It honestly felt like being around family and friends, which is something so rare nowadays. The decor was so fun too! The Baked Bird has personality from the moment you walk in. The bright, open dining room, colorful murals, yellow chairs and waffle-shaped coffee mugs all fit a playful breakfast concept that feels intentional rather than gimmicky. The coffee was smooth, and the staff worked well as a team. They were attentive and knowledgeable about both the menu and the restaurant's history. We learned that the restaurant is run by a chef duo and that their baker starts around 4 a.m. preparing the day's baked goods. We ordered the Yolkster and the Dirty South. The Yolkster showed solid technique. The hollandaise was glossy, properly emulsified and balanced between richness and acidity. The over-easy egg released a perfectly fluid yolk, while the scratch-made English muffin was nicely browned and crisp outside with a tender interior. The bacon was a little overdone for me, but the chicken sausage was a pleasant surprise with a nice balance of acid and salt. The Dirty South looks heavy when it arrives, but the dish comes together surprisingly well. The sausage gravy was one of the better versions I've had in a while. Good consistency, proper color, plenty of sausage and none of the raw or scorched flour taste that can ruin a gravy. The biscuit was dense but fully cooked with visible layers. The potatoes could have used more exterior crispness. The pico brought a welcome freshness and acidity that cut through the richness of the gravy, biscuit, egg and cheese. A little more would have helped maintain that balance throughout the dish. What impressed me most was the technique behind all that personality. Scratch-made breads, properly cooked eggs, a well-made hollandaise and carefully prepared sausage gravy show a kitchen paying attention to the fundamentals. I left curious about the rest of the menu. I joined the Braun Station retirees for their July lunch at the Baked Bird today. My wife had been there before, but it was a new experience for me. I only have one negative to mention. They don't have any hash on the menu even though the huge sign outside says, "Hash House & Coffee". They more than make up for that with all their other wonderful offerings. I chose the Steven Seagull for my meal. It's on an open face scratch made English muffin with lemon chive cream cheese, smoked salmon, hard boiled egg, fried capers and pico. They didn't have hard boiled eggs today, so they substituted my choice of eggs. I chose easy over. For my side, I chose the lime avocado. It was actually a huge scoop of guacamole- larger than most Mexican restaurants ever give. It was all totally awesome. I had a Pontoon Alley lemonade (guava, peach and raspberry). I had already had my coffee quota for the day. It was tangy, sweet, and refreshing. The venue itself was a surprise! It is spacious and bright. I don't think anyone could be in a bad mood here with such good food and the cheerful ambiance. read more

Which is how I like em. I doubted they got the salt right cause most places don't. These were perfect. Some of the best grits I've had and I grew up on them. No need to add anything. We were on vacation in San Antonio and wanted some breakfast for takeout. The place was packed so we already knew he had picked a winner. There was plenty of room on the patio, but it was a bright and sunny day in San Antonio, so you know everyone was inside. The food was amazing, I haven't had a homemade southern style breakfast like this in many a year. Everyone loves their food. My burrito was outstanding, great flavors and of course I had to make it dirty with some outstanding gravy. Biscuits were flaky and moist, everything had a great hardiness to it that assured you wouldn't be going hungry. My picky kids loved the sausage. This is definitely a treat kind of restaurant. It is very good. I like it. Their menu is simple, but big enough to have an option for everyone in your group. You order at the counter and then your food is brought up to you. I had the yolkster with salmon. You do get the option for your protein. It came with the best potatoes ever. I don't know what seasoning they used, but they were delicious. I originally was going use ketchup, but it didn't need it at all. The yolkster is an eggs Benedict. The portion size was big. I will say that the combination of the salmon and all the other ingredients made it a tad bit salty for me, but I still ate it. It was still delicious. For my drink I had a chai latte. It wasn't overly sweet. They do have a water station where you can also find to go boxes which makes it easier to take your food to go. The Baked Bird (TBB) is, hands down, the best breakfast/brunch spot (and arguably one of the best restaurants in San Antonio). You can find it on a busy corner where Babcock and Huebner intersect. The person who designed the parking lot was probably smoking a spliff when they did so because it's just wonky, but that has nothing to do with TBB. Each time we go, Ryan (the manager), Jen (the owner), and their entire staff provide the most intentional, welcoming, and top-notch service. Their space has expanded- I'm sure as a direct response to how popular they are- so there's more seating and assigned tables to make life for the customers and staff easier. We took our adult twins to TBB to celebrate their birthday, and we've decided it will be our family's breakfast celebration spot for the foreseeable future. They have an on-site bakeshop (which you can peer into while you eat at