I love Captains Pizza. I never hate it and all so I dont mind the greasey little crap...

Captain's Pizza is the kind of place you go when you're not trying to impress anyone--you're just hungry and maybe a little emotionally exhausted. And honestly? That's exactly what makes it great. The inside décor hasn't changed since the 80s, and neither have most of the customers. It's a cozy time warp filled with vinyl booths and the comforting hum of people who gave up on trends and leaned hard into personality. There's this older couple that's always there, drinking beer out of a pitcher like it's their second full-time job. They lovingly swear at each other like two pirates celebrating their anniversary. It's bizarrely heartwarming. Like, if The Notebook ended with a bar fight and karaoke. The food? Let's call it classic neighborhood fare with moments of greatness. The kids might say it's "mid," but I say it's dependable--like your dad's old minivan that smells weird but never breaks down. That chicken souvlaki platter, though? It's a thing of beauty. Juicy, flavorful, perfectly seasoned--if they ever try to take it off the menu, I will riot, politely. My wife gets it too because we're both smart and creatures of habit. Our kids split between the chicken fingers (always crispy, no complaints) and the pizza (thick crust, decent flavor, good for soaking up regret and ranch dressing). The waitresses are friendly and clearly overworked, but they still manage to smile and remember your drink order. Heroes in sneakers. Captain's is the kind of place that doesn't care about Instagram likes. It's about real food, real people, and real weird little moments you end up talking about later. It's not trying to be cool--it's just trying to feed you. And sometimes, that's exactly what you need. Would I recommend it? Heck yes. Yesterday was not my cheat day. Lol. It's usually on the weekends but I really wanted a pizza and I didn't wanna go far so I decided on Captain's Pizza and I'm glad I did. I haven't been to Captain's in years and the pizza is just the way I remembered it when my mother used to bring my brother and I to the Captain's in Bridgeport. The pizza was delicious, crispy, and had that buttery thin crust that I love. The only thing I have to say is that I ordered a half bacon and there was not enough bacon. I know food costs have gone up, but... This was just wrong on three or four different levels. This small margarita pizza cost us $17!! The small cheese we ordered along side of it looked like it took more work to make. And it was TINY! I mean, $17???? Wife called to check and they stood by the price. "It's a specialty pizza". 6 or 7 slices of tomato, some garlic, and a few pieces of burned basil. $17!! We've been customers for ever here, but no longer. Too upscale for our budget. I've been going to Captain's pizza for years..since my Teen years. They have had various locations through the years and some have been better than others. So this one, in Shelton, I just started going to a few years ago. I find both good and bad points here. Let's start with the good. Yummy pizza. Their pizza is sort of addicting. Captains in general is sort of love it or hate it. I took my buddy to this one and she loved it. The fact they deliver is also a major plus. And their pizza..it is sort of addicting. Yes, it's greasy and oily but so good. And if you order a small pie, you can finish it yourself because the slices are smaller than a large and there is something about the pizza where you just want to keep eating it. Location..easy to find..in a shopping plaza. Staff..great staff, friendly always plenty of seating. I have never gone here where I had to wait. Prices..they are pretty good. Now for the negative: I was disturbed to read another reviewer's story about getting sick from here. I have heard through the years, stories about, not this Captains specifically, but others, being not so clean. So frankly all that makes me not as eager to dine here as I would be otherwise. Also..the place never seems to have alot of people dining here. Maybe it is more of a to go. But I just find the atmosphere kind of gloomy. Most of the time, I've dined here it is almost empty. So there is not much atmosphere and is not where I really want to find myself on a saturday evening. I wish they would brighten it up a bit. So that's my humble opinion on Captain's. Like many places, there are pluses and minuses. I do love the taste of the pizza but for the reasons mentioned above, I am not a frequent customer. read more

