Massimino's pizza is nothing to write home about. It's good when you're hungry, but Ansonia, Derby, and Seymour have some of the best pizza in CT, so the competition is fierce. Santini's, Zuppardi's Express, Roseland Pizza, Roma, and Zoe's are just some of the pizza spots that provides a much better experiences. The Valley is definitely a contender for pizza capital of the world, threating New Haven's reign. With that said, Massimino's needs to up their A game if they want to compete. Live in the area and wanted some Italian food! Bestie and I ordered take out from here. The restaurant itself is very clean and very nice inside. I definitely want to have dinner here with my boyfriend. We ordered Penne Al Vodka with chicken cutlet and a meatball sub. The pasta was delicious! Really enjoyed the sauce. The entree came with a salad which was good and I'm a fan of the house dressing. The meatball sub was really good as well. The meatballs were tender and full of flavor. They have some large portions. Some good some not so good. Pizza was so so. Soft like it was undercooked. No crisp no crunch to the pizza. Chicken parm entree was ehh. I realize that I ordered a meat lovers, but even this amount of "squish" is not what I'd expect of a well done pizza. The flavor was boring, and even borders just plain bad. I hate to say it, but for pizza... this was some of the worst I've ever had in Connecticut. This includes the chains. Moving on, the pasta. Freaking delicious. Holy amazingness. Hubby and I ordered here for date night. My husband got the chicken parm, it was good I'd rate it 4.5 out of 5. Nice thick cut of chicken breast and cooked nicely, not dry. I got the lasagna, rated 1 out of 5. This was the worst lasagna I'd ever eaten before. First of all, clearly frozen. My 2nd complaint was that it was 90% cheese which isn't horrible but where's the meat? The noodles were abnormally thick and overall it just wasn't good. Came here for dinner last night, and though the food was pretty good, a few things occurred that tainted our experience. Our waitress was nice, though she forgot to tell us the specials, and when we asked how many meatballs or sausage came for a side, she answered two. My parents ordered one side of meatballs and one side of sausage and expected that as the menu stated, it would be $2 for each order. Our meals came out and they were very good, except that my mom took a bite into the sausage and it was ice cold. We told our waitress, and a woman who we're assuming to be the manager apologized and brought out a new order of sausage, which was much better. Our check came, and we were a little surprised to see they didn't comp the sausage for their error, but we let it go. Then, we realized that we were charged $4 instead of the $2 per order of meatballs and sausage we were expecting. We looked up the menu and saw it read "+ $2 each" and realized it meant per meatball or per sausage. We also let this go, but we wished when we asked the waitress how many came in an order she had explained that it was $2 for each individual one. We paid and when my mom went to go sign the receipt, she realized that a $2.50 "checkout fee" was then added to the total. We had no idea what that was for, and we go out to eat plenty and have never seen that before. We had been eating outside, so on our way out my mom walked up to the counter and asked what the checkout fee was for. The woman who we thought was the manager from earlier answered that this is a charge for paying with a credit card. However, it's illegal in the state of Connecticut to charge someone based on their method of payment, and when my mom told this to her, the woman stated that it's posted on their cash register and on a window in the front of the restaurant. Okay... but it's illegal, and also, who's looking out for a posting like that? At this point my mom also mentioned the misunderstanding over the meatball/sausage discrepancy, and she treated us like we were stupid and said "no, they're not one dollar each. You're telling me you would have only ordered one?" Completely unnecessary. Maybe we would have, maybe we wouldn't. The woman turned to the girl who was our waitress who honestly thought two had come to an order, and she said, "it's one an order. Now you know". The woman was quite rude and sassily told us "she would be happy to refund us the $2", and we said that's not necessary... but it would've been nice to know. The attitude of the woman is what tainted this experience so badly. Everything else was forgivable, especially because the food was quite good. It's too bad. read more

Shocked at all these negative reviews! I've visited here a handful of times and never had a bad experience. The restaurant is downtown Ansonia and offers indoor and outdoor seating in addition to banquet space upstairs. The staff is always very friendly. For appetizers we have enjoyed the fried calamari and garlic bread. Both decent size portions and very good. For entrees I have only had the linguine with clams in a white sauce because it's THAT good! They use real clams in the shell and add lots of garlic - excellent. My husband has had their lasagna, zuppa de pesce, and chicken parm. Each time he enjoyed the meal but was not overly impressed, specifically with their red sauce. They offer a nice wine list as well. I've had their Chianti a few times and really enjoyed it. Overall, great place for a relaxed Italian dinner. I will continue to visit here. read more

