Yum! I can't turn down BBQ any time of the day. The restaurant is located off of A1A and you go up to the counter to order. You can either sit inside or outside or take it to go. The three St. Louis rib lunch was the bomb! I got macaroni and cheese and corn with it. The sauce on the ribs was finger licking good and I would get the same meal if I go there again. The line moved at a steady pace and we got our order in a reasonable amount of time. You get your own condiments, silverware, wipes, etc. at the counter and can get something from the counter if you need something else. The only thing I regret not getting is a dessert!

What a perfect Friday afternoon! It was surprisingly not busy, and the weather was absolutely beautiful. I really enjoyed the three-meat platter; it was incredibly tasty. Everything was just right, making for a delightful experience. I'd definitely recommend stopping by.

Food is excellent. New cashier in-training did great! Recommended by friends and they were right! Multiple people ate multiple meals. All were great! Good process for getting orders ready. We did not wait long once we ordered. It can get busy. Be patient. It is worth the wait. View of landing is good. Atmosphere is not their focus. Order. Get your drinks. Water outside. They will call you when your order is ready. Seating inside and out on screened porch. Worth the stop!

You grab your beverage, walk up to the counter, place your order and they call your name over a speaker from the dining area when your order is ready. They have condiments, utensils and water on the outside porch. The same people who call your name when your food is ready were also helpful with offering ice for drinks and they, and others, bus the tables when you're finished. We ordered the 1/2 chicken dinner $15.99 and the beef Brisket plate $16.99 (each plate comes with 2 sides). Portion were very generous for the prices but we found the meats to be a bit on the dryer side on our lunchtime visit. Food came out quickly, they have a small inside dining area and a larger screened room with more tables and a few fans for overflow.

We were leaving Fort Matanzas and asked where would be a good lunch place. Captains BBQ was the #1 recommendation, we were told the locals go there. We then decided to go to Washington Oaks state park and were really hungry afterwards so I did a quick search for reviews and headed for BBQ. When we arrived it felt like they built a park around the restaurant, it was cool and had seating outside too. We were lucky, only one couple was ahead of us but by the time we left the place they had a line of people. When you enter, you order, they ask your name and when it's called your meal is ready and you can eat inside or on the enclosed deck. We chose the deck for the view of the river. My friend got the BBQ sliders, comes with 3, and said they were delicious. My burnt ends were great and I didn't need to add BBQ sauce or anything. The potato salad was different than what I was use to but it was still good, I was pleasantly surprised. I don't like everyone's potato salad. The beet salad was basically beets with feta but it was good too. Totally worth going. When the manager stopped to ask f everything was good that was the cherry on top.

Love the view of the inter coastal and Good BBQ and Blues music. That's what Captains BBQ offers. They have great burnt ends that often sells out early. My wife and I split the trio sampler because she likes the smoked turkey and Cole slaw. I like the sweet BBQ on pulled pork and beef brisket sliders. We go here once a week. Try it...,

I ordered the burnt ends with smoked beans, mashed yams, cornbread and a link of sausage. The burnt ends were really good and moist. The smoked beans have a couple different types of beans with plenty of pork in them. The mashed yams were nice and sweet. The sausage was good and smoked with a good kick to it. The atmosphere is not very and laid back with boaters and fishermen coming in all the time. It's a great place to watch the boats and sunset. Service is great with quick order times and they are walking around making sure the customers are satisfied.

Stopped by Captains Bbq before going to fish market. It was very crowded but we were able to order and get seated quickly. We all ordered the burnt ends sandwich and sides of beet salad/feta cheese or baked beans. The food was great. Burnt ends were perfectly cooked.

Had early dinner on Friday afternoon (4/25/25) -- place closes at 7. Plenty of parking. Walk in and order (easy), find a table outside, wait for your name to be called with your food. I ordered a pulled pork plate (comes with 2 sides) with smoked beans (superb) and mashed yams (a bit sweet, still excellent); pork was fabulous. They offer three types of bbq sauces: regular, hot (not too) and tangy (very). Very informal atmosphere, with a view of the Matanzas River. This is the real deal. A big group of us had ordered family meals a few days ago, giving me a taste of several other offerings: ribs are magnificent, mac and cheese good; everything is good. Highly recommended.

