATER. Then they told me it was MY fault by not reading the tiny fine print under "shipping" (what hutzpa). The problem with frozen food is you HAVE to be around the day it arrives so you can promptly put it in the freezer. But how do you do that when you cant rely on when it ships??? The reviews are right. Captain Jacks DOES sell delicious crab legs. I would just rather buy the exact same thing from a credible retailer like WF 1/3 the price and have them the day I need them. We've used Captain Jack's for processing our catch several times. It's a no nonsense and efficient operation. They get it done and they get it done on time. Nicely packaged and ready to go home. You could process and package your own fish, but this is their specialty and the commercial equipment and bags ensure that your fish won't go to waste and will last in your freezer over the next year. Who wants to process fish after a long day on the water when they could instead be eating a nice meal and having a drink while recounting their day? read more

Very helpful employees, we did wait a little even though it was only mid-May as all the fishermen came in to get their stuff processed around the same time. I can only imagine how long the lines could be during peak season. Prices were fair for processing, unfortunately shipping (not their fault) was very expensive. Since the freezers are mostly empty right now the lady let us keep the fish there for free up to a week. Next time I will go fishing on the last couple days of my trip so I can simply check it in at the airport going home! read more

The only snag I experienced in Seward was the one that works at Captain Jack's. I went there several times and the younger employees were very helpful and pleasant. The middle aged witch with the long dishwater blonde hair in a bun needs to be fired. She told me to bring my fish to the door for processing, and then she scolded me for it with a snotty attitude and said. "I can't believe you're doing this to me." Doing WHAT to you?! Bringing this business my money when everyone in AK knows you only have 4 months tops to make a years salary? Sorry for catching a lot of fish. Sorry for dropping it off two hours before you close after a Montague run. You can be certain I'll NEVER do it again.
