The search for the elusive Best Breakfast Burrito in the San Clemente Area continues. I read some reviews about Captain Mauri's Counterculture on Yelp when I searched for breakfast burrito near San Clemente. I wanted to try some place I had not been, and frankly have never heard of. I've only lived in San Clemente for 24 years, so I'm still exploring. Ha! Hidden away on Del Mar, I actually passed the place when I first drove by trying to find it. I've been on Del Mar many times and must have seen it, but had not stopped in. No wonder so many reviews had "hidden gem" comments. Yelp guided me to Cap'n Mauri and I walked in at about 7:30am on a Saturday, since I read that they open at 7:00am. I really liked that, since a bunch of places where I want to try their breakfast burritos don't open until 9am or even 10am. For me 10am is too late for breakfast. I'm just weird that way, certainly not a brunch guy! When I entered the lights were low and the outside umbrellas were on the floor inside, so I asked if they were open. The person said "yes, it's OK". When I asked about the opening time she said 7 or 7:30. Ok, that's good to know. I didn't see any breakfast burritos on the menu hanging above the counter, so I asked and was told the breakfast burritos have eggs, cheese and choice of carne asada, bacon, sausage or turkey. I think there were more choices, but can't recall. Also, you can add hash browns or avocado. Assuming the kitchen was open, I put my order in for a burrito with hash browns AND avocado added. Stand back, serious business happening here. I had a choice of mild or spicy salsa. I asked for both on the side to give them a try. I sat in the empty restaurant and checked out the paintings and other cool parts of the interior. They have a small counter area where you can sit and also some tables out on the patio. I was liking the place and the vibe was very mellow and laid back. Would be interesting to come when there were people hanging out. The burrito was ready and while I kinda wish I had eaten it there, I had asked for it to go so I headed out to try the BB at home a couple minutes away. The bag had some heft, so it was a good size burrito without even seeing it. The total bill was about $20, so it felt pricey, but I did have a Diet Coke and had added the potatoes and avocado. Wish I had taken a copy of the bill to show the breakdown. At home I freed the burrito from its paper and plastic wrappings, cut it in half and posed the burrito for the obligatory photo shoot. Nice looking burrito. While not long, it was densely packed with ingredients. It was a beautiful sight to see and thus the heft of the bag. It makes the wife laugh and cringe, but I popped open the little salsa containers and took a sip of each one. I like to try the salsas in their raw form before I put them on any foods. Both delicious and neither one very spicy. I did like the mild salsa's taste better than the spicy one. The spicy one could have used more kick, but I do know that spice levels change with each batch of salsa made so I will try again next time. (Spoiler alert, there will be a next time.) After the tasting, I will be using both salsas on the burrito as I consume it. That's why I do it. Full disclosure, I also drink the rest of the salsas if I don't use them all during the eating phase of my breakfast burritos, or any food served with little containers of salsa. Not from the bottles, I'm not an animal. This also makes the wife laugh and cringe. If you have read this far you must be asking yourself, "is this guy gonna review the dang burrito itself or just keep on rambling?" I will review the burrito, but first a message from our sponsor. Just kidding, here we go: The eggs were cooked perfectly. The avocado was nicely ripe and the hash browns were awesome. I didn't get that much taste of bacon, but it was in there and cooked great as well. The eggs and the avocado dominated the taste and the hash browns gave a nice crunch without being over cooked crunchy. The tortilla was slightly dry, but not completely falling apart dry, so this would have been a 5 star breakfast burrito if the tortilla would have been a bit less dry. Captain Mauri's Counterculture (not sure how counterculture fits in) is one of the best breakfast burritos in San Clemente. Top five, from my experiences, for sure. As always, I will come back and give it another try to check for consistency and as I mentioned earlier, I will be coming back. When I return, I will likely not add the avocado and I will try the sausage. Don't get me wrong, the avocado was fresh and delicious, it just overpowered the rest of the burrito and I usually don't have avocado in my breakfast burritos, I was just trying to be wild this morning. Do yourself a favor and head over to Cap'n Mauri and get yourself a tasty, almost perfect breakfast burrito. A hidden gem for sure! Go. Eat Well! HAVE FUN!

