Stopped in here a couple times while visiting from out of town after seeing good reviews and wanted to love it but was rather underwhelmed by the coffee. Cappuccino came out beautifully (pictured) but tasted a bit weak, as did the triple-shot iced latte I ordered a couple days later. Wasn't awful by any means but I probably wouldn't come back. Baristas were pleasant, interior was spacious, and decor was cute!
Amazingly good coffee. I was staying in the downtown area and was happy to find this place near my hotel. I order three hot vanilla lattes for myself and two other family members. Oh my! The coffee was rich, velvety smooth while the milk was steamed just right. Specialty coffee takes time to prepare so it was worth the wait. Staff didn't cap the lattes which I appreciated. I take that first sip before I cap when taking it to go. I wish I had time to sit down to enjoy it. There was plenty of seating. I will definitely come back when I visit Monterey. I did grab one of their pins for my coffee apron at home.
Took a day trip out to Monterey and had to stop by Captain + Stoker. Heard good things about this spot and it didn't disappoint. We ordered the golden latte and vanilla latte. Both were good but would definitely double down on the vanilla lattes next time. We showed up in the afternoon on a weekday and all the pastries were out, so I'd recommend coming early to try any of those. Parking was easy and the employees were super nice!
This coffee shop is so beautiful, I loved that bike hanging there. Super creative! Their coffee is really good. I tried their Colombia and Panama pour over and the Colombia is my favorite one. You should definitely try that one. The pastries were not that great, I didn't like the one made with peanut cream, and muffin was whatever but I'm here reviewing the coffee:) the service was amazing, the girl that took my order was very nice.
Captain + Stoker is one of the premier coffee shops recommended by Yelp users, so I had to try it! The interior is cute and bicycle decorated, and there's tons of indoor seating with people crafting, working, and engaging in pleasant conversation. There's a long street bordering Captain + Stoker with lots of parking alongside it. It's less than a 10 minute drive from downtown Monterey, so I would highly recommend this for anyone coming from out of town who wants good coffee and something nearby the tourist attractions. The hot latte was yummy and frothy, I see why this location has the hype that it does.
Local coffee shop with beachy vibes and random bike decor. They have some seasonal drinks in addition to the standard menu. I also saw quite a few bottled juice selections which seemed pretty interesting. Got an iced coffee for $4 and an iced seasonal gingersnap latte for $6.75. Quality was good and the flavored lattes aren't too sweet! Staff are friendly and the hot drinks come out in cute custom cups.
Popped in here last Tuesday morning after yoga as it was across the street from the Monterey Gym. We found across the street parking and didn't have to wait too long for a table. I went for their croissant sandwich (forgot the name) but they gave me extra veggie instead of the ham. I love that avocado is everywhere in CA. The croissant was fluffy and buttery and delish! The matcha latte was more of a green tea latte. They use an organic blend by Rishi. So it's not a traditional ceremonial grade matcha. But it was fine. My husband liked his coffee and croissant sandwich as well. I liked the vibes of this place, not too touristy, beautiful decor. Good drinks and food. Perfect spot post workout!
We came by early on a Saturday before our whale watching tour. I found myself saying "if I ever owned a coffee shop, I'd want it to be just like this..." that's how much I loved this spot. Ok so we shared an avocado toast which was divine - super fresh avocado, the right amount of olive oil, flaky salt and red pepper flakes. Yummm! Then we also got a pastry and their special "peach be with you". I will say - as much as it was tasty - the thickness of the bread vs toppings just wasn't quite right. I won't ding stars though for my preference. Overall we just loved this spot and great to come by with a dog too!
Absolutely love Captain + Stoker! We had stayed in Monterey for a night and needed a pick me up before a long day, and thankfully found this spot. There was a line, but it was well worth the wait! The baristas were friendly and the atmosphere was so good. Stayed in to enjoy our lattes and pastries. We got iced vanilla lattes with macadamia milk, and arguably, it was the best latte we've had in a long while. Also got a couple of morning buns and an almond croissant. The pastries were elite. Great texture and flavors. Loved our visit so much that we snagged a tee and some beans. Can't wait to come back again and support an awesome cafe!
I am writing to report a serious and concerning incident involving a beverage I purchased today. Earlier today, I ordered a coffee and also purchased a pressed juice called "Recoverade." The coffee was fine, but I consumed the juice gradually throughout the day. When I reached about one-third of the bottle and attempted to drink the chia seeds at the bottom, I noticed the texture was unusually chunky and felt extremely strange--similar to shards. I immediately spat the contents back into the bottle and inspected it. Upon closer examination, I discovered what appear to be shards of glass inside the drink. This has caused me significant distress and concern for my safety, as I may have unknowingly consumed some of the contaminated product. This situation is extremely serious and poses a major health risk. I have a little cut in my lips I am requesting the following: An immediate investigation into this incident
My partner and I visited this open-to-air coffee shop after seeing it on Instagram reels. I ordered the avocado toast and an iced Captain's blend, and they ordered the banana and peanut butter toast, and an iced vanilla latte. Our coffees were yummy and our toasts were very fresh. We had to wait a bit for seating, but people were filing in and out pretty quickly.
Busy coffee shop with open (garage door) fresh air and stadium or table seating. It's loud, so don't expect a quiet conversation. The menu has a rotating seasonal section (where my fun sounding but taste underwhelming black sesame latte was from) and all of the standard espresso and drip based fare. The food options are sourced from local spots and can run out by mid day. The staff were all busy but personable and courteous, the rest of the patrons are a mess though - leaving trash and tables awry and spilled upon like they have had a nanny since birth who picks up after them. read more