Captain's BBQ had been on my list of places to try ever since I saw it described as having the "best pulled pork sandwich in Florida" on one of those "best in your state" lists that pop up on social media all the time, the ones that link to a website you've never heard of. It could be a pay-to-review site. It could have been written by AI. Or maybe it is legit. But it sounded like a cool place anyway, and it was under two hours from home, so I figured I would see for myself. One Friday afternoon when I had finished a job nearby, I drove up A1A to check it out. Being a little ways off the main tourist tracks, the place does have an Old Florida vibe. Palm trees and moss-draped oaks are scattered throughout the expansive dirt parking area. A county park next door, and the Intracoastal Waterway behind the restaurant add to the laid-back feel, inviting one to linger. I walked in the unadorned entrance to the nearly empty counter where orders are placed. Being the middle of the afternoon, there were only a few other customers. I wanted to try the pork, of course, but not wanting a sandwich, I chose to order the pulled pork plate instead, which came with two sides. After ordering, you are directed towards the back of the building where there is another counter to pick up your order. Just out the door from there is a good-sized screened in area where most of the seating is. It was a pleasant day, and the breeze, sunshine and water beyond made for a pretty relaxing atmosphere. I carried my Strofoam plate of pork accompanied by collard greens and cole slaw to a small table, stopping along the way for napkins, utensils and sauce. The review I had read mentioned "a range of homemade sauces", but what they actually have are gallon size jugs of three different Cattlemen's sauces- not a bad thing per se, but they definitely weren't homemade. There were a few smaller bottles of what may have been one type of house-made sauce that I did not try. It was good pork, and sauce wasn't a necessity anyway. However, most of the flavor came from a spice mixture that was applied after the pork had been cooked and pulled. The meat was tender and cooked to perfection, but even though it did appear to be smoked, the flavors usually imparted by smoking were hidden by the added seasoning. Still, it was enjoyable, especially paired with the creamy cole slaw. The collard greens had somewhat of a burnt taste, as if they had been cooked for a long time at a high temperature. They also appeared to have sausage mixed in, a bit of a twist on the usual ham or bacon. I was trying to tell if the unusual taste was just from a strong mixture of seasoning, or if they were actually burnt. I couldn't figure it out, but in any case, they weren't my favorite. I am afraid I can't completely agree with the exuberant praise of the piece I read. However, it was a decent bbq plate, served by friendy folks in a very pleasing setting. When I find myself nearby again, I will find my way here to sample more of the menu, and perhaps then update my rating.

Incredible BBQ. Very traditional, non-fussy dining. Family of 5 all commented it was the best food on vacation so far, including meals costing 3 times as much. Such a nice departure from the resort fare. Everything was ready quick and the view of the water from the patio was a great touch. We will be back for breakfast (which looks amazing). 5 Stars!! fantastic! had the salad with pulled pork. very generous amount of tasty pork on top of mixed greens. ate every morsel. was reluctant to order salad at a bbq place, but was pleasantly surprised. husband had pulled pork sandwich, collard greens and coleslaw. all were excellent. especially liked the soft bun. only wish the sauces were not all sweet. cheesecake best ever! going back tomorrow for the carrot cake. read more

Bbq brisket for me was amazing. Bbq ribs and pulled pork for other adults. They loved it. Pork quesaillas for the kids was well received. One huge problem was that they had several large party orders that they did not tell us about when we ordered. So while we placed our order and watch some people in front of us get their meals and eat and leave we still do not have our food. It was over an hour until we actually got our meals. The manager walked around to a couple of people that we're still waiting like us and he gave them free drinks and things. When he got to us we had a party of 6 and he did not offer us anything except his apologies and a brief explanation that they were catching up and we have our food soon. It would have been a nice touch for him to get us a round of drinks like he had done for others. Or perhaps a small discount for our inconvenience. The food however was absolutely amazing. read more

