I have been to the original Carlo's Bakery and this franchise extension is nothing like the original. We bought a cannoli cake which I am guessing was sitting in the bakery for a few days. It was completely dry and the cannoli on top was soft from having the cream in it for too long. We also bought one of the combo packages with a couple of cannolis, an Italian horn and some cookies. It all tasted mass produced and wasn't worth the high price they charge just to shop at "Carlo's Bakery." We wasted about $75 on some horrible, dried out, mass produced bakery items. The bakery at H-E-B is about 100X better for a fraction of the price. read more

The dessert was off the charts. I had the American Napoleon and my wife had the cheesecake. Mine was by far better. They had a wide array and selection. The American Napoleon was layers of a crunchy cake between layers of frosting and cream. They don't move very quick and not a sense of urgency. The desserts are wrapped up with care but I would have preferred jumping into the sweetness. No need to tape up the box. read more

I ordered and paid online for a cake for my mother's birthday 2 days before pickup. When we show up, they didn't have my order, and they couldn't find it. Thank God I had a confirmation text and email because I almost had to walk out of there with no cake at all. So instead of a freshly made cake, we ended up leaving with a pre-made red velvet from the display counter. Later that day, after we cut into the cake, we found that it tasted weird, and the cake itself was dry. No one wanted to eat it after doing a 2nd bite, and no one wanted to take it home. My mother, who is a huge fan of cake boss, was very disappointed. She said the cakes at HEB and Walmart taste better than what I got her from Carlo's Bakery. So from pick up to eating, it was a horrible experience. She was with me the whole time, and it was our first time going into Carlo's Bakery. I'm still in shock on how bad it all went down. I've never had an experience like this with the local bakeries I normally order from. So thanks for ruining my mother's 64th birthday Carlo's. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like to get the quality I paid for. Just shows reputation isn't everything. read more

Cute little bakery shop in the Shops at La Cantera. This is Buddy Valastro's bakery. He's also known as the Cake Boss on TLC. It's a small bakery with LOTS of options-- cakes, cake slices, cupcakes, cookies, and cannoli's. Once you walk through the door, there are ropes to help guide you through the ordering line. The first person will take your order and as you maneuver further down the line, they'll get it all packed up and ready to go by the time you reach the check out desk. I got myself a strawberry shortcake cupcake, cannoli, and sprinkle sugar cookie. All of it was great. I found it to be reasonably priced-- my order was under $10 (yes for three items but it's the Cake Boss' shop! Of course I'm going to spend the money!) There is NO sitting room in the bakery. It's an order and go type of place but their packaging is great. My cupcake was placed in a cupcake shaped plastic container so that the frosting was never smushed. I appreciated that. read more

Ever since Carlo's Bakery opened up, my family and I have bought our special occasion cakes here. We loved watching their show on TV and have always wanted to try their wonderful goodies. We have tried the fudge ganache, cookies and cream, and chocolate mousse cakes. All were very good. My favorite was the fudge ganache. There are many other cakes that I want to try but we always end up buying them last minute so our options are limited. We have also tried the lobster claw, cannoli, cheesecake. The lobster claw was eh, ok. The cannoli is pretty good, and cheesecake was alright. I think the best item to buy are the cakes. I really want to try the rainbow cakes, they look so beautiful!!! If you haven't tried this bakery, you should. The employees are very helpful and nice. If the desserts don't put a smile on your face, the employee definitely will. Very new store. Lots of options in the form of bakery items. The cakes are 4 levels and they have at least 5 different types of cake (red velvet, carrot, etc..). I had the cupcakes. Not bad. I noticed that you can order online and pick up in store. They, also, have a coffee bar with many options. Looked to be a reputable place with proper ambiance so stopped in to check this place out. Some fresh bakery was on display and some packaged (that's strange). Baked when??? Ordered a cannoli. While I'm not an expert on them, I didnt think it was amazing. I think the biggest turn off was the customer service. The gal working the counter was a bit curt in her responses. There were quite a few employees, and most just seemed to be standing around. The problem there is it is costly to have inefficiency. That cost gets passed on to the customer. I also am turned off by being asked for gratuity in this type of food industry. No gratuity should be expected if you didn't seat me, didnt bring me water, didnt check in on me and certainly not clean up after me. Overall just a fancy cover with very little writing on the inside. H‑E‑B has better cake for half the price. read more

