Don't go to this shop. They are scammers will overcharge you for parts and fail to fix the issue you visited them for. When you need a refund from them, it needs to go through Car-X corporate, which is slow and unreliable. I took mine in for a check engine light for the knock sensor, and they only made the problem worse. I'm pasting the below paragraphs from my refund request: I'm looking for a refund on some service I had done to my car (VIN redacted). Specifically, I'd like a refund for parts and labor on the knock sensor replacement that the shop did. I visited the shop on 12/11 to request this refund, and they said they'd talk to corporate about it. After not receiving any updates, I followed up with the shop on 12/16. Now, on 12/20, I have still not received any communication regarding the services requested. I entered the shop with a check engine light with code P0325 (Knock Sensor Circuit Bank 1). They told me that after testing, they determined the knock sensor to be faulty, and they replaced it with an "OEM equivalent" knock sensor (Duralast SU6143). Shortly after I retrieved the car from the shop, the CEL came back on with the same code as before. Later, after I warmed up the car, this code persisted, and the engine developed a misfire on one cylinder. I had the car serviced at a dealer, and they replaced the Duralast sensor with a genuine Honda one. The CEL has not come back on, and the misfire did not occur again. Now, after an additional 150 miles of driving, there have been no issues with the engine. Seeing as the aftermarket knock sensor that Car-X installed 1) failed to fix the P0325 code and 2) likely caused the engine to misfire, I am requesting a full refund for the cost of both parts and labor for this repair. Also, the Duralast sensor they installed costs $74 at AutoZone and somehow $180 (not including labor) at Car-X. The shop also recommended me for new tires, while the dealer later said my tires are in generally good condition and have well over another year of average driving left on them. read more

Took my car in to them to get a flat fixed, when I showed up to collect my car I found out they replaced my battery without my approval and were charging me 270 dollars for a 40 dolllar battery!!!! When I asked why they would change my battery when I didn't ask them to, I was told I could either pay the full amount or they would take the battery back and find a way to get my car off their property. My car's transmission began to malfunction. I took it in to CarX at 2216 South Neil Street, Champaign, IL 61820 for an evaluation and was told that all that needed to be done was to replace an output shaft seal. Three days after the job was done, the transmission began to act up again. I took it to a transmission shop and was told that the entire transmission was completely broken. I'm now spending $6,000+ to replace the transmission after doing additional damage to the unit by driving it for the 3-days after repairs were made. The Asst. Manager refused to offer me any type of compensation and said that I had been told to take the car to the dealership because the shaft bushing was worn and the car wasn't operational. Had I known that, I would have paid the fee for having the problem evaluated at CarX and taken the car to a transmission shop. Compensation request: Some or all of the $779.41 I spent at CarX. There is no amount of money that will compensate me for the stress I endured knowing that I had been driving a malfunctioning car. Update from my review on 01/31/2023 I have contacted customer service three times per the request of the company. After discussing my issues with a representative, the next two times I called it conveniently went straight to voicemail. It's been over a month since the initial discussion where they encouraged me that I would be compensated for the poor service. I have all receipts and am requesting a refund on my battery which died within a year and a half of installation and was the incorrect type of battery for 223.50, my exhaust which was replaced by them and needed to be serviced again in 7 months for 455.09, and my ignition which had to be fixed by another mechanic after 9 months for 340.11. I will now be documenting every time I call and will update this review whether or not they chose to resolve this situation. read more

