I have no idea on how to start this review because I'm at a lost for words. The only reason I didn't walk out as soon as I walked in was because I was being treated for dinner. This place is depressing and has a smell that greets you at the door when you walk in. "What is that smell? I don't know, maybe it's the outdated carpet but it's obvious and it stays with you throughout your dinner. Now!!! For the worst part.......the food. There is nothing good to say about anything a party of three had. From the appetizer to the main course we found ourselves looking around for the "flavor" because it was missing. I ordered the fried flounder and i'm not sure what I got because I got two pieces and both were different. The fries were soggy and the hush puppies were down right bad. The ambiance in this place is dark, smelly and depressing. Now, I know not many people use yelp here and if you find yourself reading the reviews on this place, do yourself a favor and make your way to the front door. We had a large group gathering after a sad day at the cemetery. The warm welcome, great food, and attentive service provided a nice dinner and the space for more conversations about memories. The menu has something for everyone, which was so helpful with the small children. I loved that hushpuppies were served with the fish and shrimp meal. read more

This used to be a great place. But now it is run down inside and just not somewhere you want to eat at. Servers are okay. The food though, ouch. My fish was raw and I ended up just having the salad bar. Even with just the salad bar I got food poisoning. The atmosphere isn't inviting at all and I should have known to leave when I walked in. Let me start by saying, in the past I really enjoyed this place. Our last visit (June 2025) was a huge disappointment. The salad bar items were just okay. I ordered fried flounder. It's not bad but it's just so so- Althea atmosphere is okay but it needs some music and some smiles and some business - it's so quiet and slow and blah. The waitresses are good but they don't chatter or smile much. One looked like she was just standing sleeping. the salad bar is nice, clean and fresh and soups are good. There's fresh fruit and puddings for someone with a sweet tooth. The food is okay but nothing you can't make at him. I had a shrimp quesadilla and had to ask for salsa and sour creme. The shrimps were those little itty bitty tiny ones - for a sea food place I expected big grilled tasty ones. Their fried fish was decent and they have good fried pickles for a side. Everything is okay - but they need more flavor and more "happy" to the place- run some specials would be good- get people in! they do offer some back rooms for events or conference, prayer meetings or book clubs and having the salad bar make sit fast to eat and participate. This location is country quaint, but clean and the food is excellent! Prices are a little on the upper end for fried seafood, but the quality is there so I don't mind. There were 3 of us, one who won't eat seafood. We got 2 salad bars and 1 baby shrimp & flounder meal with salad bar included. (We shared the meal between us two seafood eaters because we knew the portions would be big). They have amazing batter on the fish. This is no ordinary "flour it and fry it" batter. I don't know what seasoning they have, but there is no need to salt and pepper (which actually means a lot coming from me because I usually s&p EVERYTHING!). No tarter sauce necessary either... Don't drown the fish, enjoy it like they serve it... Fresh , crispy & hot! Ok, the salad bar: fresh, crisp, abundant. This bar has everything from salad to "salads" (in the south these are anything mixed with mayo or vinegar), to homemade potato chips, to dessert. I was NOT impressed with the Caesar salad from the bar because it was overdressed and limp, but everything else was fresh and cold. "Salads" included tuna, tomato/cucumber, broccoli, I can't even remember the 6-7 kinds there were, but they were all worth taking at least a taste. Came in with my wife and 2 kids. It's 5 pm on a Sunday. There were 4 different groups/parties already seated. Only one party has yet to order, the others were already about done eating. It took literally, without exaggerating 15 minutes for one of the 4 waitresses which I watched talking to each other to the side about god knows what to ask us what we wanted to drink. At this point, the same waitress that asked us what we wanted to drink walked somewhere and then continued her conversation without actually retrieving our drinks. We didn't immediately leave after witnessing that but the owner of this business has to look into who he or she is paying to manage this restaurant. That's just terrible. We ended up leaving without even getting drinks. I actually read the reviews for this place but decided to give them a shot anyway. Reviews are commonly bias or differ from customer to customer. But upon spending almost 30 minutes in this restaurant without even getting served a drink, I would say this place is a waste of space and time. Disappointment...do not order a dinner to split with your 80 year old mother as they make you buy an extra salad bar (she does not eat at the salad bar) and they charge for an extra plate. We ordered our dinner to go so we wouldn't be forced to buy another salad bar and the $3 or whatever price for the extra plate. Alright folks - really only one comment. I