I had lunch here on Sunday. It was a bit of a wait but the restaurant had just opened and there were quite a few people here. The food arrived pretty fresh and tasty. My wrap was just a plain chicken wrap but the ingredients tasted fresh and I liked the pita it came in. Perch basket was very good as was the burger, shrimp basket was plentiful and just ok-tasting. Service was friendly. I think my favorite part about eating here was the pretty view overlooking the lake, and the funny little ducks that quack around, scavenging the deck for scraps :) read more

If you're looking for good fried bar food and a good selection of beers (bottles only) with quick service, this place fits the bill. Menu consisted of fried apps, exactly what we were looking for at the time. Hot wings were quite spicy. Mozzarella sticks were fried perfectly and came with ranch rather than traditional marinara. A perfect dipping sauce in my opinion. Adding beers on tap would definitely bump captain Lou's to a 4 star spot. Service was friendly and efficient. read more

Not sure how this place got four stars. To get a table, you have to wait and seat yourself. While we were waiting, a group passed us and went to the bar and then tried to act like they'd been waiting and jumped in front of the long line. They looked like fighters so we avoided the encounter and just let them stay there. The "shrimp" tacos were a joke. Two tacos and two shrimp cut into 3 pieces each. Loads of lettuce and onions with some cheese all for $13!!! We will not be back and encourage others to find better options. The wait service is inattentive which is kind of what is expected these days. That didn't bother us so much but when the crowds cleared out and we were the only ones inside the restaurant, we still had to flag down a server to get our check. read more

My wife and I had the perch basket and it's the best in years! Service was great. It was on a Wednesday night so not too crowded.

We shared a burger and fries (they cut and served it in two baskets.) The burger, well done because the staff can only manage so many orders and they are churning them out. The burgers were great!!!!!! Then we had a blueberry salad with chicken fillet that was perfect. The blueberry vinaigrette and dried blueberries really popped the salad flavor up. Captain Lou's is a happy place with a bar area and seating along the water. On Sunny days wear a hat or find a seat where it is shaded. The staff are all young women who are good at their job in addition to being easy on the eyes. Everyone there is happy and in good spirits. Enjoy and visit often!!! read more

The only thing I didn't like about Captain Lou's is parking. Nice little place with friendly staff and good view of the water. I had their fish tacos Cajun style. and thought they were very good. My wife had the perch basket also Cajun style and hers was a bit spicy but also very good. The wait staff was friendly and always hustling. We picked this place because it was right on the river and got 4 stars. We were not disappointed with the view on the river or the service. However, the food overall was average at best. My husband ordered the perch wrap that was pretty good. The rest of our meal was well below average. The waitress recommended the blueberry salad with grilled chicken. Unfortunately what I got that was supposed to be grilled chicken was a few pieces of hard dried up pea size something that was once chicken. I ordered a "kids meal" of kraft mac and cheese for my son. For $7.50 for a kids meal, I was expecting more than just a cup of mac and cheese. If you just want a drink on the river with maybe some fried perch, this is the place. If not and you are looking for great food beyond perch with great ambience, you should go somewhere else. read more

Worst everything! First, employees where not wearing mask's, I observed no special cleaning process, aside from barely wiping down the table with a used bar rag. The waitress was not wearing a mask and did no use any social distancing while she leaned on the table, to take our order. There is no other place in South Haven to have delicious lake perch. Sit on the front deck and watch the boats pass by under the Dyckman Draw Bridge, or pull up your dinghy and come on board for a ice cold drink. Exceptional staff who are friendly. read more

Every time I come to south haven this is my favorite stop! The beer sits on ice all day so it's actually cold. I never have to wait more than 30 minutes for food and that's even on a busy Saturday. The service is soooo fast and the perch is absolutely amazing. Not heavily battered so you can actually taste the fish and not the batter like at the other places in town. The music is always great and again the service again is the best in town! If/when you come to south haven this should be a destination!!! read more

Yes yes yes! This bar is where it's at! We were in town for a wedding and ended up here after the festivities both nights. The bar is mainly outdoor along the water. They had a live band playing both nights with a $3 cover. Many people were dancing and singing. They drinks are cheap and do the job. If I was ever back in town I would def come here. I wish I could have my 20 dollars back. We saw our server once, my drink was bad and I had to go get a water to replace it myself. My boyfriend's perch sandwich came out with a tiny piece of fish on it and a "uhh sorry we are having some trouble with the perch today" no offer for something else to make up for it and sure as heck no discount. All the little servers in their booty shorts spent all their time sitting on the bar stools ignoring the customers. We had no idea where our server disappeared to. They come out of the kitchen eating fries, sick. What a bad idea exiting at South Haven for some lunch by the water. I wish I would've stopped at McDonalds instead. Captain Lou's is my favorite summer hot spot. They have everything I could want. Good beer, cold beer, an outdoor patio over looking the water, yummy pub grub, live music. Really. it's perfect. We came here on a Sunday Afternoon to enjoy a laid back lunch, cold beer, and river front after a long bike ride. The service was great. The food was very good, we had jalepeno poppers, blueberry salad, and the very popular/well-known for perch which was a huge portion of large meaty fillets. Very tasty! Ok, I will admit that Captain Lou's is right on the water and it is a GREAT view and yes, they do have cold beer. WOW, I know, it's a bar...shocker. However, the area is just dirty and is not kept up at all. At 3:45 in the afternoon, there was no toilet paper nor towels in either of the restrooms. Another issue is the bar tables are covered with body oil or should I say grease. Lastly, out of 6 people at the table, they screwed up 2 of our orders. One, they forgot to put the order in the second was the total wrong order. Did they comp a dinner or drink, negative ghost rider. The food was decent but I don't think I will be heading back and I would advise anyone prior to going, just know what to expect. read more

Aside from location this place is a dive. We stopped in on motorcycles, barely room to park those. If you have a car you'll have to find an offsite location and walk, the food isn't worth the walk, or maybe you need to walk because you just wasted a days worth of calories on a bad burger. Our party had burgers and fish. The burgers are well done, we were told this is because they're so busy they don't have time to keep track, in actually they taste like a half pound frozen patty cooked well done then put in a holding warmer. That was the general consensus of the 3 of us that had burgers. Not much flavor and dry, not even the cheese could help, and the bacon were limp strips. The others that had fish seemed to like it, but when the menu stated perch and by the size it looked like cod, something fishy was up with that description. The bathrooms had little to be desired, were not far from the area, but wouldn't go back if it were the last place to eat. You can have dockside dining and still keep it clean with good fresh food. read more

Unique riverside bar/restaurant right by the drawbridge. We ordered the Cajun chicken tacos and they were very good. We stayed for a few drinks, which were also good and strong. The waitress was prompt and we didn't wait long for anything. At night this place was packed with happy drinkers and the live music was an added bonus. They were super busy and no place to sit. The server saw us waiting and passed by many times without acknowledging. We went up to the bar to ask her if we could order. She said we had to wait for a seat to open up. And we couldn't order and had to wait for 25 minutes if she even takes the order.
