The food in this little Middle Eastern restaurant deserves frequent return visits. It is a generic mix of lamb, beef, and chicken as prepared in Syria, Iraq, and other Arabic ports-of-call. Interesting since the owners are Libyan. The pastry, which we didn't try, looks even better than the proteins and veggies we did. The biggest negative is the seating. How do you say horribly uncomfortable in Arabic? Also, in Tucson I would expect some homebrewed ice tea not bottled. Still, Caravan, like its grocery next door make life in the Old Pueblo even better. read more

This is the best Mediterranean food in Tucson. The salads are crisp and fresh with a perfect olive oil dressing. The falafels are crispy and light. I love the chicken--flavorful and only white meat. The rice is so good--I think it has a touch of cinnamon. The cooked vegetable medley is so flavorful. Portions are large. Husband loves the tabouli, lentil soup, Mediterranean salad, and hummus. The baklava is one of the best we've had. It seems most people order take out, they have a drive up window, but we always eat inside. The owner and staff are very friendly. This has become one of our favorite restaurants because it's so good and healthy. Highly recommend. read more

I wish I could give this place a higher rating or 3.5 stars. Caravan Grill, formerly Zatar, has definitely made changes and updates from the previous establishment. From what I've heard and read, this place is a branch off of the small market next door. Pros: Compared to the previous establishment, Caravan Grill has some really nice changes and updates. There is definitely a lot more seating compared to the previous layout. The changes in the set-up and paint make the space feel a lot brighter and spacious. They've made updates to their register and seem to be selling a lot more fresh baked goods compared to before. Additionally, they have a lot of options in terms of menu choices. I ordered a gyro and following that, I was asked a lot of questions. "Would you like anything else on it besides the Tzatziki sauce and meat?"/ "Would you like thin, medium or thick bread?"/ What would you like to drink with your combo? It's nice that they have a different option for bread, which allows you to taste different styles of breads and cuisine. I opted for the medium thickness, which the man told me was Iraqi-style bread. For my extra toppings, I added onions, tomatoes, pickles, and lettuce. It's nice that there is no extra charge for the extra toppings! For the drink option, they no longer have the soda machine. Instead, there is a huge selection of bottled and canned drinks, from sodas to unique Asian drinks. Cons: Although there seem to be a lot of selections, I wonder if that makes it a little more challenging to keep everything of great quality. I liked the medium thickness bread, but I had some issues with my gyro. There was too much Tzatziki sauce, making my gyro very soggy. There was a lot of meat in my gyro, but it wasn't very hot like I'm used to getting. There large selection of drink options is enticing, but it was really hard to see and read all the options, plus that means no refills like before. The fries that came with the combo were a little cold and I wish there was a little bit of seasoning like they used to have under the previous establishment. This place doesn't look like much from the outside but it is some of the best food in Tucson. Not just Mediterranean...all food. The hummus and baba ghanoush are just ridiculous. There are a few food displays with another savory (meat pies etc) and sweet (baklava etc) goodies that you can get. All of it looked so tasty, I had to exert massive self control to not buy all of it. I ordered the lamb shawarma plate and an Arabic coffee. The lamb plate came with lamb pieces atop a bed of aromatic rice, a small salad, hummus, and pita. Every part of the dish was so flavorful and the lamb and rice were full of spices! I really enjoyed all of the food I ordered, especially the sampler plate. I thought the baba ganoush was especially tasty. I am a vegetarian so I didn't have any gyros. My parents did, and although they said it wasn't what they had typically had as a gyro, that it was still very tasty. Stopped in on a whim due to having a coupon...and boy are we glad we did! I had the beef schwarma and hummus with a cardamom fragrant tea, while my wife had the chicken schwarma with a mint tea. The plates are presented with the most delectable rice and mixed vegetables, and a small green salad with a tangy mint-garlic dressing on the side. Bottom line: Seriously tasty gyro in a warm flatbread unlike any pita I've had anywhere. Inexpensive and quite good. Simple, but bright and airy dining room. Counter service only. Recommended. Opens late on Fridays. We went for lunch on a weekday. Constant stream of customers, mostly take-out. Popular place! Dining room is very small, but exceptionally clean and neat. The restaurant is located next to Caravan Middle Eastern foods. If you're thinking that there used to be another middle eastern food place here, you're right. This is the former location of Za'atar (which remains open further south). Not a date night location, unless it's a quick and inexpensive bite before a movie or show. If you like middle eastern food, this shop ought to be on your list of places to try. read more

My trip to Caravan Grill began simply enough, the usual "where should we eat?" quandary as my mom and I tried to think up new lunch spots to explore. We opened Yelp, the bf suggested Mediterranean, so we punched it in and began the typical scroll. Soon enough we had decided upon Caravan (great reviews, good looking pics), and were off! The restaurant building is right next to their imports store, features some decoratively outlined windows, and is pretty quaint. My mom and I walked in and scanned for an empty table, quickly swooping up the one right next to us and claiming our seats as the place was packed! (To me it says a lot when a place is busy on a weekday for lunch.) The menu is one sided, succinct, and you place your order and pay at the counter. Prices are more than fair, and we were surprised with the amount of food we were able to get for the price. The people working here were super kind, welcoming, and helpful. We ordered food to both dine in and to-go, and without having to mention it, they staggered our take out order about half way through our meal so it wasn't sitting the entire time we were eating, which was phenomenal. My mom and I both got the gyro plates, and had absolutely zeros complaints about the entire meal. The meat was cooked to perfection, and having had several other local gyro plates, I can easily say this is the best one I've had yet! The hummus was smooth and flavorful, and the warm veggies also accompanying the meal were to die for. (I would have eaten an entire plate of those alone, to be honest.) They also kept the fresh pita coming, which was great because who doesn't always want more pita? Show me someone who stops at one basket of pita, I'll wait. During our meal, people kept rolling in, even choosing to sit outside when the indoor seats filled up, and that is truly all you need to know about the quality of the place. When people choose to sit outside in Arizona *in the summer* you know it's good. My mom and I both can't wait to return, and I can't wait to bring all my other people! Not to be confused with the previous occupant If this building that moved down the road-the food here is more levant styled and has a fabulous Syrian flair. The staff is extremely friendly and go the extra miles for their customers. It's set in a former El Taco restaurant location, but it has been cleaned up beautifully! All the reviews I have read are SO FAKE!! My beef plate had barely any beef and was completely dry. Freshly made bread? Yeah right. Every chair and table in the place wobbles, making it impossible to sit down comfortably, and the toilet had diarrhea stains on the seat. Won't ever be back!! read more

I was surprised to see that the family that owns Caravan market opened up their own restaurant. I am glad they did. The previous establishment, although good, was never consistent in regards to their food and service was atrocious. I decided to start things off with a simple falafel wrap and side of fries. The falafel was excellent. Flavor was on point. A few items that I am sure they will fix and I hope they do; the veggie mix, most notably the cucumber inside the wrap contained some large chunks. The fries were neither soggy or crispy. A few extra seconds would have made a difference. I also got a little baklava surprise in my bag. Homemade, soft, perfect level of sweetness. The fries that came along w/it were admittedly a lil cold, and they had mixed up the bread order, but the bread that was given to me was still good. :) What really makes this place great is the friendly and attentive service--the guy who was the cashier was really nice and very welcoming, which is something one wishes was present in all restaurants!