I order from captains like 4 times a week. Today I get a pizza and the grease is soaked through the box. Pizza fell apart!!! The chicken wings are cold like taken outta the fridge. I called just to say hey please I understand it's busy but the guys in the back are not watching what they send out. Not wanting to talk to a manager just to tithe girl who picks up and man what a NASTY attitude. Not omg sorry, just a want to talk to the manager? Prior to the pandemic we used to go here a lot. During pandemic there were issues with personnel, hours and restrictions just like everyone else had. The food is good but since they have reopened they no longer have breakfast on the weekends like they used to. We were there every week faithfully. We no longer go as much because of the breakfast. I order from Captain's all the time. Had 2 addresses associated with my phone number only because I was at my dad's on and off over last 18 months because he was dying of Covid. Unfortunately, dad passed! That was February 17th, today I ordered dinner for my son who lives with my dad(recently deceased) to thank him for all he did for his grandfather, I specifically gave my son's name address and phone number. They delivered to my house in Shelton. I am under the weather but wanted a thank you reminder for my son: order taker was told deliver to xxxxxxxxxxx, and phone number xxxxxxx, my son's, they delivered to my house instead. I called them to let them know they delivered to wrong house. I correctly told them right address and phone number but because my 12 year old accepted the pizza they refused to acknowledge their error. Even worse, the order taker denied phone number and delivery address. They said because my 12 year old accepted pizza they were off the hook. I'm under the weather and had to drive pizza to my son whom I paid Captain's to deliver to. When asked for compensation they refused saying we accepted pizza, I did not accept(as ordering individual who is under the weather) but my 12 year old daughter innocently. When calling Captain's to make this right, they refused basically too bad your 12 year old accepted pizza. How does this change I told them specific address and my son's name and phone number. Basically was told too bad; so being sick I had to drive pizza to my son possibly spreading my illness. They were mean on the phone and said too bad. I said ask order taker, she lied! They will receive my business no longer, shameful for the price of one pizza instead of doing the honorable thing they basically said "____ you"! One of the best spots !!! Here is great for pizza and breakfast on the weekends. We always order pizza from here and it's soooo yummy ! We usually get the sausage or pepperoni topping. When you warm up the left overs the next day in the oven , it tastes just as yummy and fresh as if it was just made. Def give this spot a try. Now the breakfast is good as well, it's only served on sat and Sunday's. Everything is pretty cheap and you get a lot of food with the breakfast platters. Will never order from them again. Couldn't get thru on the phones so we used GrubHub. So, placed the order thru Grubhub should have been delivered within an hour. No sign, no status change on the app from "preparing order". Couldn't get thru on the phone for awhile (again) finally did. Asked about the order, and was told they would have to go in the kitchen and call back which they never called back. We called GrubHub who reached out to captains - was told it would be another hour and a half. That equals 2.5 hours for 1 pizza and 1 salad. We cancelled and was refunded. I had DJs delicious pizza within 15 minutes in my house. Absolutely unacceptable! And the fact that Captains never even called us back is HORRIBLE service. Also, side note: because Captains has their own delivery service we were told by GrubHub that Captains uses their own drivers for these orders. I've ordered here a couple times but this last time turned me off completely. I placed an online order for a salad. Ate almost the entire thing and then discovered a wet, soggy crumpled up piece of paper towel at the bottom of my salad. Absolutely disgusting. Definitely wasn't mine since they never give any napkins with takeout orders! Honestly don't know how someone can be so unaware when making someone's else's food. Captains Pizza is a great greek-style pizza restaurant that has pretty much become a home-away-from-home for me. The staff is friendly and helpful, the pizza is tasty (though greasy), and the food in general is always good. This is not fine dining, to be sure, but it is a good place for family and friends to gather and have a good time. Especially good if you have children. There is also a nice bar area with several flatscreen TVs, if you're into that kind of thing. read more

I love hot dogs. Do you? Yes, you sure do. Well, let me let you in on a little secret...the best dog in town isn't served at Duchess, it's found right here at Captain's Pizza. The crisp footlong Captain's dog comes served on a slightly soggy 9 inch bun with your choice of toppings. Mustard, relish, ketchup(if you suck), sauerkraut, and onions are available, plus maybe more if you inquire. They'd probably throw some of that special Greek white sauce on it if you ask nicely. This review is based only on the Captain's Pizza hot dog, and their delivery service. I don't really care much for their other food, it's nothing special and semi over priced. However, if it's a hot dog kind of day, trust me. Go here. When i called in my order they said it would take an hour and it only took 53 minutes, so -1 star for inaccuracy. read more

When I want some greasy, cheesy and satisfying pizza, I come to Captain's in Shelton. I have never been disappointed here. They serve Greek-style pizza, Greek specialties and traditional Italian entrees here. I go back and forth between a pizza or the chicken and broccoli with pasta. All entrees come with a side salad or soup. If you order a pizza with one or two toppings, you might be disappointed in the lack of toppings, but order a pizza with more than three to get your money's worth. I have had the melanzane (eggplant, garlic and basil), the veggie and caesar salad pizzas many times. Mostly I get take-out and when I arrive, I usually have to wait maybe 5-10 extra minutes inside for my order. The staff are always nice to me and have my order correct. read more

I frequently visit Captain's pizza at their Bridgeport location so I'm familiar with their pizza. This is my first time at this location and while my waitress was very nice the service was quite slow. It took way too long for such a simple order. We had two medium pizzas and one small house special. The chicken ranch pizza was DELICIOUS. It was covered in chicken, bacon and drizzled in ranch dressing. I have the restaurant three stars because it took forever for the food to actually come out and there is a terrible draft every time the front door opened. read more