Chorizo and Potato Breakfast Burrito - customized :)

I wanted to try something new this morning and was craving a great breakfast burrito. I checked out yelp and stumbled upon John M's review and it sold me to walk across the street... haha, yes I had just parked my car and coincidentally I parked directly across the street so I said "why not" let's try it. Only one other customer was inside when I arrived which would normally make me second guess if this was the right choice but I proceeded with my order. I ordered the chorizo potato breakfast burrito and the menu said it has 3 jumbo eggs for $12.99 + tax ~ I'm not a huge eggy burrito fan and so I modified my ordered... I requested 2 eggs + add hashbrowns. The chorizo mixture she said has potatoes mixed in but I was really wanting a good "potato burrito" hehe. I promptly received my order and it was piping hot with two hot sauce sides. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! Thank you John M. for your review and swaying me towards Captain Mauri's. Honestly, 9.8/10 guys! I know your gonna be like whatttt that good. Yes guys, it hit the spot... just what I needed, a classic burrito.

Great place, tucked back on a busy street. Breakfast served until noon, but we were able to order two delicious omelettes at 12:15pm. Both came, piping hot, with generous slices of perfectly ripe avocado on top. My spinach feta omelette was so good. My husband's ABC (avo-bacon-cheese) was also delicious. A lot of people came in to order food to go. Many regular customers. The service was really good. Plenty of seating. Clean interior. Very homey and warm.

I love this place. I've been coming here since it was captain culver's.... Over 20 years ago... and the things I'm obsessed with are: 1. Bombay Melt (curried chicken with secret Bali sauce, tomato, onion, and cheese atop an English muffin) served with soup of the day, green salad, or potato salad 2. POG- passionfruit, orange, guava juice. They also have delicious smoothies. The place is owned by Mauricio but you'll often find his daughters working the restaurant. :) They are lovely people with excellent customer service. You can sit inside or outside. It's a very laid back vibe. You order at the counter, and then they will bring your food out to you or call you when it's ready. The only thing you need to know, is sometimes they close a little early.. even though their hours are usually till 16:00, I've found them closed at 15:00 or 15:30. I suspect it all depends on how busy they are. So, if you want an afternoon snack, I recommend you call ahead to make sure they are still open.

Oh Captain My Captain - this is a true San Clemente gem. The signature chicken salad, juice drinks, soups, breakfast - all served by the same family that have operated for years. Open most days from 7:30 am to about 3:30. No Door Dash or Uber eats to slow down the service. Call ahead or walk in and order. Ask for Janey and tell her John sent you.

Captain Mauri's is a great little place for breakfast or lunch. They have many healthier options and a ton of vegetarian items, including many styles of veggie burgers (gotta try one next time...). I kept it simple and ordered the "avocado n' jack" sandwich -- avocado and jack cheese with sprouts, tomato, and lettuce on squaw bread. It was delicious, and I got to enjoy it while soaking up some rays on their front outdoor patio. The prices are truly a bargain -- $5-7 for a sandwich, salad, wrap, or veggie burger -- what a deal! They also have many kinds of smoothies and shakes if you're into that kind of thing. Additionally, the Capt. has a good offering of coffee and tea drinks. I definitely be back the next time I'm in San Clemente. I'll bet the people watching is great here, especially during the summer. Note: they do NOT take credit cards!! I give this place a four-star instead of a five only because the atmosphere is very basic. It is cute but it's your typical little diner. The Bali burger was phenomenal I substituted the bun for gluten-free bread which was absolutely excellent. We also had potato leek soup the flavor was fantastic I believe these things are homemade. It's definitely a place to get good healthy food with a lot of options. read more

I work in HVAC and travel around a lot trying various different small chain food locations. Craving a sandwich, but was getting tired of the usual big chain spots like subway and jersey mikes who give you the world of options but somehow always give you the same tasting sandwich. Went here with an open mind and got a turkey sandwich without even really analyzing what was inside. It was delicious.. highly recommend the place, its not the biggest or the fanciest but its good quality and friendly service. read more