Had been discouraged by someone to not try this place but we were really in the mood for BBQ so decided to give it shot. We are so glad that we did! It is a very casual, order at the counter, kinda place. Between the two of us we ordered the ribs, pulled pork, and brisket and all of them were delicious! The baked beans were really out of this world and the coleslaw and collard greens were really yummy. Our favorite sauces were the tangy gold and honey BBQ. They also had a great selection of craft bottled beers! We will definitely become regulars!! read more

Definitely not much to look at here but the food is great! I got the pulled pork with baked beans and cole slaw. All of it was fantastic. My only knock on the place is that I usually favor Carolina style sauce, and theirs just seemed a bit weak for my liking. Fortunately they had several other styles of sauce that were well above average - I'd recommend the mustard or sweet BBQ! read more

We stopped here on our way home from St Augustine. The food was just okay. We had the BBQ chicken, Pork, Beef and ribs. It all tasted packaged to us. My husband was disappointed more than me and he eats anything. The view and grounds are beautiful, but the food average. The ribs were hard and very formed. Seemed like out of a package. The best ribs out I think are Texas Roadhouse but again not Smoked. I find that many reviews from Florida are very high on so many restaurants but you cannot go by that. Not sure how many have experienced great home cooked meals as many younger people's taste buds have been conditioned on fast food. Really read thru the reviews and then try these places yourself. I like a place in Melbourne, Fl called Hog Wild. It is a dumpy little place but clean and home cooked BBQ. They make everything there as close to home-made as possible. I have never had a bad meal there. I like the smoked chicken half and I ask for one not too smoked and baked beans and slaw, Very good! read more

Amazing barbecue in a beautiful setting! The ribs were huge and meaty--and there were two sauces available, Kansas City and Memphis. Terrific sides, craft beers... I will definitely return when I'm back in the area. Oh, and it's great for kids too since there's a park adjoining the property. read more

One of the best bbq restaurants in the area. I had the sampler with 3 meats (ribs,brisket,and kielbasa)it was very good. It over looks the intercoastal with great views. They make their ribs with a dry rub,not like some who smother their ribs with bbq sauce,they have 4 different sauces to try and their all good. I will definite go back again read more

Yup, this stuff was really good! Not only is it a great location, but the food was spot on. Loved the ribs, cornbread, cole slaw (not too sweet, just the right blend of vinegar and mayo, fall off the bone chicken. Glad we found this place. Stopped on my way back to West Coast in Kansas City and went to one of their "famous" bbq places and it was awful....so I'll go back to Capt. D's any ol' time and be happy. read more

It filled a void for our family, but not quite the quality we were expecting and way overpriced for portions and taste. Ordered 1/4 chicken, they gave us small thigh and leg. Very little meat in the bone. May be a place for the locals, but next time I'd choose Sonny's. read more

I was part of the group with Mike C. They did a great job feeding about 20-24 hungry lacrosse players and parents. Food was very good. Mike actually called ahead to let them know we were coming right from the tournament which is why they stayed open for us. Owner really appreciated the business and was attentive to everyone's order. read more

Very good beef brisket and decent portion too. Really laid back setup. Counter service and pickup window. Screened porch overlooking river and it is a beautiful spot at sunset. Cornbread muffin was too heavy and wasn't worth finishing. Mac & cheese was lacking. Cucumber salad was good. Plenty of choices for beer too. Will go back for sure. read more