My best friend and I wanted to avoid the lines and visited on a Monday morning as soon as they opened. There was no line but my friend was very disappointed that they did not have the unicorn cake available and cashier was unable to tell her when they would have it. She got the confetti cake and I got the classic cannoli, chocolate cannoli and lobster tail. The confetti cake was good. The cannolis had a nice crunch and very sweet filling. My absolute favorite was the lobster tail! The tail had the flaky crispy crust and the filling was sweet decadence. This is one place where you wish you had not only the money, but the stomach room to buy everything in the display case. The Dessert items in there were amazing! Almost went into diabetic coma just looking at the items in the case! The peanut butter and regular flavored cannolis that we got were of good quality and taste. The peanut butter was a little bit on the light side though. All the cakes that you see there are made on site with scratch ingredients. Every item in there is made according to Buddy's recipes. The rainbow cake would drive you crazy trying to figure out what flavor is in each color. This cake was made in honor of his father, who loved rainbows, for they were signs of God's promise. The young ladies that were providing us service were very friendly, and patient with us, as we were trying to figure out what item to finally settle upon. They were gracious and helpful. And to all veterans out there, they offer a little discount which and today's world any little bit helps. After introduced to Carlo's Bakery in Dallas, I was beyond excited to learn of an additional location opening up in the area. Even at 7pm, there was still a semi-line within the quaint store. Since the store is mainly taken up by counters and mouth-watering pastries behind glass panes, it makes sense that people would crowd a bit in what is left of floor space. However, my only qualm with this particular location is that they herd people into the center of the floor with dividers before they call your order. Seems a bit inefficient, and I'm not a fan. New customers kept shoving me closer to the door on accident, and the system was a little confusing. Otherwise, gold bakery standard at Carlo's, as always. I personally recommend anything they do with strawberries and cream. Honestly, they could decorate a shoe in their special concoction of strawberries and cream, and most of us would devour it, none the wiser...because Carlo's Bakery is just that good. It was a little bit of a wait, probably about 20 minutes at 12:00p.m. on a Thursday. It's a small space, so it does get overcrowded rather quickly. They were pretty quick with taking your order. The longest part was waiting for them to bag the order so you can check out. I was disappointed that they did not have everything they showed on the menu in store--I was looking forward to getting a Napoleon which was on the menu but they said they didn't have any and wouldn't have any the rest of the day. The food is a little overpriced, but you're paying more for the Carlo's Bake Shop brand. I wouldn't say it's anything special. I've had better pastries and donuts at other bakeries. Stopped by today, fully expecting there to still be a line since other locations tend to have lines, even this far after opening. No line. No customers there at all. Granted it's a weekday & during the work/school day. I ordered 2 vanilla cupcakes & 2 lobster tails. The cupcakes were decent. Not anything to write home about, honestly, and they wouldn't necessarily have je wanting to buy a specialty cake. There are plenty of other bakeries in SA with much better cupcakes. The lobster tails tasted okay, but they were sooooo stale. My husband and I both agree had they been freshly made, they would've been better. But these were downright chewy. I would've guessed they've been in the case for at least 2 days. At least. And if not, the shell must have been made a while ago. It's definitely not fresh. It's disappointing to say the least. I've been to 2 other locations - the original in Hoboken and one in Dallas, and they were much better. Not sure what's going down with the SA location, but they need to get it together or they'll go the way of Buddy V's. read more

My sister and I were there bright and early for Carlos Bakery's grand opening at La Cantera. We are big fans of Cake Boss and both had high expectations for the desserts. Sadly, I was disappointed. We got the tray with a variety of desserts, 4 cupcakes and a brownie. The brownie just had too much frosting, it took away the flavor of the actual brownie. The cupcakes were sadly dry. Nothing special about them. However, I did enjoy the cannolis a lot. My favorite of the dessert tray. The ricotta cheese filling was creamy and delicious. I found this shop by accident, but was so excited to try as I have watched the Cake Boss show. I ordered a slice of the birthday cake and immediately found a spot to sit and dig in. There was no one in line (granted it was 11:30 on a summer Tuesday) but that didn't mean we wouldn't have to wait. After 3-5 minutes of not being greeted and considering walking out (which is a long time when you're looking at workers and not acknowledged) we were told sorry, and asked what we would like. I have to start this review by making this disclaimer: I had not one crumb of cake! So Cake Boss or not, I had to skip the cake. Don't get me wrong, cake is my absolute favorite dessert. But more often than not, cake from a bakery is a total miss. I don't care how much gorgeous fondant is wrapped around it--bakery cakes are normally bland, dry, hard, flavorless--in a word, disheartening. I just won't put my heart, my tastebuds, my stomach, and my wallet through that sort of disappointment. So no--not one crumb of cake for me! On to the review! We practically ordered the entire case of pastries because this is what happens when you have no self-control and BREAD. I love flaky dough, I love hazelnut, I love powdered sugar and pecans, I love things dipped in a dark and mysterious chocolate goo, and goodness gracious, I love cream-filled things. How can I go wrong with wedding cookies, hazelnut puffs, a chocolate-dipped pecan wedge, eclair, hazelnut lobster tail, and an assortment of other things that escape me? Excuse me while I drool all over again. The staff was so polite--pointing at things they themselves enjoy and throwing recommendations left and right. Again, we were taking quite the chance because, as is customary for me, I only seem to visit bakeries right as they're closing--TOTALLY RECKLESS, I know. But, everything was so pretty and overpriced that I had to risk it. ;) We traveled home with these expensive treats and I went into the whole thing with eyes wide open. There was a chance everything would be a sad, end-of-day, dry, heap of mess. But luck would have it that "dry heap of mess" wasn't going to be on the menu. What a stinking delight everything has been so far! I am taking my time going through all the things we bought because I don't want to die from a diabetic coma. So far, I HIGHLY recommend the chocolate-dipped pecan wedge because my eyes haven't rolled that hard to the back of my head from sheer delight in the 37 years I've been on this planet. The wedding cookies are also the best I've ever had! So final word? You should definitely give this place a try, but for goodness sake, skip the cake and get the stuff you can't get everywhere else. Oh my goodness this place has the most delicate, rich, ooey gooey, moist, and heavenly desserts! I could eat here everyday if calories didn't matter. The smell of this place when you walk in drowns you as soon as you open the door. It's an amazing scent. So warm, friendly and inviting. I was an instant fan. I ordered the salted caramel cupcake. The cake was moist and the icing was rich. In the middle was a sweet surprise of caramel filling! I enjoyed every bite. I was only going to eat half and save the rest for the next day. That didn't happen. I ate all of it in one sitting. So. Amazing. The bakery is small but it has the intimate feel going on. The staff are friendly and helpful. I was a little overwhelmed and didn't know what to choose. I kept letting people go in front of me while I stared at all of the goodies through the glass. I do believe I made the best choice.