I went there with my husband yesterday for lunch. The lady who took our order was the only person there. She kept apologizing for constantly looking at the menu because she did not know how to make the sandwiches. She microwaved the bacon that was going in my husband's sandwich. For a $14 sandwich, I expect more than microwaved bacon... After 20 minutes waiting (we were the only customers there, and had to wait 20 minutes for ONE sandwich) she handed to us the bag with our food. She proceeded to asks us what the price for the sandwich was because she did not remember. Then when my husband is trying to pay with his card, she says she can only take cash because no one taught her how to use the register. She couldn't tell us it was cash only before we even ordered and waited for 20 minutes???? Then she starts calling someone (who did not pick up) and we end up leaving with no sandwich, only wasted time. The whole experience was very unpleasant and unprofessional. Currently eating the Curry chicken sandwich and it is to die for! As a first time customers, they greeted us with a smile and gave us ample time to decide. Their smoothies are also delicious. The artwork is beautiful and the music is diverse. Worth giving a try! Things they could improve on: There were crumbs on my chair when I went to sit down. Not horrible on cleanliness, but not perfect. The smoothies come in plastic cups with lids and straws even when you're eating at the establishment. I think it could not only look more aesthetic but also be more environmentally friendly to have proper glasses or maybe even paper to go cups. Food options are on the healthier side with choices of sandwiches, salads and smoothies. I went during lunch hour on a Friday and the place was not that packed. Was able to find street parking maybe a block or two away, since there's no restaurant parking. The lunch option of a half sandwich, and a side salad, potato salad or chips was a nice size. I chose a half Avocado & Jack sandwich with a side salad (you get to pick out and choose your dressings, which are located to the right of where you order) with a Captain Berry smoothie. Was all very delicious! Plus those cookies were very addicting. PS they do accept credit cards (even though on their menu from their website it says "no credit cards" accepted) read more

We LOVE Captain Mauri's FOOD and friendly staff! Been going here for breakfast fir years, hands down best local spot for early morning breakfast while most restaurants on Del Mar are not open for business until 11-12. I've walked by by this place several times and I regret not coming in sooner! It's a quaint little sandwich shop with a great homemade cooking feel. The prices were great with delicious food. Two out of three employees had their masks on incorrectly...noses exposed. I had to ask the woman preparing my smoothie to cover her nose. On the way out I saw a sign that read...and I'm paraphrasing....King Newsom is forcing us to wear masks even though we fought for the freedom to not wear masks in 1776, or some such hogwash. I can't respect or trust anyone or any business that has that attitude towards a deadly virus. It's that kind of attitude that exasperates and prolongs the pandemic. A lot of people are immune-compromised. But the smoothie was delicious. I'm usually hugely grateful to service workers during this pandemic, but I would never go back to this place. I wish I'd read the negative reviews about hygiene before I went. Lesson learned. read more

This was so perfect for the setting of our day. My friend and I decided to ride our motorcycles to San Clemente to see what we could find for lunch. The fresh pictures of Mauri's caught my attention and when we showed up, it was confirmed. Loved the outside seating area: very beachy and inviting. While walking in, I asked what the recommendation was. Instantly "Bombay Melt" was said. Who WOULDN'T order something called Bombay Melt? My friend ordered the BLT with avo and we did splitsies. The Bombay Melt was so awesome and the BLAT was just simply good. The atmosphere had the local vibe and we both loved it. Oh, and the options for hot sauce were awesome. The food here is always great. I have some menu favorites (Hasbrown Rancheros-spicy) and occasionally will jump to a breakfast special and have never been disappointed. If they're cooking it then it's going to be tasty and fill you. We fight for their leftovers at our house. The service is also great and it has that family owned care from the smoothies to the black beans. I also love the daily soup varieties! Having grown up just up the street, I've watched the San Clemente culture change from beach to affluent business types. This place is a great throwback to the beach vibe that suits SC so well. Healthy, fresh foods top are sprinkled in the menu, along with the perversive affluent lattes and cappuccinos. I had the Bombay Melt- a curried chicken salad toasted on an English muffin with jack cheese, tomato, and red onion. It was very good, but missing a "sharp flavor." a squirt of lemon juice would've done wonders, but I added salt and it was good enough. Side salad and a snapple finished it off- but at $10 it's a but pricey. Overall the vibe and sandwich were good, wish they accepted cards (cash only). I'll be back to sample their veggie juices, and to people watch on the patio. read more

Service was great had a young girl taking care of the table she was amazing.. unfortunately the food was not up to par. Corn beef hash wasn't even edible I have never tasted dog food but think this would be it. Had a Spanish omelet really struggling trying to add flavor to it we got two different sauces a hot and a medium no so good good as well got some Tabasco, Cholula, salt pepper trying to make it edible. read more