After seeing that Alvarado Street Brewing collaborated with Captain + Stoker for a beer, we knew we had to come by the next morning to check them out. First impression was how cool their space is. Loved the open windows / garage style doors, all the plants, and the cool rope lighting above. The giant community table was also so unique and eye catching. They had a pretty large menu with a good assortment of drinks, even for non-coffee drinkers like me. I opted for their Iced Citrus Green tea which was great; the lemongrass with hints of ginger really came through. My husband had The Captain espresso shot. He loved how smooth and non-acidic it was. Even though I'm not a coffee drinker, I tried a sip and really tasted the citrus notes which was wonderful. We didn't try any of their food offerings, but everything looked and sounded good. This spot would be a perfect 5 stars for me, but service wasn't overly friendly. The pickup area was also in a poor location as it was difficult to grab our drinks with the big community table next to it as well as people standing around the small area, unwilling to move until their name for drinks was called. Despite the crowded drink pick-up area and semi-friendly service, we enjoyed this coffee shop overall and will definitely be back whenever we're in Monterey. For the time being, my husband did bring a bag of The Stoker Blend coffee beans home to enjoy. read more
I am a devoted Matcha Latte drinker and I can tell good from bad. Captain has legit matcha lattes. I needed a good wake up after a 3 am wake up and running the Big Sur Marathon. This hit the spot. This location is bigger/busier than the pacific grove location. We got the seasonal drinks and they were not my favorite. The strawberry one was super milky, not enough espresso and the flavor was lacking in the sesame drink. Maybe it's just this location:/ read more

Lovely local coffee shop with cool vibes. I enjoyed my garden party seasonal latte which has strawberry and pistachio and was crafted well. Service was quick and friendly. It was crowded inside so I sat on the stadium seating facing the outside parking spaces. Seemed like a community rooted spot with great coffee. read more

Was really excited to try this place, but it ended up being pretty underwhelming... Tried the Stoker Blend with notes of brown sugar, plum, caramel, and orange, but the coffee flavor was just eh... Maybe another drink would have been a better choice. Might give it another shot next time! read more
Always a long line. I tried the seasonal drinks like shaken sesame and the strawberry pistachio. The shaken sesame I approved of and i really liked however the strawberry pistachio was not the greatest. It had barely any pistachio taste read more

