Today I tried Carbajals Restaurant. It's a small family owned bar/restaurant in a shopping center off Main Street in Mesa. The server was warm and welcoming. I had the #5 Taco and enchilada combo. The food was a step below mediocre. I ordered sonora chicken enchiladas with egg. With a margarita, it came to $40. Easily the most expensive mexican food I've ever had. It was one corn tortilla, a pinch of chicken, watery refried beans, enchilada sauce, a lot of cheese melted on top, a lot of rice, and some iceberg lettuce with tomato. It was like east coast mexican food. Definitely lower quality food than filibertos or taco bell. It was basically just refried beans, rice, and cheese for $40. The place was packed and I cannot see why. Arizona has piles of great mexican restaurants. This is not one of them. read more

Went for dinner last Friday. Got two dinners & 4 beers and it was $75. I even told the waitress she gave us the wrong bill. Our dinners included an enchilada but because we got "beef", it was $3 extra each dinner. Don't remember that being on the menu. Also, $7 for a bottled beer is steep. Looks better in the reviews than in person. There was a terrible sewer smell throughout the building and they had a floor fan running, so I'm guessing a toilet backed up and flooded the place, but I was hoping the food was going to make up for it. The shredded beef taco I ordered was terrible. The tortilla was rock hard and the beef was like shredded wood mulch. The carne asada for the carne asada taco was dry. The red burrito was good. Decent cheese enchilada. The chile rellenos were a hit. My red tamal was ok. I just wouldn't recommend the place. read more

This place has been in the same location for quite some time. Things have changed and entrées have come and gone, but overall it's still pretty good. The prices of got a little bit steep, but who's haven't ? They're pretty easy-going people and very friendly. It's a small location and is usually very clean. It's about time I wrote a review since this has become our go to place for taco Tuesday. Hard to beat a good old ground beef crispy taco! But the chili rellenos are the best we've had and we are long time researchers for the best one. Not heavily breaded, just a simple chili with cheese and a delectable sauce. Also her Margarita is NOT a pre made mix. another Star! not a fancy spot but those are the best Mexican foods! by the way, she's 30 years in business. read more

Okay so we stopped at this place because we were around the area, hungry, and craving Mexican food. I should note both my husband and I are Mexican and therefore we struggle with finding decent restaurants that actually have a Mexican feel and taste. Unfortunately, this location wasn't what we expected. It wasn't horrible either, but we wouldn't return. The place itself looks and sounds Mexican from the outside. The inside has a bar and a variety of booths. We sat down and were greeted nicely. The waitress took our order and brought us some chips and salsa. They later on asked if we wanted more chips (which they charged us for, but didn't tell us). We were given opened straws for our waters which is highly unhygienic. The guacamole wasn't worth the price and was bland! We ended up fixing it ourselves so it was edible. Maybe it was our fault for expecting more authentic Mexican food, but this wasn't it for us. It's a decent option for sure for those who may want Mexican but a little more authenticity than Chipotle. read more

Authentic!!! Reminds me of my favorites in El Paso. Service is amazing. It is my go to meal as soon as I get into Mesa.

My wife and I are from NM and are kinda Mexican food snobs. We searched for something close to home and found Carbajal's. It's tucked away in a strip mall/shopping center that has mostly closed. We walked in and were immediately greeted by Shakira. She was the only server working at the time and was killing it. Genuinely one of the sweetest young ladies you'll ever meet. She is the niece of the owner, Marina and family. Marina came and greeted us as well. She is the Tia everyone wants. Now the food. I judge Mexican food restaurants by their rellenos. Around my neighborhood had been mostly eggy; almost like a dang omelet wrapping a chile. Nope; I was back in NM when is saw and ate their rellenos. Whether Shakira, Marina, or the rest of the family likes it; they are stuck with us as customers. Thank you and your family for such a wonderful experience. Had our first visit last night and it was so good! A friend recommended and she was so right. All five of us loved our dinner. Chicken tacos and the chicken enchiladas were a favorite! I had a ground beef chimichanga and it has some kick and an excellent taste. My husband ate my leftovers today and said it was so good that he would order the ground beef the next time. All loved the beans. We brought our 20 month old grandson with us and they were so friendly with him. Loved the staff! We will definitely be back! read more

