Went for lunch and the food and service were both great. Got the bang bang shrimp to start and it was great. I ordered the perch platter and my wife got the perch wrap both were delicious, could have shared the perch platter it was big and neither of us were starving. Thought we would give this restaurant a second try after a poor first visit. The food was okay at best, but the service was so disappointing again. After dinner, we moved to the bar for a drink. The bartendress was so unpleasant refusing to replace a skunked beer (she said that all the others would taste the same). When I asked for a refund, she snapped the beer from my hand in such a way as to splash beer on herself...some small satisfaction for me. My wife and I tried this place out on a Thursday for lunch. Neither of us have had lake perch before and we swore to be more adventurous, so she ordered the perch dinner and I ordered the perch tacos. We were not disappointed, instead we were very impressed. The tacos were absolutely amazing (in fact we are going back for lunch before we leave town and we are both getting the tacos) served with homemade tortilla chips. The perch dinner served with tater tots was also amazing, the fish has such a clean flavor, not over fishy. I was very dissatisfied and disappointed with the service I received. After hearing a lot of good things about this place I decided to check it out. It was very busy, we had to wait to seat ourselves which wasn't a problem. When we finally got a table It took the waitress quite a bit to get to our table. 10 min after being seated another family sat next to us. Immediately a waitress came to their table and offer drinks 3 min after that another waitress finally came to our table. We proceeded to order drinks and food(since we took advantage of the time we waited.). 45 min later the food was not at our table but guess whofood had their food first. That's right the other family's (did I mention we were the only brown/Hispanic people there?) during this time no one stopped to check on us, they were checking on other tables and we were never offered more drinks (we were also the only ones not having alcoholic beverages.) Finally decided to ask the waitress who took our orders ow much longer was it going to be for our food. She sighed and went to check. 5 min later she came back and basically just dumped our food on the table, said nothing and left( 45 min for fried food?!?!?!) At this point I feel offended and to a certain extent discriminated :-(. I asked for the manager/supervisor. I informed him of the situation and initially he tried to make excuses but at the end he stated that he was very sorry and wanted to take care of the bill. I did not complain to get a free meal!!!! I did tell him that I felt very frustrated, angry,discriminated and offended. I paid my bill in full and left. I WILL NEVER GO BACK and will tell my friends of my experience. read more

The atmosphere is great! My mom brought us to this gem because she used to come here all the time. The buffalo shrimp basket was really good and a big portion. The shrimp were a good size. We also got the buffalo shrimp wrap but it didn't have that many shrimp inside. The chicken tacos and fish tacos were Taco Bell grade. They give you two flour tacos, with lettuce and shredded cheddar and one handful of tortilla chips. There was a lot of chicken on the chicken tacos but the fish tacos were perch sliced up and only had about 4 or 5 little chunks on there. It was extremely disappointing for $9. Half of us left hungry. I'd definitely come back but just come here for some craft beers and a couple appetizers. read more

The food gets better every time! This year they've redone their menu and renamed some items, and boy was it delicious! Usually I come here with a drink in mind, but this year I'm coming for the food too! My server Jared was very nice and seemed relaxed. The atmosphere seemed fun for guests and staff alike! We have been here several times this summer. It is consistently good. The service is great and food is good. It's definitely a locals bar/restaurant. It's on water next to drawbridge. Most of the seating is outdoors (without umbrellas) so it can get hot. The girls are always so nice and work as a team so they are very attentive. Hamburgers are a must as are the tacos and wraps. We usually get the drawbridge turkey wrap but have tried several other items. All good. I will miss this place when we leave to continue our RV adventures. read more

Captain Lou's is the ultimate place to go in the summer in south haven! Strong drinks, good service, and good live music on the weekends. The band can play anything! Must do if you spend a weekend in south haven. Watch out for a horrible hangover in the morning though, as the atmosphere can make you get a little carried away! read more

Captain Lous has an awesome lakeside view and the food is just as amazing. We came during blueberry fest and although parking and seating were very limited, we managed to grab a table. Had the southwest eggrolls which were so good. My husband and I both got the perch- tacos for me and straight up perch for him. It was so good! Drinks are tasty, too. My two biggest critiques are that there is no host/hostess so you have to find your own table. Second is that they don't have high chairs. This place is NOT kid friendly. That being said, our waitress was very nice and accommodating but a hungry 2 year old in the heat with only high boy tables- we were a little surprised how not kid friendly the restaurant atmosphere was. If you're coming with small kids (or anybody that can't sit well in a barstool with no back) just be prepared! Excellent casual food! read more