Went back a year later during car week on a Monday and the seasonal drinks are still great! Loved the shaken sesame. Bf liked the garden party latte esp when it became more watered down. Not too sweet read more
It was a cute shop with friendly service, however my matcha latte was a little disappointing. It did not taste very strong, like they used a lower quality matcha or they did not use enough of it. I was also recommended to get sweetener, as the matcha latte comes unsweetened, but my drink was not mixed properly and all the honey was stuck on the bottom. read more

Iced vanilla latte x 2, almond croissant, and brownie bites x 2. On our 16 day road trip to Oregon and back we made many coffee shop stops. But by far this was my favorite! The vibes were super hip and they sell a lot of the products they use to make their drinks so you can make at home too such as vanilla syrup, beans, and coffee concentrate. The vanilla latte was the perfect amount of sweet while still being able to taste the espresso, almond croissant was delicious, and kids said "brownies were nice!" The line was long, but so worth it and the staff was very helpful, especially when I had questions about the vanilla syrup. If you're in the area and love coffee... GO! read more
With about a 20 - 30 min wait on a Saturday morning, once you get to order, your drink will come out fairly quickly. I got one of their seasonal drinks (shaken sesame) and it was delicious! The only downfall is that it only came in a smaller cup! I finished it too quickly. read more

Drinks were very very slow to come out like 15-20 min. They also made one of our drinks hot when I asked for both iced. They corrected it, but it was even more time waiting. I got the sesame latte which was decent and not too sweet. Hubby got the strawberry pistachio latte and he did not like it. So the drinks and service were very mid. read more

I was visiting with a friend, and we drove by this place on our way out of town, and turned around because we were looking for coffee and saw the line and both said "this place must be good". We were right!! Their coffee was so yummy and strong! I got a snickerdoodle latte from their seasonal menu, and my friend got a vanilla latte. It's cute and tiny inside, no seating area really so more of a grab and go. If you're in the area, you have to stop by here! read more

A Christmas adventure special visit for their seasonal menu Gingersnap latte with almond milk was my type of spice (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg) and everything nice (brown sugar, molasses) latte topped with cute artisan art. It resembled a spiced carrot cake recipe! Peppermint latte with almond milk had a great balance between both mocha chocolate & peppermint. It was finished with light peppermint whip cream and candy cane toppings. Plus it did not taste like toothpaste because that is our seasonal fear haha Service: just as I recall, happy workers with superb joyous energy. They were helpful addressing small drink questions to additional restroom supply restock. Ambiance: Since Covid, they added more foliage plants for a fresh naturalist appeal. Cute and delicious! My boyfriend and I went here to grab some to grab some coffees before heading out on a rod trip. The first thing we noticed is how nice the decor is inside. Lots of plants and natural light. We both got vanilla lattes since their syrup selection is a little limited and they turned out to be very good. read more

I heard so much about this spot when I tried to find spots to try down in Monterey! I honestly had high hopes for the matcha latte because I had heard so much about it, but was kind of disappointed. While the cafe itself is adorable and the service and pacing that our barista and cashier had were great, the matcha latte that I had heard so much about felt subpar. It wasn't very nutty or creamy and didn't carry notes that I could taste distinctively. It wasn't a bad drink, but it didn't live up to the hype. The yogurt bowl on the other hand was actually really good, LOL. It was simple, but it worked! I have yet to try the other items in the back such as the cold brew concentrate or canned cold brew, but I'm excited to! I really like how they support local businesses, as the bottled-pressed juice is from a nearby juice shop. I travel a lot with my dogs to various competitions and always make a point to research local coffee spots as I love good espresso. I have to say that Captain + Stoker may be one of the top 2-3 places I've ever been! I went two days in a row, enjoying Americanos, almond croissants (THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD), and peanut butter balls on both occasions. Saturday, I also had the avocado toast (I was starving), having eyed it the day before. Everything was 10++, and the atmosphere and vibe were fantastic. It will be my go-to place for coffee in the future when I am in the Carmel, Monterey, or Pacific Grove area. None of the Carmel coffee places compare, and I've been to most of them. read more

