I love habys! This bakery is so yummy. It's got the most absolutely beautiful building on the outside in old style. The pastries are also so delicious and beautiful looking. Not to mention this bakery is extremely affordable and if I lived closer I would be here all the time! So good. Only thing is service can be a little short sometimes. Chocolate Chip, sugar cookies, white chocolate macadamia (I guess it was white chocolate pecan in retrospect) all had pecans. The cookies were all pretty good but on the harder side. We also got a few pastries. I got a cream cheese Danish, it was tasty but the bread was a little stale. I expect a bakery to sell more fresh items. They also had pies and bread for sale, but I didn't partake in those items. The bakery decent but I wouldn't make a special trip for it. We were there on October 10, 2025 and they had an entire display case filled with cookies decorated in various Halloween themes. Very creative! My wife and I stopped in to pick up a pie and some pastries on our way to visit our friends who had recently moved to San Antonio. The bakery is very quiet inside. Everything was beautifully presented in their display cases and the staff were very friendly and eager to fulfill our order or answer questions. We've been going to Haby's for about 20 years. We moved away from the area and recently went back for the first time in 10 years -- happy to see the place was unchanged. I come to Haby's Bakery every day and usually have a pleasant experience, but my interaction with Jennifer today was extremely disappointing. While placing my order, she cut me off mid-sentence and asked "is that all?" before I was even finished. I still had two drinks and two more donuts to add, which is my regular order. This isn't the first time she has cut me off, but today I finally spoke up and politely asked her not to do that. Instead of correcting her behavior, she told me not to be rude--which was completely unnecessary and unprofessional. When I then asked for someone else to help me, she ignored me. This is horrid customer service. Jennifer's dismissive and nasty behavior turned what should have been a simple, everyday order into an unpleasant experience. So I've been here before a few years back. I remember the cookies very well, so we came by this place. It's a nice little bakery place where you can buy cakes, donuts, cookies and bread fresh. They typically make everything and display them out for anyone to buy, but depending on the time you get there, it can look a bit empty. It's basically first come, first serve, but you can also order stuff from them too for parties and celebration. Just like I remembered, I loved their cookies. They put a good amount of frosting on it but not too sweet. They all look nicely decorated, and they usually do cool looking cookies based on holidays and seasons too. Their bread is awesome too, and donuts as well. They do discounts too on some of their goods if it's a day or 2 old but they still taste good. Ladies there were nice to us as well. Real deal here. This is a place locals Love. I remember the first time I had a Habys pastry. Sadly, it was at work, but it came at a perfect time because I was having one of those days. And then someone nearby said, "Hey. They have Habys in the breakroom." I said, "I hope they get a shot!" And they said, "what?! No. It's a German bakery. Have you had their donuts.?" Completely ignoring them after hearing the word donut, I sprinted to the break room to find an unassuming plain white box with no one around and 1 donut left. Mine! I took my first bite and it was an out of body experience. Greased sugar completed me. And my only regret was there was not another. I returned to my work cubicle swiftly and asked those around me with impassioned fervor, *"WHERE IS THIS HABYS YOU SPEAK OF?!" Quickly they said Castroville, which I repeated, incorrectly, and they corrected me, and I again mispronounced it because that towns name is stupid. Then I asked for directions and I was all set. I order a custom K-pop demon hunter cake for my son's birthday and the results were awful. I order this cake two weeks ago and the quality I got was complete shit. I sent three reference photos and they barely followed any. When I called for a refund and to discuss my concerns all they did was offer be a discount on my next cake which I won't be ordering from here ever again. I placed the three reference photos and the cake I got. It looks like my 3 year old made this. I spent money on a cake at this point I could have just made at home. This is ridiculous and unprofessional. I'm a single mom and I juggle a busy schedule I do not have time to go back and forth with someone who thinks this is acceptable work. If you were not able to do this type of cake it should have been communicated and I could have found a simpler design. Now I will have to attempt to fix this cake myself. I also drove 45 minutes for this cake just to be disappointed with a crap cake. The manager reached out to me stating the cake was an exact replica of what I asked for which is total crap. Cutest cookie alert! I barely even skimmed the rest of the bakery goods they had because I was so obsessed with how cute their cookies were. They were soft, chewy, melt in your mouth sugar cookies. I'm personally a person who hates icing because it tends to taste like chemicals to me but their icing was buttery & just a bunch of yummy goodness. The honey bun was the only thing that was still fully stocked, apparently it's not a best seller but I don't understand why not. If you like honey buns from the gas station you'll love these. It's soft with a very thin crispy sugar coating. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because the lemon bars we got were definitely not lemon bars or my taste buds are messed up because there was no lemon. Based on the reviews, the Apple fritters are scrumptious so that's what we got plus eclairs and cream puffs and a whole lot more. Our bill ended up at $40+ and that's with the military discount. They also sell day old bread/pastries for discounted prices. The bakery is clean and big and you can see them preparing or even slicing breads ready for sale. Service was quick and very pleasant. The cookie was okay, it was more like something you'd get at Walmart and didn't taste freshly baked, almost kinda chewy -it was peanut butter. The coffee cake was raw in the middle and in some places on the side, and the only flavor was coming from the pounds of cinnamon on top. My husband and daughter went in early yesterday morning. My daughter was so excited to go in and pick some donuts out for me. However, she was met by a mean old lady who treated her like she was a pest instead of a paying customer. My daughter is 9 years old, well behaved and just wanted to pick something out to be sweet to her mother. It is unfortunate that people like her are out there and it's unfortunate that my daughter had to deal with that at such a young age. Not only that, she was rude and ugly to one of the workers that came out and asked her a question. I don't know who she was, but hopefully she wasn't the boss. My husband looks white and my daughter looks Hispanic, not sure if race played a role in this, but when he came home, he sure took it like it did. Such a neighborhood gem! Not only are the staff and pastries / donuts incredible, you can't beat the prices and supporting local! I called earlier in the day looking for a small , festive mixed box of goodies to take to a party. The staff was super friendly and patient giving me ideas and running through the selections of the day. My bix was ready for pick up and I enjoyed driving into my small town of Castroville which gave me a neighborhood feel. The pastries were fresh and very reasonably priced. The large amount of employees (very friendly) tells you how busy this place is. Expect a fast moving line, while you browse your choices. The cookies, chocolate chip pecan, and oatmeal pecan, were extraordinary, the best we've had! We also picked up frosted cookies, which were great, very festive. Stopped by on a trip to a local state park. The outside of the building looks absolutely different from all the surrounding ones and is a quaint, homey place. We arrived after 3pm, so there were fewer pastries than I would imagine they normally have. An assortment of cakes, cookies, eclairs, and donuts were in the over 20 feet of glass displays. The store keepers were very friendly and offered to help us several times. Rows of sliced bread lined the back door, along with a station for coffee and beverages. We opted to try the eclair, jelly filled donut and cream cheese sweet pastry. The cakes looked good, but we weren't quite in the mood to finish an entire cake by ourselves. The eclairs were squared and there were two types --a chocolate and a pudding filling option. I've had sweeter ones, so these were definitely less sweet. I wouldn't put them on par with delicate eclairs from Paris, but they were definitely better than store bought ones.