Great location in downtown South Haven. Lots of atmosphere and really nice outdoor dining area overlooking the waterfront. Waitresses are really helpful and the food is fine, although not superb (basic bar-food fare). History buffs will appreciate the Michigan Maritime Museum, located directly next door. read more

A must stop anytime in South Haven. Crowded, hell yeah that's because it is a GREAT PLACE!! Meredith and Sam did a great job even with the crowd. We had the Perch Tacos, yummy. Not crowded with kids, come as you are but just come to have fun. We are in our mid fifties and felt right at home with all generations. What a delight to watch the sail boats heading out to the lake for the Regatta. Our third day of living in South Haven and will make this our local hang. read more

Cajun perch is excellent and the rum runners are delish!! Hubby and I went this late afternoon and hope you enjoy the great food and views. Bad experience with the drink order though. Husband had two beers and I had two rum runners and we were charged for three apiece. All I can say is watch your drink orders. We are honest people and have never ever tried to screw someone over on anything. I gave her a generous tip prior to realizing we were over charged for our drinks. Lou's night club is ok, but some of there staff brings down the rest. It takes 10 min. to get a drink at the bar and a few waitresses won't even serve you unless you have a table, I thought they make their money on tips. Most bars the profit is in the drinks. If the owner only knew that he or she is loosing 40% of their nightly profits to slow or selective help. They would fire the whole lot and start over. Somebody needs to watch that bar make over show. read more

Great bar, people are aways friendly and owners don't spy on you remotely with multiple video cameras and make you feel uncomfortable when you visit. Wow... Worst service I have ever had in my life, First time my boyfriend and I went to Captain Lou's was last year, our server was alright but spacey and never came to check on us. However this last time was the nail in the coffin and we will never return! Our server greeted us by saying, "yeah just to let you know we are basically out of everything because we are closing for the season in a month" ... Great, she couldn't tell us anything regarding beer that they DID have, so we ordered the standard bud lights. The entire time she had a bad attitude. She took our order, (four of us total) without writing anything down then returned two minutes later to re take our order because she forgot. Then came the bill, my boyfriends bill was $42!!! We were shocked, we had two beers and two meals and I told her to put our $11 appetizer on my check as my boyfriend was paying for the rest of dinner. She came back to collect the payment and we expressed great confused about the check because nothing was adding up right. She comes back with new totals scribbled over the bill, my boyfriends check suddenly dropped from $42 to $36... But that still wasn't right! I had to pull my phone out while this snotty waitress rolled her eyes at me as if I was the greatest imposition for her, and added the bill myself...$25!!!! She snatched the bill out of my hand, "re-added" the bill in her head and pointed at my boyfriend and said "ok, ok you owe $34". We were outraged! I insisted she go back to the register and re-write every individual check. The other couples bill went from $20 to $19.50 to finally the correct $18.75, and my boyfriend's bill went from $42 to $36 to $34 until FINALLY another waitress (our waitress obviously couldn't be bothered to bring back our corrected bills) brought back the CORRECT bill of $25!!!!!! To add insult to injury out waitress keep talking over us insisting that our bills were correct and acting like we were being cheap, though she couldn't possibly explain the $17 mystery charge on the original bill. The other waitress was relatively pleasant but no one offered us any kind of relief or compensation. Not one single apology from the rudest most incompetent waitress I've ever had! And I've been in the industry for 6 years now! Beside the awful service the food was... Ok. The $11 calamari was so over cooked we could bite through it, and the perch wrap was less than half filled with fish. The ONE star is for the scenery. This was my second shot there and I will never return. My suggestion to you is if you do give it a shot, check your bill!!!! It could be $17 more than what it's suppose to be!!! And the service will just always be lacking or worse. We even warned the next group of couples waiting for our table and told them they had better ask for a different waitress! read more

Visited the evening of 9/6/16. The establishment is sort of a dump. However, the food, drinks, service are swell. Servers were friendly, attentive, and delivery of food/drinks was quick. Waiting for drinks is how we judge service at most places. When we order drinks, we do not want them next Tuesday. Lou's is nearly under the drawbridge, so fun to watch the people, boats, and ducks. I had the perch basket (fish fry - a ton of good food). Friend had a wrap and flat shaped, crinkled sweet potato fries. Both were excellent and, again, a lot of food. Prices are reasonable. Some of the more intrepid ducks will come up on the deck and wait for stray french fries. We like ducks, so no sweat. The restrooms are problematic...not sure why management would be so lazy. How much can one save by not attending to restrooms? Interior bar area is dark with no A/C. The place is for deck eating and drinking and the deck is fine. We enjoyed the food, scenery, service, drinks and would go back. read more