Pizza is one of the best in the area. It's not Italian style but for what it is, Greek style, it IS the best. They even offer a thin crust option and score big with it. Thin or regular, the crust is delicious from first bite to the end. When I order pizza from other venues, I usually leave some of the crusts, but with a Captain's pie, the crust is textured and made perfect. This is my favorite restaurant. I've never had anything bad from Captains and eat somewhere between 2 and 6 meals there a week. The best part of the experience is the staff. Most of the wait people have been there for many years and are eager to please. The owner is on site most of the time too, so there is good supervision. The decor could use to be updated, but the place is generally clean and and pleasant. Some of the booths do not move, so it could be tight if two larger customers want to dine on opposite sides of a booth. There are some tables in the rear though so larger customers can be accommodated. read more

AWFUL! Where to begin? This was the worst experience I have ever had with a pizza restaurant before. The delivery took well over an hour to get here. They didn't even write my address down correctly-- told the delivery driver to go to an entirely different town. When he arrived, the food was cold and was not good. This was the worst, most unprofessional margarita pizza I have ever had. They do not know how to run a professional business. None of the employees listen to or respect the manager. When I called last night for a refund, they said nobody was available to offer this to me, and that I should call back in the morning to speak with their manager, Greg. When I called this morning, I was met with hostility, screaming, and condescension. He would refuse to listen to me at all. Greg told me "you try to call any restaurant in Connecticut with this story and see how you do." He did not believe that I was a customer-- despite him remembering my order! Insanity. All he understood was rage and aggression. I had informed him I took pictures of the pizza I could provide for him, and bring it in this morning to show him we had hardly eaten it, and he said "what good would that do?" and nearly cursed me out. DISGUSTING! This food is OVERPRICED and UNPROFESSIONAL. I will NEVER come here again. Do not come here!!!! Not once did he apologize for my unfortunate experience. Super late delivery placed order at 1:11pm and didn't get my delivery until 2:45pm pizza is cold

tonight me and my buddy called to order 1 large pizza. on their site it says you can order 2 large pizzas for $22 if you pick it up. When I called the woman on the phone she immediately had an attitude. I asked about the deal and I was told that if you buy 2 large cheese pizzas you can get it for $22 and if you add toppings it cost more. So i asked how much for gourmet pizza is that included in the deal but cost extra? I was told it cost $22. I asked again to be sure and the woman with an attitude said yes it cost $22. so I placed my order for 2 gourmet pizzas and before I got off the phone I asked once more to confirm. The women huffs at me and says yes $22 Plus tax. when I got to the restaurant they told me it was $42 so I told them them what happened. the owner behind the desk became hostile and very disrespectful. He lied about what it said on the website. It says nothing about gourmet pizza not included and insulted my ability to read. he then called the employee over and she lied about the whole thing and he told me she was new and he would talk to her only after getting mad at me. very rude!! We payed for one pizza and no one apologized. I liked this place as a kid but will never do business with them again And I urge people to do the same read more

It's sad that only being .8 miles from us, it took them over hour and a half to get us our order. I noticed I placed the order without indicating what was my room number. I called the, immediately. The driver still had to call me twice to confirm the address was a hotel and then call for the room number. When we finally got the order, no plastic utensils or napkins were included. The best Greek Pizza in the state! This is my favorite pizza place. Everything about it is exactly the way greek pizza should be. Delicious, greasy, perfect crust, sauce is awesome; I do not know how they manage to make a thin crust Greek pie so beautifully golden brown. It's sooooo perfect! as I don't like a crust too thick. I see negative reviews.......these people had to be expecting Italian style pizza. Greek style is completely different. Not for everyone! Does not mean it deserves a bad review. Before you Diss - a Tip- wait till it cools down, it actually tastes better. I am not kidding, the best Greek Pizza Is captains Shelton I really miss the captains that was located on RT 25 in Monroe. That restaurant used a different recipe. But, if I had to choose which one stayed open, it would be Shelton they were and still are the best. My parents used to take us to the Captains on Boston Ave in Bridgeport every Friday night for family pizza night growing up in the 70's & 80's. During the 90's we lived near and frequented the captains in Monroe and country pizza. (Also Greek pie , still there, country pizza can be hit or miss. But, when it's a hit- a damn good pie! ) Today, I don't live in the area, but when I'm in town, I prefer captains in Shelton. read more

I ordered a gluten free Chicken Marsala pizza today. Double checked online that chicken had * next to it denoting gluten free topping. I was halfway through my "gluten free" pizza when I realized there appeared to be batter on the chicken. We called immediately and the woman confirmed it's "lightly battered". Then I asked why she wouldn't specify that when I ordered it gluten free. She said well you didn't tell me it was an allergy. Really? To be honest it's not an allergy, it's an auto-immune disease which will cause me a severe reaction for days....but I wouldn't expect this less than brilliant woman to comprehend that. Favorite go-to pizza for takeout or delivery! Delivery guys are always polite when we aren't feeling like picking up, but when we do pickup, Lisa is super friendly behind the bar so we can have a quick beer and chat before we go.
