Honestly one of the best Mexican sweet breads I've had. It's self serve. I got a really good amount of bread and cookies (2 bags) for less than 20$. Hallelujah hallelujah I have found what my heart has been craving, the concha. So I yelped Mexican bakeries in San Antonio wanting the ones that opened up early in the morning and this place was among them. I read some of the reviews and they were spot on. We visited just as they opened at 7 AM and they already had customers. The attendant was very nice. They have a good variety of pan dulce, cookies, empanadas, and the normal finds that you would see at any Mexican bakery. We tried a variety of items and our most favorite was the concha and cookies that took me straight to my childhood at christmas. We also ordered a half a pound of Barbacoa which came with tortillas, pico, red and green sauce. Great place! read more

I read the two previous reviews before trying EL FOLKLOR and had to verify the reputation that was being established. I only felt qualified to add a review after 3 visits and trying a variety of items. Tamales (2 dozen didn't last 5 minutes with my friends at Starbucks) Fig loaf which I had never imagined, was a nice complement to Sunday morning chai. And the empanadas de queso which, more than one person thought they were good enough to have another round before I got one. I noticed some kolaches I am eager to try. This bakery is on Bandera across from Walmart tucked away in a shopping center. Their baked goods are fresh and high quality and you can do self serve with trays and tongs and they bag for you at counter. Many choices of empanadas and conch as as well as cookies and all your usual pan de huevo, pink cake, cupcakes, etc. Friendly staff and they will take pre paid orders for mini pan dulce and make them fresh. read more

I went to pick up my order after rushing over there due to traffic jam on bandera road got there right at 3:00. The employee came to the door and held up a sign saying closed I told her she locked the door early because it was 3:00 she looked at the clock and said 3:01. I tried to tell her that my order was already paid for but she wouldn't open the door and refused to get my order. I first visited this bakery 3yrs ago on Bandera Rd. I fell I love with all their variety choices of sweetbread But 2days ago I visited again I purchased several pieces of bread I don't know what happen with their sweet bread sorry but i I was so disappointed and disgusted with the sweetbread it tasted stale as if the bread was in their glass windows for days it some of the pieces that were suppose to be soft tasty and edible Wasn't don't know what happen maybe change of employees but I will not go there again plus the receipt was not even mine. My hat's off to Ms. Gabby. She has a great bakery. Great because of several reasons: 1. It's close to where I live. And as the other reviewer mentioned, there aren't too many on this side of town and for the ones that are, they aren't that much to write home about. That means YOU, HEB & Wal-Mart. 2. The bakery is kuh-leen! Very neat. A place for everything and everything in its place. 3. There are prices listed. I don't have to go back and forth with the "How much are these?" and "How much is this?" questions. 4. The prices are very fair. And there are a few galletas that have 'smaller' versions too. For example, I saw some polvorons that were pretty big for about a buck or so on one side of the bakery and on the opposite side, I saw their much smaller counterparts for about 25 cents each. 5. The variety was pretty good. Sugared, sprinkled, dusted, and chocolate galletas just to name a few. All thrown in with various empanadas, cakes, tortillas, and pan frances. They also have the day old breads on the top of the counter (by the register). A bag of goodies for a buck. 6. I also read their sign saying they sell barbacoa and tamales but I just can't remember when. I think the barbacoa only on the weekend? I came in late in the evening so neither was available when I went. I'll have to double check but I'm pretty excited to try both. 7. Serve yourself or they can help you but be careful because I dropped a cookie (it slid off the tray because of my clumsiness). Thankfully, Gabby was very nice about it. :D Again, I can't say it enough. Gabby is very sweet - much like the rest of the goodies they sell here. I can't wait to become a regular! read more

Man. I want to love this place. If anything used to love this place. I taken donuts to work and been commended of great they are. Then I would go back and the donuts were greasy and just burned. After awhile my co workers weren't even touching them. I continued to go since it was on my way of dropping off my kids however the donuts are a crap shoot. Sweetness! This place will cause all you sugar fiends out there to overdose in a heart beat. I swung by on a lazy Sunday afternoon recently and brought the whole family. Everyone of us walked into the small establishment which was void of showcase lighting, blaring loud mariachi music or any other stereotypes you may have in mind. The pan dulce and donuts were in the glass enclosed shelves looking delectable and calling our names. We cam for the donuts after reading an article that said the donuts here were suppose to be some of the best in town. Being that donuts are my kryptonite, my wife suggested we check this place out. We got a glazed oversized donut, a bow tie and a chocolate covered vanilla donut with cherry filling. Surprisingly, the glazed donut was superb. It had a spot on texture, think Shipleys but less of a tendency to squash down and flatten out. The flavor was great, their icing wasn't overly sweet and it had an after taste almost identical to a funnel cake. Yumm. The bow tie donut was also good in its own way with more of a crispy outer shell and once I bit into it, I could see it retained more of the hot oil during frying time. The pan dulce I tried was equally delicious but I'd pass on the Bavarian cream filled treat, it was a bit on the denser side and was definitely the weakest link. The service was friendly and they rang me up quick but they overcharged me $11 for something I didn't order and only noticed after I started looking at the receipt. Not sure if they did it on purpose or not but it definitely seemed fishy they she remembered at the same time I was about to figure it out...stay diligent my friends. Lastly, I ordered their quatro leches which is essentially their signature tres leches with the addition of cajeta or caramel. It was a standard size sheet cake which I got for my dad's birthday and everyone who had a piece agreed it was divine. Much better than the store bought stuff, the flavors were richer, the cake was moister and it just tasted homemade, not like the generic crap that you get when you're in a hurry. Super clean and authentic! El Folklor recently opened on Bandera, so we stopped in before work/school to give it a try. They have a good selection of Mexican pasteries, as well as tortillas and bollios. You grab your tray, load up what you want, then take everything to the register and they'll total it up and send you on your way. My daughter and I ordered a couple of conchas and a campechana, both of which were good. Prior to El Folklor opening, there hasn't been a Mexican bakery near us, so we've been buying our pasteries from HEB. After two bites my daughter got a suprised look on her face and exclaimed "This is way better than HEB!" I agree. Way better than HEB. read more

We stopped by to get some tamales and barbacoa. The corn tortillas at not home made but the it was still very good. I would recommend try thier barbacoa. It is not greasy and is full of meat without the fat. The tamales are more of a blond masa but they still have a good flavor because the meat is seasoned just right. read more

Recently moved in from Houston and tried this bakery. Place is clean with nice showcases, but found the pastry to be less than very good. While the items looked great, some were hard and not much taste. They seemed pricey compared to Houston's El Bolillo Bakery which has the best Mexican bakery I've ever had. It sells Mexican pastry at 40- 50 cents per piece vs Fokloro at 79 cents per piece. I'll keep searching. read more

Good buenuelos but the donuts were kinda dry and the tortillas were really thin and had this odd sweet taste to them.

Tamales were greasy. They fell out of corn husk so greasy. Too much masa not enough meat when I broke one in half. Threw them away. They only sell barbacoa by pound and lady at register said it was all meat in her broken english. But half was fat and gristle. Had to drain grease. The sweet bread was hard. read more

This was disappointing. My husband went and got all the pan dulces and they were all dry and not very good. We took a few bites and threw them out. The tamales were small, greasy and not very flavorful. They were saved by hot sauce. I wouldn't come back again. read more