a countertop by the window), churning out scratch-made scones, sweet rolls, and pop-tarts. Our daughter loved and adored their piña colada scone a while back, so she tried out the Earl Grey scone on this visit. The baker is a genius because they topped the tea-flavored scone with what I detected was a honey cream cheese frosting. The genius is creating a pastry that literally tasted like a cuppa Earl Grey tea. Our son and my husband opted for a cinnamon roll. The only thing that would've improved them was a little heat, as they were slightly colder than room temp. TBB has quippy names for each of its menu items, which make ordering a blast. We decided on: -The Dirty South: this dish is everything you'd want in a breakfast plate. The sausage gravy is velvety and full of flavor, and the potatoes are crispy on the outside with a fluffy interior. The biscuit and eggs (I chose scrambled) were fluffy and flavorful as well. -Notorious P.I.G.: my son kept raving about how this sandwich was done right: "Why don't people appreciate bacon AND sausage on a breakfast sammie?!?!" Spoken like a true 21-year-old with good cholesterol. -Pablo Eggscobar: The caramelized onion and chipotle aioli took our daughter's baconeggandcheesesangwich over the top. -Pancake Tray: This is what you want to order if you're a safe-bet maker. You get the best of breakfast ESPECIALLY because their pancakes are the best in the city, IDK, I said what I said! We each ordered a Sancha Horchata (I'm willing to get the shakes to have this injected into my veins), Purple Haze, Token Irishman, and a Train Wreck. Note, the El Chile Pollo would've tasted so great with a chicken filet vs ground chicken patty. The Train Wreck coffee was also a standout and definitely worth trying. The free spirited owner Matt, has taken his successful food truck business and expanded it to a brick and mortar restaurant located near the well traveled intersection of Babcock and Huebner. You order at the counter first, and then choose your table. Since the food is freshly prepared, I recommend choosing a baked good like the blueberry sconce to enjoy while waiting on your meal. I went with the Peach French Toast and eggs and wifey did the same less the fruit toppings. The Peach was fresh and tasty, but those crumbles mixed in were as good as a breakfast topping as I've ever had. The texture of the crumble was crunchy and had enough sugar to activate my taste buds to want more. I could easily take a bag of these home and snack on them all day. My husband and I were looking for a good place to grab breakfast Saturday morning after plant shopping and the Baked Bird came up with really great reviews. We were one of the first people there as they were opening, and the minute we walked in we were greeted as if we were family! Really great service. The decor is hilarious, I love all the color everywhere, definitely cheery. I ordered a fresh brewed coffee which was excellent and comes with unlimited refills. My husband ordered one of the seasonal pumpkin coffee latte's and though the flavor was very good, it was brutally sweet. While we waited for our food, we got a coffee cake to snack on with our coffee and it was great because it wasn't super sweet to it balanced out. My husband ordered the BABY GREEN which is a smashed avocado toast with lime and jalapeno on cheddar sour dough with 2 eggs and cotija cheese. It was excellent! And they are very generous with the smashed avocado, he had to put some on my plate! (Not complaining.) For me, I got the Steven Seagull which is an open face sandwich in scratch made English Muffin (amazing) with lemon chive cream cheese (they need to sell this stuff!) smoked salmon, and hard boiled egg slices. Fun names and flavors. I got the Bruce Banner, the amount of coconut was just right, not over powering. I wanted a sweet and had one of their pop tarts - delicious. I want those everyday lol. We got the Birds Nest and the Amy Swinehouse. For me, the portion size is two meals for me! I could do with less potatoes on the birds nest, but it might be perfect for someone else. I've been a fan of this place since they had a food truck parked at reunion place (IYKYK), this however was my first time at their new brick and mortar. I ordered a Vanilla ice coffee to start. Which was pretty solid and not overly sweet. I Followed that by going with the Dirty south, which is pretty much a layer of potatoes, a biscuit with gravy, over easy egg with cheese and pico. As you can see by the photos it is a GRACIOUS size for little Ol' me. Everything pretty much made sense when it came to this combination lol From the crispy potatoes that were seasoned well, to the fluffy biscuit paired with the gravy!!! The gravy might just be the star of the show in my opinion. It had bits of breakfast sausage in it that was a nice touch. You can definitely tell it's scratch made. My food was on the less warm side, which would be my only take from today, but it's nothing that would prevent me from coming in again. Because it was breakfast and we all have sweet tooth, we ordered coffee with a coffee cake and cinnamon buns. They were a good size, very moist and delicious. The service was outstanding. Friendly, welcoming and helpful. We also met the owner, who was very nice. What blew us away were the food orders that we saw going to other patrons. Portion sizes were impressive. Food covered the whole plate. It was fascinating to watch. We actually regretted not ordering meals, and made a plan to return. Prices were not on the higher side, but matched those portions.