THIS APP NEEDS 0 STAR OPTION. 1 star is too generous. Maybe they are good at simple tasks like an oil change or flat tire, based on the other's reviews, but still, I highly doubt it. *They installed wrong wheel bearing parts on my car, which, I assume, permanently damaged my car.* This business is doing a horrific job at finding a problem, fixing it, and taking responsibility while doing a wonderful job at pissing a customer by showing no single sign of sorriness for destroying the car. My car is a honda civic, one of the most common cars in the US. Visited here first time a few months ago to replace the brake pad. They asked me to do all the general services like alignment, brake replacement, filter and oil change, etc, total cost was around $2000. After that, there was a weird squeaky sound from the front part of the car whenever I step on the accel or brake. I was annoyed of course but not mad. Visited again, and they now told me the wheel bearing is the problem! Should have told me before, but I believed them and let them replace it, an additional $800. After that, the squeaky sound from my car was more apparent, and also there was an additional badass bass trap sound from my car whenever I'm driving. As a non-car expert, I did not know how problematic that was, so I drove with it for 2 months, a major mistake. The sound got worse and worse, so I had to visit again. Then, THEY TOLD ME WRONG WHEEL BEARING PART IS INSTALLED. The badass trap bass sound from the car was from the wrong parts installed by this business. I traveled around the state with the wrong parts installed for 2 months. Can't imagine what damage might have been done. How an auto repair shop manages the business if it can not fix one of the most common cars in the US. They proudly tell me one of his guys messed it up and will replace a wheel bearing with a big smile but with a don't give a F tone. Today I picked up my car, wishing for no additional meet-up with this guy. The car still makes a squeaky sound. I won't get any service anymore here because the past data is telling me they can not fix One tiny car and may even destroy it. Really want to upload entire video logs of squeaky sounds development of my car in this review but the app is not allowing video here. Thank you for destroying my car. I purchased 4 tires at the University St location with all the bells & whistles. I have driven only 8,900 miles. There was a nail in one tire & the tires needed to be rotated. I had a 1:00 appt.& arrived at 1:00. The man at desk (CSR) said 45 minutes. I left at 2:50. In my eyes, that is significantly longer than 45 min. When the tech brought out the tire, he said he could not just pull nail out. He could, however, say he could patch it. He stated multiple times that he could not guarantee how long the patch would last. I asked how much a new tire would cost. The CSR did not believe I had purchased the tires at that location. He did not make any attempt to verify that I purchased the tires there. I pointed out that when I called for the appt., I was in your system & asked had to tell him to look at previous visit. Low & behold it clearly showed the purchase. My statement from the earlier statement shows I had paid for tire rotation & tire repair. There is also a sentence that says if tire is "unfixable" that I might be entitled to a new tire. I do see the phrase "the Company will at its option" replace tires. I found the men I spoke withe unbelievably unhelpful. They did due the rotation for free but I paid for repair. The tire was missing the valve cap cover, which I think should have been replaced. (can't fix typos). In short, I will not be using CarX as the CSRs did not know what they were doing. read more

Parents of university students, keep reading. We were in town for Moms Weekend 2022. Daughter needed a new battery and tires for her Toyota. Easy right? Not here. We picked it because it's close to campus. The men in this location are condescending and unreliable. Friendly enough on drop off but that's where the customer service ends. They called us with a 1200 quote for a battery and 4 basic Kelly tires. We stated that was too much and picked a lower quality tire that cost 900 total with battery. When we went back to pick it up, we stood there totally ignored while they ordered their pizza for lunch. We finally were acknowledged and we paid for insurance on every tire, full replacement for any reason and free rotations. As we were driving it off the lot it died at the first stop light. We figured it was a fluke and thought nothing of it. The next day it was shaking, the wheels and entire car. It had NEVER. done this before. Since it was a weekend and the business was now closed we googled possible issues and found that perhaps it needed a manual reset due to new battery and to let it idle for 30 minutes. This is common in older cars with no memory parts inside apparently. The guys told us nothing about that or that it could be an issue. Then the Monday after this weekend ended and we had left the state, the tire pressure light came on. We told our kid to go right back to the same location. The guy at this shop said one tire was at 30 at scolded her for not searching for a solution on YouTube. He also said it probably hadn't been filled when replaced on Saturday. Really? You are going to talk down to a college student for not researching how to fix the tire pressure and state your shop probably hadn't filled it right? It's Tuesday now and I expect this won't be the last of the issues. Take my advice and my experience and NEVER use this shop for repairs. Just plain awful experience. read more