Our first visit at this new location. Loved the new improved restaurant and menu choices. They didn't disappoint us. Great portions. From the x-large "the works" pizza, to the chicken Marsala, clams linguine, and traditional cheese calzone, salads and garlic bread. We were stuffed. It was all soo good. Of course had to bag up the leftovers to enjoy tomorrow. Wished we'd have left room for dessert as the cakes on display looked really delicious also. Will be returning next trip to try out the other dinner dishes and pizzas. The owners are super nice and the restaurant was clean and very inviting. I recommend highly. read more

If you are looking for really good Italian food, then you have to visit Massimino's Pizzeria. They have healthy portions all around including the appetizer. The prices are also reasonable. They have everything from Pizza to Italian dinners; even burgers and sandwiches for those that want American food. Ordered the Cold Italian Antipasto & Fried Calamari which were delicious. The fried calamari was cooked perfectly so airy and light. Cold Italian Antipasto was enough to feed 4 people and still have leftovers. Dinners - Eggplant Rollatini & Linguini & Clams were so flavorful that you could not get it in your mouth fast enough. The new location is very nice inside & the staff is fantastic. Had dinner here for the first time. It is a beautifully redone restaurant. Loved the decor and friendly staff. We had a good meal. The salad and bread were the best parts for me. It is a very basic salad but the balsamic vinaigrette was tasty. And you could really taste the roasted garlic on the crisp bread. Very enjoyable. The meals we got were good. Nothing to "write home about" but nothing bad either. Hubby said the chicken parm didn't have a lot of flavor. My son got the Alfredo and he said it was "ok". I got the tortellini and again...good but not great. Overall, it was a good meal and it fit the price. Yikes, I'm laughing, kind of, because I just read through the other reviews...and I cannot believe how similar my BAD experience was to a bunch of the others, from the dreadful food, to the nasty owner and manager, who may be a daughter (not sure). Unbelievable. We are moving to Ansonia from CA (land of really bad pizza), but I'm from NY (land of really great pizza), and had hoped that we had found our new spot. Nope. Hideous. Horrid. Revolting. Allow me to explain. We stopped in for a slice to test the waters, because I wanted to take my family out for a birthday dinner (father and sister, same day), this past May. My slice was okay, fresh, nice topping, although quite bland. My husband frowned. No taste, he said. Okay, everybody's buds are different. We made the reservation for five people for the following weekend. Servings were...big. Reports of pasta being "bland, nothing special, didn't like, lasagna was swimming in soupy sauce, marsala gray and tasteless (what happened to the red marsala wine?)...ugh. I had a calzone and it was huge, and it was good. Desserts fared better, with some kind of mouse cake being the best (sorry, forgot the flavor). Service was nice, although they put us at a terrible table, which was smack in the sun, with the laser beam sizzling us in the eyes during the whole meal, so badly that we kept getting up to get out of it, moving chairs to try to escape the heat and all...and they said, "yeah, we don't have window shades yet". Well. Okay then. Hmmmm.......so, we finished and left. Fast forward to a few days ago, and my husband and I went there for pizza, which I was really craving. Hoping for something terrific, delicious, etc., I got....not that. Okay, so, I like white pizza. I'm from NY. White pizza has ricotta on it, in NY (in my experience, anyway, and I'm no spring chicken) So, in CT, or Naples, or wherever the owner is from, white pizza has no ricotta, only mozzarella. Okay, my mistake. These old eyes misread the menu. Oh, this was called "Chef's Special Pizza". Uh...special. Especially terrible. Yes, that must be what they meant. It was supposed to have mozzarella, sweet Italian sausage, fresh garlic and spinach. Mozzarella..tasteless. I adore mozzarella (the fresh kind) and this was like, "is there any on here? I don't taste it!". Next...spinach. I tried to scrape it off because it tasted like bitter lawn. Okay, so I've never really grazed on my lawn, but this is how I imagine it to taste (you know, smell can tell you how something will taste and this spinach was nasty, so off it came). Next...sweet Italian sausage. Little chunks of something I assume was the sausage, but you could not tell by the taste. Or lack thereof. And the garlic...something was making me screw up my face. Ah yes, the bitter taste of overcooked garlic. Oh wait, the crust...or should I say, bitter, cardboard, dry cracker. You could not even begin to fold this one (New Yorkers know how to fold and eat a slice, am I