unfortunately wont be returning. Why? One reason only. Today our table was served totally rotten and putrid cobia fish on the lunch special. No drama. First off, the smell when you walk in smells like a dirty mop bucket that has been fermenting for days. It's a musky, rotten smell. I ordered the fantail shrimp dinner 19$. The shrimp are chewy and are NOT properly deveined, over half my shrimp still had poop in the veins and several still had legs attached. I had to pick all the batter off to devein them myself, so much for fried crispy. The fries are soggy from grease. You can press them and grease drips heavily from them. Good food, large portions Captain Joe's is generous So much for haiku *** I like Captain Joe's, and the gf does too. We dined there last night; not my first visit, nor her umpteenth. And for both of us, likely not the last either. As the name suggests, it's a seafood place. The décor continues the theme: framed bits of coral in the foyer, ship's-wheels converted to chandeliers, and such. I especially liked the cheery sky-blue ceiling, a nice change from the typical ceiling tiles. As a whole, the restaurant seemed well-kept and clean and comfortable (except see below). We arrived at the fore-end of dinner hour, before 6 pm, on a hot afternoon. Only two other parties were present, and we were seated right away. Carol, our server, was with us right away to take our drink orders, a Pepsi for me, and decaf for the gf (both $1.99). Carol put on a fresh pot for the gf, so that took a couple minutes. And did I mention Capt. Joe's is generous? The soda was a full pitcher, the decaf an entire pot. Carol also brought a double-handful of creamers for the gf, without having been asked. We looked over the menu. Some characterize Capt. Joe's as a "fried seafood place," but that's inaccurate in two ways. One, they can also grill, or broil, or bake their seafood, and Two, they also offers several chops of beef and several poultry options as well. The gf went for the Surf & Turf, a steak with fried fantail shrimp platter ($26.15). She chose the ribeye option. I asked about the Two-Seafood Combination: Could that include the Stuffed Flounder? Alas, no, Carol said; although the menu said "fish," that was not an option. Well then, how about the flounder filet? Sure! Carol said. But, grilled or broiled rather than fried? Broiled, sure! Carol said. Okay, I said, the Seafood Combination of Two ($21.45). After ordering we went to the salad bar, where Captain Joe's earns extra stars for generosity. It's a big long salad bar, with all kinds of goodies, all tasty and fresh, and of course it's all-you-can-eat, included with all entrees. Nor does it stop at salads: there's also a soup bar, and a fresh-tasty-and-delicious dessert bar included. Heck, even the plates are generous. You don't like salads? Make yourself breakfast instead: the bar includes chopped ham, chopped eggs, cheese, bacon bits, and over by the soup bar, tiny muffins. Our entrees arrived soon after we'd cleared a couple of heaped-up salads. Carol brought us two more large plates heaped with generous portions of good food. Fried seafood, did someone say? The gf's ribeye steak was a large cut and looked great; she pronounced it "juicy" and enjoyed every bite. A dozen large shrimp accompanied her steak, along with the steamed veggies she ordered as a side, My own plate was equally overloaded with fried oysters and flounder fillet, plus the French fries on the side. The fried oysters were a delicacy that would put the Japanese and their sushi to shame. The flounder filet itself seemed smallish, but it was served with a pot of clarified butter, plus a couple of hush puppies, so all in all it was big plate full of tasty food. We dug in. About the time Carol stopped by to check on us, I remembered: we needed a to-go order of fried catfish, for a third party who could not accompany us. Sure, Carol said again (gotta like that response). Large or small? What's the difference? the gf asked. Three pieces or two, Carol explained. The gf opted for the small ($13.45). When we got home, we discovered that meant "two huge pieces." And of course Carol provided an extra plastic-foam tray for salad to go with it, and a Big-Gulp sized cup "for the soup." (Eh, I confess, we actually used that cup for the banana pudding from the dessert bar, and when we got home, the other diner was plenty happy with that choice.) Only a couple unpleasant things to report: I visited the Men's Room (decorated with navigation-chart wallpaper, natch), where I discovered the World's Stingiest Paper Towel Dispensers. C'mon, guys, you are practically giving away food for free, and you're going to stint on paper towels in the restroom? Also, remember I mentioned it was late afternoon on a hot day? And something about comfort? Capt. Joe's had their air conditioning set on double-eskimo. By the time we left, I was shivering. Captain Joe's is a regional chain, with a dozen or so stores in the coastal-Georgia area. If they are all as good as the one in Jesup, they should stay full and successful. read more