I really wanted to like this place. We drove a long way to get there. There was no one else in the restaurant, but it was 3pm , so between lunch and dinner. The salsa was very good but the chips had that day old grease taste. The service was good the waitress was super. Kind and friendly and helpful. The place was clean and comfortable. My husband had the a la cart cheese enchiladas and he liked them. Red sauce was good. It was taco Tuesday so I went with the fish tacos. I should have gone with my first choice., this review may have been better. The corn taco shells were simply dipped in grease to heat them up and not clean grease. They should have heated them on the grill. They just looked like they were dipped in dirty grease. The tilapia, although huge pieces which is fish taco dream were cooked to death. Hard and way over cooked. Their chance to make a splash was gone. No sauce on the tacos, no creamy sauce, just pico de gallo. No cabbage or even lettuce which should really be shredded cabbage. The worse part was the margaritas. 10$ a piece for cheap tequila and cheap sweet and sour mix. The entire meal was $50.00 seriously expensive for seriously bad food and drinks. This is an update post--- I'm sorry but my coworker and I have order a lot here and each time it seems to be getting worse. You can look at the difference in the color of the first soup I posted to the new one. It's so so so so so so so greasy!! Just a thick flim of grease! Last time we order a burrito and lord it wasn't good at all. The sour cream looks weird and it was all just pilled at the end. We always ask for lime, spoons and napkins and there is a 3% chance that we will actually get it even tho we ask for it! Im upset because we do spend a lot of money here especially on the soup but it's just keeps getting worse. read more

Small mom and pop style Mexican restaurant. Very clean and quaint. I had a chicken enchilada and 3 shredded beef tacos. Tortillas were individually fried 'old school' and all ingredients were fresh and served at proper temperature. Restaurant is decorated appropriately and music was fitting to the theme. I grew up eating home cooked Mexican style food and have eaten it all over the US. Surprisingly, this little place makes some of most authentic home cooked Mexican style food I've ever had. On Presidents Day we were contemplating on what to have for a late dinner so we were going through the Mexican food restaurant section on YELP and we came across Carbajal's located in a strip mall on Main St. here in Mesa. Now the inside is smaller but it can accommodate groups very well and it does have an eat at bar fully stocked and ready for people to order their favorite cocktail or beer to wash down all that yummy goodness that's on their menu. I ordered the cheese enchilada and chili relleno combo and I have to say hats off to whoever was in the kitchen cooking with love this is the first restaurant to perfect the chili relleno it was nice and spicy in flavor with the happy balance of breading and cheese and my cheese enchilada with red sauce was really good as well. My boyfriend ordered a bowl of chicken tortilla soup and to this day two days later is still eating came in a huge portion nice tender bite size pieces of chicken, tortilla strips in a flavorful broth and topped off with sour cream. He also ordered the Carbajal burrito it was super big but to my surprise he ate the entire burrito in one sitting he really enjoyed it a lot there was a lot of tender meat in it. The customer service is very good our server on Monday was pleasant to talk to. Carbajal's does have Taco Tuesday for those of you that enjoy great tacos. I wasn't really sure how I was going to like this place since all the other Mexican restaurants in Mesa are terrible but I give this place 5 stars for the fantastic food and service I highly recommend coming in. read more

Red chili bowl- shrimp Cocktail - bean dip with the chili - so dang good! My family and I have been coming for years!! Someone posted a Google review that they had the best Albondigas soup. My Mom who loves this soup whole heartedly agrees. Huge bowl is what they called a small bowl. Mom said it was very fresh tasting and very,very delicious. My Carne Asada salad was also excellent with very flavorful meat and with some of their wonderful fresh salsa they serve with your pre-meal chips on top it couldn't be any better. Nice crisp cool lettuce and tomato is the base for this tasty salad. Cozy little place with a wonderful server Dolly she will get you taken care of. read more

I went here on a Friday night because it was close to my friend's house. It actually wasn't very busy and the longer I was there the more I realized why. Considering there were only a handful of other people there, I think 40 minutes was an excessive wait for our food for a group of 5. And honestly the food was pretty bland for Mexican food. I had a chimichanga with green sauce and it was not horrible, but also not great. Service was friendly but slow. The owner/manager spent a lot of time chatting with the people behind us and giving them free shots and never said a word to us. Not going back ever. read more