Before I moved to California, I imagined that all restaurants in the state would look like this. A place with a chill, beachy atmosphere, a name featuring the word "Captain," nice outdoor seating, a cornucopia of fresh smoothies and lots of sandwiches crowned with tender sprouts. I'm happy to have finally found this place that I've surprisingly seen only in daydreams. I ordered the Apple Chicken Salad sandwich and added avocado for a dollar more. The chicken salad featured big meaty lumps of chicken, which rocked. Too many times chicken salad is mashed up strings of meat and mayo, this wasn't that. The chucks of apple were a nice sweet touch to the mixture too. I think I would have liked a little more blast of flavor in the sandwich, but I think that could be easily solved by ordering the Curry Chicken Salad, which sounds awesome. I'll definitely be trying that next time around. I didn't get a drink, but the menu features a lot of them and they all sounded good. Overall, the ingredient all tasted very fresh and the menu features items for all tastes and diets. Only word of warning, cash only. read more

Really enjoyed my Apple Chicken sandwich here but when you consider with tax it's $9.09 I think that's kind of expensive for just a sandwich. Lost 1 Star because of cost and I had to bus my own table before I could sit down. Would expect to do that on a busy Sunday, but it wasn't too busy and they didn't look understaffed. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE! QUESTIONABLE HYGIENE PRACTICES! This restaurant is the Wild West of health practices and I wish I would have just backed out and not eaten here. If you must, at least wait to eat here until after the pandemic ends. They are not following county or state guidelines. Lady with no face mask and no gloves touched virtually everything before making people's sandwiches. Fortunately I only got a smoothie, but noticed after finishing the smoothie that one of the two ladies working there was clearly coughing, sniffling and sneezing. Please at least wait to eat here until after COVID dies down. County health should talk to them. Read the reviews before coming, seems like their practices were questionable even before COVID. read more

Please think before going here! I agree with everything said by the previous review. The workers were not wearing masks, gloves, and no signs about social distancing/wearing masks. Overall, the sandwiches were mediocre and similar to something you could just make at home. Will not be coming back for the food, but the tropical smoothie was good. Most importantly, they tried to overcharge us!!! For 4 people splitting smoothies/sandwiches our total came out to around $60, which seemed a little fishy. We asked for an itemized receipt, but they told us they could only tell us how much each item was. I thought they put alcohol in my "fresh" squeezed orange juice. Turns out it was just really old. That how rancid it tasted. So gross. They made me some fresh pressed orange juice afterwards though. Had the house specialty, was average at best. Probably won't come back. read more

Great local place for healthy and tasty sandwiches and other hot dishes The Bombay Melt is my wife's favorite and I like the Jack Sprat, both long time menu members. They also have specials where some items are only made that day. We just had the Cashew Carrot soup and it was delicious. Give them a try! read more

Fantastic veggie burgers! Super flavorful and toppings that enhance without deterring from the deliciousness of the patty. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because my husband said that the turkey sandwich could've used mustard. Also - get the kombucha you won't be disappointed! Ps bring cash if you can. The Picnic Cafe--please change your menu to reflect that you are selling 10 oz drinks, or change your prices to reflect that you are serving a smaller size. I got the chicken fried steak and the portion are MASSIVE!!! All of us took our food home because the portion size are insanely big and bang for the buck!! I've been a patron at this establishment for over 25 years, dating back to its days as Captain Culvers. However, in recent times, I've noticed a decline in the quality of the food. On my most recent visit, I ordered a chicken salad to go, and unfortunately, it will be my last time here. The cost of the salad was $15, and to my dismay, it contained a mere half-cup of chicken salad along with a few carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Notably absent were the sprouts, cashews, and avocado that were promised in the description. Adding to my disappointment, the owner (who also served as my server) neglected to use gloves while handling the food. I observed her using her bare hands in direct contact with the lettuce. This lack of adherence to basic cleanliness standards, coupled with the insufficient amount of chicken salad for the price, left me thoroughly dissatisfied. I live here in San Clemente and never ate here before so much great choices to choose from that I could not only get one so i bought lunch and dinner. For lunch I just had to go with every body else and have that BOMBAY MELT MM MM Delicious and for dinner I brought home a veggie wrap which is really good too. Very overpriced, only accepts cash, and food quality is just OK. I feel like there are other local juice bars, coffee shops, and cafes in San Clemente that offer better products/prices/service etc. read more