As we approached the door, it reeked of old people. That mothballs and wood smell? It was offputting but went in anyway. Sat in the restaurant for 15 minutes looking over a limited and high priced menu before someone realized we needed our drink orders taken. Captain Joe's is a great place if you are visiting Ft. Stewart area. Everything on the menu is good but the all-you-can-eat salad bar is the best! Our group ate there 4 times in 4 days. This was such a great find! We drove here from Brunswick to visit the drive in theatre and decided to grab some food nearby. I didn't expect to love this place as much as I did. The blackened redfish was absolutely amazing. My husband ordered the mahi and loved it as well. Our server Angela brought us a large portion of food and told us that she had the staff cook another piece of fish because the portion was smaller than it should be. We were surprised by that because we had already been pleased with the size of our meals. Wonderful service, and excellent food. I highly recommend eating here if you're in the area! read more

We had a reservation so we didn't have to wait to be seated. The pricing is a bit average to most seafood restaurants. I order friend pickles, they were greasy and just plain not good. I order the Small Appetite grilled shrimp, with fried Mac and cheese. This can with soup and salad bar. I made my salad, it's a small salad bar but it has the essentials. I finally received my food, and it was awful. The grilled shrimp just tasted like straight charcoal I couldn't even finish it. The fried Mac and cheese was okay, the batter was definitely more prominent than the Mac and cheese. The best thing was the banana pudding, which was delicious. The service was fine. I called around 6 and asked how long it would take for it to be ready, they said about 15 minutes and asked them to have it ready at 7 so that it would be good and fresh and not sitting out. I didn't expect them to make it early and have it under a heating lamp ( I assume) so that it would be tough and well done. I don't like well done steak I like it rare . I attempted to Facebook message them with pictures in the hopes they would make it right , they didn't answer so I posted to Facebook where they apologized and said that temperature rises after it is cooked but if they knew that a steaks temperature continues to rise then I would think that they would know at what time to pull it off to where it will be the way a customer prefers it by the time they make it to their destination... Mine was work which was only a 5 minute drive from there. Also, I actually came at 6:45 so that I would have time to make my salad and they had already had the steak finished at 645... Went there for lunch on 07/11/2017 only one other customer in whole place, waited 30 minutes for a shrimp po boy sandwich, when it came out it was cold. Very disappointing, will not be back and I've eaten there my whole life. Service was ok, but I've had better food and service other places. In a small town like ours, we are limited on where we can eat, but I will not be returning. When lady who rang up my bill asked me how it was, I told her it was cold. Very surprised to see some of the poor reviews for this restaurant. We stopped in an hour before closing and felt terrible about it. The waitresses were happy and not worried about us holding them up. The salad bar was great and the portions were huge! I thought all the food was delicious and I'm a big seafood fan. My wife and I love seafood but when it comes to the Jesup Captain Joes my suggestion is drive elsewhere. We are fortunate to live between Jesup and Baxley so we choose to go to Captain Joes Baxley location. As for the Jesup location I only give two stars because the floor staff were up to par. The food on my three meal trips (one lunch and two suppers.) was soggy and on one account cold. Shrimp were small and gritty same with oysters. Fish had been frozen and had absolutely no flavor. Lunch salad bar was fresh dinner bar was wilted and browning. It would be great if they would update the restaurant a little or at the least cleat the place, treat family diners as well as they do the larger parties, and don't let ready plates set before serving. Dining parties do get preferential treatment. If you go as a family and they have a party going on you will be pushed to the back of their concern. read more

The food is not so great, but let me tell you about the horrid employees. My husband and I go there to eat. We order fish and shrimp, some drinks and the salad bar. We're there maybe 10 minutes when I get a call from my daughter's school saying that she has fallen off the top of a 10 foot slide and is convulsing and possibly having a seizure. We need to leave ASAP to get her, but when we explain to the guy at the front that we will pay for the salads and drinks, he flips out on us and has the audacity to tell us we need to wait for our food to get done so we can put it in a box and pay for it. I have to tell him again that my child is having a seizure, and we have to leave now, and his exact words were: "do you think it's fair to have us cook this food and you just not pay for it?" Well, we didn't even eat it yet and then had a serious emergency, so the thought of him having to throw my food away was not that big a deal to me, but apparently it was just the worse thing in the world to him. Captain Joe's cheesecake factory?? They have REAL cheesecake! It's the best I've ever had anywhere. They have real Key Lime pie, too, which every southern seafood restaurant ought to have, and it is so cool and creamy and perfect after a hot meal. The seafood is great, but the steaks are delicious also, and the salad bar is huge. It's a cute, clean restaurant. We will be back! read more