I've frequented this Car-X multiple times (I don't have the best luck with cars...) and I've always had a great experience. The employees seem to-the-point but very patient and helpful if something needs extra explaining. I've had routine oil changes done, but my car has also seemingly been brought back from the dead (with no after effects) due to the great work of the staff! We had an excellent experience at this Car-X location today! We had already been traveling a couple hours to get to a funeral and we still had a few hours to go when our car broke down on the side of the highway. Luckily, we were right near the exit for Champaign. We called a few places but since it's a Saturday, most places were either closed or too busy to help us. We eventually reached Terry at Car-X, and he was so friendly and understanding of our situation. He said that he could fit us in to diagnose the issue, and that they would do their best to help us. Terry and our mechanic, Damien, were so kind and accommodating. The problem with our car ended up being more extensive than we thought, and although they were very busy, they found a way to fit us in and provide amazing customer service. We saw Terry interact with many other customers, and it's clear that customer service is a priority at this Car-X location. Both he and Damien went above and beyond to make sure we were informed about the process, and comfortable while we had to wait. I would recommend this Car-X to anyone! Robert gave me a very honest appraisal and said I didn't need those changed yet. He save me a lot of money and told me when those things would need to be done and what it would cost. DO NOT GET YOUR WHEELS ALIGNED AT THIS PLACE!! They know jack shit about alignment. Costed me an additional $800 to undo their screwup. Biggest mistake was to go to this place to get my car wheels aligned. They made it worse than it was before, so much so that the car was dangerously unstable and the rear wheels were weaving when driving above 30mph. I not only had to pay someone else to realign my car but also replace the battery coz they drained and destroyed it during alignment process. They don't even provide you with the alignment report (Making excuses that they don't have a printer at their location. Really? I pay $95 for an alignment and you don't even have a printer?). It tells you so much about the quality of service they provide and confidence in their skill sets. When I complained them about the issue, they were trying to convince me it's the suspension and wanted me to shell out $700 for a replacement. Went in to get my tires replaced, and everything seemed to be in order. The work was done quick and the people were friendly. And then my tire came off while I was driving down the interstate. The lug nuts had not been tightened properly on the front driver's side tire, so it flew off into the median and my car almost flipped. So, no, I would not recommend or come again. read more

I changed all of my tires on Jul. 13, 2017 and the back rear tire flattened on Feb. 26, 2018, due to a crack on the tire sidewall facing the vehicle. It's under the warranty mileage and I also have purchased road hazard coverage. However, when I came to Car-X for tire replacement, I was told that the sidewall is not covered by any of them (Car-X staff: we didn't say we cover sidewall damage), and they even suspected that I damaged the sidewall on my own. We had an argument back and forth, until I said I'm a materials scientist and I'm sure that the shape of the crack is definitely not caused by external damage, but the material fatigue. The staff reluctantly contacted their boss and agreed to change the tire only with labor fee. Apparently I'll never ever go to Car-X in future. read more

I started coming here after the dealer said I needed $600+ in repairs, and I called around for other estimates, and they were 40% cheaper. Of course, there are others who can do work for similar rates, but the deciding factor was that Rob, who is usually at the front desk, was apparently the only guy in town who could handle a phone call in a useful and professional way. I know thats a fairly small factor to make a decision on, but I don't regret it, since its been representative of how they've been to me since. Also, if I bring the car in for an oil change or other regular maintenance, and ask for them to check some potential problem out, and it just turns out to be something trivial that takes a few seconds to fix, they don't use that as an excuse to charge a half-hour of shop time. I wanted to get a 60,000 mile service to my truck and they wanted me to bring in my truck for a quite??? Why? I gave him all the info he needed on the phone, make, model, and options...why do I need to bring it in? What happened to customer service in our time? When you look for repair shop, it's important to keep your priorities straight. While friendly interactions are nice to have, quality work is what I expect. I had this Car-X do two maintenance services (over the course of a year+), and about a month after the second one, my car started to produce an incredibly loud high-pitched noise. When I contacted Car-X with this, the response was basically, 'parts don't last forever. take it back in.' Well, I'd hope parts last longer than a month after you supposedly checked them over... I didn't trust them enough to take it back. Here are the results from a more reputable mechanic: Long-term overheating, which caused quite a bit of internal damage, including the oil filter housing and water pump bearings. Two maintenance services, and Car-X didn't catch this. It was a systematic failure, not just a single part breaking, and it definitely would have been less costly to fix if found earlier. Icing on the cake? The synthetic oil that Car-X suggested I upgrade to (which I did) left enough gunk that I had to pay for another oil & filter change, a little more than a month after Car-X's service. read more

I had a problem with the muffler and i took my car first in the morning. The mechanics were not there yet so i needed to leave my car. They called me 3hrs later telling me i need to change my converter in order to fix my muffler and gave me an estimate of 2k. I went to CarX to get a buyer's inspection on a used vehicle I was interested in. Their report said that the car was fine on every aspect, so I bought their words and took the car. Guess what, the rear right door latch was broken and won't lock or scroll window, it's a $500 job with parts and labor. I was just amazed at the fact that a professional team of car mechanics missed a broken door. Maybe I misread the items they check in buyer's inspection so they don't actually check on-board electronic system, or they don't check all the mechanical part on the car. If that's the case then why would I want to have you inspect a car before I buy it than just hire a private car machanic then order him to check every dang thing on the car? It's costs me about the same anyway. read more