right?) before it snapped and fell into a bunch of dry shards. I took bites, hoping and waiting for it to get tasty. But it didn't. My husband put his down before I gave up and said he couldn't eat it. I finally gave up. I motioned for the woman I assumed was the manager and said "may we have the check please?" She didn't say what any manager of any restaurant I have ever been to in my 56 years has or would or should have said, which might have been "oh my, is something wrong?" So I continued, explaining that I made a mistake thinking there would be ricotta on the pizza, but even with that error on my part (you see, I did admit my mistake), we simply did not like the taste of the pizza. She walked away, I assumed to get the check. No offer of "can I get you something else?", which any other manager or server would have said, in order to please a customer who is obviously not eating a big, almost totally intact pizza. We sat there for about 10 minutes. Nothing. Then the Big M Man himself, I believe the owner, came to the table, and I anticipated some type of apology, offer, anything, even a slice? Nope. Instead we sat there as he gave us a lecture/tirade on why his pizza was authentic and delicious and we should love it because all the ingredients are fresh, and it was cooked longer because the sausage had to be cooked, etc. (never mind that it dried out the crust terribly and overcooked the garlic to a point of bitterness). He boasted about where he came from, but quite honestly, his English was hard to understand (and I was an ESL teacher for years, and very good at understanding people's accents and intentions, yet I missed more than half of the tirade). He then asked me where I came from, so I said NY. He kept asking me questions, which made no sense. He left. After another five minutes, asking for the check again, the manager came with a curt "here's your check" and walked away. Three strikes. OUT. ZERO STARS. Save your $. read more

I have not ordered from them sometime. Then when the pizza arrived . I remembered why. Looks small in the box not properly rolled out. When I lifted the pizza up it was burned on the bottom. I called and was told by a nice young lady that they would send another one right away. Then I got a hostel phone call from the owner wanted me to dig the burned pizza out of the garbage and send back to him. They knew that pizza was burnt when it was put into the box. After arguing with him for several minutes he finally said he would send me another one. Even not burned it was poorly made.By comparison . To any pizza that I have had in sometime. I also relied on the 5-star reviews just as Erika S. did, and what a mistake that was. I ordered a large cheese pizza and an eggplant parm grinder. I was surprised how cheap the order was ($10 for a large pie and $4.25 for a grinder). I just figured they get a lot of repeat business, and they also operate out of Ansonia. I just received my order a few minutes ago, and I did a quick taste test. I wanted to give it a real chance so I took a slice of pizza and some of the grinder. Let's just say I still have an aftertaste. The pizza dough is just creepy. I took a bite out of it, and the facial expression I made was similar to when my Mother referred to the endangered bird as a "bald headed eagle". The point is I knew something was wrong, but I just couldn't figure it out. The crust has a texture similar to something you should only heat up once but reheated it again to save money. Also, it just tasted stale. My slice was sloppy, greasy, and had no flavor. I'm quite thrifty, but even I am teetering on the decision to throw the whole pizza out. The grinder was OK, but the bread was barely toasted. It was almost like they pulled the bread out of the bag and just put the ingredients inside. While "keeping it local" with my family for the weekend, we decided to get some take out. I used my trusty Yelp app to look up Massimino's and learned that it had 3 five star reviews... I was sold. We ordered up two large pies. One large mozzarella and one large mozz, peppers, onions & mushrooms. This pizza was not good. It was extremely greasy, the crust was all wrong, and I'd like to ask them who they get their ingredients from because nothing was fresh at all. I live across the street from Massimino's. While I have never frequented the establishment, there was a man who I assumed to be the owner approached me in his gold Taurus. He accosted me for attempting to throw my trash away in the public trash can. He said, "you can't do that". After listening to him and walking away with my trash, he proceeded to follow me to my car. He cursed at me, asking me if I had a problem, as if he wanted to engage in a physical altercation. I am a black man, and I was wondering if he would have gotten out of his car, scolded me, and after me obliging to his request, still proceeded to accost me for attempting to use the trash can. People witnessing then event asked the man to return to his car, but he proceeded to incite the situation asking me if I had a problem while I was getting into my car. My point in this review is to ask if Massimino's is an anti-black establishment - please be clear about that. Because if the berating I experienced trying to throw away trash, and then still carrying the trash with me to my car is normal, then please make it clear that black people are not allowed within a certain parameter. Because the overt drive up, accosting, and physical display done by a man in a gold ford Taurus is not human decency, and might quite possibly be harassment and a show of criminalizing anti-black sentiment. read more

