I wanted to like this place but, alas. Pros: sweet waitress, young, polite and efficient. Great fries! Cons: dirty! With a nice view outside, this place is missing an opportunity to capitalize. I wish I could give Captains Wheel a no-star zero rating. My birthday was fast approaching and my husband saw the Captain's Wheel online menu featuring their fish n' chips made with homemade beer battered hand breaded "fresh" cod fillets. They proudly stated it was their "best seller on the menu." We were anxious to spend my birthday enjoying Captains Wheel fish n' chips! When we arrived, we were seated next to dirt-streaked windows that ruined any view of the boats that were docked in the nearby small marina. When the server took our order, I happily explained today was my birthday. She responded with a blank stare, then shrugged and walked away. When we were served, our "fresh" cod fillets were anything but fresh and the beer batter had a hard cardboard texture. If that wasn't bad enough, one of my husband's fillets was actually missing half of the fish and extra batter was used to cover it up. It is our feeling that the cod fillets were previously frozen, thawed out, then reheated and labeled as "fresh." Thank you, Captain Wheel for giving me a truly forgettable birthday,!! read more

We read the reviews and came somewhat reluctantly, but found the experience to be great. Its not a fancy place, to be sure, but we loved the local feel and the fantastic view of water, marina, and mountains. Think Alaska or any other authentic working class marina- that's the vibe you'll get. We ordered the fish&chips and a club sandwich. Both were delicious and large portions. if seen a few bad places in my life this one taps them all what a shame they have a million dollar view. Experience when you walk in is 4 people at the bar one of them looks to be the manager / owner not one person will greet you and the confusion only starts growing if they are open or not. You will seat yourself down and notice that all windows at chest level have not been wiped not even accidentally for what it appears to be 20 years but that's the list of your problems because at all times you are staying occupied waring whether your chair it's going to snap in half or not because of how wobbly it is including the table. Once you get over all that you expect the manager / owner to come to your table because there is no other person that appears to be the waiter or waitress but your way wrong the person you just glanced four minutes before behind the bar taking alcohol shots with the clients is not one of the workers but from the smell It appears to be either the local drunk or just a guy having way too much fun on his day off lol. John dow comes over with two menus one menu was empty inside the other one looked like it got sneezed on for the last 20 years probably by the same person that's been contemplating, whether he should clean the windows or not. John dow also introduced himself as not one of the workers, but just a client so to there defense I did not have the balls to sit a minute longer, and try how the food was I guess I was not in the mood of playing Russian roulette, whether I would get sick or not. read more

Stumbled upon this little town while checking out Bayview, ID it looked lonely and it's a little old inside but what better then a super tiny town, with literally post card views that are out of this world. You're right on the water. We saw 4 bald eagles and they circled the area for great amount of time. Ok to start my review, Atmosphere is honestly great I'm sure this place is jam packed during he summer, mind you it was a cold day today of 30 degrees. The waitress was great!! She was sweet and honestly on top of all of our orders the whole time. We all got the fish and chips plate and it was amazing!! The fish was flavored perfectly and tasted great. The fries had great taste as well!!! If you want to eat lunch with a view, great people and great atmosphere eat here. This place definitely earns 5 stars!! The last time we were here the pieces of fish were twice as big and the coleslaw was fresh. This time, for $14, the fish pieces were much smaller, like smaller then a dollar bill and thin! The coleslaw was old and tasteless. The best thing was the French Fries. The waitress was talking to another customer, she must of known him and was talking loudly and using the"F" word!! Was disappointed in the food this time. We had fish and chips and ice tea. The tea was so bad (who ruins tea) we couldn't drink it. It tasted old and a very strange taste to it. I think they reused teabags. Anyway, waitress took it away and brought water. When we paid the bill, we had to pay for the tea. The fish was overcooked and dry. We had clam chowder that was just on the verge of being sour. We went on a Monday, so I think everything was left over from the weekend. I'll think twice before returning. read more

I would have had better service and food if we would have stopped for Lemonade and peanut butter sandwiches at the kids stand up the road. Total dive bar. Saw two fights while we were there. A patron was puking outside the front door when we arrived. Interior smells of stale cigarettes and has the looks to match. The flooring is unstable and dangerous. The food was barely sub-par, but it did make me feel awful for the rest of the evening. I was embarrassed that we chose to come here. Full bar, nice patio in back and sides, decent bar food, cheap drinks. If you're in Bayview, this is one of maybe 2 or 3 bars to choose from, and it's the one we ended up at most often. It's large inside, with lots of seating, a semi-closed-off porch area, and outdoor tables on the lawn in back. Most of the tables have a marina view, but we liked sitting outside in the sunshine. Drink prices seemed pretty cheap (maybe $4-5 for wells?) and their dinner menu is solid, mostly burgers and sandwiches with a couple of fish and steak choices. We were mostly there at off hours - during the afternoon or for late dinner - but it does seem to be the "quieter" bar in town, if you just want to grab a meal or drinks with friends. read more