I've went here twice, with my last time being about a year ago. Both times the food was fantastic. First time I had the smoked turkey; because I really don't like ribs that much. I tried one rib from someone I was dining with and it was like what alcoholics call "a moment of clarity". The "clarity" I received is that these ribs are fabulous and there is really no debate as far as what you're going to be ordering the next time you go there. So, I ordered the ribs my second time going there. Their ribs, have little to no grizzle, have beautiful color, and just fall off the bone. They're not caked with sauce either. They have a nice glaze that coats them instead. They do provide barbecue sauce at the table, there are four different bottles. They're all really good, and are more sweet than smokey. One is a sweet sauce, another is a honey mustard barbecue sauce, and the other two looked and tasted similarly and were a much lighter and thinner sauce the former sauces mentioned. I'm telling you, these ribs are like night and day when compared to most places. If you find better ribs, the difference may be subtle. They are in the elite tier, and you will be willing to drive an hour or two if you get the craving. I'm a real picky eater, so during both visits I ordered buttered corn and mac n' cheese as my two sides. You also get a piece of corn bread. Now, the food isn't so pleasing to the eye (except for the ribs, they look just like they taste, amazing), but it definitely will please your palate. I also had one of their cheesecakes during each visit. I ordered the red velvet cheesecake the first time; and the ebony and ivory cheesecake during my last visit. These are also top notch. My only issue with the place, is probably the same thing that gives it it's unique charm, is the atmosphere. When you enter, it doesn't seem like a world class barbecue place. It's also a bait and tackle shop, so it feels more like a convenience store with food served on the side. It's also kind of cramped in the dining areas, and there's some dodging and weaving to get where you want to go. There are no servers, you place your order with the cashier, find an open seat, and wait to be called to retrieve your food. The employees are friendly and more than willing to assist you if you ask or they see that you may need help with something. To be honest, I'd give them 4.5 stars because of how cramped it is, but they only let you choose 4 or 5. The quality of the food wins out over my slight complaint about the dining areas, so a 5 star review it is. read more

Excellent BBQ! Had the pork sandwich and it was great. Big portion. The Carolina sauce and collard greens were some of the best I've had. I stopped in with my family on vacation at the beach and we were worried about it being a restaurant and bait shop :) but it was much cleaner than we expected. Coming from Texas and spending a lot of time eating BBQ all over north and central Texas, I had little hope of getting good BBQ from a place on the Atlantic coast of Florida, I was wrong. Got the combo plate with ribs and sausage. When plate was ready, they threw some brisket on the side for me to try. Pork ribs were tender and had a great flavor, sausage was some of the best I have had, even better than the Czech made Texas hill country sausage. The brisket was melt in your mouth and had a nice smoke ring. All were complimented by a spicy BBQ sauce, one of 3 varieties available. Service was top notch and the view was perfect. Sit inside in the AC or take it out on the screened in porch for some great tree shaded water views. And don't forget the dessert. This is not your typical BBQ dessert! We took home a strawberry and a red velvet cheesecake that was some of the best cheesecake I have ever put in my mouth! The whole family shared the same experience. Worth even a quick drop in for dessert from the refrigerated case by the front door. Don't miss out on this Florida BBQ home run! read more

While it offered traditional Portuguese dishes, it also included Italian options, which felt a little out of place for a restaurant presenting itself as Portuguese cuisine. We started with the octopus in garlic sauce 5/5. It was incredibly tender and packed with flavor. Easily the highlight of the meal. The shrimp in garlic sauce, served with Portuguese chips and white rice, was a bit of a letdown 2/5. There was very little sauce for the shrimp to soak up, and the flavor just didn't hit the mark. The biggest disappointment was the grilled Portuguese sausage 0/5. It was fatty, cold when served, and honestly inedible. George tried three times to warm it up for us. What made it more frustrating was watching other tables receive theirs flambéed tableside. Ours came out pre-cut and at what felt like refrigerated temperature. When we asked why ours wasn't served the same way, we were told that presentation style costs an additional $6. Really? I had the sangria, which was enjoyable though slightly on the sweeter side 3.5/5. Overall, I truly wish this experience had been better, especially considering the drive to Palm Coast from Jacksonville. I was hoping for a taste of home, but unfortunately, it fell short this time.

Each day they post a "name of the day" on Facebook where someone with that name gets a free donut or ice cream from their sister shop. I recently grabbed takeout from this barbecue gem, and I'm still thinking about how good everything was! From the moment I opened the containers, the aroma alone was mouthwatering -- and every bite lived up to it. The meats were cooked to absolute perfection -- tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. I would love Captain's BBQ even if it wasn't sitting on the Matanzas river. They have the best pulled pork and brisket I've ever eaten. All the sides I've tried have been very flavorful, the buttered corn, homemade cole slaw, collard greens, smoked baked beans and mac & cheese, but that's not all of them. The place is pretty. They have docks and a boat ramp so the restaurant is accessible from the river or road. The boat ramp is also entertaining while you are eating.