I visited from California today while visiting my mother in the hospital. What great company the owner was and also other owners or employee there. I believe I met Mossimino himself. Fantasic pizza and I mean the best I ever ate. Even gave my grandmothers pizza a little memory for the moment. I just want to say thank you guys. Manja. Chow. I don't want to give this place a bad review by any means. I've ordered from them plenty of times in the past and been very pleased. I'm not sure if they still offer it, but they used to have a seafood pizza that was incredibly good. I ordered it for a birthday party once and was impressed. My family also has ordered from this place many times because it is a family owned business and owned by actual Italians, not Albanians or Greeks (not that their pizza is bad by any means, just nice to get the real deal). This past time when a friend and I were in the mood for pizza and we decided to actually go there in person...well...things got rather discombobulated. I completely forgot that they don't take credit/debit cards here, so we told the owner's daughter (I believe) that we would be right back). We were gone, I guess, a little too long, so we came back and no pizza was made. The owner explained that since we weren't back within 15 minutes, he assumed we weren't coming back at all. Okay, this much was a mild misunderstanding and my friend and I took responsibility for our lack of planning, so we waited again for our pizza. We ordered a chicken and broccoli pizza, and I don't know if it was because the guy rushed it or what the problem could have been, but it was not as good as I remembered. It wasn't abominable by any means, but by this point, I was kind of kicking myself for not going somewhere just as good that accepted cards to save us the stress. In any case, since it was just this isolated incident, I don't want to discourage anyone from ordering from Massimino's. The owner's daughter was a very sweet and attentive waitress, and the owner is a decent guy who usually makes very good pizza. I think he even sells individual slices, which is nice for anyone walking around downtown Ansonia. Since there are so many pizza places to choose from in this area, it can get a little overwhelming to pick which one to patronize, so I couldn't help but put in my vote of confidence for this pizzeria. read more

Excellent NYC style pizza sauce. It's very good quality pizza. The best in the valley. My only complaint is they don't take credit card but otherwise for quality they are really good. Went there for dinner with my mom and uncle for their birthdays and we will not be going back. Our waiter (and probably the only server working on a Saturday night) was rude right off the bat to my uncle when he asked if they had scotch replying in a very snarky voice "This is not a bar" yet most restaurants do tend to have actual liquor. After drinks were resolved, we placed our order everything seemed fine, we got our appetizer for the table, but then our complimentary garlic bread and salad that comes with the meal NEVER arrived. It was not until we got our food that we even realized it, so we asked for it and the server was like "well do you want it now or after dinner". Now I dont know about you but to my family salad and garlic bread are no dessert. We asked for it now and when the salad arrived it looked like someone took a handful of lettuce and just tossed it on a plate to get something out to us, then because the tables for 4 ppl are so freaking small we had no room for anything on the table and started putting things on the window ledge. We didnt even get the garlic bread until we were basically done eating, then my mother and I had ordered the balsamic dressing for our salads but we were never told it was just literally balsamic vinegar that you put on yourself (that I don't mind but tell people its vinegar and oil dont make it seem like a vinaigrette). Now the food! the food was not even all that good. I ordered the chicken parm and for the most part it was ok, but then the second half was all breading and no chicken, then what was chicken was dry and inedible. My mother and uncle got chicken piccata it was soupy and just over all tasted like it was missing something. Because of all the issues we had one of the managers came over and said "We are so sorry, I took a little off the bill" once we got home we looked and she literally took 2 dollars off to round the meal down to $100 even. Needless to say we will not be going back again. The prices are high for a small local business and the food and service are def not worth the price you pay. Massiminos only saving grace is their pizza other than that we wont be going back to actual dinners. read more