As I'm sitting there trying to eat this microwaves meal, the are wheeling in this cooler in a tight space between me and the wall. I tried to make a reservation by calling in, and this is how they answered the phone "What?" With a rude tone. I told her we wanted to see about making a reservation and she cut me off stating " I'm busy right now and we aren't taking reservations for tonight or tomorrow " and then she hung up on me. We have a sailboat nearby and always stop when we can. Service is friendly and laid back. In the couple dozen times we've eaten there, we've never been disappointed. If I could leave them less than 1 star I would. Waitress arrived at table chewing gum with mouth open and poor attitude for starters. Surly greeting. One other table of customers in entire place. Took drink orders and water requests. Never arrived. 2nd waitress took drink orders. Original waitress took appetizer order and a second request for water. Came back and asked if we were eating there. Said we would order main course after appetizers. She stated " we usually take entire order at once " appetizers of hot wings and nachos arrived. Nachos were terrible, a 3rd grader could do better. Wings arrived no sauce or dip of any kind, basically fried wings. Asked about sauce for hot wings, she got snotty and said " well if you ask for it we out sauce on or with" whaaat? Hot wings??? Requested water 3rd time. Wings taken away by 2nd waitress and arrived back with sauce. Followed immediately by entree of fish n chips and fish tacos, resulting in all food at once. Snotty waitress left dirty dishes from appetizers ( we had to ask 2 times for silverware and plates) piled in center of table, requested water ( still had not arrived) again. Remember the movie "the great outdoors", where they served "the old 96'er" at the "Paul Bunyon's Cupboard"? Well, stepping into the captain's wheel felt like we'd stepped onto the 1988 set of the great outdoors. Truly the best way to describe it. We ordered the club sandwhich and the BLT, and honestly they were exactly what we wanted! This is your typical diner food and from my experience, they nailed it. It seemed like the the bar patrons were locals who were in pretty well with the staff. A bit of colorful and relaxed language coming from said bar patrons. A couple smokers on the outdoor deck, led to a bit of smoke in the dining room. Pretty lax with dogs on the deck too. We visited on the 4th of July and they were decorated to celebrate the festivities. Our waitress was friendly. I wouldn't likely go back knowing all the food options in sand point. The food is generally pretty good but I will never go back for lunch. The portions on the fish tacos are horrible at lunch time. Calling them fish tacos is giving them too much credit because you can hardly find any fish in them. Also, the place is poorly maintained and the clientele is pretty trashy - the last time I was there I got to watch a drunk guy at the bar yelling threats about how he was going to have his brother arrested or some such thing. The place is quite simply a run down filthy mess in a beautiful natural setting. Worn out furniture, complete with large holes. If you like spiders, this is your place. Active webs abound above your head should you sit next to a window. These seats also afford you a clear view if the mold and water damage of the leaking from the paint peeled ceiling. You have to be dying of thirst and/or starving to sit down in this place (we were both). Enjoy the view, as you will be looking at it for what seems an eternity before anyone waits on you, or brings you a pre-greased menu. The bar is short on quality brands, so have multiple choices in mind or resign yourself to "whatever you have"....... Once food arrived it was ok. Fish and chips were a real surprise. Hamburger.....not so much. Sides were about two bites, served in a plastic container about the same size as what your dentist gives you that splash of mouthwash in. That was ok, as it was just some packaged product you would see in the discount food markets........ Found out later there is a better choice for lunch up the street. Will be trying that as one visit here will last a lifetime. Really too bad the place is so neglected, as Bayview is such a pretty place. read more

I went here tonight with my family of 9 to celebrate buying a boat. We were warmly treated and told to sit where ever we like. Since we had children we decided to sit in the room separate from the bar area. Our server came almost immediately with coloring sheets crayons, children's menus, menus, and silverware. Started us off with drinks her name was printed on her apron and her name was Shara. She was busy serving the entire room we were in except for 2 small vacant tables. She came back with drinks took our orders recommend fish and chips (her favorite). She seemed calm and collected and remembered everything everyone in our entire party asked for. The food was phenomenal we even ordered dessert and she was excited because she got to make it. I would give the food 5 stars, the service 6 if I could and the prices were very reasonable especially for the large portions. My granddaughter even spilled her drink and within seconds our server had a towel and napkins and made her feel less embarrassed. I had to ask for a steak knife, as the butter knife wouldn't make a dent in the tough meat. Had to ask for horseradish, as it did not appear with the food. What kind of restaurant serves prime rib without a steak knife and horseradish??? Nice view of the marina, but the food and service was poor.