The cutest and coziest corner spot! Loved the openness of the shop and all of the cool decor. The coffee was amazing along with the service! We stopped in to enjoy the coffee and WiFi, so we could purchase our Morgan Wallen tickets during pre-sale. Love, love, love! read more
We visited Captain + Stoker during our trip to Monterey. We arrived Saturday morning and there was already a line out the door. Fortunately, it moved fairly quickly. I don't usually order drinks with syrups; my go-to is a honey and cinnamon oat milk latte. However, when I learned that their vanilla syrup is house-made, I couldn't resist. I ordered the vanilla latte with oat milk. The latte was well balanced and not too sweet. My husband ordered a lavender oat milk latte as well as a pastry. He, too enjoyed his drink and devoured the pastry. The space is bright and airy. The staff was friendly and helpful. We went to a race at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca later that day and were glad to see Captain + Stoker had a stand there, so we visited that, too for another cup! read more
Very cool space, open garage door with huge front windows on the side that's enclosed. Sweet place to work, with standing height tables and a huge cool wood table. Line was 12 or so deep on a Sunday at 8:45 am. Ended up waiting in line about ~ 10 minutes to give my order. They didn't have any vegan pastries when I went and had only GF chocolate chip muffins for $8. It was made by Nece GF bakery so I decided to give it a try. It was *super* good, my partner isn't GF and he thought it was great. Also, $8 is kinda steep for a muffin but I will say, it was pretty huge. Half of the muffin was plenty for me. I actually came for just a pastry today, so can't comment on coffee I did see they carry oat, macadamia, and almond milks for the dairy free folk out there (upcharge $1 which is steep imo). Their food menus also had multiple vegan and some GF options. Food looked reasonably priced. TLDR: cool space to work or meet before walking around downtown Monterrey, decent vegan and gluten free options (not necessarily both), and reasonable to moderate pricing. read more

Came to try the matcha latte & it was pleasant! Full of flavor and didn't need any sweetener. The only downside was some clumps of matcha powder at the bottom. Service was kind, and the ambiance was lovely. The decor and plants add a cute touch, and the airy, open space makes it a great spot to study. read more
i was able to get in an order just before closing (so gracious of them to let me!) and am very glad to report there was no attitude nor lack of dedication in making my drink to perfection. even coming in few minutes before close, the staff were friendly and did not hesitate to converse about their drink menu. the drink itself was a beautiful blend of smooth & nutty notes. also something that was minor and probably doesn't matter to most people, but this went above & beyond my expectations was the addition of the cup sleeve!! i've never seen a cafe automatically put one on for you so i always have to ask separately but when i saw they had put it on already, i knew this was gonna be a good place haha read more
Good service in a sea-themed coffeehouse. 1. Fuego Mocha (4/5): Chocolatey with definitely a kick of spice that burns your throat in a good way. A bit too sweet in my opinion though. Double shot of espresso would be my recommendation, especially for regular coffee drinkers 2. Mocha: Chocolatey, but not too sweet I do wish they have a larger menu posted more visibly. The only menu they have is a small printed menu at the ordering counter. It would be more practical to have it displayed more visibly so that you do not feel rushed when reviewing the menu and choosing what to order. read more

My husband enjoyed their house roast and I liked the gingersnap latte. It's a hipster-looking place with bikes and surfboards decorating the walls. The specialty latte wasn't as sweet as I was expecting but still good. On a Sunday you can find free parking at the park across the street. read more
Great flavors, this is a Monterey gem. Staff is friendly. Got the lavendar butterfly pea lemonade (seasonal flavor). I loved the combination of flavors. Next day tried the honey lavendar latte which was delicious. Would come back again next trip to Monterey. read more
